SUMMARY:FAN: Attention Span: Find Focus\, Fight Distraction
DESCRIPTION:We spend an average of just 47 seconds on any screen before shifting our attention. It takes 25 minutes to bring our attention back to a task after an interruption. And we interrupt ourselves more than we’re interrupted by others. In Attention Span: A Groundbreaking Way to Restore Balance\, Happiness and Productivity\, psychologist Gloria Mark\, Ph.D. reveals these and more surprising results from her decades of research into how technology affects our attention. \nBased on decades of original research in what Prof. Mark calls “living laboratories\,” where she studies technology use in people’s real-world environments\, Attention Span not only presents the science of exactly how short our attention spans have become\, how much we’re interrupted and how much stress that causes us\, but also how we can gain control of our attention and achieve wellbeing. \nProf. Mark is Chancellor’s Professor Emerita at the University of California\, Irvine\, and has been a visiting senior researcher at Microsoft Research since 2012. For over two decades she has studied the impact of digital media on people’s lives\, focusing on how using our devices affects our multitasking\, distractions\, mood\, and behavior. She has also been a Fulbright scholar and has received the prestigious NSF Career grant. \nProf. Mark will be in conversation with David Epstein (FAN ’16 and ’20)\, a science writer and author of the New York Times bestsellers Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World\, and The Sports Gene. Epstein was previously an investigative reporter at ProPublica\, and prior to that a senior writer at Sports Illustrated. His two TED Talks on human development and performance have been viewed 12 million times. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. \n \nBONUS AFTER-HOURS EVENT: Attendees who purchase a copy of Attention Span from FAN’s partner bookseller The Book Stall are invited to attend an AFTER-HOURS event hosted by Prof. Mark that will start immediately after the webinar. Details on the webinar registration page.

SUMMARY:Do Not Submit-Lake Forest
DESCRIPTION:DNS takes place the second Wednesday of every month (except February)\nDo Not Submit Lake Forest takes place in a cozy room in the Gorton Center\, Lake Forest. It is a monthly storytelling open mic in an enthusiastic\, supportive environment free from pressure\, judgment\, or scoring. No experience is necessary to participate. All are welcome to speak or simply listen. Arrive at 7:15 to sign up for a spot\, and when your name is called\, participants will have up to 7 minutes to tell/read/tap dance any personal story/fiction/essay on proper flossing they’d like. All language and content is acceptable except for hate speech. No cover charge. Beer\, wine and non alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Hosted by Elizabeth Brown\, Mary Lou Gilliam\, and Sarita Miller and Jasmin Rodriguez \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Your Hosts\n \nAs a pathologist\, Elizabeth Brown spent hundreds of hours hunched over either a microscope or a dead body.  She then worked as a consultant to the medical device industry writing technical reports\, all dry as dust and utterly humerous.  Original thoughts were few\, as all statements had to be referenced.   Spreading her wings to creative non-fiction has been a liberating joy.  Elizabeth has performed at story telling events in Highwood\, Arlington Heights\, Evanston and Chicago\, but is delighted to be hosting an open mic in her home town of Lake Forest.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nMary Lou Gilliam is retired from two careers: English teaching and educational publishing. She has been on the stage since she was 10 doing dramatic readings\, singing\, or some combination thereof. An English major with a theater minor\, she found that teaching extended the performance world when she began writing first person narratives to model both writing and speaking for her students. Because she was born and raised in a small Swedish farm town in western Illinois\, think Garrison Keillor for thematic content. About ten years ago\, while considering retirement\, she took her stories on the road\, so to speak\, by joining Short Story Theatre in the Northshore suburbs. She has also performed at Story Lab Chicago\, Truth Be Told\, and Backyard Stories. Having lived quite a few decades by now\, her narratives include both the travails and thrills of a long (and possibly over-examined) life. She keeps busy with volunteer work\, private tutoring\, international travel\, and as much time with her four grandchildren as she can.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nSarita Miller is a retired English/language arts teacher and the mother of two fine adults\, a lovely daughter-in-law\, and one adorable pup. Presently\, Sarita tutors reading\, writing\, and grammar\, something she greatly enjoys. During her days as a middle school teacher\, Sarita was known for telling stories during lessons. Although her students thought they were pulling one over on her and getting her “off task” when they asked for a story\, she explains that doing so was her plan from the beginning. To Sarita\, life is simply stories. She has shared several of hers with audiences at Short Story Theater in Highland Park and Story Lab in Chicago.\n\n\n\n\n  \nJasmin Rodriguez is a trained actress with over 9 years of stage\, commercial\, film\, storytelling experience. Most recently she completed commercial’s  for Malman Law and Spirit Juice. She has worked  in several independent films\, such as “Faithful Disappointment’s”\, Market Value”  and the TV true crime series “American Greed”. She completed her training at Second City\, Vagabond\, Sarantos Studios\, Wheaton Drama\, and Gorton Drama Studio. Jasmin is a dedicated actress and hard worker who is constantly looking to improve her talents. She is currently in development for producing and acting in an independent short film about human connection. She enjoys nature walks by the lake\, bike riding\, yoga and travels to Europe.

SUMMARY:FAN: Look Again: The Power of Noticing What Was Always There
DESCRIPTION:It’s common to feel jaded and unexcited by what many consider the mundane in our day to day lives. Years into a dream job\, a happy relationship\, or a beloved apartment\, the very things that once thrilled us can take on the ho hum. We also get used to the terrible: corruption\, lies\, dirty air\, misinformation\, toxic relationships. \nBut what if we could find a way to see everything anew? What if you could regain sensitivity\, not only to the great things in your life\, but also to the terrible things you stopped noticing and so don’t try to change? In Look Again: The Power of Noticing What Was Always There professors Cass R. Sunstein and Tali Sharot\, Ph.D. share with readers a groundbreaking study of how disrupting our well-worn routines\, both good and bad\, can rejuvenate our days and reset our brains to allow us to live happier and more fulfilling lives. The key to this disruption—to seeing\, feeling\, and noticing again—is change. By temporarily changing your environment\, changing the rules\, changing the people you interact with—or even just stepping back and imagining change—you regain sensitivity\, allowing you to identify more clearly the bad and more deeply appreciate the good. \nProf. Sunstein is the Robert Walmsley University Professor at Harvard Law School and is the nation’s most-cited legal scholar. He taught at the University of Chicago Law School for 27 years\, and for the past fifteen years\, he has been at the forefront of behavioral economics. His book Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health\, Wealth\, and Happiness\, coauthored with Nobel laureate Richard H. Thaler\, was a national bestseller. From 2009 to 2012\, he served as the administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs; since that time\, he has served in the US government in multiple capacities. \nProf. Sunstein will be in conversation with Ayelet Fishbach\, Ph.D. (FAN ’22)\, the Jeffrey Breakenridge Keller Professor of Behavioral Science and Marketing at the University of Chicago\, Booth School of Business\, and the author of the award-winning book Get It Done: Surprising Lessons from the Science of Motivation. She is the past president of the Society for the Science of Motivation and the International Social Cognition Network. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. \n \nBONUS AFTER-HOURS EVENT: Attendees who purchase a copy of Look Again from FAN’s partner bookseller The Book Stall are invited to attend an AFTER-HOURS event hosted by Prof. Sunstein that will start immediately after the webinar. SUMMARY:FAN: Practical Optimism: The Art\, Science\, and Practice of Exceptional Well-Being
DESCRIPTION:Sue Varma\, MD\, the first medical director treating first responders and civilians for PTSD\, depression\, and anxiety at the World Trade Center Mental Health program (WTC MHP)\, made a fascinating discovery: she realized that fostering an optimistic mindset firmly grounded in reality is crucial for making wise and reasonable decisions. In her debut book\, Practical Optimism: The Art\, Science\, and Practice of Exceptional Well-Being\, Dr. Varma blends philosophy\, personal experiences\, and the latest research in psychology\, psychiatry\, medicine\, and neuroscience to guide readers on a path toward resilience and personal growth. \nOptimists tend to achieve more success\, report higher incomes and job satisfaction\, adopt healthier habits\, build stronger relationships\, and experience greater overall life satisfaction\, ultimately leading to increased happiness. Practical optimists are resourceful\, realistic\, and thoughtful problem solvers who possess something of rare value: the inner resources to cope during a crisis and to use as fuel to flourish. Practical optimism is a transformative approach to experiencing greater meaning\, mastery\, and acceptance. \nDr. Varma is a distinguished psychiatrist and cognitive behavioral therapist based and holds the position of Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at New York University Langone Health. Her accomplishments have been recognized by the American Psychiatric Association\, where she was named a Distinguished Fellow\, the highest honor bestowed upon its members. \nDr. Varma will be in conversation with Tara Lipinski\, the internationally acclaimed American figure skater. At the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano\, Japan\, Lipinski became the youngest female to capture the Olympic gold medal in figure-skating. She now has new roles as a sports commentator\, an actress\, a documentary film producer\, a philanthropist\, and more. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. \nBONUS AFTER-HOURS EVENT: Attendees who purchase a copy of Practical Optimism from FAN’s partner bookseller The Book Stall are invited to attend an AFTER-HOURS event hosted by Varma and Lipinski that will start immediately after the webinar. SUMMARY:Drawing with Ink\, Pencil & Charcoal with Joalida Smit
DESCRIPTION:THIS CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELLED. PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE WEDNESDAY CLASS!\nIn this class Joalida will teach your teen contemporary art-making using pencils\, charcoal and ink. Focusing on black and white helps developing artists to focus on the more technical aspects of drawing: light\, shading and composition.  Charcoal and ink is also a very expressive medium and great for teens to learn how to use expressive mark-making in their art. \nYounger teens with drawing skills may benefit from this art class as it will teach the fundamentals of drawing. \nThe Wednesday class focuses on painting on paper and canvas and drawing skills are assumed and not taught directly.  Ages 12 – 17 \nMaterials list \n\nWillow charcoal sticks\nset of charcoal pencils\nset of drawing pencils (2B\, 4B\, 6B)\nBlack India ink\nSketchbook with textured surface (larger than document size preferred)\n\nWhy take an art class?\n \nTeens can benefit from taking an art class for a variety of reasons. It supports cognitive and emotional development. In particular\, it facilitates executive functioning through planning and organising ideas and solving problems as they emerge during the process.  It is a stress-release and can be therapeutic\,providing a unique way for teens to communicate thoughts\, emotions\, and ideas that might be difficult to express through words alone. It builds self-esteem\, facilitates personal growth and social-emotional development as budding artists develop their skills in the presence of others. \nRegardless of their career aspirations\, engaging in artistic activities within a class environment can contribute to a teen’s overall personal development and well-being. \nPhoto credit of Joalida: James Gustin
