SUMMARY:THE RITUAL EFFECT: FROM HABIT TO RITUAL\, HARNESS THE SURPRISING POWERS OF EVERYDAY ACTIONS
DESCRIPTION:Our lives are filled with repetitive tasks meant to keep us on track—what we come to know as habits. Over time\, these routines (like brushing your teeth or putting on your right sock first) tend to be performed automatically. But when we’re more mindful about these actions—when we focus on the precise way they are performed—they can instead become rituals. Shifting from a “habitual” mindset to a “ritual” mindset can convert ordinary acts from black and white to Technicolor. \nThink about the way you savor a certain beverage\, the care you take with a particular outfit that gets worn only on special occasions\, the unique way that your family gathers around the table during holidays\, or the secret language you enjoy with your significant other. To some\, these behaviors may seem quirky\, but because rituals matter so deeply to us on a personal level\, they give our lives purpose and meaning. For his new book\, The Ritual Effect: From Habit to Ritual\, Harness the Surprising Power of Everyday Actions Michael Norton\, Ph.D. (FAN ’16)\, the Harold M. Brierley Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School\, draws on a decade of original research to show that rituals play a role in healing communities experiencing a great loss\, marking life’s major transitions\, driving a stadium of sports fans to ecstasy\, and helping us rise to challenges and realize opportunities. \nNorton’s research focuses on behavioral economics and well-being\, with particular attention given to happiness and spending\, income inequality\, and the IKEA effect. He is the co-author of Happy Money: The Science of Happier Spending\, and his “How to Buy Happiness” TED Talk has been viewed over 4 million times. \nNorton will be in conversation with award-winning social psychologist Sam Sommers\, Ph.D.\, Professor and Chair in the Department of Psychology and director of the Racial Equity and Diversity Lab at Tufts University. \nBONUS AFTER-HOURS EVENT\, with BOGO: Attendees who purchase a copy of The Ritual Effect from FAN’s partner bookseller The Book Stall are invited to attend an AFTER-HOURS event hosted by Norton and Sommers that will start immediately after the webinar. AND: FAN will gift a second copy of the book to After-Hours guests! Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Book Talk with Judge David Tatel about Memoir "Vision"
DESCRIPTION:“Vision” is memoir by retired Judge David Tatal\, a retired Judge\, about becoming blind\, his legal and judicial careers as well as the newest family addition\, Vixen\, his guide dog.\nThe “moving\, thoughtful\, and inspiring memoir” by Bryan Stevenson\, author of Just Mercy\, about one of America’s most accomplished public servants and legal thinkers—who spent years denying and working around his blindness\, before finally embracing it as an essential part of his identity. \nDavid Tatel has served nearly 30 years on America’s second highest court\, the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit\, where many of our most crucial cases are resolved—or teed up for the Supreme Court. He has championed equal justice for his entire adult life; decided landmark environmental and voting cases; and embodied the ideal of what a great judge should be. Yet he has been blind for the past 50 of his 80-plus years.\nInitially\, he depended upon aides to read texts to him\, and more recently\, a suite of hi-tech solutions has allowed him to listen to reams of documents at high speeds. At first\, he tried to hide his deteriorating vision\, and for years\, he denied that it had any impact on his career. Only recently\, partly thanks to his first-ever guide dog\, Vixen\, has he come to fully accept his blindness and the role it’s played in his personal and professional lives. His story of fighting for justice over many decades\, with and without eyesight\, is an inspiration to us all. \n“This memoir of a judge of the country’s second highest court\, who has been without sight for decades\, goes down like a cool drink on a hot day.” —Scott Turow\, #1 bestselling author of Suspect\n“Deeply moving and packed with wisdom.” —Frank Bruni\, New York Times \nCLICK TO REGISTER

In connection with carousel art\, Lisa pursues research in early Celtic design and mythology on site in the upper isles of Scotland. Many early Celtic and pre-Christian designs are reproduced on carousels and carousel animals. Her interest in ancient and contemporary mythology has led her to research mountain storytelling\, initiating more travel and recent storytelling\, herself. Lisa has been telling Highland Park\, Lake Forest\, and several venues in Chicago. For fun\, Lisa also restores antique wood toys and sports cars\, which she drives with vigor and nostalgia.

He was already writing songs by the time he got to Kentucky at age eighteen. There\, the bluegrass picking’ and old-time dances turned him on to the power and joy of traditional folk music. He added a mandolin\, fiddle and banjo to his arsenal and got a job slapping bass with the college bluegrass band. After graduating\, he spent a year traveling around the world on a Watson Fellowship\, playing music in pubs and living rooms. In 2007 Jonas landed in Chicago\, started the Barehand Jug band\, the Sleepy Lou Old-Time duo and began teaching at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Since then\, he has released multiple studio albums under his own name and with the folk supergroup “The Majority.” Jonas now splits his time between performing and teaching classes on traditional music at both the Old Town School of Folk Music and Chicago Public Schools. \nAnna Jacobson is a musician of diverse talents\, from orchestral horn player to an old-time fiddler. She sings\, trumpets\, and fiddles with award-winning folk/Americana songwriter Jonas Friddle\, and teaches fiddle and brass classes at the Old Town School of Folk Music. A dedicated chamber musician\, she is a founding member of V3NTO Brass Trio and also plays with the Alloy Horn Quartet. On the horn\, Anna has played with the Chicago Symphony\, Civic Orchestra of Chicago\, South Bend Symphony\, Illinois Symphony\, Dubuque Symphony\, and many others across the Midwest.   \nBassist Andrew Wilkins has spent roughly equal parts of his life in St Louis\, Dallas\, and Chicago\, where he currently resides. Throughout his musical journey\, studying jazz and classical music at the University of North Texas and playing in a variety of jazz\, rock\, blues and Americana bands\, Andrew has always stayed close to improvised music. Noteworthy artists he has performed with include Jonas Friddle\, Frank Catalano\, Bill Longhorse\, and Laura Doherty. Andrew continues his work as a music educator\, teaching privately and as a faculty member at Chicago’s beloved Old Town School Of Folk Music. \nTony Abboreno is an Oak Park artist. Keith Haring’s graffiti\, Stuart Davis’ “American Cubism” and Andy Warhol’s pop imagery have been a major influence in Tony’s work. He works mainly in acrylic on canvas and watercolor. He uses images of contemporary iconic figures incorporating calligraphic line designs. The graffiti-like expressions awaken the viewers’ interest in beauty in all aspects of the visual scene and the persistence of memories unique to American\nlife. His works continue to develop and include realistic works that honor American industry. \n \n \n\nJoe Abboreno is an Oak Park artist who creates whimsical icons\, designs\, and paintings influenced by the games\, snacks\, pop-culture\, and worlds that he loves. His whimsical\, cartoon style creates an experience where his visuals merge with the viewers ideas and fantasies. Joe’s informal and empowering creations are meant to bring a bit of joy to viewer’s life. If more people can smile early and smile often we can create a world in which we lift each other up and do amazing things. He believes that if we give people a reason to smile\, we might just get to smile too.
