SUMMARY:Teen Draw & Paint with Joalida Smit
DESCRIPTION:Draw & Paint with Joalida\nCome hang out in a space where creativity comes alive. Artist and educator Joalida Smit invites teens to join her ongoing art class at the Gorton Center. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, J’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, J gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Because of this\, every class feels fresh and exciting. \nAnd here’s the best part: the goal isn’t to finish identical projects. Instead\, the focus is on exploration\, creativity\, and storytelling. Students learn how to express themselves\, share their ideas\, and bring imagination to life. As a result\, they walk away with more than just artwork. They leave with stronger skills\, bigger confidence\, and a deeper connection to their creativity. \nFinally\, this class gives teens a safe\, supportive space to take risks\, try new things\, and grow as artists. Step by step\, they discover the joy of creating something that’s truly their own. \nSo\, why not join J in the studio? It’s a place where individuality is celebrated\, creativity flows\, and every teen has a chance to shine. \nAll materials are provided\, so students can fully immerse themselves in the process without the need to bring supplies. Ages: 11 – 17 \nSkill Level: Intermediate to advanced – Prior art experience and a sincere interest in art are required. \nNote: This is an art development class\, not a recreational after-school club. Students are expected to take their art practice seriously and to respect the shared studio space. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

SUMMARY:DREAM SCHOOL: FINDING THE COLLEGE THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU
DESCRIPTION:Attending college has long been a rite of passage for millions of teens and a bedrock of the American dream. But that well-worn path has lately taken a wrong turn\, denying admission even to super-achievers and putting intolerable stress on family finances. Now\, in Dream School: Finding the College That’s Right for You\, Jeff Selingo (FAN ’20\, ’21\, ’22) shifts the spotlight from how colleges pick students to how students can better pick colleges. \nWith test-optional policies and grade inflation leveling the playing field for applicants\, getting into prestigious schools has become a kind of lottery. “Plan A” may work out\, but increasingly it isn’t—so Selingo urges families to ditch the “Top 25 or bust” mindset and look beyond the usual suspects. Hidden-gem schools with incredible value and rich opportunities are waiting to be discovered. \nBacked by unparalleled research—and an eye-opening survey of more than 3\,000 parents—Dream School reveals what really matters in a college: strong job prospects after graduation\, hands-on learning experiences\, and a sense of belonging. To help students find their perfect match\, Selingo highlights 75 accessible and affordable colleges that will satisfy those priorities. \nOrganized into three easy-to-digest sections\, Dream School explains why elite college degrees turn out to matter less than you think\, why many parents and students are choosing value over prestige\, and how to make sure the degree really pays off. \nSelingo is a New York Times bestselling author of three books on education and the job market. For more than twenty-five years\, his in-depth reporting and storytelling have provided practical insight about the future of higher education and the workforce to university leaders\, corporate executives\, as well as students and parents. \nSelingo will be in conversation with prominent New York Times journalist Frank Bruni (FAN ’15)\, author of Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be\, about the college admissions mania; The Beauty of Dusk; and most recently\, The Age of Grievance. He is the Eugene C. Patterson Professor of the Practice of Journalism and Public Policy at Duke University\, teaching media-oriented classes in the Sanford School of Public Policy. \nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY! FAN is giving away copies of Dream School to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:SALSArobics
DESCRIPTION:Get Ready to Move with SALSArobics!\nJoin Esther Gutierrez Sloan every Friday for a dynamic workout that blends fun\, rhythm\, and full-body movement. This class isn’t just about exercise – it’s about joy\, discovery\, and the thrill of dance! \nThroughout the session\, participants choose their intensity level – low\, moderate\, or high – while moving to irresistible Latin\, Caribbean\, Spanish\, and African beats. Options for both low-impact and high-impact movements allow everyone to customize their experience. \nEach class delivers an energizing workout that averages 4\,000 to 4\,200 steps\, with varying degrees of intensity. Esther integrates the Total Body Training (TBT) Systems Methodology to support proper posture and promote muscle conditioning. She also incorporates Peripheral Heart Action (PHA) Training\, offering an optional challenge that builds aerobic strength based on individual pace and rhythm. \nTo build coordination and balance\, the class includes inline motion drills. Participants move across the room using steps that change direction – laterally\, diagonally\, forward\, and backward—adding functional movement to the workout. \nThe session concludes with Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching to enhance flexibility and recovery. \nColombian-born Esther Gutierrez Sloan created SALSArobics in 1989 to fuse authentic Latin rhythms with aerobic exercise. She has performed on national and local television in Illinois\, California\, Florida\, and New York. In addition to leading classes\, she has presented SALSArobics at fitness conventions\, schools\, health clubs\, ethnic festivals\, and international events. \nIn recognition of her groundbreaking work\, Esther was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2010.

SUMMARY:Tai Chi
DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, it is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s class. \nHealth Benefits \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found it is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nIt is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

SUMMARY:Art Impact: Sunflower Painting
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the iconic sunflower series of Vincent van Gogh\, this immersive painting experience invites participants to pick up a brush\, take to the canvas\, and create their own interpretation of one of art history’s most beloved masterpieces. \nIn this workshop\, you will paint with acrylics while drawing inspiration from Van Gogh’s vibrant style. Step by step\, you will also follow your own creative instincts. Together\, these approaches will help you explore the art of master copying. This time-honored method builds skill in brushwork\, composition\, and color theory. \nAt the same time\, the process goes beyond technique. Painting sunflowers carries a special meaning. These radiant flowers symbolize joy\, resilience\, and hope. Therefore\, the practice becomes both uplifting and mindful.

SUMMARY:Fencing
DESCRIPTION:En Garde! Prét? Allez! \nSign your child up for fencing lessons at Gorton! \nThis class is perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to sharpen their basic fencing skills. We’ll cover the rules of fencing\, proper etiquette\, footwork\, and both attack and defense techniques. \nEach fencing lesson includes a warm-up\, footwork drills\, group instruction\, and bouting (practice matches). The instructor will guide students every step of the way. \nPlease dress comfortably and bring water. Open to ages 7–14. \nWhy learn to fence?\n\nFencing builds balance\, coordination\, and agility. These skills carry over into other sports and everyday life. \nYou don’t need to be a natural athlete to start. Our lessons ease you into the sport at your own pace. \nFencing sharpens your mind as much as your body. It encourages quick thinking\, creative problem-solving\, and smart strategy. \nPlus\, the sport teaches discipline\, respect\, responsibility\, and sportsmanship – values that go far beyond the fencing strip. \nHistory of Fencing\nDid you know the archaeological evidence of fencing dates back to 1190 B.C.E.? The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility.\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. They have been serving the Chicagoland community for over 10 years. Their experience comes from National\, NCAA\, and Olympic champions. Their programs range from introductory levels to advanced competitive aspirations. Midwest Fencing Club welcomes all ages to learn fencing\, enjoy it as a hobby\, or turn it into their professional sport.

SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival Closing Night Feature: SPEAK.
DESCRIPTION:The Lake County Film Festival returns for its milestone 15th edition\, bringing an exciting and diverse slate of films to local audiences from September 4–7 and September 12–15\, 2025. The festival will screen more than 134 films\, including 17 feature-length films and over 120 short films from around the world. \nGorton Center is proud to be hosting the closing night feature film\, “Speak.”!\nABOUT THE FILM \nLOGLINE \nFive top-ranked high school oratory students spend a year crafting spellbinding spoken word performances with the dream of winning one of the world’s largest and most intense public speaking competitions. \nLONG SYNOPSIS \nSPEAK follows five of the nation’s top teenage speech competitors\, capturing the euphoria of victory and the devastation of defeat as they craft and perform original oratories over the course of a 9-month season. Their dream is simple: To win the Super Bowl of public speaking\, the NSDA Nationals. \nWe witness them\, their coaches and their parents as they fight to keep school speech programs alive amid budget cuts\, book bans and censorship efforts that reach a fevered pitch during the 2024 election year. \nThe film begins at the 2023 National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) Championships\, introducing our eclectic orators: Noor\, Noah\, Sam\, Mfaz and Esther\, the two-time reigning national champion in Oratory. We follow them to the 2024 Nationals\, where Esther hopes to beat the record set by SPEAK’s Executive Producer\, Josh Gad\, in 1999. \nSPEAK captures the passion\, joy—and courage—of unforgettable teens using their voices to change hearts and minds. This film is the perfect antidote for these fraught times—intense\, funny\, and most of all\, hopeful. \nDirectorsJennifer Tiexiera\, Guy Mossman\nStars: Esther\, Mfaz\, Noah

SUMMARY:AFTER THE SPIKE: POPULATION\, PROGRESS\, AND THE CASE FOR PEOPLE
DESCRIPTION:Most people on Earth today live in a country where birth rates already are too low to stabilize the population: fewer than two children for every two adults. In After the Spike: Population\, Progress\, and the Case for People\, economists Dean Spears\, Ph.D.\, and Michael Geruso\, Ph.D.\, sound a wakeup call\, explaining why global depopulation is coming\, why it matters\, and what to do now. \nIt would be easy to think that fewer people would be better—better for the planet\, better for the people who remain. This book invites us all to think again. Despite what we may have been told\, depopulation is not the solution we urgently need for environmental challenges like climate change. Nor will it raise living standards by dividing what the world can offer across fewer of us. Spears and Geruso investigate what depopulation would mean for the climate\, for living standards\, for equity\, for progress\, for freedom\, for humanity’s general welfare. And what it would mean if\, instead\, people came together to share the work of caregiving and of building societies where parenting fits better with everything else that people aspire to. \nWith new evidence and sharp insights\, Spears and Geruso make a lively and compelling case for stabilizing the population—without sacrificing our dreams of a greener future or reverting to past gender inequities. They challenge us to see how depopulation threatens social equity and material progress\, and how welcoming it denies the inherent value of every human life. More than an assembly of the most important facts\, After the Spike asks what future we should want for our planet\, for our children\, and for one another. \nGeruso is an economic demographer\, public economist\, and associate professor of economics at the University of Texas at Austin. He served as a senior economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers\, where he advised on issues of health and demography. He holds bachelor’s degrees in engineering\, political science\, and philosophy\, and earned his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton. \nGeruso will be in conversation with Katy Milkman\, Ph.D.\, the James G. Dinan Professor at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the host of Charles Schwab’s popular behavioral economics podcast Choiceology. She is also the co-founder and co-director (with Angela Duckworth\, Ph.D.\, FAN ’12\, ’16) of the Behavior Change for Good Initiative at Penn. \nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY! FAN is giving away copies of After the Spike to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Take Your Painting to the Next Level
DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your painting to the next level? \nThis class is ideal for artists who already have some experience painting in Oil\, Acrylic\, Gouache\, or Pastel and are ready to grow their skills further. If you’ve been wanting to turn a photo into a painting or have started a piece but feel unsure about how to move forward\, this is the perfect opportunity to get expert guidance and renewed inspiration. \nEach student brings in either a reference photo or an unfinished painting to work on during class. From there\, artist and instructor Michael Latala provides hands-on\, individualized instruction to help you make confident artistic decisions. First\, he’ll show you how to evaluate your photo reference—guiding you in choosing what elements to include and what to leave out. Then\, through clear demonstrations\, he’ll help you resolve common issues like washed-out highlights or areas that have gone too dark to read. \nThroughout the class\, Michael gives each student personal attention. If you’d prefer to keep your canvas untouched\, he’s happy to demonstrate his suggestions digitally using Procreate on his iPad Pro. This digital approach allows you to visualize changes before applying them\, which can be especially helpful when exploring different color choices or compositional edits. \nImportantly\, this class is all about progress at your own pace. There’s no pressure to finish quickly. Instead\, you’re encouraged to slow down\, focus on what you’re learning\, and enjoy the process. With consistent support and practice\, you’ll discover how to turn your ideas into beautiful\, well-executed paintings—just the way you imagined them. \nThis series is a total of 8 sessions\, all will be 7 – 9:30pm \n\nSeptember 17\nOctober 15\nNovember 12\nDecember 17\nJanuary 15\nFebruary 18\nMarch 18
