SUMMARY:Take Your Painting to the Next Level
DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your painting to the next level?\nThis class is ideal for artists who already have some experience painting in Oil\, Acrylic\, Gouache\, or Pastel and are ready to grow their skills further. If you’ve been wanting to turn a photo into a painting or have started a piece but feel unsure about how to move forward\, this is the perfect opportunity to get expert guidance and renewed inspiration. \nEach student brings in either a reference photo or an unfinished painting to work on during class. From there\, artist and instructor Michael Latala provides hands-on\, individualized instruction to help you make confident artistic decisions. First\, he’ll show you how to evaluate your photo reference—guiding you in choosing what elements to include and what to leave out. Then\, through clear demonstrations\, he’ll help you resolve common issues like washed-out highlights or areas that have gone too dark to read. \nThroughout the class\, Michael gives each student personal attention. If you’d prefer to keep your canvas untouched\, he’s happy to demonstrate his suggestions digitally using Procreate on his iPad Pro. This digital approach allows you to visualize changes before applying them\, which can be especially helpful when exploring different color choices or compositional edits. \nImportantly\, this class is all about progress at your own pace. There’s no pressure to finish quickly. Instead\, you’re encouraged to slow down\, focus on what you’re learning\, and enjoy the process. With consistent support and practice\, you’ll discover how to turn your ideas into beautiful\, well-executed paintings—just the way you imagined them. \nThis series runs on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month: \n\nMay 14 & 28\nJune 11 & 25\nJuly 9 & 23\nAugust 13 & 27

SUMMARY:Salsarobics
DESCRIPTION:Get Ready to Move with SALSArobics!\nJoin Esther Gutierrez Sloan every Friday for a dynamic workout that blends fun\, rhythm\, and full-body movement. This class isn’t just about exercise – it’s about joy\, discovery\, and the thrill of dance! \nThroughout the session\, participants choose their intensity level – low\, moderate\, or high – while moving to irresistible Latin\, Caribbean\, Spanish\, and African beats. Options for both low-impact and high-impact movements allow everyone to customize their experience. \nEach class delivers an energizing workout that averages 4\,000 to 4\,200 steps\, with varying degrees of intensity. Esther integrates the Total Body Training (TBT) Systems Methodology to support proper posture and promote muscle conditioning. She also incorporates Peripheral Heart Action (PHA) Training\, offering an optional challenge that builds aerobic strength based on individual pace and rhythm. \nTo build coordination and balance\, the class includes inline motion drills. Participants move across the room using steps that change direction – laterally\, diagonally\, forward\, and backward – adding functional movement to the workout. \nThe session concludes with Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching to enhance flexibility and recovery. \nColombian-born Esther Gutierrez Sloan created SALSArobics in 1989 to fuse authentic Latin rhythms with aerobic exercise. She has performed on national and local television in Illinois\, California\, Florida\, and New York. In addition to leading classes\, she has presented SALSArobics at fitness conventions\, schools\, health clubs\, ethnic festivals\, and international events. \nIn recognition of her groundbreaking work\, Esther was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2010. SUMMARY:INSIDE THE BOX: HOW CONSTRAINTS MAKE US BETTER
DESCRIPTION:We live in a world that gives us seemingly infinite choices and prizes freedom above all else. We have an unprecedented number of options regarding what to do\, who to be\, and how to spend our time. All that choice is wonderful; it is also overwhelming. The irony is that total freedom can be paralyzing\, and unlimited resources don’t necessarily lead to the biggest breakthroughs. In fact\, overvaluing complete freedom can be disastrous for everything from starting a company to harnessing creativity to finding personal satisfaction. \nIn his new book\, Inside the Box: How Constraints Make Us Better\, bestselling author David Epstein (FAN ’16\, ’20) argues that all of us—individuals\, businesses\, institutions\, even societies—can benefit from narrowing our options. He dives into the science and practice of constraints\, exploring exactly when and how guardrails can be beneficial\, whether we’re working with limited resources or using self-imposed boundaries to tap unexpected wells of focus and innovation. \nOriginal\, galvanizing\, and deeply researched\, Inside the Box tells absorbing stories of people and organizations that embraced constraints to transform themselves\, and the world—as well as a few that struggled from a lack of limits. Epstein reveals how boundaries create breakthroughs\, and how setting the right constraints can help you become the most creative\, productive\, and satisfied version of yourself. \nEpstein will be in conversation with Megan Twohey\, an investigative reporter at The New York Times who seeks to expose hidden truths and hold powerful individuals and institutions to account. She is the co-author\, with Jodi Kantor (FAN ’26)\, of She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story that Helped Ignite a Movement\, which takes readers behind the scenes of the Harvey Weinstein investigation and was adapted into a film. Twohey and Kantor shared a Pulitzer Prize for public service for their reporting. \nBoth featured guests are ETHS alums: Epstein is ‘98\, and Twohey is ‘94. \nBook Giveaway: FAN is giving away copies of Inside the Box to attendees\, while supplies last. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. It will be recorded but not live streamed and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

Bring your favorite beverage and sip as you create. \nSo grab a friend\, bring a date\, or come solo and make new connections. Either way\, you’ll leave with more than just a painting – you’ll walk away with memories\, laughter\, and maybe even a brand-new hobby. \n*All wine will be included. SUMMARY:Cinderella: The Workshop Camp
DESCRIPTION:Cinderella: The Workshop Camp\nThis special session focuses on exploring and testing material for Gorton Drama Studio’s original adaptation of Cinderella. This work will later inform both the Gorton Two-Week Musical Theater Camp and the Four-week Musical Theater Camp later this summer. \nThroughout the week\, students will work closely with experienced teaching artists. Together\, they explore songs\, dialogue\, and choreography. Along the way\, they experiment with character\, storytelling\, and movement. Campers are encouraged to ask questions\, try bold ideas\, and take creative risks. As a result\, they gain insight into how a musical comes to life – from early drafts to performance-ready moments. Most importantly\, the focus stays on process\, creativity\, and ensemble collaboration rather than polish or perfection. \nThen\, at the end of the week\, the camp wraps up with a short\, informal presentation for family and friends. This low-key showing offers a glimpse into what the students have created together. Rather than a fully staged production\, it celebrates experimentation\, growth\, and shared discovery. \nOverall\, this camp is ideal for students who love creative exploration. It’s a great fit for those who want to deepen their performance skills and be a part of developing something new. \nPlease note: Participation in this camp does not affect casting or roles in any other Gorton Drama Studio programs\, including the two-week or four-week camps later in the summer. \nWhat Makes This Camp Special\n\nHands-on\, creative experience for young performers to help shape a brand-new adaptation of “Cinderella.”\nExplore and test material – including songs\, dialogue\, and choreography – that will be used in the Two-Week and Four-Week “Cinderella” Musical Theater Camps later in the summer.\nLow-pressure environment that encourages experimentation\, risk-taking\, and creative exploration.\nDiscover how a musical comes to life\, from first drafts to performance.\nCulminates in a short\, informal presentation for family and friends.\nCelebrates collaboration\, imagination\, and the joy of creating something new.\n\nWhat Campers Will Learn\n\nHow to explore character\, storytelling\, and movement in a musical theater setting.\nThe process of developing songs\, dialogue\, and choreography.\nHow to work collaboratively.\nConfidence in trying bold ideas and problem-solving.\nHow a musical comes together from concept to stage.\n\nCreative Team\n\nJeremy Kruse\, Producer & Playwright\nMadison Kisst\, Director\nMatt Mueller\, Song Writer – Broadway actor\, returning for his second year\, collaborating with Jeremy to create original music for the show\n\nStudents will receive both individual and group guidance throughout the process\, ensuring growth at every level. \nCamp Details:\nProject: “Cinderella”: The Workshop Camp\nPresentation Length: 30 minutes\nAges: 8–14\nPrice: $450\n \nDates: Monday\, June 8 to Friday\, June 12 \nDaily Schedule: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm \nPresentation: Friday\, June 12 \nPerformance in a Professional Theater\nThe presentation will take place in the 309-seat John and Nancy Hughes Theater\, a professional venue. \nThis is a promo video from last year’s production of Peter Pan Now. \nThis is a behind-the-scenes look at what we do at camp. \nThis one-week camp is perfect for curious\, creative young performers who love experimenting and exploring new ideas.
