September 7, 2023Singing with Others Might be Even Better!
The Washington Post recently posted an article about a study about the benefits of singing. The benefits seem to increase when singing with a choir! The Sing with Us study adds to a growing body of research showing physical and mental health benefits from singing with others.
The article points out other studies have shown the benefit of singing on anxiety, memory, lung capacity, and even post-partum depression. This latest study, which set out to explore the psychosocial and psychobiological impact of singing in choirs, was a pilot involving 193 participants and revealed that a single choir session reduced stress and hormones and increased levels of immune proteins in people affected by cancer. They are currently recruiting participants for a 2-year study examining the effects of singing over several months.
In 2019, according to Chorus America, 54 million Americans sang in choirs. This group has been found to be more likely to vote, felt less lonely and more optimistic, had stronger relationships with others and were more likely to give to their communities than those not in a choir.
The article also reinforces that if you can breathe and make a sound, you can sing and receive positive benefits from the activity. It also pointed to research that showed singing lullabies are not only good for the baby or child, but also calming for the singer.
Looking for a way to sing in a choir, even if only for one night? Join us at Gorton for the award-winning CHOIR CHOIR CHOIR on September 23rd in the John & Nancy Hughes Theater! Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman (AKA “DaBu”) started Choir! Choir! Choir! as a weekly drop-in singing event in February 2011. Equal parts singing, comedy, and community-building, the night unfolds like a dream: you get a lyric sheet at the door, DaBu teach you the vocal arrangement, and a video is recorded. Everyone has a ball and goes home feeling great!
