SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Jo Ann Daugherty Jazz Trio
DESCRIPTION:Jo Ann Daugherty Jazz Trio\nThe holidays deserve a little swing. \nThis December\, Rendezvous Arts welcomes Jo Ann Daugherty and her trio for an evening of jazz that feels like exactly what we need at this time of year: warm\, joyful\, sophisticated\, and just a little bit glamorous. \nJo Ann is one of those musicians who seems completely at home wherever there’s a piano. She has performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival\, New York’s Dizzy’s Club and Smoke\, the Havana Jazz Festival\, and Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai. She has appeared at the Kennedy Center\, performed for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert with SIX The Musical\, and conducted major touring productions including Jersey Boys\, Motown: The Musical\, and SIX. \nBut for Rendezvous\, we get Jo Ann where we love her best: at the piano\, leading an intimate jazz trio with Joshua Ramos on bass and Ryan Bennett on drums. \nExpect an evening filled with beautiful melodies\, irresistible grooves\, plenty of personality\, and a few seasonal surprises along the way. This is holiday music without the fuss\, played by three extraordinary musicians who know how to make a room come alive. \nCome settle in\, raise a glass\, and let Jo Ann and the trio put a little more joy into your December. \nGood friends. Great jazz. Holiday spirit. We’ll take all three. \nWe are especially grateful to the Saints Foundation for their generous donation of a Steinway grand piano for our Chicago performance. Their support lets Jo Ann and the trio bring this program to life on an extraordinary instrument\, and we couldn’t be more excited to share that experience with our audience.  \n Featured Visual Artist: Deborah Maris Lader\nOur featured visual artist for this program is Deborah Maris Lader\, a Chicago artist\, musician\, and creative force whose work is rooted in craft\, curiosity\, and the possibilities of making something by hand. \nDeborah is the founder and longtime director of the Chicago Printmakers Collaborative\, which she established in 1989 and has grown into an important home for generations of artists. Her own award-winning work has been exhibited internationally and is held in permanent collections including the Art Institute of Chicago\, Chicago History Museum\, and New York Public Library. \nPrintmaking may be at the heart of Deborah’s practice\, but it is only the beginning. Her work moves freely through drawing\, photography\, mixed media\, sculpture\, handmade automata\, puppetry\, pressed flowers\, and other unexpected materials. \nIn her current work\, Deborah explores memory\, fragility\, grief\, and connection\, often through images of hands\, migrating birds\, tangled roots\, and objects that move and cast shifting shadows. Some pieces even invite the viewer to become part of the experience by turning a crank or setting something into motion. \nThere is something wonderfully fitting about encountering Deborah’s work during a program centered on jazz and the holidays. Both invite us to slow down\, notice the details\, and find something new in moments\, memories\, and traditions we thought we already knew.

SUMMARY:Tai Chi
DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi with Ken Ning\nSign up for Gorton’s Tai Chi class and join Ken Ning each Saturday to learn and practice Tai Chi. Ken’s Tai Chi class is open to both beginners and experienced practitioners. \nTai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, Tai Chi is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits of Tai Chi below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s Tai Chi class. \nHealth Benefits of Tai Chi \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found Tai Chi is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s Tai Chi class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nTai Chi is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight. \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

SUMMARY:Kids' Art: Ornaments & Gift Tags
DESCRIPTION:Make this holiday season extra merry with a workshop filled with creativity\, laughter\, and hands-on fun! In this festive class\, kids ages 7–12 will dive into the joy of artmaking while creating their very own set of holiday treasures. Each child will design three handcrafted ornaments and a personalized gift tag. These projects are perfect for decorating a tree\, adding charm to holiday décor\, or gifting to someone special. Every piece will carry the warmth of their imagination and the pride of being made by hand. \nDuring the workshop\, children will explore a variety of artistic techniques. They’ll paint\, cut\, collage\, and experiment with mixed media. They’ll also see inspiring examples of ornament styles and design ideas. These samples are meant to spark creativity\, not limit it. With plenty of choices\, every child will have the freedom to put their own unique spin on each project. The result is artwork that feels personal\, meaningful\, and one-of-a-kind. \nThis is a guided experience\, but it is never rigid. Our instructor encourages play\, exploration\, and confidence-building. Kids are free to try new ideas\, combine different materials\, and express their individual style. Because all supplies are included\, families don’t need to bring anything except energy and holiday cheer. And best of all\, no prior art experience is necessary. Beginners are welcome\, and every participant will leave with projects they can feel proud of. \nMost importantly\, the workshop isn’t just about the final ornaments – it’s about the joyful process of creating. Kids will share in the spirit of the season\, make memories\, and build keepsakes that will last for years. This holiday class is more than an art activity. It’s a chance to celebrate together\, to embrace imagination\, and to make the holidays shine a little brighter. \nAges 7 – 12

SUMMARY:Drawing and Painting with Cheryl Steiger
DESCRIPTION:Discover Your Creative Potential\nCome develop your artistic skills and creativity in the way that works best for you! Whether you’re a beginner or experienced artist\, this class offers a flexible and supportive environment to grow. \nTailored Instruction Just for You\nLooking to learn a new technique or improve specific skills? These individualized art classes provide a personalized approach to learning. Cheryl Steiger customizes instruction to your medium\, skill level\, interests\, and learning style. You can choose to work from photos\, a still life\, or your imagination. Please bring your own supplies. \nDrawing and painting do more than build skill—they also support your well-being. Art is therapeutic\, relaxing\, and helps improve fine motor skills\, hand-eye coordination\, problem-solving\, and creative thinking. Moreover\, creative expression boosts mood and may even help slow cognitive decline\, according to some research. \nMeet Your Instructor: Cheryl Steiger\nCheryl Steiger is a Chicago area artist and teacher. Cheryl grew up in Riverwoods\, IL. She studied fine and commercial art at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. In 1979\, she became a freelance illustrator\, also working on commissioned pieces and producing audio-visual shows\, cartooning and fashion illustration. Cheryl has been teaching art for the past 30 years at many Chicago institutions\, including The Art Center of Highland Park\, The Evanston Art Center and Edgebrook Chicago Public School. She shows her fine art locally and around the world. In the summer of 2007\, Cheryl participated in Chicago’s ecologically-themed Public Art Project\, Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet. Her small globe was on exhibit at The United Nations\, NY and The Kennedy Center\, and was purchased by the “Clinton Initiative”. The large globe is still being exhibited internationally.  \n “Creating art is my passion. Bringing my internal vision to the canvas to be shared is my greatest pleasure.”

SUMMARY:Teen Draw & Paint with Joalida Smit
DESCRIPTION:THEME: WINTER WONDERLAND\nCome hang out in a space where creativity comes alive. Artist and educator Joalida Smit invites teens to join her ongoing art class at the Gorton Center. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, Joalida’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, Joalida gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Because of this\, every class feels fresh and exciting. \nAnd here’s the best part: the goal isn’t to finish identical projects. Instead\, the focus is on exploration\, creativity\, and storytelling. Students learn how to express themselves\, share their ideas\, and bring imagination to life. As a result\, they walk away with more than just artwork. They leave with stronger skills\, bigger confidence\, and a deeper connection to their creativity. \nFinally\, this class gives teens a safe\, supportive space to take risks\, try new things\, and grow as artists. Step by step\, they discover the joy of creating something that’s truly their own. \nSo\, why not join Joalida in the studio? It’s a place where individuality is celebrated\, creativity flows\, and every teen has a chance to shine. \nAll materials are provided\, so students can fully immerse themselves in the process without the need to bring supplies. Ages: 11 – 17 \nSkill Level: Intermediate to advanced – Prior art experience and a sincere interest in art are required. \nNote: This is an art development class\, not a recreational after-school club. Students are expected to take their art practice seriously and to respect the shared studio space. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Apasionado Duo
DESCRIPTION:Apasionado Duo\nJanuary in Chicago could use a little heat. \nRendezvous Arts audience favorites Emi Tanabe and Gabriel Datcu take the spotlight as Apasionado Duo. Together\, they pair violin and guitar in a vibrant musical conversation. Their music crosses styles\, cultures\, and continents with ease. \nEmi\, originally from Japan\, and Gabriel\, from Romania\, are familiar faces to Rendezvous audiences. You may know them from their performances at the Ravenswood ArtWalk. This season\, they finally get an evening all their own. \nAnd what an evening it will be. \nFeel the fire and romance of Argentinian tango and the freedom of jazz. Hear music from around the world\, plus a few surprises along the way. Emi and Gabriel can make violin and guitar sound tender one moment and electrifying the next. Every piece comes alive with personality. \nTheir chemistry draws you in from the first note. At times\, you might hear the intimacy of chamber music. Then the mood shifts to a late-night jazz set or a café somewhere far from Chicago. With Emi and Gabriel\, you never quite know where the music will take you next. \nSo come in from the cold. \nFeatured Visual Artist: Anne Leuck\nOur featured visual artist for this program is Anne Leuck\, a Chicago artist\, illustrator\, designer\, and educator whose work celebrates curiosity\, play\, and personal storytelling. \nFor more than 25 years\, Anne has worked across painting\, illustration\, and design. At the heart of her practice is a daily sketchbook journal she began in 2001\, combining words and images to capture ideas\, everyday moments\, and personal growth. \nHer work ranges from acrylic paintings and digital illustration to paintings on glass and playful projects like Sudoku Scribbles\, created inside finished sudoku books. \nLike Apasionado Duo\, Anne’s work is full of personality\, discovery\, and unexpected turns.

You can contribute lyrics\, melodies\, rhythms\, or ideas. Everyone can play a part in the creative process. \nPart 3: Perform & Record (February 10)\nBring the finished song to life with a group performance. Share it with other attendees\, parents\, or the group itself. We’ll also record the final song. Anyone who wants a copy can receive the audio file. \nCome ready to listen\, experiment\, share ideas\, and make something new with others. No one needs to arrive with a finished song. Just bring your creativity and a willingness to collaborate! \nAges 13+ \nMeet the Instructor\n \nMy music journey began at the beginning of the COVID pandemic in February 2020. I started learning nursery rhymes like Mary Had a Little Lamb\, scales\, chords\, and different techniques. This eventually led to exploring dynamic fingerpicking techniques within the next two years\, modeling artists like Elliott Smith and Hozier. I have since written many songs\, some of which have been released under my name Nigel Haye on all streaming platforms. I have been fortunate to start teaching classical guitar at a music shop in Mchenry for the past two years\, having a total of 10+ students throughout my time teaching/performing there.\nDuring the past three years\, I have also become competent in piano\, drums\, bass\, and singing. This helps being able to push/sway a potential song idea that comes up\, in multiple different ways. I graduated with a B.M. in Music Production from Elmhurst University in 2026. During my senior year\, I was fortunate to serve as president of the songwriting club\, SEMFA (Student Entertainment: Music & Fine Arts). During this time\, I created some new opportunities that the club had never seen before\, such as creating a tangible\, mixed audio recording of every song created\, club merchandise\, and establishing  an executive board to protect the club’s longevity for years to come. We hosted bi-weekly meetings that would have  anywhere from 10-30 students at every meeting to make/share       music together.

SUMMARY:Teen Draw & Paint with Joalida Smit
DESCRIPTION:THEME: THE THINGS WE LOVE – PETS OR PEOPLE\nCome hang out in a space where creativity comes alive.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Atlys String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:ATLYS String Quartet\nForget everything you think you know about a string quartet. \nThis Valentine’s Day weekend\, Rendezvous Arts welcomes ATLYS\, an all-female powerhouse quartet with an international following. They take four classical string instruments far beyond the expected. \nATLYS is classically trained\, but tradition doesn’t hold them back. They move from folk and pop to film music\, electronic dance music\, and original works. They even bring looping and other technology into the mix. Their music has earned more than 25 million streams worldwide. They’ve performed everywhere from intimate concert spaces to Red Rocks and the Gorge Amphitheatre. \nEvery piece on this program has a special connection to ATLYS. Each one was written or arranged for the quartet\, or created by the musicians themselves. Along the way\, they’ll share the stories behind the music and guide us from one sound world to the next. \nExpect virtuosity and personality. Expect familiar melodies in unexpected places. And expect four musicians who love making music together—and sharing it with everyone in the room. \nFour strings. A whole musical universe. One very good reason to make Rendezvous part of your Valentine’s weekend. \n  \nFeatured Visual Artist: Glenn Hansen\nOur featured visual artist for this program is Glenn Hansen\, a photographer and educator whose work is grounded in careful observation and the experience of place. \nGlenn’s career has spanned both film and digital photography\, from years working alongside renowned photographer David Plowden to more than three decades teaching photography at the College of DuPage. His own work moves between urban landscapes\, the edges of suburbia and rural America\, and the expansive high plains of the West. \nWhether working with a large-format camera or today’s digital tools\, Glenn approaches photography with the same idea at its center: “Let me show you this.” \nHis images invite us to stop\, look closely\, and experience a place through someone else’s eyes\, a fitting companion to ATLYS and their own invitation to hear familiar instruments in entirely new ways.
