SUMMARY:HOW TO STOP TRYING: AN OVERACHIEVER'S GUIDE TO SELF-ACCEPTANCE\, LETTING GO\, AND OTHER IMPOSSIBLE THINGS
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever heard someone say\, “I’m trying to make it work\,” and thought\, “That sounds like a great idea”? Probably not. Because the thing about trying is that it’s tiring; it’s labor. Anyone who has tried to have fun or to relax or to fall asleep knows this to be true. \nAnd yet: we exist within a culture that encourages us—often with a frantic urgency—to try\, and try harder. We are told to try a different approach\, try to do or be better\, try to squeeze in a little bit more. This is especially true of women\, who not only have to try harder than men to receive access to the same opportunities and resources\, but who are also conditioned to try in the name of meeting others’ needs and expectations\, often at the expense of their own well-being. \nIn her new book\, How to Stop Trying: An Overachiever’s Guide to Self-Acceptance\, Letting Go\, and Other Impossible Things\, writer Kate Williams tackles hustle culture head-on\, exploring the ways in which women are primed to become relentless strivers. From the workplace to motherhood\, from relationships to “self-care”—no arena of a woman’s life is safe from the pressure to exceed expectations. This conflation of self-worth with achievement\, she argues\, is both toxic and counterproductive\, as the qualities we most seek—happiness\, meaning\, purpose—are not earned but rather owned. \nKnown for her astute cultural analysis and pitch-perfect observations of generational trends\, Williams takes readers on a journey rooted in her own struggle to divest from an overachieving identity\, including the realizations that came in the wake of a painful fertility challenge. Deeply felt\, passionately argued\, and often laugh-out-loud funny\, this is a book for every woman who has ever wondered what would happen if she stopped trying so hard—and just let go. \nWilliams will be in conversation with Jennifer Mathieu\, the critically acclaimed author of seven novels for young adults including Moxie\, which is now a major motion picture directed by Amy Poehler (Netflix). Her books have been translated into over twenty languages. A former journalist\, Mathieu is a graduate of Northwestern University and has been a teacher for nearly twenty years. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:ORIGINAL SINS: THE (MIS)EDUCATION OF BLACK AND NATIVE CHILDREN AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF AMERICAN RACISM
DESCRIPTION:If all children could just get an education\, the logic goes\, they would have the same opportunities later in life. But this historical tour de force makes it clear that the opposite is true: The U.S. school system has played an instrumental role in creating and upholding racial hierarchies and racism\, preparing children to expect unequal treatment throughout their lives. \nIn her new bestselling book Original Sins: The (Mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism\, Eve L. Ewing\, Ed.D. (FAN ’18) demonstrates that our schools were designed to propagate the idea of white intellectual superiority\, to “civilize” Native students and to prepare Black students for menial labor. Education was not an afterthought for the Founding Fathers; it was envisioned by Thomas Jefferson as an institution that would fortify the country’s racial hierarchy. Ewing argues that these dynamics persist in a curriculum that continues to minimize the horrors of American history. The most insidious aspects of this system fall below the radar in the forms of standardized testing\, academic tracking\, disciplinary policies\, and uneven access to resources. \nBy demonstrating that it’s in the DNA of American schools to serve as an effective and underacknowledged mechanism maintaining inequality in this country today\, Ewing makes the case that we need a profound reevaluation of what schools are supposed to do\, and for whom. This book will change the way people understand the place we send our children for eight hours a day. \nEwing is an associate professor in the Department of Race\, Diaspora\, and Indigeneity at the University of Chicago and the author of four books\, including Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Racism and School Closings on Chicago’s South Side. Her work has been published in The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, The New York Times\, and many other venues. \nEwing will be in conversation with Ta-Nehisi Coates (FAN ’17\, ’19)\, author of The Beautiful Struggle\, We Were Eight Years in Power\, The Water Dancer\, The Message\, and Between the World and Me\, which won the National Book Award in 2015. He is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship. \nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY! FAN is giving away copies of Original Sins to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Divorcing with Dignity
DESCRIPTION:THIS SESSION HAS BEEN CANCELLED. PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE NEXT ONE ON JUNE 10.\nAre you or someone you care about facing the difficult decision of divorce? This informative and compassionate workshop is designed to help individuals and couples better understand their options and find a peaceful\, cost-effective way to move forward. Divorce is never easy\, but with the right tools and guidance\, it doesn’t have to be destructive. \nThis session focuses on divorce mediation—a respectful\, cooperative process that empowers couples to make all of their own decisions regarding parenting plans\, division of property and finances\, child support\, and alimony. Mediation offers a collaborative alternative to the traditional adversarial legal process\, allowing couples to prioritize the well-being of their family\, especially their children\, during an emotionally challenging time. \nIf both individuals can communicate respectfully and act with fairness and reason\, mediation can significantly reduce the emotional and financial toll of divorce. Unlike litigation\, which can be lengthy\, expensive\, and combative\, mediation is private\, quicker\, less costly\, and far less stressful. \nIn this workshop\, you will: \n\n\nLearn what divorce mediation is and how it works \n\n\nUnderstand the qualifications for pursuing mediation \n\n\nDiscover the benefits of mediation versus traditional divorce litigation \n\n\nHear real-world examples of successful mediated divorces \n\n\nReceive resources to help you begin the process\, if and when you’re ready \n\n\nWhether you’re in the early stages of considering divorce or already in the process\, this workshop will provide clarity\, support\, and practical information to help you make the best decisions for yourself and your family. \nTake the first step toward a more peaceful resolution—join us to explore if mediation is right for you. \nIf you cannot attend in-person\, you can contact Michael Cohen through his website at michaelsmediation.com to meet 1:1 to review this same information in a confidential manner. \nMichael Cohen is a divorce mediator in Lake Forest who is dedicated to helping families get through the stressful process of a divorce in the healthiest way for the couple and for their children.  During a successful career leading diverse teams for a large local company\, Michael trained at Northwestern University to gain his divorce mediation certification and has built a practice whose purpose is to help others.  Michael is a caring\, empathetic leader who will take the time to understand your passions and priorities\, and will guide you to help you create the best solutions for you and your families.

Over this four-week Mahjong course\, you will learn how to play Mahjong based on the National Mahjong rules. Mahjong\, a tile-based game created in 19th century China\, is a social tabletop game that is competitive\, exciting\, mentally stimulating and very fun. So\, even if you’ve taken sessions previously\, there is always more strategy to learn! \nParticipants will need to purchase the new 2025 Mahjong cards and they are available here –  national mahjong league \nAbout Mahjong\nMahjong is a tiled tabletop game that originated in China in the 19th century and has become a staple of Chinese culture and daily life. Although there are many different variations of the game; almost every region of China has its own specialty version\, Mahjong is often played as a four-person game with painted tiles in different suits. Although specific rules vary\, the general goal is to make sets of the same suit or same number\, similar to gin rummy.  \nMahjong was imported to the US in the early 20th century. American Mahjong\, a version created in Chinese neighborhoods in the US\, was first played in the 1920s and has become the most common version played in the US. Sign up for Debbie’s Mahjong class to learn more about the game and get some hands-on experience.  \n \nNot only is Mahjong an exciting tabletop game played with friends\, it is also a stimulating mental exercise. While not conclusive\, research suggests that brain games\, such as Mahjong\, can help improve memory retention\, mental sharpness and reduce the risk of dementia. Either way\, Gorton’s Mahjong class is guaranteed to lift your spirits and add some excitement to your week.  \nDebbie Meyer has been playing Mahjong for over 20 years. She loves the game and how each hand is different. Debbie’s passion is to teach the game of Mahjong to others!

Despite its slow pace\, Tai Chi is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits of Tai Chi below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s Tai Chi class. \nHealth Benefits of Tai Chi \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found Tai Chi is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s Tai Chi class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nTai Chi is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. For ages 7 – 14 \nWhy learn to fence?\nFencing is a great activity to build balance\, physical coordination and agility\, skills that transfer to other sports and daily life. Although fencing can be a physically demanding sport\, you do not need to be a natural athlete to learn to fence. Our fencing class is designed to ease you into the sport and help you connect with your own body. \nThe sport of fencing exercises your mental as well as physical reflexes. Quick thinking\, strategy and creativity are all skills fencing can help enhance. In fact\, fencing’s combined physical activity with mental stimulation can help improve cognitive function and critical thinking skills. Fencing’s code of conduct also helps to teach the importance of discipline\, respect\, responsibility and good sportsmanship. \nHistory of Fencing\nDid you know the archaeological evidence of fencing dates back to 1190 B.C.E.? The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility. \nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. They have been serving the Chicagoland community for over 10 years. Their experience comes from National\, NCAA\, and Olympic champions.
