SUMMARY:UNTETHERED: CREATING CONNECTED FAMILIES\, SCHOOLS\, AND COMMUNITIES TO RAISE A RESILIENT GENERATION
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, children’s mental health challenges have reached epidemic levels—stress\, anxiety\, childhood depression\, and suicide are at unprecedented high rates. Amid high-stakes pressure for kids to succeed\, parents and teachers have never needed a road map to healthy child development more urgently. And as clinical psychologist and educator Doug Bolton\, Ph.D. explains in Untethered: Creating Connected Families\, Schools\, and Communities to Raise a Resilient Generation\, his eye-opening and powerful new book\, underlying our modern-day stresses is an even more pervasive problem: We’re relying on practices that are not in line with what science tells us about how to truly motivate children and help them thrive. \nAs Bolton persuasively argues\, we need to step away from parenting and teaching based on controlling our children with incentives and punishments—they focus on short-term compliance at the cost of health development. Instead\, creating healthy and strongly bonded communities for our children\, both in our own families and in our schools\, is key to their emotional well-being\, and their success in life. Untethered offers tools to help us create these communities so our kids develop healthy attachments and learn emotional regulation\, helping them feel more connected\, less anxious\, more included\, less shamed\, and more securely grounded. The power of communities is not only that they enhance our wellness—they buffer us from the impact of trauma and can be a guiding force in helping kids develop resilience. \nBolton will be in conversation with Lisa Damour\, Ph.D. (FAN ’19\, ’20\, ’21\, ’23)\, the author of three New York Times best sellers: Untangled\, Under Pressure\, and The Emotional Lives of Teenagers\, which have been translated into twenty-three languages. She co-hosts the Ask Lisa podcast\, works in collaboration with UNICEF\, and is recognized as a thought leader by the American Psychological Association. Damour authored the monthly Adolescence column for The New York Times\, is a regular contributor to CBS News\, and created Untangling 10to20\, a digital library of premium content to support teens and those who care for them. \nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY! FAN is giving away copies of Untethered to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:DEAR WRITER: PEP TALKS & PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR THE CREATIVE LIFE
DESCRIPTION:New York Times bestselling author and poet Maggie Smith (FAN ’20\, ’23) believes creativity is our birthright as human beings. Yes\, all of us—no matter our age or profession. Creativity improves our mental health\, our adaptability\, and our communication skills. In Smith’s new book\, Dear Writer: Pep Talks & Practical Advice for the Creative Life\, she offers\, “anything that applies to writing also applies to life. Problem-solving is a creative act. Conversations are creative. Parenting is creative. Falling in love\, leaving your job\, changing your mind—all creative acts. Creativity isn’t just about making art. Making your life is the ultimate creative act.” \nDrawing lessons from her twenty years of teaching experience and her bestselling\, craft-focused Substack newsletter\, For Dear Life\, Smith breaks down creativity into ten essential elements: attention\, wonder\, vision\, play\, surprise\, vulnerability\, restlessness\, tenacity\, connection\, and hope. Each element is explored through short\, inspiring essays\, followed by generative writing prompts that readers can use to kickstart their own creativity. For example\, the section on tenacity tackles how to turn off one’s inner critic\, take rejection in stride\, and stay inspired through creative blocks. Dear Writer provides tools that artists and readers of all experience levels can apply to their own creative practices and carry with them across genres and into all areas of life. \nSmith is the award-winning author of You Could Make This Place Beautiful\, Keep Moving\, Goldenrod\, Good Bones\, and other books. She has been widely published\, appearing in The New Yorker\, The Paris Review\, The Nation\, the New York Times\, the Atlantic\, The Best American Poetry\, and more. \nSmith will be in conversation with Glory Edim (FAN ’24)\, is an award-winning literary tastemaker\, entrepreneur\, and advocate for diverse voices in literature. Edim is the founder of Well-Read Black Girl\, an online platform and book club dedicated to celebrating the works of Black women authors and creating a supportive online community for readers\, and author of Gather Me: A Memoir in Praise of the Books That Saved Me. \nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY! FAN is giving away copies of Dear Writer to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. Hosted by Jasmin Rodriguez\, Suzie Garfield & Lisa Parr \nAbout Your Host: \n \nJasmin Rodriguez is a trained actress with over 10 years of stage\, commercial\, film\, storytelling experience. Most recently she completed commercial’s for BrightStar Care and Spirit Juice. She has worked  in several independent films\, such as “Faithful Disappointment’s”\, Market Value” and the TV true crime series “American Greed”. She completed her training at Second City\, Vagabond\, Sarantos Studios\, Wheaton Drama\, and Gorton Drama Studio. Jasmin is a dedicated actress and hard worker who is constantly looking to improve her skills. She is currently working as an MC for DO NOT SUBMIT – Lake Forest Open Mic and sharing wonderful stories with her guest. She enjoys powerwalking by the lake\, bike riding\, singing in her church choir & travels to Europe.  \n \nSuzie Garfield expects everyone to have stories (not just a story) to tell. As for her own background: She’s raised her 2 sons to adulthood. She’s programmed computers\, managed business projects\, learned as much as she could about other stuff\, taught as much of it as she could get to interest other people\, and always—always—told the stories about any and all of it. Now\, as a retiree from the conventional workforce\, an empty nester\, a consumer of food\, opera\, theater\, museums\, the visual arts\, and miscellaneous other adventures\, and a perpetual storyteller\, she keeps looking for and finding the next challenge\, the next thing to learn\, do\, and teach\, and the next story \n \nAfter teaching studio art and art history in high school and colleges\, Lisa Parr opened and still runs her business internationally restoring Historic Landmark antique carousels\, speaking and writing articles on them and her specialty of original paint. Additional application of her skills is for legal work\, court verifying and identifying carousel figures for insurance\, damage\, and theft for private collectors\, as well as appraisals for museums\, art dealers\, and auctions. In connection with carousel art\, Lisa pursues research in early Celtic design and mythology on site in the upper isles of Scotland. Many early Celtic and pre-Christian designs are reproduced on carousels and carousel animals. Her interest in ancient and contemporary mythology has led her to research mountain storytelling\, initiating more travel and recent storytelling\, herself. Lisa has been telling Highland Park\, Lake Forest\, and several venues in Chicago. For fun\, Lisa also restores antique wood toys and sports cars\, which she drives with vigor and nostalgia.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts Axiom Brass Quintet
DESCRIPTION:We are beyond excited to bring back the Axiom Brass Quintet\, who wowed us during our Season One events at the height of the pandemic. This time\, you have the chance to experience them live! Their program “Love\, Mystery and Despair”  is a passionate affair with the romance\, mystery\, and intrigue of Latin Music. Highlighting Piazzola’s mastery of tangos\, Cacilda Borges Borbosa’s luscious harmonies\, and a new bossa-nova-inspired composition from Lillian Lee\, Axiom explores the vast wealth of musical idioms from Latin origins. \n The quintet features Dorival Puccini and Christopher Scanlon on trumpets\, Alex Laskey on French horn\, Corey Sansolo on trombone\, and Serena Voltz on tuba. \nFriday night concert timeline / Concessions for sale\, including beer & wine \n7:00-8:15 PM concert (no intermission)\n8:15-8:45 PM conversation with artists \nAdding to the magic of the evening\, we are delighted to showcase artist Donna Castellanos. She received a degree in graphic design from The American Academy of Art in Chicago and worked in advertising for 5 years. Soon she realized she hated it—and put down the keyboard and picked up a paintbrush! Donna creates in a wide range of mediums but her true love is creating pieces from found objects that she rescues from estate sales and thrift shops. She incorporates these once-loved treasures into her paintings\, sculptures\, jewelry\, and clothing. Donna will also bring an interactive art project to the events—audience members will get the opportunity to create! Intrigued? We know we are!
