DESCRIPTION:DNS always takes place the second Wednesday of the month (except February) – Walk-ins are welcome!\nDo Not Submit Lake Forest takes place in a cozy room in the Gorton Center\, Lake Forest. It is a monthly storytelling open mic in an enthusiastic\, supportive environment free from pressure\, judgment\, or scoring. No experience is necessary to participate. All are welcome to speak or simply listen. Arrive at 7:15 to sign up for a spot\, and when your name is called\, participants will have up to 7 minutes to tell/read/tap dance any personal story/fiction/essay on proper flossing they’d like. All language and content is acceptable except for hate speech. No cover charge. Beer\, wine and non alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Hosted by Elizabeth Brown\, Mary Lou Gilliam\, and Sarita Miller and Jasmin Rodriguez \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Your Hosts \n \nAs a pathologist\, Elizabeth Brown spent hundreds of hours hunched over either a microscope or a dead body.  She then worked as a consultant to the medical device industry writing technical reports\, all dry as dust and utterly humerous.  Original thoughts were few\, as all statements had to be referenced.   Spreading her wings to creative non-fiction has been a liberating joy.  Elizabeth has performed at story telling events in Highwood\, Arlington Heights\, Evanston and Chicago\, but is delighted to be hosting an open mic in her home town of Lake Forest.\n \n \nMary Lou Gilliam is retired from two careers: English teaching and educational publishing. She has been on the stage since she was 10 doing dramatic readings\, singing\, or some combination thereof. An English major with a theater minor\, she found that teaching extended the performance world when she began writing first person narratives to model both writing and speaking for her students. Because she was born and raised in a small Swedish farm town in western Illinois\, think Garrison Keillor for thematic content. About ten years ago\, while considering retirement\, she took her stories on the road\, so to speak\, by joining Short Story Theatre in the Northshore suburbs. She has also performed at Story Lab Chicago\, Truth Be Told\, and Backyard Stories. Having lived quite a few decades by now\, her narratives include both the travails and thrills of a long (and possibly over-examined) life. She keeps busy with volunteer work\, private tutoring\, international travel\, and as much time with her four grandchildren as she can.\n\n \n\n \nSarita Miller is a retired English/language arts teacher and the mother of two fine adults\, a lovely daughter-in-law\, and one adorable pup. Presently\, Sarita tutors reading\, writing\, and grammar\, something she greatly enjoys. During her days as a middle school teacher\, Sarita was known for telling stories during lessons. Although her students thought they were pulling one over on her and getting her “off task” when they asked for a story\, she explains that doing so was her plan from the beginning. To Sarita\, life is simply stories. She has shared several of hers with audiences at Short Story Theater in Highland Park and Story Lab in Chicago.\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJasmin Rodriguez is a trained actress with over 9 years of stage\, commercial\, film\, storytelling experience. Most recently she completed commercial’s  for Malman Law and Spirit Juice. She has worked  in several independent films\, such as “Faithful Disappointment’s”\, Market Value”  and the TV true crime series “American Greed”. She completed her training at Second City\, Vagabond\, Sarantos Studios\, Wheaton Drama\, and Gorton Drama Studio. Jasmin is a dedicated actress and hard worker who is constantly looking to improve her talents. She is currently in development for producing and acting in an independent short film about human connection. She enjoys nature walks by the lake\, bike riding\, yoga and travels to Europe.   \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Americans have become disconnected from their communities\, and about one in five Americans suffers from chronic loneliness\, especially young adults. Why is our sense of belonging so undermined? What if there were a set of science-backed techniques for navigating modern social life that could help us overcome our differences\, create empathy\, and forge lasting connections across divides? \nGeoffrey L. Cohen\, Ph.D. (FAN ’22)\, Professor of Psychology and the James G. March Professor of Organizational Studies in Education and Business at Stanford University\, answers these questions and more in his extraordinary 2022 book Belonging: The Science of Creating Connection and Bridging Divides. DESCRIPTION:We are more than the circumstances of our lives\, and what we do matters. In We Are the Leaders We Have Been Looking For\, Eddie S. Glaude Jr.\, Ph.D.\, one of the nation’s preeminent scholars and a New York Times bestselling author\, makes the case that the hard work of becoming a better person should be a critical feature of Black politics. Through virtuoso interpretations of Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Malcolm X\, and Ella Baker\, Dr. Glaude shows how ordinary people have the capacity to be the heroes that our democracy so desperately requires\, rather than outsourcing their needs to leaders who purportedly represent them. \nThe book begins with Dr. Glaude’s unease with the Obama years. He felt then\, and does even more urgently now\, that the excitement around the Obama presidency had become a disciplining tool to narrow legitimate forms of Black political dissent. This narrowing continues to undermine the well-being of Black communities. In response\, Dr. Glaude guides us away from enthusiastic reliance on elected leaders and full surrender to a belief in unchanging political structures. He weaves anecdotes about his own evolving views on Black politics together with the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson\, John Dewey\, Sheldon Wolin\, Toni Morrison\, James Baldwin\, and Ralph Ellison. \nDr. Glaude (FAN ’20) is the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor at Princeton University and the author of several books\, including Democracy in Black and the New York Times bestseller Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own\, winner of the Harriet Beecher Stowe Book Prize. \nDr. Glaude will be in conversation with Lisa L. Moore\, Ph.D.\, LICSW\, Senior Lecturer and Director of the Master’s Program in Social Work\, Social Policy\, and Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work\, Policy\, and Practice. SUMMARY:Kaia String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Kaia String Quartet: \nFrom the tango of the Rio de la Plata to the string quartets of Silvestre Revueltas\, the KAIA String Quartet is an ensemble devoted to promoting the rich and colorful music of Latin America. \nThe Quartet plays an active role in Chicago’s music scene and has performed at the Chicago Latino Music Festival\, the Ear Taxi Festival\, and Chamber Music on the Fox. In 2017\, KAIA was the first ensemble in residence at Chicago’s classical radio station\, WFMT. \nCelebrated by Downbeat magazine for its ability to “beautifully blur the lines between jazz\, classical\, Latin and world music” KAIA’s album collaboration with Fareed Haque was chosen by Chicago Tribune’s Howard Reich as one of the top ten classical recordings of 2018. Their album\, Sureño\, explores the music and relationship of Argentinian composers Astor Piazzolla and José Bragato. The latest recording project released in 2020 includes a collaboration with jazz pianist Ryan Cohan in his work Originations.\nKAIA is deeply devoted to music education. They are teaching artists for Ravinia’s Reach*Teach*Play program and for the International Music Foundation’s Live Music Now program. KAIA founded DePaul University’s Community Music Division chamber program where they inspire the next generation of performers. \nFriday night concert timeline / Concessions for sale\, including beer & wine \n7:00-8:15 PM concert (no intermission)\n8:15-8:45 PM conversation with artists \nPainter by: Ken Reif \n“The truth will set you free.” For me that truth is in my artwork. Turning two dimensional surfaces into compositions that evoke emotion. Painting and the instruction I have received has changed the way I view the world. I am set free every time I stand at the easel. I am set free when I look through the Artist eye. I am set free to create. \nAt an early age I formed a deep respect for nature\, a respect I transfer to canvas. I am also a musician and my love of music compels me to paint portraits of musicians too.  I begin the process with priming the surface black then using an impressionist palette I create my work. Capturing through the Artist eye vibrant colors which evokes emotion\, causing the viewer to pause\, to think and to enjoy in the now.\nI consider my work to be “Renewable Energy”. The viewer is renewed with each viewing\, much like listening to your favorite music. \n     \nThis is part of the Rendezvous Arts Series

She has her BA in Theatre Arts and Masters of Fine Arts in Performance. \n  \n \nAbout Our Artistic Director: Jeremy Kruse\, Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. Jeremy is a professional actor\, published playwright\, award-winning screenwriter\, and award-winning filmmaker. Some of the classes he taught at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York include Method Acting\, Comedic Improvisation\, Sketch Comedy Writing\, and Acting for Film and TV. He graduated from The Strasberg Institute at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in drama.
