SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Strings Attached
DESCRIPTION:Strings Attached\nRendezvous Arts kicks off Season 7 with an audience favorite. But this time\, we’re adding strings! \nOur beloved Woodwind Octet returns—and it’s bigger than ever. Eleven musicians take the stage\, bringing even more color\, warmth\, and energy. The program blends familiar favorites with something completely new. \nAnd we mean completely new. \nLocal composer Scott Stevenson is creating a piece just for this ensemble. Nice Fresh will receive its world premiere at these performances. Rendezvous audiences will be among the first to hear this brand-new work\, written specifically for the musicians onstage. \nNext\, the program takes a playful turn with Jonathan Dove’s Figures in the Garden. This lively serenade for wind octet draws inspiration from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. The program also gets up close and personal with intimate performances by horn trio and cello and bass duo. \nThen comes a piece we’ve dreamed of bringing to Rendezvous for years: Antonín Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds in D Minor\, Op. 44. It’s warm\, lyrical\, joyful\, and full of personality. And with our expanded ensemble\, it’s the perfect way to launch a new season. \nA world premiere. Eleven musicians. Mozart reimagined. Dvořák at his most irresistible. \nStrings attached? Absolutely. \nFeatured Visual Artist: Fred Draper\nAdding another dimension to the program is featured visual artist Fred Draper\, whose work invites us to look more closely at the world around us. \nA perceptual artist drawn to the landscape and natural world\, Fred works across pastel\, drypoint printmaking\, drawing\, and painting. His work is rooted in careful observation\, exploring how the same subject can reveal something entirely different through a change in medium\, material\, or point of view. \nFred holds a BFA with a concentration in painting from Wright State University\, and his work has been exhibited in galleries across the country. \nIt’s a perfect fit for a program all about hearing familiar sounds in new ways. \n

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Noiś Saxophone Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Noiś Saxophone Quartet\nThink you know what a saxophone quartet sounds like? Noiś is here to change your mind. \nMusical America calls Chicago’s Noiś Saxophone Quartet “the American saxophone quartet du jour.” Now the quartet celebrates its 10th season by doing what it does best: taking four saxophones places you never expected them to go. \nFor its Rendezvous Arts debut\, Noiś brings a bold and wide-ranging program. Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 5 and Paquito d’Rivera’s Wapango burst with rhythmic energy. An unexpected Schumann arrangement shows off a completely different side of the quartet. \nThen Noiś turns to the music of today. Works by Sarah Kirkland Snider\, Emma O’Halloran\, Augusta Read Thomas\, Shelley Washington\, and Travis Laplante each bring a distinct voice. Noiś moves effortlessly from intimate and atmospheric to playful\, explosive\, and exhilarating. \nOver the past decade\, Noiś has premiered more than 120 new works. Along the way\, the quartet has built a national reputation for redefining what four saxophones can do. \nNow we get to experience them up close. \nFour saxophones. Ten years together. One seriously unexpected hour of music. \nFeatured Visual Artist: Diana Leviton Gondek\nOur featured visual artist for this program is Diana Leviton Gondek\, a Chicago artist whose work begins with stories. \nDrawing from moments and experiences in her own life\, Diana creates paintings that invite each viewer to discover their own meaning within them. Her background in watercolor remains an important influence\, but her work has evolved to incorporate thin layers of oil and mixed media\, creating richly layered pieces that feel personal\, expressive\, and entirely individual. \nDiana studied Fine Arts before becoming an Art Director at Northwestern University and later returning to her own studio practice. Her work has been exhibited throughout Chicago\, across the United States\, and internationally\, and can be found in the permanent collection of the Chicago History Museum. \nShe has also created public and commissioned work for organizations including Special Olympics\, and her art has been featured in numerous exhibitions\, publications\, and television segments. \nLike the music of Noiś\, Diana’s work reminds us how much can happen when familiar forms are seen\, heard\, and experienced in a completely new way.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Jo Ann Daugherty Jazz Trio
DESCRIPTION:Jo Ann Daugherty Jazz Trio\nThe holidays deserve a little swing. \nThis December\, Rendezvous Arts welcomes Jo Ann Daugherty and her trio for an evening of jazz that feels like exactly what we need at this time of year: warm\, joyful\, sophisticated\, and just a little bit glamorous. \nJo Ann is one of those musicians who seems completely at home wherever there’s a piano. She has performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival\, New York’s Dizzy’s Club and Smoke\, the Havana Jazz Festival\, and Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai. She has appeared at the Kennedy Center\, performed for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert with SIX The Musical\, and conducted major touring productions including Jersey Boys\, Motown: The Musical\, and SIX. \nBut for Rendezvous\, we get Jo Ann where we love her best: at the piano\, leading an intimate jazz trio with Joshua Ramos on bass and Ryan Bennett on drums. \nExpect an evening filled with beautiful melodies\, irresistible grooves\, plenty of personality\, and a few seasonal surprises along the way. This is holiday music without the fuss\, played by three extraordinary musicians who know how to make a room come alive. \nCome settle in\, raise a glass\, and let Jo Ann and the trio put a little more joy into your December. \nGood friends. Great jazz. Holiday spirit. We’ll take all three. \nWe are especially grateful to the Saints Foundation for their generous donation of a Steinway grand piano for our Chicago performance. Their support lets Jo Ann and the trio bring this program to life on an extraordinary instrument\, and we couldn’t be more excited to share that experience with our audience.  \n Featured Visual Artist: Deborah Maris Lader\nOur featured visual artist for this program is Deborah Maris Lader\, a Chicago artist\, musician\, and creative force whose work is rooted in craft\, curiosity\, and the possibilities of making something by hand. \nDeborah is the founder and longtime director of the Chicago Printmakers Collaborative\, which she established in 1989 and has grown into an important home for generations of artists. Her own award-winning work has been exhibited internationally and is held in permanent collections including the Art Institute of Chicago\, Chicago History Museum\, and New York Public Library. \nPrintmaking may be at the heart of Deborah’s practice\, but it is only the beginning. Her work moves freely through drawing\, photography\, mixed media\, sculpture\, handmade automata\, puppetry\, pressed flowers\, and other unexpected materials. \nIn her current work\, Deborah explores memory\, fragility\, grief\, and connection\, often through images of hands\, migrating birds\, tangled roots\, and objects that move and cast shifting shadows. Some pieces even invite the viewer to become part of the experience by turning a crank or setting something into motion. \nThere is something wonderfully fitting about encountering Deborah’s work during a program centered on jazz and the holidays. Both invite us to slow down\, notice the details\, and find something new in moments\, memories\, and traditions we thought we already knew.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Apasionado Duo
DESCRIPTION:Apasionado Duo\nJanuary in Chicago could use a little heat. \nRendezvous Arts audience favorites Emi Tanabe and Gabriel Datcu take the spotlight as Apasionado Duo. Together\, they pair violin and guitar in a vibrant musical conversation. Their music crosses styles\, cultures\, and continents with ease. \nEmi\, originally from Japan\, and Gabriel\, from Romania\, are familiar faces to Rendezvous audiences. You may know them from their performances at the Ravenswood ArtWalk. This season\, they finally get an evening all their own. \nAnd what an evening it will be. \nFeel the fire and romance of Argentinian tango and the freedom of jazz. Hear music from around the world\, plus a few surprises along the way. Emi and Gabriel can make violin and guitar sound tender one moment and electrifying the next. Every piece comes alive with personality. \nTheir chemistry draws you in from the first note. At times\, you might hear the intimacy of chamber music. Then the mood shifts to a late-night jazz set or a café somewhere far from Chicago. With Emi and Gabriel\, you never quite know where the music will take you next. \nSo come in from the cold. \nFeatured Visual Artist: Anne Leuck\nOur featured visual artist for this program is Anne Leuck\, a Chicago artist\, illustrator\, designer\, and educator whose work celebrates curiosity\, play\, and personal storytelling. \nFor more than 25 years\, Anne has worked across painting\, illustration\, and design. At the heart of her practice is a daily sketchbook journal she began in 2001\, combining words and images to capture ideas\, everyday moments\, and personal growth. \nHer work ranges from acrylic paintings and digital illustration to paintings on glass and playful projects like Sudoku Scribbles\, created inside finished sudoku books. \nLike Apasionado Duo\, Anne’s work is full of personality\, discovery\, and unexpected turns.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Atlys String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:ATLYS String Quartet\nForget everything you think you know about a string quartet. \nThis Valentine’s Day weekend\, Rendezvous Arts welcomes ATLYS\, an all-female powerhouse quartet with an international following. They take four classical string instruments far beyond the expected. \nATLYS is classically trained\, but tradition doesn’t hold them back. They move from folk and pop to film music\, electronic dance music\, and original works. They even bring looping and other technology into the mix. Their music has earned more than 25 million streams worldwide. They’ve performed everywhere from intimate concert spaces to Red Rocks and the Gorge Amphitheatre. \nEvery piece on this program has a special connection to ATLYS. Each one was written or arranged for the quartet\, or created by the musicians themselves. Along the way\, they’ll share the stories behind the music and guide us from one sound world to the next. \nExpect virtuosity and personality. Expect familiar melodies in unexpected places. And expect four musicians who love making music together—and sharing it with everyone in the room. \nFour strings. A whole musical universe. One very good reason to make Rendezvous part of your Valentine’s weekend. \n  \nFeatured Visual Artist: Glenn Hansen\nOur featured visual artist for this program is Glenn Hansen\, a photographer and educator whose work is grounded in careful observation and the experience of place. \nGlenn’s career has spanned both film and digital photography\, from years working alongside renowned photographer David Plowden to more than three decades teaching photography at the College of DuPage. His own work moves between urban landscapes\, the edges of suburbia and rural America\, and the expansive high plains of the West. \nWhether working with a large-format camera or today’s digital tools\, Glenn approaches photography with the same idea at its center: “Let me show you this.” \nHis images invite us to stop\, look closely\, and experience a place through someone else’s eyes\, a fitting companion to ATLYS and their own invitation to hear familiar instruments in entirely new ways.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Haymarket Opera Company
DESCRIPTION:Haymarket Opera Company\nThey’re back. \nAfter one of our most popular Rendezvous programs to date\, Haymarket Opera Company returns for another unforgettable evening of music\, drama\, and Baroque extravagance. \nHaymarket brings the operatic world of the 17th and 18th centuries vividly to life. The musicians perform on period instruments and embrace the theatrical traditions of the time. The result is anything but distant or delicate. \nThis music is passionate. Funny. Dramatic. Virtuosic. And completely alive. \nFor this Rendezvous program\, soprano Emily Birsan and tenor (TBA) take center stage. They’re joined by Jeri-Lou Zike and Martin Davids on violin\, Craig Trompeter on cello\, and Brandon Acker on theorbo. \nHaymarket has earned national acclaim from The New York Times\, Chicago Tribune\, and Musical America. Audiences far beyond Chicago have also embraced the ensemble and its thrilling approach to period performance. \nBut you don’t need to know anything about Baroque opera to love this evening. \nCome hear extraordinary singers and remarkable instruments up close. Experience music that has captivated audiences for centuries\, performed just a few feet away. \nOld music. Incredible musicians. Absolutely nothing old-fashioned about it. \nFeatured Visual Artist: Max Li\nOur featured visual artist for this program is Max Li\, an interdisciplinary artist from China now based in Chicago. \nWorking across photography\, tintype\, installation\, object-making\, and digital media\, Max explores how meaning is shaped through memory\, ritual\, place\, and lived experience. His work often unfolds over time\, inviting viewers to notice how repetition\, participation\, and everyday encounters can transform the way we see an object or space. \nMax holds an MFA from the University of Chicago and a BFA with Honors from the University of California\, Irvine. Beyond his studio practice\, he develops cultural programs and collaborative projects throughout Chicago\, including work that activates civic and sacred spaces through exhibitions\, performances\, workshops\, and community gatherings.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Katie Grennan\, John Williams & Friends!
DESCRIPTION:Katie Grennan\, John Williams and Friends! \nIt wouldn’t feel like a Rendezvous season without Katie Grennan and John Williams. \nTwo longtime audience favorites return to close out Season 7. This time\, they’re bringing friends. \nTogether\, they’ll share an entirely new program celebrating the music\, energy\, and irresistible spirit of Ireland. \nKatie is one of today’s most exciting Irish fiddlers. A former member of Gaelic Storm\, Katie now performs with Reverie Road\, The Bow Tides\, and STEAM Quartet. She has also appeared with Aoife Scott\, Trinity Irish Dance Company\, Michael Londra\, and the Gardiner Brothers. \nJohn is internationally recognized as one of today’s foremost players of Irish traditional music. John was also a founding member of the groundbreaking ensemble Solas. He toured internationally with the group and earned Grammy nominations. Over his remarkable career\, he has collaborated with artists ranging from The Chieftains and Riverdance to Mavis Staples and the London Symphony Orchestra. \nFor Rendezvous Arts\, Katie and John are creating an evening filled with traditional Irish music\, extraordinary musicians\, great stories\, and plenty of surprises. \nExpect the kind of spontaneous energy that makes it nearly impossible to sit completely still. \nAfter a season of unforgettable music\, we can’t think of a better way to bring it home. \nA few “whews” are practically guaranteed.
