Gorton Center – John & Nancy Hughes TheaterJoin us at Gorton Center for a moving and powerful film experience with The Theory of Everything, a biographical drama that chronicles the extraordinary life of one of the greatest scientific minds of our time—Stephen Hawking. This critically acclaimed film offers an intimate look at Hawking’s early years as a brilliant student at Cambridge University, where his groundbreaking work in theoretical physics began to take shape.
At just 21, Hawking was diagnosed with a rare form of motor neuron disease (ALS) and given a short time to live. Instead of surrendering to the diagnosis, he embraced life with tenacity, humor, and resilience. The film follows his remarkable journey as he defies expectations, expands the boundaries of scientific understanding, and becomes a symbol of human potential.
The Theory of Everything is not only a story of scientific achievement, but also a deeply personal tale of love, loss, and unwavering support. It beautifully explores the relationship between Stephen and his first wife, Jane, whose strength, loyalty, and sacrifice were central to his life and success. Their evolving partnership is portrayed with emotional depth and honesty, revealing the challenges of caregiving and the complexities of long-term commitment.
Directed by James Marsh and starring Eddie Redmayne in his Academy Award-winning performance as Stephen Hawking, alongside Felicity Jones as Jane Hawking, the film is praised for its emotional authenticity and stunning performances.
