Evening Porter (Facilities & Event Support)

Gorton Center | Lake Forest, IL

Full-time | Wednesday–Sunday

Help Us Set the Stage

Every evening at Gorton Center, something new is happening—a performance in the theater, a class in the studios, a private event, or a community meeting. We’re looking for a dependable, hands-on Evening Porter to help keep our building clean, safe, welcoming, and ready for whatever is next.

For 50 years, Gorton Center has brought the North Shore community together through the arts, enrichment, education, and events. Our Evening Porter plays an important role in making that happen. You’ll often be one of the first people guests, renters, tenants, and community members encounter when they walk through our doors, and your work helps ensure that every event and activity can happen smoothly.

What You’ll Do

  • Keep our public and shared spaces clean and tidy, including restrooms, the theater, lobbies, hallways and meeting rooms.
  • Set up and tear down rooms for events, classes and rentals. This means arranging furniture, staging and equipment to plan, then resetting each space afterward.
  • Support A/V for events and rentals in our meeting spaces.
  • Walk the building with our daytime porter at the start of each shift to make sure rooms are clean, unlocked and ready.
  • Review daily room schedules, floor plans and staff notes, and flag anything that doesn’t line up.
  • Handle basic repairs and adjustments, restock supplies, and report maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Set up and take down signage, stanchions and wayfinding.
  • Pitch in on seasonal and exterior work, including snow removal.
  • Adjust on the fly when a layout changes or an event needs an extra hand.

What We’re Looking For

  • A high school diploma or equivalent experience
  • Experience in custodial, facilities, building management, hospitality or event support.
  • Working familiarity with building systems (HVAC, electrical, A/V, IT) and with basic A/V is a plus
  • A friendly, professional presence with guests, renters and staff
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently
  • Good judgment, solid problem-solving skills and a reliable work ethic
  • Clear written and spoken communication in English

Schedule

This role runs Wednesday through Sunday. Hours can vary based on events, but 3 PM to 11 PM is standard. Some flexibility is needed around event schedules and staffing needs.

Physical Requirements

This is an active, on-your-feet role. It involves regular lifting, carrying, pushing, bending, kneeling, climbing and walking. You’ll regularly handle loads of 20–55 pounds and occasionally 55–100 pounds, with help from co-workers. Reasonable accommodations are available in accordance with applicable law.

Pay & Benefits

  • From $22 per hour or salary commensurate with experience
  • Health insurance subsidized by Gorton
  • 401k program
  • Discounted fees for Gorton events and programs
