SUMMARY:Fareed Haque and Goran Ivanovic on Guitar
DESCRIPTION:They’re back to open Season 4 of Rendezvous Arts with their amazing energy\, 1000s of notes\, and pure musical joy that only these two guitarists can bring! They are always a Rendezvous Arts Favorite and have sold out in the past – come and you’ll see why! \nInspired by the rhythms and melodies of flamenco\, jazz\, classical\, rock\, and the Balkan region\, this performance features the unrivaled guitar artistry of two of the finest players of their respective generations. Their music is carefully balanced between blazing virtuosity and sheer beauty. Together\, Goran Ivanovic and Fareed Haque recorded three CDs – Macedonian Blues\, 7 Boats\, and IndoBalkan – to great critical acclaim\, even getting the nod as the top best acoustic guitar albums in 2004 from Acoustic Guitar magazine. \nFriday night concert timeline\n7 – 8:15 PM concert (no intermission)\n8:15 – 8:45 PM conversation with artists\nConcessions for sale\, including beer & wine \n \n \nLiquid Mosiac Art by Inna and Alex Deriy \n\n\nInna is originally from the South Western part of  Siberia. She was born in a family of geologists and from the first days of her life was surrounded by the romanticism of scientific expeditions and the beauty of Siberian nature. Inna graduated from one of the most prestigious art schools of the region in the mid 90’s and tried herself in graphic design and jewelry making\,  participating in multiple projects and exhibitions.  In 2004 Inna relocated to the USA and married Alex Deriy\, and engineer by day and artist and musician by night. \nMoving away from home and traditional oil and pastels Inna joined her creative forces with her husband Alex. They started developing a new technique of painting with pigmented polymers and tried applying it to stone\, glass\, canvas and wood.  Stained glass look of her newly developed works slightly resembles warm and earthy collages made of natural stones that Inna’s parents used to bring back from their geological expeditions. Natural beauty of minerals has always been the couple’s main inspiration. \nThis is part of Rendezvous Arts Series \n\n \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Tai Chi With Ken Ning
DESCRIPTION:Sign up for Gorton’s Tai Chi class and join Ken Ning each Saturday to learn and practice Tai Chi. Ken’s Tai Chi class is open to both beginners and experienced practitioners. \nTai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, Tai Chi is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits of Tai Chi below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s Tai Chi class. \nHealth Benefits of Tai Chi \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found Tai Chi is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s Tai Chi class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nTai Chi is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

While Fuller has performed all over the world at numerous famous music venues\, this concert will also be very special for another reason: Lake Forest is now Tom’s new hometown. \nPop-rocker Fuller’s career accomplishments include the Billboard charting single “Doin’ Nothin’” in 2019 followed by his acclaimed Waterfall album that contained two more Billboard-charting hit singles in 2020 – “Forever I’m Yours” and the title track “Waterfall.” \nOverall\, Tom Fuller’s songs embrace his very personal lyrics that engage\, uplift and resonate with passion\, truth and a lot of heart.  His outstanding Rock/Pop/AC music has broad universal appeal\, with rabid fanbases spread throughout the United States\, United Kingdom and Europe.  Tom has recorded in the past with members of Paul McCartney’s band\, Brian Ray and Abe Laboriel\, Jr.\, plus with a Grammy-award-winning producer on various earlier projects. \nWith his rockin’ five-piece band\, Tom Fuller has performed all over the world at iconic music venues\, such as the Paradiso in Amsterdam\, Gruenspan in Hamburg\, Cavern Club in Liverpool\, O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London\, La Maroquinerie in Paris\, plus the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville\, various House of Blues and other classic U.S. musical venues in countless cities.  Fuller and his bandmates have also performed at legendary festivals including Milwaukee’s Summerfest numerous times.  Impressively\, Tom and his band have toured with Little Feat\, Trampled by Turtles\, Tesla and others\, plus played gigs with other chart-topping bands and incredible artists including Soul Asylum\, Guess Who\, Blues Traveler\, Rusted Root\, Robin Trower\, and UFO\, among many others.  Tom Fuller often says\, “Music is my passion and destiny.” \nAfter a break during the COVID pandemic\, Tom’s musical and life journey continues\, and he is excited to exclaim\, “The man is back in action and I’m more than ready to share my new/old love songs and classic rockin’ tunes with you all!!  I hope to see you at the Gorton Center!!” \nFor more information on Tom Fuller\, please visit his website at www.tomfuller.rocks \n  \n

SUMMARY:Do Not Submit-Lake Forest
DESCRIPTION:Do Not Submit-Lake Forest is a monthly storytelling open mic in an enthusiastic\, supportive environment free from pressure\, judgment\, or scoring. No experience is necessary to participate. All are welcome to speak or simply listen. Arrive at 7:15 to sign up for a spot\, and when your name is called\, participants will have up to 7 minutes to tell/read/tap dance any personal story/fiction/essay they’d like. All language and content is acceptable except for hate speech. \n\nDNS-LF takes place in Suite 215 – a cozy room on the second floor of Gorton Center.\nBeer\, wine and nonalcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.\nHosted by Elizabeth Brown\, Mary Lou Gilliam\, and Sarita Miller\n\nAbout Your Hosts: \nAs a pathologist\, Elizabeth Brown spent hundreds of hours hunched over either a microscope or a dead body. She then worked as a consultant to the medical device industry writing technical reports\, all dry as dust and utterly humorous.  Original thoughts were few\, as all statements had to be referenced. Spreading her wings to creative non-fiction has been a liberating joy. Elizabeth has performed at storytelling events in Highwood\, Arlington Heights\, Evanston and Chicago\, but is delighted to be hosting an open mic in her home town of Lake Forest. \n  \nMary Lou Gilliam is retired from two careers: English teaching and educational publishing. She has been on the stage since she was 10 doing dramatic readings\, singing\, or some combination thereof. An English major with a theater minor\, she found that teaching extended the performance world when she began writing first person narratives to model both writing and speaking for her students. Because she was born and raised in a small Swedish farm town in western Illinois\, think Garrison Keillor for thematic content. About ten years ago\, while considering retirement\, she took her stories on the road\, so to speak\, by joining Short Story Theatre in the Northshore suburbs. She has also performed at Story Lab Chicago\, Truth Be Told\, and Backyard Stories. Having lived quite a few decades by now\, her narratives include both the travails and thrills of a long (and possibly over-examined) life. She keeps busy with volunteer work\, private tutoring\, international travel\, and as much time with her four grandchildren as she can. \nSarita Miller is a retired English/language arts teacher and the mother of two fine adults\, a lovely daughter-in-law\, and one adorable pup. Presently\, Sarita tutors reading\, writing\, and grammar\, something she greatly enjoys. During her days as a middle school teacher\, Sarita was known for telling stories during lessons. Although her students thought they were pulling one over on her and getting her “off task” when they asked for a story\, she explains that doing so was her plan from the beginning. To Sarita\, life is simply stories. She has shared several of hers with audiences at Short Story Theater in Highland Park and Story Lab in Chicago.

SUMMARY:FAN IN-PERSON EVENT: Michelle Icard
DESCRIPTION:Speaker\, author and educator Michelle Icard discusses her book Eight Setbacks That Can Make a Child a Success with Chicago-based writer Heidi Stevens.\n \nOpen Seating – No pre-registration required \nEvery child messes up\, sometimes in ways that seem sure to wreck their futures: a bad report card\, poor sportsmanship\, and underaged drinking. These are tough moments for parent and child alike\, often complicated by the fear that the misstep is also an indictment of our parenting. But what each of these “fails” has in common for our kids is the precious silver lining of a chance for character building and developing more grit—if we help them process their mistakes well. \nAn invaluable playbook for anxious parents everywhere\, Eight Setbacks That Can Make a Child a Success by parenting expert Michelle Icard (FAN ’22)\, offers specific and unexpected advice about what to say\, what not to say\, and what to do to help children in eight categories of tense situations. Distilled from Icard’s decades of experience working with tweens\, teenagers\, and families\, she underscores that there is always a chance for a child to gain new and stronger decision-making skills\, and for the parent-child relationship to strengthen. \nIcard is the author of Fourteen Talks by Age Fourteen (2021) and Middle School Makeover (2014). She has a degree in education and has worked with parents\, children\, and teachers for more than 20 years. A writer for the Today show parenting team\, NBC News Learn\, CNN Science and Wellness\, and the Washington Post\, Icard’s work has also been featured in the Chicago Tribune\, Christian Science Monitor\, Redbook\, Time\, and People. \nIcard will be in conversation with Heidi Stevens\, Director of External Affairs for the University of Chicago’s TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health. Prior to joining TMW\, Stevens worked at the Chicago Tribune for 23 years\, where she wrote a daily column called “Balancing Act.” She maintains a weekly nationally syndicated column. Stevens also serves as a FAN board member. \nThis event is suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded but not live-streamed and will be available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. \nAdolescence | Advice | Anxiety | Behavior | Character | Connection | Empathy | Family | Love | Mental Health | Motivation | Parenting | Relationships | Well Being | Youth \nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY of Eight Setbacks at the event\, while supplies last. Book sale and signing\, too. Presented by The Book Stall Winnetka. \nOpen Seating – No pre-registration required
