SUMMARY:Tai Chi
DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, it is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s class. \nHealth Benefits \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found it is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nIt is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

SUMMARY:Take Your Painting to the Next Level
DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your painting to the next level?\nThis class is ideal for artists who already have some experience painting in Oil\, Acrylic\, Gouache\, or Pastel and are ready to grow their skills further. If you’ve been wanting to turn a photo into a painting or have started a piece but feel unsure about how to move forward\, this is the perfect opportunity to get expert guidance and renewed inspiration. \nEach student brings in either a reference photo or an unfinished painting to work on during class. From there\, artist and instructor Michael Latala provides hands-on\, individualized instruction to help you make confident artistic decisions. First\, he’ll show you how to evaluate your photo reference—guiding you in choosing what elements to include and what to leave out. Then\, through clear demonstrations\, he’ll help you resolve common issues like washed-out highlights or areas that have gone too dark to read. \nThroughout the class\, Michael gives each student personal attention. If you’d prefer to keep your canvas untouched\, he’s happy to demonstrate his suggestions digitally using Procreate on his iPad Pro. This digital approach allows you to visualize changes before applying them\, which can be especially helpful when exploring different color choices or compositional edits. \nImportantly\, this class is all about progress at your own pace. There’s no pressure to finish quickly. Instead\, you’re encouraged to slow down\, focus on what you’re learning\, and enjoy the process. With consistent support and practice\, you’ll discover how to turn your ideas into beautiful\, well-executed paintings—just the way you imagined them. \nThis series runs on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month: \n\nMay 14 & 28\nJune 11 & 25\nJuly 9 & 23\nAugust 13 & 27

SUMMARY:CHURN: THE TENSION THAT DIVIDES US AND HOW TO OVERCOME IT
DESCRIPTION:Nearly two decades after Whistling Vivaldi\, legendary social psychologist Claude M. Steele\, Ph.D. (FAN ’14)\, returns with Churn: The Tension That Divides Us and How to Overcome It\, an equally ambitious work examining the mental agitation and physical stress we experience in diverse settings\, and the surprising role trust-building plays in reducing it across identity divides. \nOpening with a striking vignette of a parent-teacher conference between a well-meaning white teacher and the concerned Black parents of a seventh grader\, the book demonstrates how churn threatens the trust essential to teaching and mentoring the young. Drawing on decades of psychological research\, Churn is rich with examples: a young woman entering a boardroom as one of only a few women; a white male feeling conspicuous during diversity training; a Chinese grandmother shopping where anti-Asian violence has occurred; and lessons from remarkable student outcomes at Georgia State University. \nToo often\, we navigate the tensions of diversity by pretending they don’t exist\, avoiding connection across what can seem like wide chasms of difference. Steele charts a different path\, one rooted in seeing the full humanity in human difference. He offers concrete practices\, “a game played on the ground\,” for building trust across all kinds of divides: between individuals\, in classrooms\, boardrooms\, and entire institutions. \nCarefully intertwining research with anecdotes drawn from Steele’s own biracial background\, Churn is essential reading for anyone committed to fostering community. Filled with hard-won hope\, Steele’s summa work teaches us how to work through the churn suffusing our lives. \nSteele will be in conversation with Marcus Campbell\, Ed.D.\, superintendent of Evanston Township High School District 202. Dr. Campbell was previously the Assistant Superintendent/Principal at ETHS\, responsible for providing leadership in the development of district strategy and organizational change\, including effective instruction practices\, impactful diversity and equity initiatives\, and responsive programs and services. \nBook Giveaway: FAN is giving away copies of Churn to attendees\, while supplies last. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. It will be recorded but not live streamed and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:INSIDE THE BOX: HOW CONSTRAINTS MAKE US BETTER
DESCRIPTION:We live in a world that gives us seemingly infinite choices and prizes freedom above all else. We have an unprecedented number of options regarding what to do\, who to be\, and how to spend our time. All that choice is wonderful; it is also overwhelming. The irony is that total freedom can be paralyzing\, and unlimited resources don’t necessarily lead to the biggest breakthroughs. In fact\, overvaluing complete freedom can be disastrous for everything from starting a company to harnessing creativity to finding personal satisfaction. \nIn his new book\, Inside the Box: How Constraints Make Us Better\, bestselling author David Epstein (FAN ’16\, ’20) argues that all of us—individuals\, businesses\, institutions\, even societies—can benefit from narrowing our options. He dives into the science and practice of constraints\, exploring exactly when and how guardrails can be beneficial\, whether we’re working with limited resources or using self-imposed boundaries to tap unexpected wells of focus and innovation. \nOriginal\, galvanizing\, and deeply researched\, Inside the Box tells absorbing stories of people and organizations that embraced constraints to transform themselves\, and the world—as well as a few that struggled from a lack of limits. Epstein reveals how boundaries create breakthroughs\, and how setting the right constraints can help you become the most creative\, productive\, and satisfied version of yourself. \nEpstein will be in conversation with Megan Twohey\, an investigative reporter at The New York Times who seeks to expose hidden truths and hold powerful individuals and institutions to account. She is the co-author\, with Jodi Kantor (FAN ’26)\, of She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story that Helped Ignite a Movement\, which takes readers behind the scenes of the Harvey Weinstein investigation and was adapted into a film. Twohey and Kantor shared a Pulitzer Prize for public service for their reporting. \nBoth featured guests are ETHS alums: Epstein is ‘98\, and Twohey is ‘94. \nBook Giveaway: FAN is giving away copies of Inside the Box to attendees\, while supplies last. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. It will be recorded but not live streamed and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Salsarobics
DESCRIPTION:Get Ready to Move with SALSArobics!\nJoin Esther Gutierrez Sloan every Friday for a dynamic workout that blends fun\, rhythm\, and full-body movement. This class isn’t just about exercise – it’s about joy\, discovery\, and the thrill of dance! \nThroughout the session\, participants choose their intensity level – low\, moderate\, or high – while moving to irresistible Latin\, Caribbean\, Spanish\, and African beats. Options for both low-impact and high-impact movements allow everyone to customize their experience. \nEach class delivers an energizing workout that averages 4\,000 to 4\,200 steps\, with varying degrees of intensity. Esther integrates the Total Body Training (TBT) Systems Methodology to support proper posture and promote muscle conditioning. She also incorporates Peripheral Heart Action (PHA) Training\, offering an optional challenge that builds aerobic strength based on individual pace and rhythm. \nTo build coordination and balance\, the class includes inline motion drills. Participants move across the room using steps that change direction – laterally\, diagonally\, forward\, and backward – adding functional movement to the workout. \nThe session concludes with Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching to enhance flexibility and recovery. \nColombian-born Esther Gutierrez Sloan created SALSArobics in 1989 to fuse authentic Latin rhythms with aerobic exercise. She has performed on national and local television in Illinois\, California\, Florida\, and New York. In addition to leading classes\, she has presented SALSArobics at fitness conventions\, schools\, health clubs\, ethnic festivals\, and international events. \nIn recognition of her groundbreaking work\, Esther was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2010.

SUMMARY:AMERICA\, U.S.A.: HOW RACE SHADOWS THE NATION'S ANNIVERSARIES
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated public intellectual Eddie S. Glaude\, Jr.\, Ph.D. (FAN ’20\, ’24)\, presents a groundbreaking analysis of the vicious cycles of American history and the country’s enduring refusal to face its true nature\, especially at the moments when national anniversaries steer us back toward the mythology meant to disguise the truth. \nAmerica\, U.S.A.: How Race Shadows the Nation’s Anniversaries\, deliberately formulated and beautifully written\, details a heart-wrenching exploration of America’s legacy. It is a magnificently complex combination of lessons and voices\, from W.E.B. DuBois and John Dos Passos to Herman Melville and Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, that\, together\, paint a sprawling and honest tableau of the United States\, its complicated past\, and ever more tenuous future. Glaude’s is a powerful voice of conscience in our tumultuous world. He pulls no punches\, calling on us to interrogate our conceptions of innocence and freedom and the stories we tell ourselves about our past and present. \nCentered around the major celebrations of America’s milestone birthdays across 250 years of history\, the book offers a riveting look at the battles over who has a stake in writing the American story. Devastatingly candid\, profoundly moving\, and deeply reflective\, America\, U.S.A. is a shining meditation on how we must reckon with a grim past to strive for the better angels of our future. \nGlaude is the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor at Princeton University and author of New York Times bestselling Begin Again and We Are the Leaders We Have Been Looking For. He frequently appears in the media\, as a columnist for TIME Magazine and as an MSNBC contributor on programs like Morning Joe and Deadline White House with Nicolle Wallace. He also regularly appears on Meet the Press on Sundays. \nHe will be in conversation with Imani Perry\, JD\, Ph.D.\, the Henry A. Morss\, Jr. and Elisabeth W. Morss Professor of Studies of Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality and of African and African American Studies at Harvard University and the Carol K. Pforzheimer Professor at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute. Perry is the author of nine books\, including the New York Times bestseller South to America which received the 2022 National Book Award for Nonfiction. She is a 2023 recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim and Pew Foundations. \nBook Giveaway: FAN is giving away copies of America\, U.S.A. to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.
