In Normal Broken: The Grief Companion for When It’s Time to Heal But You’re Not Sure You Want To\, award-winning writer and speaker Kelly Cervantes isn’t trying to tell you what to do\, how to feel\, or the right way to heal. She’s also not flinging sunny thoughts\, vibes\, and prayers at you. After losing her daughter to epilepsy\, she knows that grief is many things. It’s weird. It sucks. It’s all-encompassing. Something everyone will have to deal with. But never linear. Just as what we are grieving varies\, so do our journeys to process it. \nNormal Broken was born out of this desire to meet people where they are in their grief journeys\, to lend a hand\, or maybe to just sit in the dark with them. DESCRIPTION:Areta will guide you through a traditional vinyasa flow yoga class incorporating poses\, breath work and meditation. This bi-weekly one-hour practice will help release tension and bring you back into balance while opening\, lengthening and strengthening the body.  Whether you are new to yoga or an experienced practitioner\, this mindful flow class will leave you feeling renewed and energized.  Bring a mat and a water bottle. \nTraditional Vinyasa Flow Yoga is a dynamic style of yoga that emphasizes the synchronization of breath and movement as practitioners flow through a sequence of poses. It combines the ancient practice of yoga with a modern approach that focuses on creating a fluid and rhythmic movement pattern. Vinyasa Flow is known for its creative sequencing and the way it allows practitioners to explore their bodies\, breath\, and minds in a harmonious way. \nTaking a yoga class can offer a variety of physical\, mental\, and emotional benefits including improving cardiovascular health\, reducing stress and tension and leaving you feeling more energized and revitalized. \nAreta has been teaching yoga in Lake Forest and in yoga studios along the North Shore for 10 years and is E-RYT 500 Certified. Areta’s passion is bringing yoga to EVERY BODY\, and has additional certifications in Meditation\, Adaptive Yoga for Disabilities\, Senior Yoga\, Love Your Brain for traumatic brain injury\, Yoga for Eating Disorder Recovery\, Yin Yoga\, and Yoga for 12 Step Recovery. From her #1 New York Times bestseller\, Reviving Ophelia\, which helped explain the unique challenges faced by adolescent girls\, to her most recent New York Times bestseller\, Women Rowing North\, which explores the experiences faced by women as they grow older\, Pipher has been a source of comfort and strength for women at all stages of life. \nPipher’s new memoir in essays\, A Life in Light: Meditations on Impermanence offers wisdom\, hope\, and insight into loss and change. Drawing from her own experiences and expertise as a psychologist specializing in women\, trauma\, and the effect of our culture on our mental health\, she looks inward in A Life in Light to what shaped her as a woman\, one who has experienced darkness throughout her life but was always drawn to the light. “Resilience is the ability to find light in dark times\,” offers Pipher\, “We build it by our attitudes\, efforts\, and coping skills. DESCRIPTION:WALK-INS WELCOME!\n\nDNS always takes place the second Wednesday of the month (except February)\nDo Not Submit-Lake Forest is a monthly storytelling open mic in an enthusiastic\, supportive environment free from pressure\, judgment\, or scoring. No experience is necessary to participate. All are welcome to speak or simply listen. Arrive at 7:15 to sign up for a spot\, and when your name is called\, participants will have up to 7 minutes to tell/read/tap dance any personal story/fiction/essay they’d like. All language and content is acceptable except for hate speech. \n\nDNS-LF takes place in Suite 215-a cozy room on the second floor of Gorton Center.\nBeer\, wine and nonalcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.\nHosted by Elizabeth Brown\, Mary Lou Gilliam\, and Sarita Miller and Jasmin Rodriguez\n\nAs a pathologist\, Elizabeth Brown spent hundreds of hours hunched over either a microscope or a dead body.  She then worked as a consultant to the medical device industry writing technical reports\, all dry as dust and utterly humorous. Original thoughts were few\, as all statements had to be referenced.   Spreading her wings to creative non-fiction has been a liberating joy. Elizabeth has performed at storytelling events in Highwood\, Arlington Heights\, Evanston and Chicago\, but is delighted to be hosting an open mic in her home town of Lake Forest.  \n  \nMary Lou Gilliam is retired from two careers: English teaching and educational publishing. She has been on the stage since she was 10 doing dramatic readings\, singing\, or some combination thereof. An English major with a theater minor\, she found that teaching extended the performance world when she began writing first person narratives to model both writing and speaking for her students. Because she was born and raised in a small Swedish farm town in western Illinois\, think Garrison Keillor for thematic content. About ten years ago\, while considering retirement\, she took her stories on the road\, so to speak\, by joining Short Story Theatre in the Northshore suburbs. She has also performed at Story Lab Chicago\, Truth Be Told\, and Backyard Stories. Having lived quite a few decades by now\, her narratives include both the travails and thrills of a long (and possibly over-examined) life. She keeps busy with volunteer work\, private tutoring\, international travel\, and as much time with her four grandchildren as she can.  \nSarita Miller is a retired English/language arts teacher and the mother of two fine adults\, a lovely daughter-in-law\, and one adorable pup. Presently\, Sarita tutors reading\, writing\, and grammar\, something she greatly enjoys. During her days as a middle school teacher\, Sarita was known for telling stories during lessons. Although her students thought they were pulling one over on her and getting her “off task” when they asked for a story\, she explains that doing so was her plan from the beginning. To Sarita\, life is simply stories. She has shared several of hers with                                                                       audiences at Short Story Theater in HP and Story Lab in Chicago. \n  \nJasmin Rodriguez is a trained actress with over 9 years of stage\, commercial\, film\, storytelling experience. Most recently she completed commercial’s  for Malman Law and Spirit Juice. She has worked  in several independent films\, such as “Faithful Disappointment’s”\, Market Value”  and the TV true crime series “American Greed”. She completed her training at Second City\, Vagabond\, Sarantos Studios\, Wheaton Drama\, and Gorton Drama Studio. Jasmin is a dedicated actress and hard worker who is constantly looking to improve her talents. She is currently in development for producing and acting in an independent short film about human connection. She enjoys nature walks by the lake\,                                                                         bike riding\, yoga and travels to Europe.

These well-known favorites are sure to put you in the holiday mood! \nChris White is a talented musician originally from Toronto\, Canada\, and now a highly sought-after artist in the Chicago and greater Midwest region\, regularly performing at jazz hubs like The Green Mill\, The Jazz Showcase\, Andy’s\, the House of Blues\, and more. A doctoral graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, he is currently an instructor of jazz piano and theory at Lake Forest College\, North Park University\, and North Central College. \n
