SUMMARY:Turning Teen: Body Basics for Girls
DESCRIPTION:Turning Teen is here for #GirlMoms\, #GirlDads\, and any other trusted adult in a young person’s life. We know it can be hard to talk with a girl about puberty. Or sexual or mental health. And other issues relating to her body. After all\, many of our parents found it hard\, too. Some of us never learned how to discuss – without secrecy\, embarrassment\, or worse\, shame – what it means to turn into a teen. \nWe can fix that. Turning Teen has the support and guidance you need. Interactive classes and workshops\, offered in person or online\, provide age-appropriate\, medically accurate information in an engaging and fun setting. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn about female anatomy\, puberty\, body changes\, body safety\, and more! Turning Teen offers interactive pediatrician-developed educational workshops that are fun\, modern\, and medically accurate! \nFor girls 8+ (who haven’t started puberty yet or are in the early stages) and their parent/trusted adult. \nTurning Teen\, founded by Dr. Lisa Klein and Dr. Carrie Leff\, helps families talk openly about puberty\, bodies\, and sex. Our programs\, led by medical and mental health professionals\, provide accurate\, age-appropriate information to make these conversations more comfortable for kids and their caregivers.   \nDr. Jessica Reggi is Chicagoland’s Turning Teen board-certified pediatrician. She practiced clinical pediatrics throughout Chicago for about eight years before transitioning to nonprofit leadership. She is passionate about the intersection of health and education and has facilitated trainings about vaccines\, vaping\, and more for school districts\, community organizations\, and health champions across the country.

SUMMARY:THERE IS NO PLACE FOR US: WORKING AND HOMELESS IN AMERICA
DESCRIPTION:The working homeless. In a country where hard work and determination are supposed to lead to success\, there is something scandalous about this phrase. But skyrocketing rents\, low wages\, and a lack of tenant rights have produced a startling phenomenon: People with full-time jobs cannot keep a roof over their head\, especially in America’s booming cities\, where rapid growth is leading to catastrophic displacement. These families are being forced into homelessness not by a failing economy but a thriving one. \nIn a gripping and deeply reported book\, There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America\, Brian Goldstone\, Ph.D.\, plunges readers into the lives of five Atlanta families struggling to remain housed in a gentrifying\, increasingly unequal city. Maurice and Natalia make a fresh start in the country’s “Black Mecca” after being priced out of DC. Kara dreams of starting her own cleaning business while mopping floors at a public hospital. Britt scores a coveted housing voucher. Michelle is in school to become a social worker. Celeste toils at her warehouse job while undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer. Each of them aspires to provide a decent life for their children—and each of them\, one by one\, joins the ranks of the nation’s working homeless. \nThrough intimate\, novelistic portraits\, Goldstone reveals the human cost of this crisis\, following parents and their kids as they go to sleep in cars\, or in squalid extended-stay hotel rooms\, and head out to their jobs and schools the next morning. These are the nation’s hidden homeless\, omitted from official statistics\, and proof that overflowing shelters and street encampments are only the most visible manifestation of a far more pervasive problem. \nGoldstone is a journalist and author whose longform reporting and essays have appeared in The New York Times\, Harper’s Magazine\, and The New Republic\, among other publications. There Is No Place for Us was a finalist for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction\, named one of the 10 Best Books of 2025 by The New York Times and The Atlantic\, and selected as one of Barack Obama’s favorite books of the year. He has a Ph.D. in anthropology from Duke University and was a Mellon Research Fellow at Columbia University. In 2021\, he was a National Fellow at New America. \nBook Giveaway: FAN is giving away copies of There Is No Place for Us at the event\, while supplies last. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. It will be recorded but not live streamed and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Divorcing with Dignity
DESCRIPTION:Are you or someone you know contemplating a divorce?  This workshop will help you to understand the best options for you and your family. If a couple can communicate and be fair and reasonable\, divorce mediation is a path that allows a couple to make 100% of their own decisions about parenting\, financial and property divisions\, child support and alimony\, while allowing them to greatly minimize the negative impact of their divorce on their most valuable assets\, their children. \nMediation is also the least costly and quickest way to get through a divorce in a less stressful manner.  In this session\, you will learn about divorce mediation\, what it is\, how it works\, what it requires\, and why it is the healthiest and least expensive way to divorce. \nIf you cannot attend in person\, you can contact Michael Cohen through his website at michaelsmediation.com to meet 1:1 to review this same information in a confidential manner. \nMichael Cohen is a divorce mediator in Lake Forest who is dedicated to helping families get through the stressful process of a divorce in the healthiest way for the couple and for their children. During a successful career leading diverse teams for a large local company\, Michael trained at Northwestern University to gain his divorce mediation certification and has built a practice whose purpose is to help others.  Michael is a caring\, empathetic leader who will take the time to understand your passions and priorities and will guide you to help you create the best solutions for you and your families.

SUMMARY:AN OBJECTIVE LOOK AT MEDITATION METHODS AND ENLIGHTENMENT
DESCRIPTION:For this event\, clinical and research psychologist Elaine Aron\, Ph.D.\, author of the international bestseller The Highly Sensitive Person\, will discuss her new book Spirituality Through a Highly Sensitive Lens: An Objective Look at Meditation Methods and Enlightenment. In it she offers the first ever objective overview of meditation methods and paths to enlightenment. \nWhy spirituality through a “Highly Sensitive Lens”? This is not a book or a talk just for highly sensitive people (HSP)\, though Aron is one. She reflected on meditation and enlightenment for years and saw a huge need for objective\, complete information on all the many kinds of meditation and on all views of enlightenment. There were no books that fully described all forms of meditation and that provided the necessary information to make an informed choice. \nFurther\, most people do not realize that every form of meditation began with the purpose that you\, the meditator\, would reach nirvana. God Realization. Enlightenment. Awakening. Yet meditation teachers often do not talk much about it. They are apprehensive that students will see view it as unattainable or will aim for it and be disappointed. \nAron wants meditation and enlightenment discussed together\, as they were meant to be. She maintains that a spiritual supernova exploded in the Sixties\, but like a distant supernova\, its light has only now reached us. Many people began meditating back then\, and while many stopped\, some continued for fifty or more years. Suddenly more people\, both meditators and others\, are “waking up” to a state of profound inner peace\, unshakeable calm\, and clearer focus. There are hundreds of books and websites about this person’s enlightenment and that person’s method of getting there\, but no overview of this chaos or the actual research on it. \nBut what about all those unethical spiritual teachers you hear about? Aron is very interested in this issue\, explaining that one can “wake up” and still need to “clean up” your complexes. She addresses both in every chapter\, and how to avoid being a casualty\, whether due to tendencies in a teacher or in yourself. \nAron will be in conversation with Mary Commerford\, Ph.D.\, a clinical psychologist\, psychoanalyst\, and instructor at an analytic training institute in NYC. She was for 21 years the director of the counseling center at Barnard College. Before switching to clinical psychology\, trained in ministry at Yale University Divinity School\, working subsequently as a chaplain. She has been a member of a meditation community for over 40 years. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Christian Dillingham Jazz Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Christian Dillingham \nSome artists you simply have to bring back. Grammy-winning bassist Christian Dillingham is one of them. A Rendezvous Arts favorite for years\, Christian returns to close our sixth season with music from his acclaimed record Cascades alongside brand-new compositions currently in the works. His quartet features a powerhouse lineup: saxophonist Lenard Simpson\, guitarist Dave Miller\, and drummer Greg Artry. Together\, they create music that is both rooted and forward-looking\, rich with groove\, lyricism\, and discovery. \nJason Patrick Miller – Photographer\nOn the visual side\, Jason Patrick Miller transforms Chicago through the eye of a pinhole camera. His images\, printed on metal and altered through scratching\, rust\, and texture\, reimagine the city as something both raw and timeless. Miller’s work captures the weight of steel and structure\, while revealing the beauty of impermanence. The improvisatory spirit of his process mirrors the spontaneity of jazz\, making his art a striking companion to Dillingham’s sound. \n \nPhotography etched in metal. Jazz alive with invention. It is the perfect pairing and a powerful finale to Season Six.

Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s class. \nHealth Benefits \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found it is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nIt is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate.
