Safety Town is an interactive safety awareness program for children 5-7 years of age. Each day the children will be introduced to various safety issues in a fun and safe environment. The program is taught by certified teachers with hands-on topics led by community guest speakers as well as visits from the Lake Forest Police Department and Lake Forest Fire Department. Teen volunteers lead the children through camp every day and receive valuable training along with obtaining community service hours. Campers learn about pedestrian safety by tricycling about a miniature town complete with streets, sidewalks, buildings, stop signs and a working traffic signal. Importance is placed on having the children memorize a cell phone number to call if they should ever become lost. We use fun songs to reinforce all of these principles and the children memorize our very own Safety Town Pledge!
Safety Town will be held at Gorton Center from Tuesday, June 13th through Friday the 16th from 1 to 4 pm, rain or shine. On Friday, we will have graduation in our theater. A t-shirt will be provided on the first day of camp for campers to wear throughout the week. We ask that children bring their own helmets every day. We will provide the tricycles.
