SUMMARY:Drawing with Ink\, Pencil & Charcoal with Joalida Smit
DESCRIPTION:In this class Joalida will teach your teen contemporary art-making using pencils\, charcoal and ink. Focusing on black and white helps developing artists to focus on the more technical aspects of drawing: light\, shading and composition.  Charcoal and ink is also a very expressive medium and great for teens to learn how to use expressive mark-making in their art. \nYounger teens with drawing skills may benefit from this art class as it will teach the fundamentals of drawing. \nThe Wednesday class focuses on painting on paper and canvas and drawing skills are assumed and not taught directly.  Ages 12 – 17 \nMaterials list \n\nWillow charcoal sticks\nset of charcoal pencils\nset of drawing pencils (2B\, 4B\, 6B)\nBlack India ink\nSketchbook with textured surface (larger than document size preferred)\n\nWhy take an art class?\n \nTeens can benefit from taking an art class for a variety of reasons. It supports cognitive and emotional development. In particular\, it facilitates executive functioning through planning and organising ideas and solving problems as they emerge during the process.  It is a stress-release and can be therapeutic\,providing a unique way for teens to communicate thoughts\, emotions\, and ideas that might be difficult to express through words alone. It builds self-esteem\, facilitates personal growth and social-emotional development as budding artists develop their skills in the presence of others. \nRegardless of their career aspirations\, engaging in artistic activities within a class environment can contribute to a teen’s overall personal development and well-being. \nPhoto credit of Joalida: James Gustin

SUMMARY:FAN: Tightwads and Spendthrifts: Navigating the Money Minefield in Real Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever asked yourself “What if I’m a tightwad and my significant other is a spendthrift?” or vice versa? Scott Rick\, Ph.D.\, a behavioral scientist and associate professor of marketing at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business\, knows that many people do. He also knows that the financial aspects of an intimate relationship can become a money minefield if couples try to navigate it without first discussing all of the financial issues between them\, especially if those two people have different approaches to spending. \nTightwads and Spendthrifts: Navigating the Money Minefield in Real Relationships is a science-based guide to understanding and transforming how we manage money\, both on our own and in relationships. Building on his original research\, and surveying a vast body of interdisciplinary work\, Tightwads and Spendthrifts will help you understand your own financial psychology and how it plays out in your relationships. Can tightwads and spendthrifts live together in harmony? Rick says “yes\,” but not without first asking hard questions about whose opinion should count most when making a financial decision. Once the issues have been aired\, he tells readers how to create a game plan for navigating financial decision making that both tightwads and spendthrifts can rely on for a happy life together. \nRick will be in conversation with Olga Khazan\, a staff writer for The Atlantic who is working on a book about personality change. Her first book\, Weird: The Power of Being an Outsider in an Insider World\, came out in 2020. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. \n \nBONUS AFTER-HOURS EVENT: Attendees who purchase a copy of Tightwads and Spendthrifts from FAN’s partner bookseller The Book Stall are invited to attend an AFTER-HOURS event hosted by Rick and Khazan that will start immediately after the webinar. Details on the webinar registration page.

SUMMARY:FAN: Strategies to Reduce Risk and Increase Resilience in LGBTQ+ Youth
DESCRIPTION:FAN has invited Melissa Blitz\, LCPC (she/her) and Joe Serio\, LCPS (he/his) of Compass Health Center to create a program addressing the complex issues that LGBTQ+ youth face. Our many school and mental health partners ask us for content that would be helpful to students\, parents\, educators\, and clinicians. \nIn this webinar\, Blitz and Serio will delve into specific risk factors affecting this demographic and offer insights into personal\, communal\, and societal hurdles. They will explore pathways to active allyship\, shedding light on opportunities for advocacy. Additionally\, they will emphasize the importance of increasing awareness of personal and societal biases\, addressing overt\, subconscious\, and implicit prejudices. \nAttendees will leave with practical strategies to empower and build resilience in LGBTQ+ youth\, spanning various crucial settings such as home\, intrapersonal relationships\, school\, work\, social environments\, and broader political and societal contexts. It is crucial to provide valuable insights into both existing and potential opportunities for advocacy efforts on behalf of LGBTQ+ youth. \nBlitz is the associate director of Compass’ Center of Excellence for Adult Mood & Anxiety programming\, and Serio is the Chief Clinical Quality Officer there. They will be in conversation with Tiffany Myers (she/her)\, a licensed clinical social worker and the social work department chair at New Trier High School in Winnetka\, IL. Myers has 30 years of experience working in mental health and has spent the last 27 years counseling and learning from her students in a high school setting. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. SUMMARY:Christian Dillingham Jazz Quartet
DESCRIPTION:A native of Brookfield\, Ohio\, Christian Dillingham played in rock and jazz bands throughout high school. He became serious about music as a career while at Youngstown State University\, studying under the instruction of Tony Leonardi and Micah Howard. After graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Performance with an Emphasis on Jazz\, Dillingham’s education continued at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh\, where he worked with Jeffrey Turner\, principal bass of the Pittsburgh Symphony\, and subsequently received a Master’s of Music degree in Music Performance. He also attended the National Repertory Orchestra Festival in Breckenridge\, Colorado and the School for Improvisational Music in New York. \n  \n  \nFriday night concert timeline / Concessions for sale\, including beer & wine \n7:00-8:15 PM concert (no intermission)\n8:15-8:45 PM conversation with artists \n \n  \n \n \nFIBER ART BY: Pat Kroth \nOriginally a Chicago native\, Verona Wisconsin artist\, Pat Kroth creates contemporary art quilts and fiber art installations. Her work features re-purposed materials\, saturated color\, and improvisation\, utilizing surface design\, collage with found objects and energetic machine stitching. \nPat creates contemporary fiber art with machine-stitched\, hand-dyed and commercial fiber fragments. She is fascinated with intense saturated color with a focus on cast-off\, and re-purposed materials. She creates entire surfaces of color using fiber\, and textural elements. Each work is then energetically machine-stitched. Pat is interested in the notion of how we assign value to things. Sometimes\, humble materials play a more important role than one would imagine. She has always been intrigued with non-traditional materials. Quilts and clothing act as functional and necessary items in society for warmth\, protection and comfort\, adding beauty and decorative components through skillful craftsmanship. Made playfully from recycled\, and cast-off materials\, her work often explores the notion of need. \nThis is part of the Rendezvous \nArts Series \n  \n  \n  \n
