SUMMARY:Fencing
DESCRIPTION:En Garde! Prét? Allez! Sign your child up for a fencing class at Gorton. \nThis fencing course is designed for beginners or those who would like to work on basic fencing skills. The class will cover basic fencing rules\, fencing etiquette\, footwork and attack and defense moves. The instructor will lead students in a warm-up\, footwork exercises\, group lessons and bouting. Students are encouraged to dress comfortably and bring water. For ages 7 – 14 \nWhy learn to fence?\nFencing is a great activity to build balance\, physical coordination and agility\, skills that transfer to other sports and daily life. Although fencing can be a physically demanding sport\, you do not need to be a natural athlete to learn to fence. Our fencing class is designed to ease you into the sport and help you connect with your own body. \nThe sport of fencing exercises your mental as well as physical reflexes. Quick thinking\, strategy and creativity are all skills fencing can help enhance. In fact\, fencing’s combined physical activity with mental stimulation can help improve cognitive function and critical thinking skills. Fencing’s code of conduct also helps to teach the importance of discipline\, respect\, responsibility and good sportsmanship. \nHistory of Fencing\nDid you know the archaeological evidence of fencing dates back to 1190 B.C.E.? The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility. \nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. They have been serving the Chicagoland community for over 10 years. Their experience comes from National\, NCAA\, and Olympic champions. Their programs range from introductory levels to advanced competitive aspirations. Midwest Fencing Club welcomes all ages to learn fencing\, enjoy it as a hobby\, or turn it into their professional sport.

Secure your tickets now for an enchanting afternoon of theatre that will leave everyone with a sense of wonder and warmth. \nAbout the Author \nFew writers have been as attuned to the concerns and emotions of childhood as Margaret Wise Brown (1910–1952).  Brown\, a former teacher\, believed that very young children could be fascinated by the simple pleasures of the world around them.  Few had previously attempted to write specifically for children aged two to five\, and Brown created some of the most enduring and beloved children’s books of all time as well as developed the concept of the first durable board book. \nAbout the Illustrator\nClement Hurd (1908–1988) graduated from Yale University and studied painting in Paris in the 1930s with Fernand Léger and others.  His engaging semi-abstract style became world-famous with the publication of The Runaway Bunny in 1942 and Goodnight Moon in 1947 – collaborations with Brown that became two of the 20th Century’s best-known children’s books. \n \n  \n \nGorton Center’s performing arts shows for the 2024-2025 season are partially underwritten by The Grainger Foundation.

SUMMARY:Henhouse Prowlers
DESCRIPTION:Founded two decades ago with the simple desire to play original and powerful bluegrass\, this Chicago-bred quartet now finds themselves at the intersection of performance\, diplomacy\, and education. \nOnstage\, the group’s enthralling performances give audiences a sense of how much they love what they do. On record – including their latest offering\, 2023’s Lead and Iron\, released via Dark Shadow Recording – the band explores their collective life experiences through songwriting and intricate instrumentation. While bluegrass is the undeniable foundation of the Prowlers’ music\, the band bends and squeezes the traditional form into a keenly developed sound all their own. \nWorking with the U.S. State Department and under their own nonprofit\, Bluegrass Ambassadors\, the Prowlers have toured over 25 countries across the globe. The group’s experiences with people and musicians across Africa\, Asia\, Europe\, and the Middle East have shaped the band’s worldview and broadened the group’s direction towards bridging cultural gaps with music\, educational programs\, and workshops. Using traditional American music as a foundation\, connecting folk music\, customs\, and history the world over\, the Prowlers incorporate international elements into their already robust repertoire of unique traditional American music. \nWherever they are\, the Henhouse Prowlers find and spread the commonality we share as human beings through the universal language of music. \nYou can feel it at every show. \nMORE ABOUT BLUEGRASS AMBASSADORS.
