SUMMARY:Sound Bath Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Sound bath meditation is a practice that involves immersing oneself in soothing and harmonic sounds to promote relaxation\, deep meditation\, and overall well-being. Practitioner Joi Hunt plays a variety of instruments to create a sonic environment that envelops participants – including crystal singing bowls\, Tibetan singing bowls\, gongs\, chimes\, and other sound-making tools. \nThe vibrations and frequencies produced by the instruments in a sound bath are believed to have a positive effect on the body and mind. It is thought that these vibrations can help to induce a state of deep relaxation\, release tension and stress\, balance energy\, and promote a sense of harmony and well-being. \nPlease wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat\, a small pillow\, and anything else you need for comfort while lying down\, like a blanket and bolster pillow. \nInstructor Joi Hunt: Joi Hunt is a Lake Forest resident\, a professional calligrapher\, and a Certified Sound Wellness Practitioner.  Joi plays quartz crystal singing bowls and Himalayan bowls in her melodic sound baths.

As for her own background: She’s raised her 2 sons to adulthood. She’s programmed computers\, managed business projects\, learned as much as she could about other stuff\, taught as much of it as she could get to interest other people\, and always—always—told the stories about any and all of it. Now\, as a retiree from the conventional workforce\, an empty nester\, a consumer of food\, opera\, theater\, museums\, the visual arts\, and miscellaneous other adventures\, and a perpetual storyteller\, she keeps looking for and finding the next challenge\, the next thing to learn\, do\, and teach\, and the next story. \n\n  \n\n  \n \nAfter teaching studio art and art history in high school and colleges\, Lisa Parr opened and still runs her business internationally restoring Historic Landmark antique carousels\, speaking and writing articles on them and her specialty of original paint. Additional application of her skills is for legal work\, court verifying and identifying carousel figures for insurance\, damage\, and theft for private collectors\, as well as appraisals for museums\, art dealers\, and auctions. In connection with carousel art\, Lisa pursues research in early Celtic design and mythology on site in the upper isles of Scotland. Many early Celtic and pre-Christian designs are reproduced on carousels and carousel animals. Her interest in ancient and contemporary mythology has led her to research mountain storytelling\, initiating more travel and recent storytelling\, herself. Lisa has been telling Highland Park\, Lake Forest\, and several venues in Chicago. For fun\, Lisa also restores antique wood toys and sports cars\, which she drives with vigor and nostalgia.

SUMMARY:Traditional African Hand Drumming with Helen Bond
DESCRIPTION:Hand drumming has a rich history in Guinea\, West Africa\, dating back to the 13th century. The drum was a central part of everyday life and was used for communication\, religious ceremonies\, and entertainment. \nHelen Bond will share the great joy of traditional hand drumming! Helen has been traveling to Guinea for the past 21 years to study their music and culture. In this class\, you will learn basic rhythms on dunun drums and the djembe accompaniment parts. You will also learn the origins of each rhythm\, receive expert instruction on all instruments in the traditional djembe orchestra and deepen your understanding of the place of music\, dance\, and song in West African life. \nHelen is able to work simultaneously with students of all levels – from beginner to professional. All levels are welcome! Drums will be provided should you not have one. No experience is needed. \n \nDunun drums\, also known as djun-djun drums or talking drums\, are a family of West African bass drums that are played with sticks. They are commonly used in the traditional music of the Malinke people of Mali\, Guinea\, and other parts of West Africa. Dunun drums consist of three to five cylindrical drums of different sizes\, each with a different pitch\, and are typically played in ensembles with other percussion instruments such as the djembe and the balafon. They are often used to provide the bassline in West African music and are known for their deep\, resonant sound. Dunun drums are an important part of the cultural heritage of West Africa and are widely used in both traditional and contemporary music. \nThe djembe\, a rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands\, is thought to have originated from the Mandinka people in Guinea. The djembe was traditionally played by men and was used to accompany traditional dances and songs. The drum was also used as a tool for communication\, with different rhythms representing different messages. \nToday\, Guinean hand drumming remains popular both within Guinea and around the world. Many musicians and enthusiasts travel to Guinea to study with master drummers and to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Guinean hand drumming.

SUMMARY:Peter Rabbit and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we bring childhood classics to life! \nFour favorite Beatrix Potter stories\, The Tale of Peter Rabbit- The Tailor of Gloucester\, The Tale of Jeremy Fisher\, and The Tale of Tom Kitten- come to life in this mesmerizing puppet show\, complete with Potter’s original text and live\, original music. Mandolin\, violin\, toy piano\, and banjo create the score and melodies behind each story.  The set is filled with dynamic props and puppetry\, opening a portal to a visual wonderworld. Levers are pulled and cranks are turned on magical suitcases to reveal images that surprise and delight. Three charming performers interweave classic narration and puppetry with gentle interactive moments\, recruiting you and your child to join the adventure and encouraging young watchers to think about these iconic characters’ big emotions. These are sweet tales we all remember- a sure classic the whole family can enjoy! \nWhat audiences are saying: \n“Simple yet magical… The stories exude childlike excitement through the work of three polished and enchanting actors… the two-dimension Potter puppets come to life with humor\, mystery and spirit.  The live music serves as a perfect underscore and often allows the ensemble to break into songs that heighten dramatic moments or transition actions within a story.  This energy\, coupled with a simple and breathtaking scenic design (which centers on magical boxes)\, allows for a sense of old-school magic rarely seen in this digital age.” – Headliner Chicago \n“Through the use of hand-cranks and props\, sound effects and song\, each of these well-known characters came to life and their stories kept us all — old and young alike — entranced until the end.” – Buzz Center Stage. \n  \n \nGorton Center’s performing arts shows for the 2024-2025 season are partially underwritten by The Grainger Foundation.
