SUMMARY:PSYCHO
DESCRIPTION:A secretary on the run makes a fatal stop at a lonely motel\nMarion Crane (Janet Leigh) is tired of her ordinary life in Phoenix. She longs to marry her boyfriend\, Sam Loomis (John Gavin)\, but money stands in the way. One Friday afternoon\, temptation wins. Marion steals $40\,000 from her employer and hits the road. Her plan is simple: reach Sam\, pay off his debts\, and start fresh. \nBut the journey takes a dark turn. As night falls\, heavy rain pounds the highway. Marion grows anxious\, nervous about the police\, and desperate for rest. She pulls off onto a deserted back road. There\, a flickering neon sign appears through the storm: Bates Motel. \nThe motel looks worn and forgotten. Its owner\, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins)\, steps out to greet her. He’s shy\, polite\, even boyish. He offers Marion a meal and friendly conversation. Yet something about him feels off. Norman speaks often of his mother\, who lives in the looming house on the hill. His tone shifts from tender to bitter. His smile hides unease. \nOver dinner\, Marion rethinks her choices. She decides to return the money and face the consequences. But she never gets the chance. In the dead of night\, the bathroom curtain rips open\, and Marion’s story ends in a shocking burst of violence. \nFrom here\, the story shifts. A suspicious sister\, a determined boyfriend\, and a curious private detective come looking for answers. Their search circles back to Norman and the suffocating shadow of his mother. \nAlfred Hitchcock directs Psycho with relentless tension. Quick cuts\, stark shadows\, and Bernard Herrmann’s piercing score pull viewers into a world where safety unravels in seconds. Every scene builds dread. Every revelation twists deeper. And the final truth about Norman Bates delivers one of cinema’s most unforgettable shocks. \nWriters: Joseph Stefano\, Robert Bloch\nStars: Anthony Perkins\, Janet Leigh\, Vera Miles

SUMMARY:Tai Chi
DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, it is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s class. \nHealth Benefits \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found it is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nIt is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

SUMMARY:HAUNTED MANSION
DESCRIPTION:The Story of Gracey Manor\nGabbie (Rosario Dawson)\, a widowed doctor\, is ready for a new chapter. After losing her husband\, she leaves the busy streets of New York behind. With her young son\, Travis\, she heads to New Orleans in search of a fresh start. Their new home is Gracey Manor\, a sprawling old mansion with crumbling walls and plenty of character. Gabbie imagines transforming it into a charming bed and breakfast. At first\, it feels like a dream. But soon\, the dream twists into something far darker. \nStrange noises echo through the halls. Shadows move where no one should be. Doors slam on their own. Gabbie and Travis realize quickly that the house is not only dilapidated – it is haunted. And not by just one ghost. Spirits fill every room. Some are playful. Others are menacing. All of them make life inside the manor nearly impossible. \nDesperate for help\, Gabbie seeks out experts in the paranormal. She gathers an unlikely team. A priest\, a psychic\, a historian\, and a ghost tour guide step into the mansion\, each bringing their own skills. Together\, they face the mysteries inside Gracey Manor. Yet the deeper they look\, the more dangerous the secrets become. \nHatbox Ghost\nAt the center of the haunting stands the Hatbox Ghost\, portrayed through motion capture and voice by Jared Leto. He is eerie\, calculating\, and relentless. His presence is not random. He is tied to a sinister plot involving lost souls and the mansion’s original owner\, William Gracey. Long ago\, Gracey’s grief led him down a path of obsession and rituals. Now\, those choices threaten to bind both the living and the dead in eternal darkness. \nThe group must uncover the truth\, fight back against the Hatbox Ghost\, and free the manor before it consumes them all. Gracey Manor is more than a house – it is a trap. And only courage\, unity\, and quick thinking can break its hold. \nJoin us for this fun-filled story of scares and excitement! \nDirector: Justin Simien\nWriter: Katie Dippold\nStars: LaKeith Stanfield\, Rosario Dawson\, Owen Wilson

SUMMARY:ROUNDTABLE WORKSHOP: DEALING WITH FEELING (EVENT 1 OF 4)
DESCRIPTION:Space is limited to 100 attendees. REGISTRATION REQUIRED!\nIn Dealing with Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want\, Marc Brackett\, Ph.D. (FAN ’19)\, offers an essential guide for regulating how we respond to our emotions to transform our lives. \nSuccess in virtually every aspect of life―career\, friendship\, love\, and family―is determined mainly by one thing: how we deal with emotions. In your most challenging moments\, how did you respond? Did you fly off the handle? Were you paralyzed by indecision? Did you engage in behaviors that undermined your best intentions? Or did you exhibit grace under pressure and flourish? How you responded likely shaped what happened next. But emotion regulation isn’t a fixed trait\, as many believe. It is a set of skills and strategies that must be learned\, practiced\, and refined over a lifetime. \nBrackett examines his own challenges dealing with emotions\, explains the latest science of emotion regulation\, and provides a set of practical\, evidence-based strategies to help us use our feelings wisely to nurture healthy relationships\, achieve ambitious goals\, and experience greater well-being. At the heart of his message is acceptance: There are no bad emotions―only emotions we don’t understand or know how to direct in positive\, intentional ways. \nBy honing our emotion regulation skills\, we can increase our chances of achieving success in all facets of our lives. Dealing with Feeling will show you how to work with your and others’ emotions―not against them―so you can become the best version of yourself and lift others up\, too. \nBrackett is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence\, a professor in the Child Study Center at Yale University\, and the author of the 2019 bestselling book Permission to Feel: The Power of Emotional Intelligence to Achieve Well-Being and Success. He is the lead developer of RULER\, an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning that has been adopted by more than five thousand schools around the globe. In 2024\, he launched the YouTube webcast Dealing with Feelings. \nThis event is suitable for youth 12+. It will not be recorded or live streamed.

SUMMARY:Kindermusik Level 3-4 (3-5 year olds)
DESCRIPTION:The Kindermusik curriculum blends music\, movement\, pretend play\, storytelling\, and community building. Each element works together to create a rich and engaging experience for your child. Every class helps children listen closely\, reflect on what they hear\, and compare sounds and ideas. They learn to make choices\, express opinions\, and solve simple problems. These skills build confidence and encourage curiosity. \nAt the same time\, children explore the fundamentals of music. They begin to understand rhythm\, melody\, and dynamics through playful activities. With every song and game\, their imaginations grow. Each activity supports both creativity and cognitive development. Plus\, children have fun while learning essential life skills. \nSocial interaction is also a key part of the experience. Children connect with their peers through shared songs\, partner dances\, and group games. This helps them build communication skills and learn the value of cooperation. The classroom becomes a safe and joyful place to explore their world. \nGrown-ups play an important role too. At the start and end of class\, we invite caregivers to join in. This builds a sense of routine and comfort. Adults also stay nearby for bathroom breaks and support as needed. Your presence matters – it helps children feel secure and supported. \nKindermusik’s curriculum is backed by decades of research. Since 1978\, only accredited early childhood educators have taught our classes. That means your child is learning from highly trained professionals who understand how young children grow. \nEvery month brings a brand-new theme\, so the experience stays fresh and exciting. Along with in-class activities\, families get access to a user-friendly app and digital learning tools. These materials let you continue the fun and learning at home. \nWith Kindermusik\, your child gains more than music skills – they build a foundation for a lifetime of joyful learning. \nSee www.kindermusiknorthshore.com for more information.

SUMMARY:Accelerated Reiki
DESCRIPTION:Reiki Accelerated Class 1 and 2 \nDiscover the Healing Power of Reiki\nReiki is a Japanese energy healing practice that supports physical\, emotional\, and mental balance. It uses gentle touch to channel universal life energy into the body\, helping to promote relaxation and reduce stress. The word Rei means “universal life\,” and Ki means “energy\,” so Reiki literally translates to Universal Life Force Energy. \nThis holistic practice is based on the belief that all living things are sustained by a vital life force. When this energy flows freely\, the body can maintain health and balance. Through Reiki\, practitioners aim to restore this flow\, facilitating healing at physical\, emotional\, and spiritual levels. \nUsing the practitioner’s hands\, Reiki energy is transferred to the recipient\, calming the nervous system and enhancing overall well-being. Many find it to be a deeply soothing and grounding experience. \nWhat You’ll Learn in Our Accelerated Reiki Class\nOur Accelerated Reiki Class is open to everyone and includes both Reiki Level I and Level II certifications. In this course\, participants will: \n\nLearn the core Reiki symbols and their meanings\nReceive clear\, step-by-step instruction from an experienced teacher\nGain hands-on practice with energy work\nEarn a Reiki II certificate upon completion\n\nYou’ll leave the class with the knowledge and confidence to practice Reiki on yourself\, others\, and even animals. \nMeet Your Instructor: Melissa MacTaggart\nMelissa MacTaggart is a certified Reiki Master Teacher who has trained in the Usui method—the oldest form of Reiki. She studied at Zaanti Reiki and Sat Nam Yoga in Chicago\, and founded Blossom and Bee Reiki in 2018. \nMelissa has led Reiki workshops in both Los Angeles and Chicago. Her passion for energy healing began in her teenage years\, sparking a lifelong journey into the mind-body connection. Today\, she considers Reiki her most beloved modality because of its transformative\, radiant power. \nHer mission is to help others discover peace and balance through energy work. SUMMARY:Beginner Graphite Pencil Art
DESCRIPTION:Fundamentals of Pencil Drawing: From Observation to Finished Work\nThis course is a clear and approachable introduction to pencil drawing. It is designed for beginners\, but it also supports artists who want to refresh and strengthen their skills. Pencil drawing is both accessible and expressive. Through this class\, you will gain confidence and learn techniques to create drawings that feel realistic and engaging. \nEach session has two main parts. First\, you will practice drawing what you see. To do this\, we will use observational exercises\, often with simple still life setups. Step by step\, you’ll train your eye to notice shapes\, proportions\, light\, and shadow more accurately. \nNext\, you will move from practice into a finished drawing. In this second part\, you’ll learn how to plan a composition\, layer shading\, and add detail and texture. These steps will help bring your artwork to life. \nAs the course continues\, you will build a strong foundation. You’ll grow more comfortable with line\, form\, value\, and perspective – the essential elements of drawing. \nExperienced Artists Welcome\nIf you already have some experience\, you can join too. You’ll have the option to focus on a personal project or rendering. Along the way\, I’ll give you individual feedback and guidance. This support will help refine your technique and strengthen your creative vision. \nIn short\, this class offers structure\, practice\, and encouragement. Whether you are brand new to drawing or ready to sharpen your skills\, you’ll find a welcoming space to grow as an artist. \nSUPPLIES TO BE PURCHASED BY THE PARTICIPANT: – Can be order thru Blicks Art Supply\, Amazon\, etc.\n9 x 12 Drawing Paper* \n9 x 12 or larger sketchbook \nDrawing pencil set (range 6B-4H) \nKneaded Eraser \nSet of blending stumps \n12” Ruler \n \nPhilip Schorn – P Schorn Studio – Botanical Color Pencil Artist His botanical renderings are not scientific studies of plant specimens. They are artistic interpretations of plants. He notices shapes\, light\, and shadows in the ground around him. He often focuses on a single detail – an individual leaf\, a flower\, or a small fragment of earth. In this way\, he brings those details to life. He has worked with colored pencil for several years and has taught the art for the past three. \nPhilip is currently teaching online from his home since March. He teaches online color pencil classes for other art studios/galleries\, private classes and Facebook demos. He has published two books featuring his art and techniques and has done a number of outdoor shows\, group and individual exhibitions. \nPhilip’s process of making a rendering with the detail that he wants to have requires a significant amount of time. Sometimes he uses other media\, such as ink\, watercolors or pastels.\n Philip is a member of the Color Pencil Society of America\, Grayslake Arts Alliance and the Lake County Art League. His studio is located in Grayslake. \nEmail: phil@nullpschornstudio.com   FB: pschornstudio/

SUMMARY:FAN: Dream School - Finding the College That's Right for You
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Selingo on Rethinking the College Admissions Journey\nJoin us for an evening with Family Action Network and Jeff Selingo\, author of Dream School: Finding the College That’s Right for You. In conversation with Dr. Matthew Montgomery\, superintendent of Lake Forest Schools Districts 67 and 115\, Jeff will share insights from his survey of more than 3\,000 parents. He offers a fresh perspective that helps families rethink the college search. \nFor decades\, college has been a rite of passage and a cornerstone of the American dream. Yet today\, the process feels broken. Even top students face rejection. Families struggle under financial strain. In Dream School\, Selingo shifts the focus. Instead of asking how colleges pick students\, he asks how students can pick colleges more wisely. \nThe landscape has changed. Test-optional policies and grade inflation make admissions less predictable. Getting into an elite school often feels like a lottery. Plan A may succeed\, but more often it doesn’t. Jeff urges families to move past the “Top 25 or bust” mindset. Instead\, he points to hidden-gem schools with high value and rich opportunities. \nUncovering What Really Matters\nHis findings are backed by research and reinforced by thousands of parent voices. Dream School uncovers what truly matters in higher education. Job prospects. Hands-on learning. A strong sense of belonging. To guide students\, Jeff spotlights 75 accessible and affordable colleges that meet these priorities. \nThe book is organized into three clear sections. First\, it explains why an elite degree often matters less than people assume. Second\, it shows why families increasingly value affordability and opportunity over prestige. Third\, it teaches how to ensure that a degree delivers real returns. \nThis conversation will challenge assumptions and open doors. Join us to discover how to find the college that’s right for you. \n  \n \nJeff Selingo has written about colleges and universities for more than two and a half decades and\nis a New York Times bestselling author of three books. His latest book\, Who Gets In & Why: A\nYear Inside College Admissions\, takes readers inside the admissions offices of three selective\nuniversities and was named among the 100 Notable Books of the year by the New York Times.\nHis next book\, Dream School: Finding The College That’s Right For You\, is based on two-plus\nyears of research and an original survey of 3\,500 parents.\nA regular contributor to The Atlantic\, New York Times\, and Wall Street Journal\, Jeff is a special\nadvisor to the president and professor of practice at Arizona State University. He also writes a bi-\nweekly newsletter on all things higher ed called Next and co-hosts the podcast\, Future U. He\nlives near Washington\, DC with his family. \n\nDr. Matthew L. Montgomery serves as Superintendent of Lake Forest Community High School District 115 and Lake Forest Elementary School District 67\, overseeing the effective operation\, educational programs\, and fiscal management of both districts. His career began as a high school science teacher in Canfield\, Ohio\, followed by leadership roles as principal at Waterloo Middle and High Schools\, and later Superintendent of Waterloo Local School District. He then led Revere Local School District in Bath\, Ohio\, where he implemented a five-year strategic plan\, advanced community engagement\, managed $70 million in capital improvements\, and elevated district performance. Since joining the Lake Forest districts in 2021\, Dr. Montgomery has guided the development of the Portrait of a Learner\, new strategic plans\, and a successful $105.7 million referendum. Nationally\, he serves as Lead Superintendent for Cohort and Partner Connections with AASA and Co-Chair of the AASA STEM Leadership Consortium. He also contributes to several professional organizations and serves on the Superintendent Advisory Board for JASON Learning. SUMMARY:After School Art Club with Lezlie
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a budding artist in the family? Give their creativity room to grow in this engaging after-school art class designed specifically for students in Grades 1–4! \nEach class is thoughtfully structured to balance artistic freedom with meaningful learning. We begin with a free-draw session\, allowing students time to warm up\, express themselves\, and get their creative energy flowing. From there\, we dive into the world of art history by introducing an “Artist of the Day”—a renowned or influential figure whose work provides the inspiration for that day’s project. \nStudents will explore various artistic movements\, mediums\, and styles from around the world\, helping them gain a broader understanding of art and its cultural significance. With guidance and encouragement\, they’ll create their own artwork inspired by the featured artist\, putting their personal spin on classic techniques while developing new skills and confidence. \nThe class wraps up with group clean-up\, an age-appropriate art discussion that encourages observation and expression\, and a fun “draw-a-long” activity to reinforce what they’ve learned in a playful and supportive way. \nMore than just an art class\, this is a space where young artists can explore\, reflect\, and connect with the wider world through creativity. It’s a perfect opportunity for self-expression\, experimentation\, and cultivating a lifelong appreciation for the arts and global perspectives.

SUMMARY:Teen Draw & Paint with Joalida Smit
DESCRIPTION:Draw & Paint with Joalida\nPlease Note DATES –  \n\nWednesday\, November 5\nWednesday\, November 12\nTuesday\, November 18\nTuesday\, November 25\n\nCome hang out in a space where creativity comes alive. Artist and educator Joalida Smit invites teens to join her ongoing art class at the Gorton Center. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, Joalida’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, Joalida gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Because of this\, every class feels fresh and exciting. \nAnd here’s the best part: the goal isn’t to finish identical projects. Instead\, the focus is on exploration\, creativity\, and storytelling. Students learn how to express themselves\, share their ideas\, and bring imagination to life. As a result\, they walk away with more than just artwork. They leave with stronger skills\, bigger confidence\, and a deeper connection to their creativity. \nFinally\, this class gives teens a safe\, supportive space to take risks\, try new things\, and grow as artists. Step by step\, they discover the joy of creating something that’s truly their own. \nSo\, why not join Joalida in the studio? It’s a place where individuality is celebrated\, creativity flows\, and every teen has a chance to shine. \nAll materials are provided\, so students can fully immerse themselves in the process without the need to bring supplies. Ages: 11 – 17 \nSkill Level: Intermediate to advanced – Prior art experience and a sincere interest in art are required. \nNote: This is an art development class\, not a recreational after-school club. Students are expected to take their art practice seriously and to respect the shared studio space. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

AI can boost productivity\, but it can also raise new ethical and social questions. \nDiscussing the Ethical Implications\nThroughout the session\, you will be invited to share your own perspectives. What excites you most about this technology? What concerns do you have? Together\, we will speculate on how AI could reshape not only jobs but also communities\, education\, and culture. \nBy the end of this workshop\, you will walk away with a clearer understanding of today’s AI landscape. You will also gain insight into the questions that experts\, workers\, and everyday users are asking right now. Most importantly\, you will feel prepared to think critically about how AI may influence your own future. \nThis seminar is produced by Mike Gershbein with VSP Chicago:\nMichael Gershbein\, Founder \nWe are your Chicagoland group and in-home tech tutors! \nhttp://www.VSPChicago.com \n847.204.2916 \nFacebook  X  LinkedIn

SUMMARY:F1 The Movie
DESCRIPTION:Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was Formula 1’s brightest star in the 1990s. A crash on the track nearly ended his career and left him drifting for decades. Now\, thirty years later\, he races from job to job\, chasing speed but never glory. \nThat changes when his old teammate\, Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem)\, comes calling. Ruben owns a failing Formula 1 team on the brink of collapse. He needs Sonny to make a comeback – one last shot to save the team and prove he can still be the best. \nSonny will race alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris)\, a rookie with raw talent and a drive to dominate. But Formula 1 is unforgiving. Teammates become rivals. The past never stays buried. And redemption\, like victory\, is something no driver wins alone. \nF1® The Movie also stars Damson Idris\, Kerry Condon\, Tobias Menzies\, Kim Bodnia\, and Javier Bardem. Shot during real Grand Prix weekends\, the film puts audiences inside the fight against the sport’s toughest titans. \nDirected by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger. Executive produced by Daniel Lupi. With Claudio Miranda as director of photography\, production design by Mark Tildesley and Ben Munro\, editing by Stephen Mirrione\, costumes by Julian Day\, casting by Lucy Bevan\, and music by Hans Zimmer. \n“Grab your crew” and experience the exhilaration! \nDirector: Joseph Kosinski\nWriters: Ehren Kruger\, Joseph Kosinski\nStars: Brad Pitt\, Damson Idris\, Javier Bardem \nWe are especially grateful to the Sheffield Foundation for sponsoring this screening.
