SUMMARY:Yoga for Grief & Stress Release
DESCRIPTION:Yoga for Grief & Stress Release\nGrief and stress don’t just live in the mind – they also take root in the body. They often show up as tight shoulders\, heavy fatigue\, headaches\, or even chronic pain. Over time\, these emotions can become trapped within us\, influencing how we move\, breathe\, and feel. As Dr. Bessel van der Kolk reminds us\, “the body keeps the score.” In other words\, our bodies remember what our minds try to forget. Therefore\, true healing must include both body and mind working together. \nIn this extended yoga class\, you’ll gently slow down and reconnect with yourself. First\, you’ll be guided through a mindful\, slow flow designed to help you move with intention. Then\, as you settle into each long hold\, you’ll begin to release tension and make space for calm. Gradually\, you’ll notice how the body softens\, the breath deepens\, and the nervous system begins to unwind. Step by step\, you’ll learn to listen to your body’s cues and respond with kindness. \nThe Magic of Breathwork\nFurthermore\, breathwork will play a central and powerful role. By focusing on steady\, conscious breathing\, you’ll discover how the rhythm of the breath can quiet the mind\, regulate the body’s stress response\, and restore a sense of safety. In addition\, restorative poses will invite deep rest – allowing your body to reset from the inside out. During these still moments\, you’ll find that your body naturally begins to let go of what no longer serves it. \nThis trauma-aware yoga class welcomes everyone. Whether you are a caregiver\, navigating grief\, recovering from trauma\, or simply seeking peace\, this class offers support and renewal. You don’t need any prior yoga experience – only a willingness to show up\, breathe\, and be present. \nAs the class unfolds\, you’ll gradually cultivate greater self-awareness and compassion for your body’s wisdom. By the end\, you’ll likely feel grounded\, lighter\, and more at ease. Ultimately\, you’ll discover that healing doesn’t always require words; instead\, it often begins with a single breath\, a gentle stretch\, and a safe place to move and rest. \nSo come as you are. Here\, you’ll find a space to release\, restore\, and reconnect – one mindful moment at a time. \n \nLara N. Dotson-Renta\, PhD is a longtime writer\, educator and scholar of languages (Spanish and French). She is also a 500hr RYT yoga instructor with trauma informed yoga training through The Veteran’s Yoga Project and children’s yoga training from Full of Joy Yoga in CT. She is also a trained death doula through INELDA (The International End of Life Doula Association). She is interested in helping others live life more fully and intentionally. \nShe resides in Lake Bluff with her family.

SUMMARY:Fencing
DESCRIPTION:En Garde! Prét? Allez! \nSign your child up for fencing lessons at Gorton! \nThis class is perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to sharpen their basic fencing skills. We’ll cover the rules of fencing\, proper etiquette\, footwork\, and both attack and defense techniques. \nEach session includes a warm-up\, footwork drills\, group instruction\, and bouting (practice matches). The instructor will guide students every step of the way. \nPlease dress comfortably and bring water. Open to ages 7–14. \nWhy learn to fence?\n\nFencing builds balance\, coordination\, and agility. These skills carry over into other sports and everyday life. \nYou don’t need to be a natural athlete to start. Our lessons ease you into the sport at your own pace. \nFencing sharpens your mind as much as your body. It encourages quick thinking\, creative problem-solving\, and smart strategy. \nPlus\, the sport teaches discipline\, respect\, responsibility\, and sportsmanship – values that go far beyond the fencing strip. \nHistory of Fencing\nDid you know the archaeological evidence of fencing dates back to 1190 B.C.E.? The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility.\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. They have been serving the Chicagoland community for over 10 years. Their experience comes from National\, NCAA\, and Olympic champions. Their programs range from introductory levels to advanced competitive aspirations. Midwest Fencing Club welcomes all ages to learn fencing\, enjoy it as a hobby\, or turn it into their professional sport.

SUMMARY:THE NEW PERIMENOPAUSE: AN EVIDENCE-BASED GUIDE TO SURVIVE THE ZONE OF CHAOS AND FEELING LIKE YOURSELF AGAIN
DESCRIPTION:For many women\, the years leading up to menopause arrive without warning and without a name. Anxiety\, fatigue\, joint pain\, brain fog\, disrupted sleep\, volatile moods\, and changes in sexual health can surface as early as a woman’s mid-thirties — well before menstrual irregularity signals that anything hormonal is underway. Too often\, those symptoms are dismissed by physicians or misattributed entirely. Mary Claire Haver\, MD\, has spent her career changing that. \nIn her new book The New Perimenopause: An Evidence-Based Guide to Surviving the Zone of Chaos and Feeling Like Yourself Again\, Dr. Haver\, a board-certified OB/GYN\, a certified culinary medicine specialist\, a certified menopause provider\, and the founder of The ‘Pause Wellness\, maps what she calls the hormonal “zone of chaos” — the years of endocrine fluctuation that precede menopause and generate an outsized toll on women’s daily lives. The symptoms are real\, they are physiological\, and they are manageable. Her book gives women the science\, the clinical tools\, and the language to insist on care that addresses what their bodies are doing. \nThe New Perimenopause delivers clear\, science-backed explanations of what’s happening in the body across every dimension of the perimenopausal transition — menstrual changes\, energy\, mood\, sleep\, and sexual health — alongside a frank account of why addressing these changes now constitutes preventive medicine for the decades ahead. Haver walks women through the latest research on progesterone therapy\, including both its benefits and side effects\, and equips them with practical tools: checklists\, questions to bring to the doctor’s office\, and strategies for navigating a medical system that has historically underserved women in midlife. Whether or not a woman has yet noticed any symptoms\, the book removes the mystery from this transition and restores the sense of agency that too many women lose during it. \nHaver\, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The New Menopause and The Galveston Diet\, will be in conversation with Heidi Stevens\, Director of External Affairs for the University of Chicago’s TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health. She writes a weekly nationally syndicated column\, “Balancing Act.” Stevens has been a FAN board member since 2021. \nBonus Book Giveaway: FAN is giving away copies of The New Perimenopause to attendees\, while supplies last. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. It will be recorded but not live streamed and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

Handpicked by Billy Joel\, Cavanaugh evokes a style rivaling the Piano Man himself. His interpretation of modern pop and rock classics has led to Billboard calling him “The New Voice of the American Rock and Roll Songbook” and Reuters recognizing him as Entertainer of the Year for the private events market. \nMichael began playing at age seven\, when his parents bought their first piano. Encouraged by family and friends\, Michael formed his first band at age 10 and began playing local functions\, fine-tuning the craft that would become his chosen career. His first full-time gig as a musician was an extended engagement at the renowned dueling piano bar Blazing Pianos in Orlando\, Florida. \nIn January 1999\, Michael received an offer that would unknowingly change his life\, moving to Las Vegas to perform at the famed New York-New York Hotel and Casino. It was there that Billy Joel spotted Michael and joined him on stage one fateful night in February 2001. Billy had found his new Piano Man. Michael closed up shop at New York-New York and moved to New York City to work alongside Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp to shape what became the hit musical Movin’ Out. He gave over 1\,000 performances in the lead role\, and received both Grammy and Tony award nominations.

SUMMARY:Palette & Pours: Inspired by Matisse
DESCRIPTION:Palette & Pours: Inspired by Matisse – A Wine & Paint Night for Adults\nGet ready for Palette & Pours – a lively\, adults-only night where art and wine flow together! This isn’t your average painting class. It’s a chance to laugh\, sip\, and let your creativity shine. \nThis session’s theme\, Inspired by Matisse\, sets the stage for bold colors and expressive brushwork.  \nBut this evening is about more than just technique. Art has a way of relaxing the mind and lifting the spirit. With each brushstroke\, you’ll let go of stress and slip into a creative flow. Whether you’re an experienced painter or picking up a brush for the very first time\, you’ll discover just how joyful and freeing painting can be. \nAnd don’t worry – you won’t be alone. Talented local artists Sandie Bacon and Lezlie Lenz will guide you step by step\, making sure you feel supported while still encouraging your personal style. You’ll learn\, laugh\, and create at your own pace. By the end of class\, you’ll have an original painting you’ll be proud to take home. \n \nOf course\, no Palette & Pours night would be complete without a glass in hand. All painting materials are included\, along with complimentary wine to enjoy while you work. Prefer something else? Bring your favorite beverage and sip as you create. \nSo grab a friend\, bring a date\, or come solo and make new connections. Either way\, you’ll leave with more than just a painting – you’ll walk away with memories\, laughter\, and maybe even a brand-new hobby. \n*All wine will be included. Guests are also welcome to bring their own if they would like!
