DESCRIPTION:Calling all artists! This after school art class will not only provide an incredible outlet for self-expression but also help students to develop motor skills\, visual-spatial skills\, and problem-solving skills. Each week a different artist will be featured to inspire students to create their own unique piece of art. This class can get messy\, so please wear old clothing or bring an apron/smock. For grades K – 3rd \nCarole Pearlman’s lifelong fascination with creativity began as a child\, in a neighborhood art class\, where making art in the backyard was the only agenda for an entire summer. Many art classes later Carole completed a BFA in painting\, a MEd in Educational Therapy\, and an MA in Developmental Psychology. Integrating the disciplines of art\, education\, and psychology Carole developed The Joy of Creativity Art program. Carole works as a facilitator of creativity with students ages 4 to 84! Through her teaching\, research\, and daily practice\, she believes that being creative is an essential part of a balanced life. Carole is a professional artist and certified teacher.

The instructor will guide students every step of the way. \nPlease dress comfortably and bring water. Open to ages 7–14. \nWhy learn to fence?\n\nFencing builds balance\, coordination\, and agility. These skills carry over into other sports and everyday life. \nYou don’t need to be a natural athlete to start. Our lessons ease you into the sport at your own pace. \nFencing sharpens your mind as much as your body. The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility.\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. Originally from Oklahoma\, “Mr. V.” was general music teacher at Wescott School in Northbrook for 37 years. He has written hundreds of songs and dozens of original theater works that have been performed across Chicago’s northern suburbs. Recipient of the Golden Apple Award\, IEA Human Rights Award\, National-Louis Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Justice\, and Star of Teaching Award for the State of Illinois\, Vaananen continues to perform classes and presentations for children\, weaving his original music into inspiring lessons on Nature\, history\, culture\, and adventure. \n \nAbout Our Artistic Director: Jeremy Kruse\, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. Advanced students can prepare for local competitions. They can also audition for orchestra and band programs throughout the Chicagoland area. She holds a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory and completed graduate studies at Northwestern University with renowned flutist Walfrid Kujala. A prizewinner in numerous national competitions\, she was a semifinalist in the 2005 Jean-Pierre Rampal Flute Competition in Paris. Ms. Johnson is a dedicated educator who has served as a masterclass clinician and professor emeritus at Lone Star College Montgomery. She currently maintains a private flute studio in Lake Forest\, Illinois\, where she teaches students of all levels\, and serves as Executive Director of the Houston Youth Chamber Orchestra.

DESCRIPTION:Let your little artist dive into the colorful world of mosaics! In this hands-on workshop\, children will design and create their very own mosaic coaster from start to finish. \nFirst\, young artists will choose from a variety of bright\, kid-friendly mosaic tiles. Then\, they’ll arrange different colors and shapes to create a pattern they love. They can mix\, match\, experiment\, and let their imaginations lead the way. \nOur instructor will guide children through each step of the mosaic-making process. Kids will learn how to arrange tiles and bring their ideas to life. They’ll also discover the basics of mosaic art while working at a comfortable pace. \nAs they create\, children will build important skills. Picking up and placing small tiles strengthens fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Planning a design encourages problem-solving and concentration. Plus\, choosing colors\, shapes\, and patterns gives every child a chance to express their creativity. \nThere’s no right or wrong way to design a mosaic. Each child can make something completely unique. This supportive workshop encourages kids to try new ideas\, make creative choices\, and feel proud of what they create. \nAt the end of class\, every young artist will take home a colorful handmade coaster. He has written hundreds of songs and dozens of original theater works that have been performed across Chicago’s northern suburbs. Recipient of the Golden Apple Award\, IEA Human Rights Award\, National-Louis Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Justice\, and Star of Teaching Award for the State of Illinois\, Vaananen continues to perform classes and presentations for children\, weaving his original music into inspiring lessons on Nature\, history\, culture\, and adventure. \n \nAbout Our Artistic Director: Jeremy Kruse\, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. They will practice important sewing techniques and gain confidence with each project. \nOver the three days\, students will create a quilted bag and a matching pouch. They will also make cozy winter accessories\, such as a scarf or neck wrap\, along with a soft and stylish pillow. Each project gives students a chance to learn new skills and add their own creative touches. \nWe provide everything students need\, including fabric\, thread\, needles\, pins\, and sewing machines. Just bring your creativity and get ready to cut\, stitch\, and create!

They also help children connect with others and feel more comfortable in social settings. \nIn this class\, children ages 5 to 8 will learn the basics of everyday manners. The lessons are fun\, hands-on\, and easy to understand. Through gentle practice and simple routines\, kids will build skills they can use at home\, school\, or anywhere they go. \nGood manners start with respect – for yourself and for others. When children practice polite behavior\, they show they care. They learn to be thoughtful guests\, kind friends\, and helpful family members. \nThis class covers key habits that make mealtimes smoother and conversations easier. Step by step\, students will learn how to behave politely in group settings and around the table. \nTopics include:\n\nSetting the table for a two-course meal using real plates\, cutlery\, and glasses\nPracticing how to use silverware correctly\nTaking turns and being patient while others speak\nSitting tall with good posture and keeping elbows off the table\nListening carefully and making eye contact when someone is talking\nStarting and joining polite conversations during meals\n\nEach skill is taught in a way that’s age-appropriate and fun. Children will practice with their classmates and build habits they can use every day. \nBy the end of class\, your child will feel more confident and capable in social situations. They’ll understand why manners matter – and how to use them to show kindness and respect. \nGive your child a strong start with the lifelong gift of good etiquette. Step by step\, students will grow more comfortable and confident. \nFirst\, we’ll talk about manners at home. Then we’ll move on to social settings. From casual playdates to formal family dinners\, your child will learn what’s expected – and why it matters. \nTopics include: \n\nHow to set the table for a three-course meal\nEtiquette for both casual and formal events\nMaking eye contact and being a good listener\nStarting conversations and knowing what to say\nUsing phones and tablets politely in group settings\n\nAlong the way\, students will learn to think before they speak\, show kindness\, and handle themselves with care. These skills help them feel more prepared\, whether they’re meeting new people or spending time with family. \nMost importantly\, they’ll learn that good etiquette isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being thoughtful\, respectful\, and aware of others. \nBy the end of class\, your child will feel more at ease in many social situations. They’ll understand how etiquette helps them connect with others – and why it matters every day. \nHelp your child build strong habits that last a lifetime.
