SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts 2022-2023 True Colors Baroque
DESCRIPTION:7:00-8:15 PM concert (no intermission)\n8:15-8:45 PM conversation with artists\nConcessions for sale\, including beer & wine\nTrue Colors Baroque featuring recorder player Laura Ostjerna Klehr\nDon Widmer\, paper artist \n\nRendezvous Arts is thrilled for the return of True Colors Baroque period instrument ensemble. Lead by violinist and Rendezvous board member Wendy Benner\, the ensemble’s old-fashioned gut strings evoke the true colors of the baroque era\, while freshly fashioned gutsy performances express the true colors of each musician\, individually and collectively. This season True Colors will be joined by recorder player Laura Ostjerna Klehr. Members of True Colors Baroque have performed throughout Europe\, Canada\, and the U.S. in a wide array of ensembles\, ranging from the Chicago Symphony to Haymarket Opera Company to Leipzig Baroque Orchestra. Each True Colors Baroque concert weaves together a unique blend of vivid melodies\, toe-tapping dance rhythms\, and richly artistic personalities brought to life through music interspersed with brief\, eye-opening conversations about who they are and what they love. \n                                                                                                                               \nWendy Benner\, Violin                                                                           David Schrader\, Harpsichord                                      \n\n \n\n \n                                                          \n                                                                           Vannia Phillip\, Viola\n\n                                                                Lisette Kielson\, Recorder\n\n\n\nDon Widmer Paper Artist  Don Widmer is a book and paper artist whose work incorporates papermaking and artist bookbinding.  His papermaking utilizes detailed pulp painting with numerous layers of stenciled pulp.  His artist books feature structures that explore movement and light.  Don has exhibited throughout the Midwest\, most recently at A+C Architects Studio\, the Paper Discovery Center\, Bridgeport Art Center\, Tall Grass Art Gallery\, Morgan Conservatory\, Gallery Studio Oh!\, and Kalamazoo Book Arts Center.  He has received several best of show awards and his work is represented in university\, museum and library collections. Most recently\, the Smithsonian purchased his artist book Darkness and Light\, inspired by Etty Hillesum.   \n\n \n Rendezvous Arts is a chamber music and visual arts series started by several of the musicians of the Lake Forest Symphony. When the orchestra sadly folded\, they wanted to find a way to continue to play for the friends that they had made from the Symphony’s audience – and so the plan to continue the orchestra’s Salon Series chamber music program was born.\n

SUMMARY:FAN- Selfless: The Social Creation of “You”
DESCRIPTION:There’s nothing we spend more time with\, but understand less\, than ourselves. You’ve been with yourself every waking moment of your life. But who—or\, rather\, what—are you? In Selfless: The Social Creation of “You\,” social psychologist and Stanford University professor Brian Lowery\, Ph.D. argues for the radical idea that the “self” as we know it—that “voice in your head”—is a social construct\, created in our relationships and social interactions. We are unique because our individual pattern of relationships is unique. We change because our relationships change. Your self isn’t just you\, it’s all around you. \nProf. Lowery uses this research-driven perspective of selfhood to explore questions of inequity\, race\, gender\, politics\, and power structures\, transforming our perceptions of how the world is and how it could be. His theory offers insight into how powerful people manage their environment in sophisticated\, often unconscious\, ways to maintain the status quo; explains our competing drives for deep social connection and personal freedom; and answers profound\, personal questions such as: Why has my sense of self evolved over time? Why do I sometimes stop short of changes that I want to make in life? \nIn Selfless\, Prof. Lowery persuasively breaks down common assumptions and beliefs; his insights are humbling. Despite what many may think\, we aren’t islands unto ourselves; we are the creation of the many hands that touch us. We don’t just exist in communities\, we are created and shaped by them. Our highs and lows are not only our own but belong to others as well. By recognizing that we are products of relationships—from fleeting transactions to deep associations—we shatter the myth of individualism and free ourselves to make our lives and the world accordingly. \nProf. Lowery is the Walter Kenneth Kilpatrick Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business\, and the co-director of Stanford’s new Institute on Race. He also hosts the podcast Know What You See. He will be in conversation with Marcus Campbell\, Ed.D.\, Superintendent of Evanston Township High School D202. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. The event will be recorded but not live streamed. The video will be available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. \nNO REGISTRATION REQUIRED \nThis event is presented by Family Action Network (FAN). Gorton Center is proud to partner with FAN as a sponsor of this event to bring this programming to our patrons.

SUMMARY:FAN- Above Ground: A Conversation with Clint Smith
DESCRIPTION:BONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY! FAN is giving away copies of Above Ground to guests randomly selected from the Zoom attendance report. All details on the webinar registration page. \nClint Smith\, Ph.D.’s vibrant and compelling new poetry collection\, the New York Times bestseller Above Ground\, traverses the vast emotional terrain of fatherhood and explores how becoming a parent has recalibrated his sense of the world. There are poems that interrogate the ways our lives are shaped by both personal lineages and historical institutions. There are poems that revel in the wonder of discovering the world anew through the eyes of your children\, as they discover it for the first time. There are poems that meditate on what it means to raise a family in a world filled with constant social and political tumult. Above Ground wrestles with how we hold wonder and despair in the same hands\, how we carry intimate moments of joy and a collective sense of mourning in the same body. \nSmith is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning With the History of Slavery Across America\, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction\, the Hillman Prize for Book Journalism\, the Stowe Prize\, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize\, and selected by the New York Times as one of the 10 Best Books of 2021. He is a staff writer at The Atlantic. \nSmith’s essays\, poems\, and scholarly writing have been published in The New Yorker\, The New York Times Magazine\, The New Republic\, Poetry Magazine\, The Paris Review\, the Harvard Educational Review\, and elsewhere. He is a former National Poetry Slam champion and a recipient of the Jerome J. Shestack Prize from the American Poetry Review. \nPreviously\, Smith taught high school English in Prince George’s County\, Maryland where he was named the Christine D. Sarbanes Teacher of the Year by the Maryland Humanities Council. He is the host of the YouTube series Crash Course Black American History. He received his B.A. in English from Davidson College and his Ph.D. in Education from Harvard University. \nSmith will be in conversation with Marcus Campbell\, Ed.D.\, Superintendent of Evanston Township High school D202. Dr. Campbell has 22 years of experience at ETHS\, starting as an English teacher\, and has played a central role in the district’s equity transformation programs and initiatives. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. SUMMARY:Traditional African Hand Drumming with Helen Bond
DESCRIPTION:Learn traditional hand drumming from Guinea\, West Africa!\nThis is a SINGLE class on Monday\, May 1\, 6:00pm – 7:30pm\n \nHand drumming has a rich history in Guinea\, West Africa\, dating back to the 13th century. The drum was a central part of everyday life and was used for communication\, religious ceremonies\, and entertainment. \nHelen Bond will share the great joy of traditional hand drumming! Helen has been traveling to Guinea for the past 21 years to study their music and culture. In this class\, you will learn basic rhythms on dunun drums and the djembe accompaniment parts. You will also learn the origins of each rhythm\, receive expert instruction on all instruments in the traditional djembe orchestra and deepen your understanding of the place of music\, dance\, and song in West African life. \nHelen is able to work simultaneously with students of all levels – from beginner to professional. All levels are welcome! Drums will be provided should you not have one. No experience is needed. \n \nDunun drums\, also known as djun-djun drums or talking drums\, are a family of West African bass drums that are played with sticks. They are commonly used in the traditional music of the Malinke people of Mali\, Guinea\, and other parts of West Africa. Dunun drums consist of three to five cylindrical drums of different sizes\, each with a different pitch\, and are typically played in ensembles with other percussion instruments such as the djembe and the balafon. They are often used to provide the bassline in West African music and are known for their deep\, resonant sound. Dunun drums are an important part of the cultural heritage of West Africa and are widely used in both traditional and contemporary music. \nThe djembe\, a rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands\, is thought to have originated from the Mandinka people in Guinea. The djembe was traditionally played by men and was used to accompany traditional dances and songs. The drum was also used as a tool for communication\, with different rhythms representing different messages. \nToday\, Guinean hand drumming remains popular both within Guinea and around the world. Many musicians and enthusiasts travel to Guinea to study with master drummers and to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Guinean hand drumming.
