SUMMARY:FAN: Failures of Forgiveness: What We Get Wrong and How to Do Better
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nAdvice | Behavior | Character | Civics | Culture | Empathy | Ethics | Grief | Inequality | Leadership | Mental Health | Morality | Philosophy | Psychology | Race | Relationships | Religion | Social Justice | Trauma | Well Being\nBONUS AFTER-HOURS EVENT: Attendees who purchase a copy of Failures of Forgiveness from FAN’s partner bookseller The Book Stall are invited to attend an AFTER-HOURS event hosted by Prof. Cherry and Mr. Stewart that will start immediately after the webinar. Details on the webinar registration page. \n \nMyisha Cherry\, Ph.D.’s investigation of forgiveness began after the mass shooting at Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston\, South Carolina\, when some who had lost loved ones forgave what seemed unforgiveable. She was troubled by observers who focused on this “inspiring” response over the racial hatred that led to this tragedy. As associate professor of philosophy at the University of California\, Riverside\, where she also directs the Emotion and Society Lab\, she was moved to pin down the potential and pitfalls of how we make amends—to provide careful\, moral prescriptions. \nProf. Cherry’s new book\, Failures of Forgiveness: What We Get Wrong and How to Do Better is a reckoning with widespread\, wrongheaded beliefs. She examines how forgiveness can go wrong in families\, between friends\, at work\, in the media\, and in politics. Prof. Cherry addresses forgiveness and race\, cancelling versus forgiving\, forgiving yourself\, and more. She argues that we can forgive and still be angry; there can be good reasons not to forgive; and forgiving a wrong without tackling root causes solves nothing. \nProviding new pathways to think about the ways we expect and react to wrongdoing\, Prof. Cherry offers in-depth advice and takeaways\, including 1) Forgiveness entails forgivers\, withholders\, and requestors\, not just villains and victims; 2) Forgiveness is not an action or a process\, but rather a set of moral practices; 3) It can end with relief\, release\, or reconciliation; and 4) Forgiveness will not save us but changing our relationship with it will get us closer to saving ourselves. \nProf. Cherry is the author of The Case for Rage: Why Anger Is Essential to Anti-Racist Struggle and UnMuted: Conversations on Prejudice\, Oppression\, and Social Justice\, which draws on her popular podcast UnMute. She will be in conversation with Danté Stewart\, is a theologian\, essayist\, cultural critic\, and author of Shoutin’ In The Fire: An American Epistle. Mr. Stewart’s work has appeared in the Atlantic\, New York Times\, the Washington Post\, TIME\, ESPN’s Andscape\, Oxford American\, Sojourners\, NPR\, CNN\, MSNBC\, and more. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. \n\n\n\n\nBONUS AFTER-HOURS EVENT: Attendees who purchase a copy of Failures of Forgiveness from FAN’s partner bookseller The Book Stall are invited to attend an AFTER-HOURS event hosted by Prof. Cherry and Mr. Stewart that will start immediately after the webinar. SUMMARY:Salsarobics
DESCRIPTION:Join Esther Gutierrez Sloan for a fun workout that happens each Friday! The major distinction of this program is that the joy\, fun\, and discovery are ongoing!! \nThe option of varying intensity levels from low to moderate to high is a choice that is ongoing throughout the class\, while moving to a myriad of enticing Latin\, Caribbean\, Spaniard and African beats. Low-impact and high-impact options are also presented to choose from. \n-Esther offers an experience that averages  4000-4200 steps with varying degrees of intensity. \n-Total Body Training (TBT) Systems Methodology is used to maintain proper postural alignment and ensure muscular conditioning. \n-Pheripheral Heart Action (PHA) training methodology is used to work with aerobic intensity which is  optional and challenged based on the level that the participant chooses to execute the rhythmic steps \n-Using inline motion protocol\, moving from one end of the room to the other end makes the participant effectively and functionally use steps\, while working on balance and coordination by changing direction {lateral\, diagonal\, front\, backward). \nProprioceptive Neurological Facilitation (PNF) stretching is performed at the end of the session. \nSALSArobics was created by Colombian-born Esther Gutierrez Sloan.  Esther has performed SALSArobics on national television and local television in Illinois\, California\, Florida and New York. \nEsther has led SALSArobics classes\, exhibitions\, workshops and presentations at fitness conventions\, health clubs\, schools\, fundraising events\, ethnic festivals\, internationally and nationally. \nEsther was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2010 in recognition of her pioneering efforts to introduce authentic Latin rhythms and dance steps into aerobic exercise in 1989 when she created SALSArobics.

With their relaxed\, slightly jazzy pop\, The Samples were one of the most popular touring bands of the early ’90s. Born out of Boulder\, CO in the late 80’s\, the band’s name came from their reliance on sustenance as starving artists on food samples in grocery stores.  Their reggae-inspired pop-rock with a touch of bluegrass and Grateful Dead\, polished off by a sound reminiscent of The Police\, led to exponential growth in popularity\, particularly among college students. \nThe Samples embarked on their first national tour in the summer of 1988 and gradually gained attention.  After a bad experience with a major label\, the band began releasing their own records independently\, building support through a grassroots network of fans. Through constant touring\, the Samples were able to keep building their fan base. They were also busy in the studio\, recording three albums between 1992 and 1993\, with none of their albums deviating from their folky\, Sting meets Grateful Dead pop. \nThe band played mostly to college audiences and allowed their music to be spread through bootlegging and taping. Fans in college towns formed street teams to distribute the band’s music and help them get shows by popular demand. The Samples grew into a staple of the 90’s and they’re back!  Here in your hometown! \nCome join us for the last outdoor concert of the season as this legendary and beloved band jams\, while you enjoy a drink\, dance and reminisce! \nIn the event of inclement weather\, the concert will move inside to our John & Nancy Hughes Theater. Limited seating is available until the day-of\, so buy your tickets now!  If the outdoor concert goes as planned (weather permits) we will open ticket sales on the day of the event! Once sold out\, please check our website the morning of the event for tickets. \nFun food trucks on site include Mamma Mia Pizza\, La Plancha Taco Truck\, Hello Boba Tea\,  and Lake Bluff Brewery \nLead singer Sean Kelly\n \nBest known for his high voice\, unique guitar playing and songwriting (“Nature”\, “Feel Us Shaking”\, “Did You Ever Look So Nice”) rock\, reggae and folk singer/songwriter Sean Kelly was born February 7\, 1965 in Norwalk\, Connecticut. The son of a WW2 veteran and a mom who worked construction to put food on the table\, Kelly grew up in Vermont. While attending only one year of high school\, he began playing guitar and composing his own songs. After moving to Colorado in 1987 to start a band\, Kelly became a fixture on local club stages as the front man for The Samples\, playing original songs with a variety of rock\, reggae and folk. When not touring with The Samples\, he enjoys playing his songs acoustically. The Samples are currently recording their 20th album\, Indian Summer\, to be released later this year. Kelly’s songs have been featured in Perks of Being a Wallflower and more recently in television’s Younger and in ads for MSNBC’s midterm election coverage. thesamples.com \n \n  \n  \n  \n   \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tai Chi With Ken Ning
DESCRIPTION:Sign up for Gorton’s Tai Chi class and join Ken Ning each Saturday to learn and practice Tai Chi. Ken’s Tai Chi class is open to both beginners and experienced practitioners. \nTai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, Tai Chi is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits of Tai Chi below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s Tai Chi class. \nHealth Benefits of Tai Chi \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found Tai Chi is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s Tai Chi class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nTai Chi is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

SUMMARY:FAN IN-PERSON EVENT: Michelle Icard
DESCRIPTION:Speaker\, author and educator Michelle Icard discusses her book Eight Setbacks That Can Make a Child a Success with Chicago-based writer Heidi Stevens.\n \nOpen Seating – No pre-registration required \nEvery child messes up\, sometimes in ways that seem sure to wreck their futures: a bad report card\, poor sportsmanship\, and underaged drinking. These are tough moments for parent and child alike\, often complicated by the fear that the misstep is also an indictment of our parenting. But what each of these “fails” has in common for our kids is the precious silver lining of a chance for character building and developing more grit—if we help them process their mistakes well. \nAn invaluable playbook for anxious parents everywhere\, Eight Setbacks That Can Make a Child a Success by parenting expert Michelle Icard (FAN ’22)\, offers specific and unexpected advice about what to say\, what not to say\, and what to do to help children in eight categories of tense situations. Distilled from Icard’s decades of experience working with tweens\, teenagers\, and families\, she underscores that there is always a chance for a child to gain new and stronger decision-making skills\, and for the parent-child relationship to strengthen. \nIcard is the author of Fourteen Talks by Age Fourteen (2021) and Middle School Makeover (2014). She has a degree in education and has worked with parents\, children\, and teachers for more than 20 years. A writer for the Today show parenting team\, NBC News Learn\, CNN Science and Wellness\, and the Washington Post\, Icard’s work has also been featured in the Chicago Tribune\, Christian Science Monitor\, Redbook\, Time\, and People. \nIcard will be in conversation with Heidi Stevens\, Director of External Affairs for the University of Chicago’s TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health. Prior to joining TMW\, Stevens worked at the Chicago Tribune for 23 years\, where she wrote a daily column called “Balancing Act.” She maintains a weekly nationally syndicated column. Stevens also serves as a FAN board member. \nThis event is suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded but not live-streamed and will be available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. \nAdolescence | Advice | Anxiety | Behavior | Character | Connection | Empathy | Family | Love | Mental Health | Motivation | Parenting | Relationships | Well Being | Youth \nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY of Eight Setbacks at the event\, while supplies last. Book sale and signing\, too. Presented by The Book Stall Winnetka. \nOpen Seating – No pre-registration required

SUMMARY:Do Not Submit-Lake Forest
DESCRIPTION:Do Not Submit-Lake Forest is a monthly storytelling open mic in an enthusiastic\, supportive environment free from pressure\, judgment\, or scoring. No experience is necessary to participate. All are welcome to speak or simply listen. Arrive at 7:15 to sign up for a spot\, and when your name is called\, participants will have up to 7 minutes to tell/read/tap dance any personal story/fiction/essay they’d like. All language and content is acceptable except for hate speech. \n\nDNS-LF takes place in Suite 215 – a cozy room on the second floor of Gorton Center.\nBeer\, wine and nonalcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.\nHosted by Elizabeth Brown\, Mary Lou Gilliam\, and Sarita Miller\n\nAbout Your Hosts: \nAs a pathologist\, Elizabeth Brown spent hundreds of hours hunched over either a microscope or a dead body. She then worked as a consultant to the medical device industry writing technical reports\, all dry as dust and utterly humorous.  Original thoughts were few\, as all statements had to be referenced. Spreading her wings to creative non-fiction has been a liberating joy. Elizabeth has performed at storytelling events in Highwood\, Arlington Heights\, Evanston and Chicago\, but is delighted to be hosting an open mic in her home town of Lake Forest. \n  \nMary Lou Gilliam is retired from two careers: English teaching and educational publishing. She has been on the stage since she was 10 doing dramatic readings\, singing\, or some combination thereof. An English major with a theater minor\, she found that teaching extended the performance world when she began writing first person narratives to model both writing and speaking for her students. Because she was born and raised in a small Swedish farm town in western Illinois\, think Garrison Keillor for thematic content. About ten years ago\, while considering retirement\, she took her stories on the road\, so to speak\, by joining Short Story Theatre in the Northshore suburbs. She has also performed at Story Lab Chicago\, Truth Be Told\, and Backyard Stories. Having lived quite a few decades by now\, her narratives include both the travails and thrills of a long (and possibly over-examined) life. She keeps busy with volunteer work\, private tutoring\, international travel\, and as much time with her four grandchildren as she can. \nSarita Miller is a retired English/language arts teacher and the mother of two fine adults\, a lovely daughter-in-law\, and one adorable pup. Presently\, Sarita tutors reading\, writing\, and grammar\, something she greatly enjoys. During her days as a middle school teacher\, Sarita was known for telling stories during lessons. Although her students thought they were pulling one over on her and getting her “off task” when they asked for a story\, she explains that doing so was her plan from the beginning. To Sarita\, life is simply stories. She has shared several of hers with audiences at Short Story Theater in Highland Park and Story Lab in Chicago.

SUMMARY:Salsarobics
DESCRIPTION:No class on October 13! Join us for the next session on Friday\, October 20!\nJoin Esther Gutierrez Sloan for a fun workout that happens each Friday! The major distinction of this program is that the joy\, fun\, and discovery are ongoing!! \nThe option of varying intensity levels from low to moderate to high is a choice that is ongoing throughout the class while moving to a myriad of enticing Latin\, Caribbean\, Spaniard and African beats. \n-Peripheral Heart Action (PHA) training methodology is used to work with aerobic intensity which is  optional and challenged based on the level that the participant chooses to execute the rhythmic steps \n-Using inline motion protocol\, moving from one end of the room to the other end makes the participant effectively and functionally use steps\, while working on balance and coordination by changing direction {lateral\, diagonal\, front\, backward).

SUMMARY:After School Art Club with Carole Pearlman
DESCRIPTION:Calling all artists! This after-school art class will not only provide an incredible outlet for self-expression but also help students to develop motor skills\, visual-spatial skills\, and problem-solving skills. Each week a different artist will be featured to inspire students to create their own unique piece of art. This class can get messy\, so please wear old clothing or bring an apron/smock. For grades K – 3rd \nCarole Pearlman’s lifelong fascination with creativity began as a child\, in a neighborhood art class\, where making art in the backyard was the only agenda for an entire summer. Many art classes later Carole completed a BFA in painting\, a MEd in Educational Therapy\, and an MA in Developmental Psychology. Integrating the disciplines of art\, education\, and psychology Carole developed The Joy of Creativity Art program. Carole works as a facilitator of creativity with students ages 4 to 84! Through her teaching\, research\, and daily practice\, she believes that being creative is an essential part of a balanced life. Carole is a professional artist and certified teacher.
