We will explore different mediums\, techniques and genres  in a fun supportive environment\, where your budding artist can develop and grow at their own pace. Ages 12 – 17 \n*Your child may be asked to leave if they do not comply with the rules of the art room. \nWhy take an art class?\n \nTeens can benefit from taking an art class for a variety of reasons. It supports cognitive and emotional development. In particular\, it facilitates executive functioning through planning and organising ideas and solving problems as they emerge during the process.  It is a stress-release and can be therapeutic\,providing a unique way for teens to communicate thoughts\, emotions\, and ideas that might be difficult to express through words alone. The book was named as one of the best memoirs of 2023 by Amazon\, Audible and Goodreads and was chosen as the editors’ choice by the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. The Atlantic said it was one of six books that can “change the way you think about mental illness.” While working at The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel\, she and Susanne Rust were finalists for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting for their investigation of Bisphenol A. DESCRIPTION:Since the sequencing of the genome in 2003\, we have known that humans share 99.9 percent of our DNA with all other humans\, regardless of skin tone or nationality\, indicating that race is not a biological reality as much as a legal and cultural construction. Today\, thanks to sites like Ancestry.com and 23 and Me\, these facts are getting personal\, as Americans discover ancestries that complicate long-held family identities. What should we do when we discover a family secret? And how can our ancestral stories help to illuminate our present moment? \nThis conversation begins with the premise that telling the truth is essential for healing. Join Rachel Jamison Webster\, Professor of Creative Writing at Northwestern University\, as she shares the story of her book\, Benjamin Banneker and Us: Eleven Generations of an American Family. In 2016\, Webster learned about several generations of African American ancestry that had been hidden in her family. This line traced back to the sister of Benjamin Banneker—the first Black man of science. Banneker was a free man living in the Revolutionary era. He helped survey Washington D.C.\, he compiled and published bestselling almanacs\, and he corresponded with Jefferson about the heinous injustice of slavery. \nWebster’s journey led her to celebrate Banneker’s brilliance\, as well as that of his parents\, grandparents\, and sisters\, and to grapple with the ways that racism had clouded the story of her family and country. She found herself in deep relationship and collaboration with her African American cousins—fellow Banneker descendants who came together to collaborate on the book. Together they celebrated their shared ancestors\, and discussed race\, history\, and identity with unflinching honesty. \nWebster will be in conversation with Melissa Blount\, Ph.D.\, an artist\, writer\, and licensed clinical psychologist practicing her craft in Evanston\, IL. It is a monthly storytelling open mic in an enthusiastic\, supportive environment free from pressure\, judgment\, or scoring. No experience is necessary to participate. All are welcome to speak or simply listen. Arrive at 7:15 to sign up for a spot\, and when your name is called\, participants will have up to 7 minutes to tell/read/tap dance any personal story/fiction/essay on proper flossing they’d like. All language and content is acceptable except for hate speech. No cover charge. Beer\, wine and non alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Hosted by Elizabeth Brown\, Mary Lou Gilliam\, and Sarita Miller and Jasmin Rodriguez \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Your Hosts \n \nAs a pathologist\, Elizabeth Brown spent hundreds of hours hunched over either a microscope or a dead body.  She then worked as a consultant to the medical device industry writing technical reports\, all dry as dust and utterly humerous.  Original thoughts were few\, as all statements had to be referenced.   Spreading her wings to creative non-fiction has been a liberating joy.  Elizabeth has performed at story telling events in Highwood\, Arlington Heights\, Evanston and Chicago\, but is delighted to be hosting an open mic in her home town of Lake Forest.\n \n \nMary Lou Gilliam is retired from two careers: English teaching and educational publishing. She has been on the stage since she was 10 doing dramatic readings\, singing\, or some combination thereof. An English major with a theater minor\, she found that teaching extended the performance world when she began writing first person narratives to model both writing and speaking for her students. Because she was born and raised in a small Swedish farm town in western Illinois\, think Garrison Keillor for thematic content. About ten years ago\, while considering retirement\, she took her stories on the road\, so to speak\, by joining Short Story Theatre in the Northshore suburbs. She has also performed at Story Lab Chicago\, Truth Be Told\, and Backyard Stories. Having lived quite a few decades by now\, her narratives include both the travails and thrills of a long (and possibly over-examined) life. She keeps busy with volunteer work\, private tutoring\, international travel\, and as much time with her four grandchildren as she can.\n\n \n\n \nSarita Miller is a retired English/language arts teacher and the mother of two fine adults\, a lovely daughter-in-law\, and one adorable pup. Presently\, Sarita tutors reading\, writing\, and grammar\, something she greatly enjoys. During her days as a middle school teacher\, Sarita was known for telling stories during lessons. Although her students thought they were pulling one over on her and getting her “off task” when they asked for a story\, she explains that doing so was her plan from the beginning. To Sarita\, life is simply stories. She has shared several of hers with audiences at Short Story Theater in Highland Park and Story Lab in Chicago.\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJasmin Rodriguez is a trained actress with over 9 years of stage\, commercial\, film\, storytelling experience. Most recently she completed commercial’s  for Malman Law and Spirit Juice. She has worked  in several independent films\, such as “Faithful Disappointment’s”\, Market Value”  and the TV true crime series “American Greed”. She completed her training at Second City\, Vagabond\, Sarantos Studios\, Wheaton Drama\, and Gorton Drama Studio. Jasmin is a dedicated actress and hard worker who is constantly looking to improve her talents. She is currently in development for producing and acting in an independent short film about human connection. She enjoys nature walks by the lake\, bike riding\, yoga and travels to Europe.   \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

For fifteen years\, he has researched the impact of mindfulness and emotion regulation practices on teaching\, learning\, and leadership in schools. More recently\, he has focused on enhancing health and performance through breathing behavior analysis and heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback training. \nDr. Dewar is also the founder of Matt Dewar\, LLC\, and the creator of the Stress Better® Framework\, which he has shared with collegiate and professional athletes\, Fortune 500 executives\, colleges and universities\, first responders\, and military personnel. DESCRIPTION:We live in enormously divisive times. Divisions based on ​​class\, politics\, race\, religion\, gender\, and nationality are erupting around the globe. The consequences of not having a sense of belonging range from political strife to illness to underperformance at work and in the classroom. Americans have become disconnected from their communities\, and about one in five Americans suffers from chronic loneliness\, especially young adults. Why is our sense of belonging so undermined? What if there were a set of science-backed techniques for navigating modern social life that could help us overcome our differences\, create empathy\, and forge lasting connections across divides? \nGeoffrey L. Cohen\, Ph.D. (FAN ’22)\, Professor of Psychology and the James G. March Professor of Organizational Studies in Education and Business at Stanford University\, answers these questions and more in his extraordinary 2022 book Belonging: The Science of Creating Connection and Bridging Divides. As Prof. Cohen explains\, often inadvertently\, we behave in ways that threaten others’ sense of belonging. Yet small acts that establish connection\, brief activities such as reflecting on our core values\, and a wealth of practices that he refers to under the general rubric of “situation-crafting” have been shown to lessen polarization in our politics\, improve motivation and performance in school and work\, combat racism in our communities\, enhance health and well-being\, and unleash the potential in ourselves and our relationships. One of those children was Kelley Coleman’s son\, born with a rare (and still undiagnosed) genetic syndrome. Feeling equal parts terrified and alone\, she soon learned that no one tells parents how to do any of this. In her new book\, Everything No One Tells You About Parenting a Disabled Child: Your Guide to the Essential System\, Services\, and Supports\, Coleman\, a feature film development executive turned author and passionate advocate for parent caregivers and individuals with disabilities\, turns her hard-earned expertise into the much needed “You Are Here” on the map of this unexpected journey. \nPresented with empathy and humor\, the book gives parents the tools to navigate the complex medical\, educational\, and social service systems necessary for disabled children to thrive. DESCRIPTION:This fun workshop is designed to help students get hands-on with 3D printers. They will get an in-depth introduction and usage experience with 3D printing. They will get to design basic shapes using Tinkercad\, learn to use slicing software\, upload to a printer\, and print the shapes they design. Ages 8 – 12 years old. \nSTUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED (BUT NOT REQUIRED) TO BRING THEIR OWN LAPTOP OR IPAD! \nThis 2-day workshop runs on Saturday\, April 20 and 27\, 9am – 12pm \nDr. Jayant Joshi holds a PhD in Materials Science and has been a passionate proponent of the 3D printing industry.
