SUMMARY:CPR\, AED and Optional First Aid Course
DESCRIPTION:* THIS IS A HYBRID COURSE!  1.5 or 4.5 HOURS ONLINE @ HOME AND 2.5 HOURS IN-PERSON!\nThis blended learning style Basic CPR and AED class with optional First Aid is a must have basic skill everyone should learn. This class will not satisfy a BLS requirement. You will learn how to perform life-saving skills such as rescue breathing\, CPR\, and managing an obstructed airway for all ages. Also\, learn how to use an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator). \nThis course is designed by the Health Safety Institute\, a worldwide leader in CPR\, AED and First Aid emergency care training programs. Students will receive a certification valid for two years\, upon successful completion of the course. Class materials include a digital reference book and digital certification card issued upon successful completion of the in-person skills class. \nONLINE\nThe on-line prerequisite class is self-paced. It is best to use a PC to complete. We will send you the link for the online portion once we reach our registration minimum. If you have not received your learning link by 1 week prior to class\, please contact instructor (Tanya 847-989-7056). CPR and AED only will take approximately 1.5  hour.  CPR\, AED\, and optional First Aid will take up to 4.5 hours. The instructor will send you an email with the class options. A learning link can not be assigned until you choose your option. \nIN-PERSON (At Gorton Center)  \nIn-Person skills class is the same for both options and will take approximately 2.5 hours. Wear comfortable clothing. Most of the practice will take place on the floor. A kneeling pad is provided but students may also want to bring a yoga mat or towel to lie on floor. Please inform instructor prior to class if accommodations are needed to explore options. As Dr. Bessel van der Kolk reminds us\, “the body keeps the score.” In other words\, our bodies remember what our minds try to forget. Therefore\, true healing must include both body and mind working together. \nIn this extended yoga class\, you’ll gently slow down and reconnect with yourself. First\, you’ll be guided through a mindful\, slow flow designed to help you move with intention. Then\, as you settle into each long hold\, you’ll begin to release tension and make space for calm. Gradually\, you’ll notice how the body softens\, the breath deepens\, and the nervous system begins to unwind. Step by step\, you’ll learn to listen to your body’s cues and respond with kindness. \nThe Magic of Breathwork\nFurthermore\, breathwork will play a central and powerful role. The instructor will guide students every step of the way. \nPlease dress comfortably and bring water. Open to ages 7–14. \nWhy learn to fence?\n\nFencing builds balance\, coordination\, and agility. These skills carry over into other sports and everyday life. \nYou don’t need to be a natural athlete to start. Our lessons ease you into the sport at your own pace. \nFencing sharpens your mind as much as your body. It encourages quick thinking\, creative problem-solving\, and smart strategy. \nPlus\, the sport teaches discipline\, respect\, responsibility\, and sportsmanship – values that go far beyond the fencing strip. \nHistory of Fencing\nDid you know the archaeological evidence of fencing dates back to 1190 B.C.E.? The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility.\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. They have been serving the Chicagoland community for over 10 years. Their experience comes from National\, NCAA\, and Olympic champions. Their programs range from introductory levels to advanced competitive aspirations. In recent years\, Lisa has added storytelling to her list of creative pursuits\, performing in Lake Forest\, Highland Park\, and beyond. For fun\, she restores antique toys and vintage sports cars—and yes\, she drives them\, too. \nSuzie Garfield: Suzie believes that everyone has stories worth telling—many of them. Her own path has included raising two sons\, working in tech and education\, and diving deeply into lifelong learning. To register for this camp\, your child must be between the ages of 5 and 7 at the time of camp\, with no exceptions.\nNo repeat campers. Gorton Center will review 2025 graduation list and if your camper has attended Majors camp\, you will be contacted and your child withdrawn. Sign up for Safety Town Commanders here!\n\nWhat A Camp Day Looks Like\nEach day\, campers explore essential safety skills through hands-on activities led by certified teachers\, community guest speakers\, and visits from the Lake Forest Police and Fire Departments. With guidance from trained teen volunteers\, kids practice pedestrian safety by riding tricycles through a miniature town complete with streets\, sidewalks\, stop signs\, and a working traffic signal. Campers also build confidence by memorizing an important phone number\, singing fun safety songs\, and learning the Safety Town Pledge. \nSafety Town Majors takes place at Gorton Center Tuesday\, June 9 through Friday\, June 12 from 1–4 pm\, rain or shine. The week wraps up with a graduation celebration in our theater on Friday. Campers receive a Safety Town t-shirt on the first day and should bring a helmet each day—tricycles are provided. \nWhat do Children Learn at Safety Town?\nSafety Town students learn about a variety of situations and what they should do to remain safe\, including: \n\nPedestrian\, Railroad and Traffic Safety\nBicycle Safety\nWater\, Beach and Playground Safety\nFire Prevention\nPersonal Safety\nPet and Wildlife Safety\nStranger Safety\n\nInterested in being a counselor?  Register here!\nThere will be a graduation ceremony on the last day of the program. SUMMARY:Art Impact: Healing Mandala Rocks
DESCRIPTION:Most people experience stress\, difficulty focusing\, or anxiety at one time or another. Healing Mandalas are an excellent way to take care of ourselves. Creating a Mandala can help silence our inner critic and induce a calm and meditative state to aid in reducing anxiety\, stress\, and depression. \nAll supplies provided.  Ages 11+ \n \nThis class is free\, but spaces are limited and participants must pre-register.  \nCelebrating their tenth anniversary\, Art Impact Project is a local 501c(3) with a mission of enhancing emotional wellness through creative expression.  They partner with organizations such as schools\, treatment facilities\, libraries\, and other community spaces throughout Lake County\, to facilitate art programming with a focus on better mental health.  Providing a supportive\, small group setting\, Art Impact Project guides participant step-by-step through the creative process so everyone can experience the benefits of art. \nWant to take this class but can’t make this date?
