In Normal Broken: The Grief Companion for When It’s Time to Heal But You’re Not Sure You Want To\, award-winning writer and speaker Kelly Cervantes isn’t trying to tell you what to do\, how to feel\, or the right way to heal. She’s also not flinging sunny thoughts\, vibes\, and prayers at you. After losing her daughter to epilepsy\, she knows that grief is many things. It’s weird. It sucks. It’s all-encompassing. Something everyone will have to deal with. But never linear. Just as what we are grieving varies\, so do our journeys to process it. \nNormal Broken was born out of this desire to meet people where they are in their grief journeys\, to lend a hand\, or maybe to just sit in the dark with them. Soak in personal stories that will let you in on the heartbreaking\, the hilarious\, and everything in between. \nPast guests have included writers\, actors\, musicians\, bloggers\, activists\, professional storytellers\, Moth Grand Slam winners\, comedians\, and more from our city and around the world. We hope that you can join us. \nStories begin at 7:30 with an exciting lineup of six professional storytellers! \nBeer\, wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be for sale at the event. \n \nScott Whitehair is a storyteller\, teacher\, and producer living in Chicago\, IL. He is the producer of This Much Is True\,  creator of Story Lab Chicago\, which has put 700+ new storytellers on stage since 2011\, creator of Truth Be Told at Gorton Center Lake Forest\, and director of Do Not Submit\, a grassroots network of open mics across the city bringing people together to connect with each other. Scott tells stories anywhere someone will listen\, including The National Storytelling Festival Exchange Place\, Steppenwolf Theater\, the historic Green Mill\, and on NPR\, the Risk podcast\, and Siruis XM. He is a frequent guest instructor at the city’s top universities\, and his personal narrative class has been selling out every month since 2012. Scott is in demand as a coach and trainer\, spending his days helping individuals\, companies\, and non-profits develop their voices as storytellers. \n\nAdam Bottner:\n\nAdam is a former litigator and for the past 15 years has been Director of Business Development for a legal technology company. Born in New York\, lived in Pittsburgh\, and raised in unincorporated Des Plaines (“the Third City”)\, he is a frequent Moth story teller\, 3-time StorySLAM winner and has been featured on the Moth Story Hour radio show and podcast. He is a graduate of the Second City Training center and has written multiple screenplays\, including his most recent\, “Searching for Frenchy Fuqua”. She told her first story at the Wild Goose Festival in Hot Springs\, NC\, in 2016 and has continued her storytelling in the Chicago area on stages like Steppenwolf\, Hey Nonny\, Evanston Space\, and the Athenaeum Theater. Meg is a two-time Moth StorySlam winner and The Moth Chicago GrandSlam Champion. She is also featured on The Moth Radio Hour and The Moth Podcast. Meg is an Illinois Policy Fellow\, Youth Mental Health First Aid Instructor and teaches yoga/mindfulness. In her free time\, she loves to read\, write\, and walk her dogs in the conservation community where she resides with her wife\, daughter\, and menagerie of rescue animals. THE SUPREMES AT EARL’S ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT was chosen as a Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers selection and was also named an Illinois Reads book by the Illinois Reading Council. Together they will present to you one of Mozart’s own favorite compositions – his amazing C minor Serenade. The group will also play octets by Haydn and Beethoven. DESCRIPTION:Pete Lee was the first standup comedian to get a standing ovation on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. This happened after Jimmy personally attended one of Pete’s live shows in NYC and immediately invited him on the show. Pete’s joyful humor comes from his Midwestern roots. Raised in Janesville\, WI by divorced parents and a 19-inch television\, he was destined to pursue a career in entertainment. In 2005\, Pete flew to New York to make his television debut on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend\, and the taping went so well that he decided to move to NYC. Soon after moving to NYC\, he was selected to perform at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal\, where he was voted a standout performer. In 2008 Pete made his network television debut performing on NBC’s Last Comic Standing finishing as a semi-finalist. That same year\, he made his television acting debut on the CBS Soap Opera As The World Turns. At the end of 2008\, he shot his own Comedy Central Half Hour Special\, which earned him a cult following at comedy clubs\, and the opportunity to perform over the next ten years at 500 colleges across the country. \nIn 2010 Pete began producing and editing his own shows for the Internet which led to getting his own web show on MSN.com called New York Minute:30. His web shows attracted the attention of television talent scouts and in 2012 he was hired to be a writer and cast member on FUSE TV’s Video on Trial and the NFL Network’s Top 10’s. In 2013\, Pete was hired as a cast member on VH1’s Best Week Ever\, where he was a writer and cast member for three seasons. That same year\, he made his late night television debut on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman. \nCurrently\, Pete is a cast member of TruTV’s Greatest Ever and he hosts his own segment on Nickelodeon’s Nick Toons\, in co-ordination with the NFL\, called NFL Rush. He’s also a regular on TruTV’s Comedy Knockout and Comedy Central’s Roast Battle. And he starred in a documentary titled I Need You to Kill that is now available on iTunes and Amazon. Most recently\, Pete became a writer/cast member on the hit show This Week at the Comedy Cellar on Comedy Central\, where he can be seen every Friday night at 11pm ET. \n \nPete just moved to Los Angeles\, California\, and he launched a new podcast titled Snugglestorm\, mostly as a vehicle to sit down with LA comics and make new friends in California. But he’ll be visiting his old New York friends often\, because Jimmy Fallon officially named him a regular on The Tonight Show. \nIf you haven’t heard of Pete Lee yet\, prepare to tell other people!

DESCRIPTION:Come see a special screening as part of the Lake County Film Festival at the John & Nancy Hughes Theater at Gorton Center! \nELLIS is the first feature-length documentary about Ellis Marsalis Jr. and the Marsalis Music Family\, often called the First Family of Jazz. \nThe film chronicles the life of this exceptional New Orleans composer\, performer\, and educator\, the profound influence that the city had on him — and that he had on the jazz that came out of New Orleans. It is also a story of how one man transcended racial injustices he faced from his birth during segregation to his death from COVID 19. \nMade with the full cooperation of Ellis\, his family and everyone around him\, ELLIS is told from an insider perspective with never-before-seen footage. For three years until his passing in April 2020\, I worked closely with Ellis Marsalis on this film about his life. He tells it in his own words and he guides us through the events of his life in his own way: With his music. We filmed Ellis’ last concerts at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York and Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro in New Orleans\, and a solo concert at the Marsalis Center for Music performed exclusively for the film. \nThese concerts are interlaced with verité scenes that place Ellis in his city and with interviews with his sons Wynton\, Branford\, Delfeayo\, Ellis III.\, and Jason\, and colleagues\, and disciples. Archival footage and photos take us back to New Orleans of the early twentieth century\, to California of the fifties where Ellis served in the Marines and played with modernist giant Ornette Coleman\, to New York of the seventies where he toured\, and to his classrooms throughout the years. \nThe result is more than a biography of one of jazz’s heroes. The film interweaves Ellis’ accomplishments with key threads of American cultural history\, placing him in historical context as someone who was both deeply affected the by world around him\, and who\, by responding to it helped to shape that world.

Wildavsky cuts through the noise and anxiety surrounding this issue to offer sensible\, clear-eyed guidance for anyone who is making decisions about education and career preparation with a view to getting ahead in the workforce. \nDrawing on evidence-based research\, illuminating case studies\, and in-depth interviews\, Wildavsky shares the most vital lessons of what he calls the career arts\, which include cultivating a mix of broad and targeted skills\, taking advantage of employer-funded education benefits\, and preparing for the world as it is\, not as you wish it could be. He explains why college remains the gold standard of credentials and presents the most promising high-quality supplements and alternatives to college that can help learners combine general and job-specific skills.
