SUMMARY:FAN: Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America
DESCRIPTION:During the impeachment crisis of 2019\, Heather Cox Richardson\, Ph.D.\, professor of history at Boston College\, launched a daily Facebook essay providing the historical background of the daily torrent of news. It soon turned into a popular Substack newsletter\, Letters from an American\, and its subscriber base ballooned to more than two million dedicated readers who rely on her plainspoken and informed take on the present and past in America. \n  \nIn Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America\, Prof. Richardson crafts a compelling and original narrative\, explaining how\, over the decades\, a small group of wealthy people have made war on American ideals. By weaponizing language and promoting false history they have led us into authoritarianism — creating a disaffected population and then promising to recreate an imagined past where those people could feel important again. She argues that taking our country back starts by remembering the elements of the nation’s true history that marginalized Americans have always upheld. Their dedication to the principles on which this nation was founded has enabled us to renew and expand our commitment to democracy in the past. \nProf. Richardson’s talent is to wrangle our giant\, meandering\, and confusing news feed into a coherent story that singles out what we should pay attention to\, what the precedents are\, and what possible paths lie ahead. In her trademark calm prose\, she is realistic and optimistic about the future of democracy. Her command of history allows her to pivot effortlessly from the Founders to the abolitionists to Reconstruction to Goldwater to Mitch McConnell\, highlighting the political legacies of the New Deal\, the lingering fears of socialism\, the death of the liberal consensus and birth of “movement conservatism.” \nProf. Richardson will be in conversation with Claire Bond Potter\, Ph.D.\, Professor of History Emeritus at The New School for Social Research in New York City\, and the author of the Political Junkie Substack and an associated podcast\, Why Now? She has written for the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, the Guardian\, the New Republic\, Yale Review\, and Dissent. Her most recent book is Political Junkies: From Talk Radio to Twitter\, How Alternative Media Hooked Us on Politics and Broke Our Democracy. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. \nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY! We are giving away copies of Democracy Awakening to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page.

SUMMARY:FAN: Women In Science Now: Stories and Strategies for Achieving Equity
DESCRIPTION:  \nWomen working in the sciences face obstacles at virtually every step along their career paths. From subtle slights to blatant biases\, deep systemic problems block women from advancing or push them out of science and technology entirely. Science writer Lisa M.P. Munoz’s new book\, Women in Science Now: Stories and Strategies for Achieving Equity\, examines solutions to this persistent gender gap\, offering new perspectives on how to make science more equitable and inclusive for all. The book shares stories and insights of women from a range of backgrounds working in various disciplines\, illustrating the journeys that brought them to the sciences\, the challenges they faced along the way\, and the important contributions they have made to their fields. Ms. Munoz combines these narratives with a wealth of data to illuminate the size and scope of the challenges women scientists face\, while highlighting research-based solutions to help overcome these obstacles. She presents groundbreaking studies in social psychology and organizational behavior that are informing novel approaches for combating historic and ongoing inequities. \nMs. Munoz is the founder and president of SciComm Services\, a science communications consulting firm. She develops\, leads\, and executes communication strategies for science groups\, including VC funds\, sci-tech startups\, scientific societies and academic research groups\, international organizations\, and other institutions. \nMs. Munoz will be in conversation with Vanessa Bohns\, Ph.D.\, a social psychologist\, professor\, and chair of organizational behavior at the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University (the ILR School)\, and author of the 2021 book You Have More Influence Than You Think: How We Underestimate Our Power of Persuasion\, and Why It Matters. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. SUMMARY:FAN: Ours Was the Shining Future: The Story of the American Dream
DESCRIPTION:Two decades into the twenty-first century\, the stagnation of living standards has become the defining trend of American life. Life expectancy has declined\, economic inequality has soared\, and\, after some progress\, the Black-white wage gap is once again as large as it was in the 1950s. How did this happen in the world’s most powerful country? And what happened to the “American dream”—the promise of a happier\, healthier\, more prosperous future—which was once such an inextricable part of our national identity? \nIn his first book\, Ours Was the Shining Future: The Story of the American Dream\, Pulitzer Prize–winning writer David Leonhardt draws on decades of writing about the economy for The New York Times\, examining the past century of American history\, from the Great Depression to today’s Great Stagnation\, in search of an answer. To make sense of the rise and subsequent fall of the American dream\, Leonhardt tells the story of the modern American economy as an ongoing battle between two competing forms of capitalism: one that envisions prosperity for most\, and one that serves the individual and favors the wealthy. In vivid prose\, Ours Was the Shining Future traces how democratic capitalism flourished to make the American dream possible\, until the latter decades of the twentieth century when\, bit by bit\, the dream was corrupted to serve only the privileged few. Ours Was the Shining Future is a sweeping narrative full of innovation and grit\, human drama and hope. Featuring the trailblazing figures who helped shape the American dream—Frances Perkins\, Paul Hoffman\, Cesar Chavez\, Robert Kennedy\, A. Philip Randolph\, Grace Hopper\, and more—this engaging history reveals the power of grassroots democratic movements from across the political spectrum. And though the American dream feels lost to us now\, Leonhardt shows how Americans—if they commit themselves to transforming the economy\, as they did in the past—have the power to revive the dream once more. \nLeonhardt is a senior writer at The New York Times\, where he writes its flagship newsletter\, “The Morning.” He has also been the newspaper’s Washington bureau chief\, an op-ed columnist\, a staff writer for The New York Times Magazine\, and the founding editor of “The Upshot.” \nLeonhardt will be in conversation with Matthew Desmond\, Ph.D. (FAN ’16\, ’23)\, the Maurice P. During Professor of Sociology\, and the founder and principal investigator of The Eviction Lab at Princeton University. He is the is the author of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize winner Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City and Poverty\, by America\, both New York Times bestsellers. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. \nBONUS AFTER-HOURS EVENT: Attendees who purchase a copy of Ours Was the Shining Future from FAN’s partner bookseller The Book Stall are invited to attend an AFTER-HOURS event hosted by Leonhardt that will start immediately after the webinar. SUMMARY:Tai Chi With Ken Ning
DESCRIPTION:Sign up for Gorton’s Tai Chi class and join Ken Ning each Saturday to learn and practice Tai Chi. Ken’s Tai Chi class is open to both beginners and experienced practitioners. \nTai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, Tai Chi is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits of Tai Chi below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s Tai Chi class. \nHealth Benefits of Tai Chi \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found Tai Chi is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s Tai Chi class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nTai Chi is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. SUMMARY:An Evening with Oshima Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Unbelievably accomplished songwriters\, singers and instrumentalists. – Richard Loren\, former manager of the Grateful Dead \nSean and Jamie are two of the most inspirational people I’ve met. They perform a roots-based pop sound that is infectious and fun\, and even though a little wistful\, this song gets in your head and won’t let go. – NPR and Chris Wienk\, WEXT \n \nMaine-based indie duo\, Oshima Brothers’ have been creating music together since childhood. The brothers blend songs from the heart with blood harmonies to produce a “roots-based pop sound that is infectious.” (NPR) \nOn stage\, Sean and Jamie offer lush vocals\, live looping\, foot percussion\, electric and acoustic guitars\, vintage keyboard and bass – often all at once. They want every show to feel like a deep breath\, a dance party and a sonic embrace. When not recording or touring they find time to film and produce their own music videos\, tie their own shoes and cook elaborate feasts. Maine Public Radio’s Sara Willis describes their songs as “beautiful\, those brother harmonies can’t be beat. They are uplifting and\, let’s face it\, we need uplifting these days.”
