Safety Town is an interactive safety awareness program for children 5-7 years of age. Each day the children will be introduced to various safety issues in a fun and safe environment. The program is taught by certified teachers with hands-on topics led by community guest speakers as well as visits from the Lake Forest Police Department and Lake Forest Fire Department. Teen volunteers lead the children through camp every day and receive valuable training along with obtaining community service hours. Campers learn about pedestrian safety by tricycling about a miniature town complete with streets, sidewalks, buildings, stop signs and a working traffic signal. Importance is placed on having the children memorize a cell phone number to call if they should ever become lost. We use fun songs to reinforce all of these principles and the children memorize our very own Safety Town Pledge!

Safety Town will be held at Gorton Center from Tuesday, June 11 through Friday, June 14 from 1 to 4 pm, rain or shine. On Friday, we will have a graduation in our theater. A t-shirt will be provided on the first day of camp for campers to wear throughout the week. We ask that children bring their helmets every day. We will provide the tricycles.

What do Children Learn at Safety Town? Safety Town students learn about a variety of situations and what they should do to remain safe, including:

  • Pedestrian, Railroad and Traffic Safety
  • Bicycle Safety
  • Water, Beach and Playground Safety
  • Fire Prevention
  • Personal Safety
  • Pet and Wildlife Safety
  • Stranger Safety

Our Partners:

Lake Forest Police Department: LFPD will teach the kids safety awareness and self defense in a fun/interactive way! They’ll creatively cover topics such as gun safety, bike and skateboard safety, what to do when you are home alone and cyber safety/online stranger danger.

Image result for Lake Forest Fire Department  Lake Forest Fire Department:  LFFD will teach kids about everything from fireworks safety to first aid, to even demonstrating a sprinkler system with a real-live fire in the safe confines of their smokehouse. This prompts a discussion about home fire prevention and escape plannning.

K9 Reading Buddies of the Northshore: K9 Reading Buddies of the Northshore will bring their therapy dogs on site and teach the campers all about pet safety! Topics covered will include what to do if a scary or unknown dog approaches and the do’s and don’ts around dogs.

Operation Lifesaver: Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit public safety education and awareness organization dedicated to reducing collisions, fatalities and injuries at highway-rail crossings and trespassing on or near railroad tracks. Operation Lifesaver will be providing our kids with rail safety education!

Foss Swim School Libertyville: Foss will be joining us to teach our kids about all things water safety!

There will be a graduation ceremony on the last day of the program. Certificates of Achievement will be given to all who go through the program. All family members are welcome!  Police and fire representatives will be on hand to answer any questions.
