If you’ve ever wanted to write a novel, short stories, or any kind of fictional narrative, but don’t know where to start, this class is for you! We will explore the principles of good writing, and focus on techniques that writers of fiction can apply to improve their work and make it compelling. The course will consist of a mix of lecture, group discussion, and in-class exercises. It can also be useful to anyone who wants to include a strong narrative element in their writing, such as those writing autobiographies or memoirs.
Scott Spires is the author of the novel Abandon All Hope (Auctus Publishers, 2021), short stories, book reviews, and articles on such diverse subjects as the Czech beer industry, the New Urbanist movement, minority languages in Russia, and many others. His work has appeared in the Chicago Reader, New York Press, Satire, and Terrain.org, among other publications. He is a member of the Society of Midland Authors, and recently completed his second novel.
