SUMMARY:New Media Summer Stories: High School
DESCRIPTION:Camp registration opens on Monday\, February 2 at 10 am\nNew Media Summer Stories Experience: A Filmmaking Program for Teens\nCalling all aspiring filmmakers\, storytellers\, and creatives! This one-of-a-kind summer program invites high school students to explore the exciting world of video storytelling through a hands-on\, collaborative experience. \nOver 1 week\, participants will move through every stage of pre-production. Working in teams\, they’ll brainstorm story ideas\, write scripts\, plan shoots\, and prepare production materials. With support from media professionals and local alumni of the High School Media Collective\, students will gain real-world insight into how stories are brought to life on screen. \nIn addition to technical training\, students will walk away with a completed film project for their portfolio\, stronger communication skills\, and the confidence that comes from creating something meaningful. The program fosters not just creativity but also collaboration\, resilience\, and problem-solving—skills essential to any creative career. \nOpen to high school students ages 14 to 18\, this experience is perfect for beginners and seasoned storytellers alike. Whether you’re curious about filmmaking or already passionate about media\, this is your chance to grow\, create\, and connect. \nShowcase will be on Monday\, June 29 at 7 pm in the John & Nancy Hughes Theater \nCheck out this video about camp! HERE\nAbout the Program\nNow in its 5th year\, New Media Summer Stories gives students the chance to collaborate with peers who love filmmaking. Together\, they produce a meaningful short film that follows the guidelines of the All American High School Film Festival’s Complete Experience. \nEach student takes on a role in Pre-Production\, Production\, or Post-Production\, depending on their interests and experience. The Pre-Production phase starts 10 weeks before filming. At that time\, organizers share the prompt and rules with all participants. \nStudents form a writing team\, and they select a producer and director based on experience and creative vision. They also organize departments for each stage of production:

SUMMARY:Approaches to End of Life Care and Grief Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Discussing Death\nDying Well sparks honest\, engaging conversations about death and dying. This seminar allows participants to examine how society talks about – and often avoids – the end of life. Other topics include gaps in our care systems and the definition and use of palliative and hospice care. \nYou will learn to navigate death as a unique\, personal process while acquiring tools to make meaningful end-of-life decisions. \nThis workshop welcomes anyone ready to face mortality with clarity and courage and includes those living with serious illness\, loved ones supporting someone at the end of life\, and anyone preparing their own care with intention. \nKey Questions We Will Explore\n\nHow can we navigate the death of a loved one with understanding and compassion? And how can we manage the emotions that follow?\nIn turn\, how might we envision and honor our own dying process?\nFurthermore\, what does a “good death” mean? How can we shape it to reflect our values?\nFinally\, how can we uphold what matters most – personally and culturally – as someone nears the end of life?\n\nThis is not a therapy session. Instead\, it is a candid\, interactive discussion. We will examine the physical and emotional processes of dying. By creating a space for open exploration\, participants will leave feeling empowered. They will approach end-of-life decisions with greater clarity\, confidence\, and compassion. \n \nLara N. Dotson-Renta\, PhD is a longtime writer\, educator and scholar of languages (Spanish and French). She is also a 500hr RYT yoga instructor with trauma informed yoga training through The Veteran’s Yoga Project and children’s yoga training from Full of Joy Yoga in CT. She is also a trained death doula through INELDA (The International End of Life Doula Association). SUMMARY:Take Your Painting to the Next Level
DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your painting to the next level?\nThis class is ideal for artists who already have some experience painting in Oil\, Acrylic\, Gouache\, or Pastel and are ready to grow their skills further. If you’ve been wanting to turn a photo into a painting or have started a piece but feel unsure about how to move forward\, this is the perfect opportunity to get expert guidance and renewed inspiration. \nEach student brings in either a reference photo or an unfinished painting to work on during class. From there\, artist and instructor Michael Latala provides hands-on\, individualized instruction to help you make confident artistic decisions. First\, he’ll show you how to evaluate your photo reference—guiding you in choosing what elements to include and what to leave out. Then\, through clear demonstrations\, he’ll help you resolve common issues like washed-out highlights or areas that have gone too dark to read. \nThroughout the class\, Michael gives each student personal attention. If you’d prefer to keep your canvas untouched\, he’s happy to demonstrate his suggestions digitally using Procreate on his iPad Pro. This digital approach allows you to visualize changes before applying them\, which can be especially helpful when exploring different color choices or compositional edits. \nImportantly\, this class is all about progress at your own pace. There’s no pressure to finish quickly. Instead\, you’re encouraged to slow down\, focus on what you’re learning\, and enjoy the process. With consistent support and practice\, you’ll discover how to turn your ideas into beautiful\, well-executed paintings—just the way you imagined them. \nThis series runs on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month: \n\nJune 11 & 25\nJuly 9 & 23\nAugust 13 & 27

SUMMARY:House of DOV
DESCRIPTION:Circle of Apathy: a firmament a fantasia\n“In the beginning there was nothing. Then there was everything.” \nIn Circle of Apathy\, the new dance project from House of DOV with live music from Family Junket\, the ensemble explores the cycles of growth and disintegration intrinsic to nature\, and works together to build physical structures which increase in precarity as the group strives toward expansion. “Through creative process\, we’ve sought to understand our own place within the greater ecology of our landscape\, and to experience the human body as a metaphor and microcosm of the natural world\,” says Drew Lewis\, creative director of House of DOV. \nFamily Junket’s five musicians blare dense soul with moments of ambience: voices wail\, altered by a vocal pedal; saxophone\, flute and violin harmonize over precomposed loops; djembe\, drum kit and percussion punctuate echoing acoustic piano. House of DOV’s seven dancers push against seemingly immovable forces\, find new hand and footholds\, and creep forward like a vine up a brick wall. A woman walks through an increasingly dense wood until the brush closes around her entirely. When all paths disappear from sight\, a figure steps blindly forward\, trusting that there will be a stepping stone beneath their foot.

SUMMARY:Design & Craft with Vee Gunn
DESCRIPTION:What if your child could design their own collection of creations this summer? \nAt Design & Craft\, kids step into the role of young designers. First\, they imagine. Then they experiment. Finally\, they create. Throughout the week\, campers explore creativity through a wide range of hands-on projects that turn ideas into something real. \nTo start\, we introduce a mix of materials and techniques. Kids work with fabric\, paint\, clay\, paper\, and collage. Next\, they learn how everyday materials can transform into something new. One day they might design a custom T-shirt. Another day they might create a board game\, shape a clay sculpture\, or build colorful room décor. Along the way\, they’ll craft key rings\, fridge magnets\, logos\, and other imaginative creations they can wear\, use\, gift\, or display at home. \nAs the session continues\, each project introduces a new creative skill. Campers experiment with color\, pattern\, texture\, and form. They test ideas. They revise designs. Most importantly\, they discover their own creative style. Instead of following a single template\, kids are encouraged to make choices and try something different. \nJust as important\, the process is playful and collaborative. Campers share ideas\, show off their work\, and celebrate each other’s creativity. As confidence grows\, so does curiosity. Soon\, kids begin thinking like real designers – asking questions\, solving problems\, and imagining what they can create next. \nBy the end of the session\, every camper leaves with a collection of original projects and a stronger sense of creative confidence. They’ll head home with handmade pieces they’re proud of – and the excitement of knowing they designed them themselves. \nDesign & Craft is perfect for curious\, imaginative kids who love to build\, design\, and make. This summer\, creativity takes the lead. \nAges 8 – 13

SUMMARY:Fencing
DESCRIPTION:En Garde! Prét? Allez! \nSign your child up for fencing lessons at Gorton! \nThis class is perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to sharpen their basic fencing skills. We’ll cover the rules of fencing\, proper etiquette\, footwork\, and both attack and defense techniques. \nEach session includes a warm-up\, footwork drills\, group instruction\, and bouting (practice matches). The instructor will guide students every step of the way. \nPlease dress comfortably and bring water. Open to ages 7–14. \nWhy learn to fence?\n\nFencing builds balance\, coordination\, and agility. These skills carry over into other sports and everyday life. \nYou don’t need to be a natural athlete to start. Our lessons ease you into the sport at your own pace. \nFencing sharpens your mind as much as your body. It encourages quick thinking\, creative problem-solving\, and smart strategy. \nPlus\, the sport teaches discipline\, respect\, responsibility\, and sportsmanship – values that go far beyond the fencing strip. \nHistory of Fencing\nDid you know the archaeological evidence of fencing dates back to 1190 B.C.E.? The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility.\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. They have been serving the Chicagoland community for over 10 years. Their experience comes from National\, NCAA\, and Olympic champions. Their programs range from introductory levels to advanced competitive aspirations. Midwest Fencing Club welcomes all ages to learn fencing\, enjoy it as a hobby\, or turn it into their professional sport.

SUMMARY:Do Not Submit-Lake Forest
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling Open Mic-WALK-INS WELCOME\n  \nDNS takes place the second Wednesday of every month. No Cover Charge!\n  \nDo Not Submit Lake Forest takes place in a cozy room at Gorton Center in Lake Forest. Each month\, it opens the door to a welcoming storytelling open mic. From the start\, the atmosphere is enthusiastic\, supportive\, and free from pressure\, judgment\, or scoring. \nBecause of that\, no experience is required. Instead\, everyone is encouraged to join in or simply listen. \nTo participate\, arrive at 7:15 pm to sign up. Then\, when your name is called\, you’ll have up to seven minutes to share. You can tell\, read\, tap dance\, or perform in any way you like. The story can be personal\, fictional\, essay-style\, or even about proper flossing. Throughout the evening\, all language and content are welcome\, with the exception of hate speech. \nFinally\, there’s no cover charge. Plus\, beer\, wine\, and nonalcoholic beverages will be available for purchase\, making it easy to relax and enjoy the night. \nHosted by Jasmin Rodriguez\, Suzie Garfield & Lisa Parr \nAbout Your Hosts:\n  \nJasmin Rodriguez is a trained actress with over a decade of experience spanning stage\, commercial\, film\, and storytelling work. Most recently\, she appeared in commercials for the Illinois Lottery and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Her film credits include several independent projects\, such as Market Value and Faithful Disappointments. She also served as a stand-in and double for the dynamic Miranda Mayo—known for her role as Stella Kidd on Chicago Fire—during Seasons 5 and 6\, where she gained extensive on-set training and professional production experience. Jasmin completed her acting training at Second City\, Vagabond\, Wheaton Drama\, and Gorton Drama Studio. Known for her dedication\, strong work ethic\, and commitment to continual growth\, she is always seeking opportunities to sharpen her craft. Currently\, Jasmin works as an MC for DO NOT SUBMIT – Lake Forest Open Mic\, where she shares heartfelt—and often quirky—stories that energize and engage audiences. Outside of her creative work\, she enjoys power walks by the lake\, bike riding\, active involvement with St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Evanston\, and traveling throughout Europe. \nLisa Parr: Lisa taught studio art and art history before launching an international business restoring historic landmark carousels. Her expertise in original paint and early design also serves legal and insurance clients in the art world. Fascinated by ancient myths and Celtic traditions\, she conducts on-site research in Scotland. In recent years\, Lisa has added storytelling to her list of creative pursuits\, performing in Lake Forest\, Highland Park\, and beyond. For fun\, she restores antique toys and vintage sports cars—and yes\, she drives them\, too. \nSuzie Garfield: Suzie believes that everyone has stories worth telling—many of them. Her own path has included raising two sons\, working in tech and education\, and diving deeply into lifelong learning. Now retired from traditional work\, she stays busy exploring opera\, theater\, museums\, and\, of course\, storytelling. Her passion for storytelling continues to drive her to seek new experiences and share them with others.
