SUMMARY:An Evening with Oshima Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Unbelievably accomplished songwriters\, singers and instrumentalists. – Richard Loren\, former manager of the Grateful Dead \nSean and Jamie are two of the most inspirational people I’ve met. They perform a roots-based pop sound that is infectious and fun\, and even though a little wistful\, this song gets in your head and won’t let go. – NPR and Chris Wienk\, WEXT \n \nMaine-based indie duo\, Oshima Brothers’ have been creating music together since childhood. The brothers blend songs from the heart with blood harmonies to produce a “roots-based pop sound that is infectious.” (NPR) \nOn stage\, Sean and Jamie offer lush vocals\, live looping\, foot percussion\, electric and acoustic guitars\, vintage keyboard and bass – often all at once. They want every show to feel like a deep breath\, a dance party and a sonic embrace. When not recording or touring they find time to film and produce their own music videos\, tie their own shoes and cook elaborate feasts. Maine Public Radio’s Sara Willis describes their songs as “beautiful\, those brother harmonies can’t be beat. They are uplifting and\, let’s face it\, we need uplifting these days.”

SUMMARY:FAN: Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World
DESCRIPTION:With social media and constant connection\, the boundaries of privacy are stretched thin. Devorah Heitner\, Ph.D.’s new book Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World shows parents how to help tweens and teens navigate boundaries\, identity\, privacy\, and reputation in their digital world. \nWe can track our kids’ every move with apps\, see their grades within minutes of being posted\, and fixate on their digital footprint\, anxious that a misstep could cause them to be “canceled” or even jeopardize their admission to college. And all of this adds pressure on kids who are coming of age immersed in social media platforms that emphasize “personal brand\,” “likes\,” and “gotcha” moments. How can they figure out who they really are with zero privacy and constant judgment? \nHeitner shows us that by focusing on character\, not the threat of getting caught or exposed\, we can support our kids to be authentically themselves. Drawing on her extensive work with parents and schools as well as hundreds of interviews with kids\, parents\, educators\, clinicians\, and scholars\, Heitner offers strategies for parenting our kids in an always-connected world. \nHeitner will be in conversation with Heidi Stevens\, creative director of Parent Nation\, an initiative of the University of Chicago’s TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health. DESCRIPTION:First-timers and veterans explore their creative sides on stage and in front of the camera. The basics of acting such as hitting a mark\, enunciation and voice projection as well as more advanced acting principles such as developing a character\, developing a relationship and creating real behavior are explored. Classes consist of acting exercises\, character work\, improvising in character and doing scene work. Bring in material and characters from any play\, TV show\, film\, book – anything that interests you. Performance material will also be provided. Strengthen your technique and be ready for your next audition and performance. The focus of the class is on learning about acting\, learning life skills and having fun! DESCRIPTION:WALK-INS WELCOME!\nDo Not Submit-Lake Forest is a monthly storytelling open mic in an enthusiastic\, supportive environment free from pressure\, judgment\, or scoring. No experience is necessary to participate. All are welcome to speak or simply listen. Arrive at 7:15 to sign up for a spot\, and when your name is called\, participants will have up to 7 minutes to tell/read/tap dance any personal story/fiction/essay they’d like. All language and content is acceptable except for hate speech. \n\nDNS-LF takes place in Suite 215-a cozy room on the second floor of Gorton Center.\nBeer\, wine and nonalcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.\nHosted by Elizabeth Brown\, Mary Lou Gilliam\, Sarita Miller and Jasmin Rodriguez\n\nDNS always takes place the second Wednesday of the month (except February)\nAs a pathologist\, Elizabeth Brown spent hundreds of hours hunched over either a microscope or a dead body.  She then worked as a consultant to the medical device industry writing technical reports\, all dry as dust and utterly humorous. Original thoughts were few\, as all statements had to be referenced.   Spreading her wings to creative non-fiction has been a liberating joy. Elizabeth has performed at storytelling events in Highwood\, Arlington Heights\, Evanston and Chicago\, but is delighted to be hosting an open mic in her hometown of Lake Forest. \n \n Mary Lou Gilliam is retired from two careers: English teaching and educational publishing. She has been on the stage since she was 10 doing dramatic readings\, singing\, or some combination thereof. An English major with a theater minor\, she found that teaching extended the performance world when she began writing first-person narratives to model both writing and speaking for her students. Because she was born and raised in a small Swedish farm town in western Illinois\, think Garrison Keillor for thematic content. About ten years ago\, while considering retirement\, she took her stories on the road\, so to speak\, by joining Short Story Theatre in the Northshore suburbs. She has also performed at Story Lab Chicago\, Truth Be Told\, and Backyard Stories. Having lived quite a few decades by now\, her narratives include both the travails and thrills of a long (and possibly over-examined) life. She keeps busy with volunteer work\, private tutoring\, international travel\, and  spending as much time with her four grandchildren as she can.  \n \nSarita Miller is a retired English/language arts teacher and the mother of two fine adults\, a lovely daughter-in-law\, and one adorable pup. Presently\, Sarita tutors reading\, writing\, and grammar\, something she greatly enjoys. During her days as a middle school teacher\, Sarita was known for telling stories during lessons. Although her students thought they were pulling one over on her and getting her “off task” when they asked for a story\, she explains that doing so was her plan from the beginning. To Sarita\, life is simply stories. She has shared several of hers with audiences at Short Story Theater in Highland Park and  Story Lab in Chicago.   \nJasmin Rodriguez is a trained actress with over 9 years of stage\, commercial\, film\, storytelling experience. Most recently she completed commercial’s  for Malman Law and Spirit Juice. She has worked  in several independent films\, such as “Faithful Disappointment’s”\, Market Value”  and the TV true crime series “American Greed”. She completed her training at Second City\, Vagabond\, Sarantos Studios\, Wheaton Drama\, and Gorton Drama Studio. Jasmin is a dedicated actress and hard worker who is constantly looking to improve her talents. She is currently in development for producing and acting in an independent short film about human connection. She enjoys nature walks by the lake\, bike riding\, yoga and travels to Europe.

DESCRIPTION:Come see a special screening as part of the Lake County Film Festival at the John & Nancy Hughes Theater at Gorton Center! \nELLIS is the first feature-length documentary about Ellis Marsalis Jr. and the Marsalis Music Family\, often called the First Family of Jazz. \nThe film chronicles the life of this exceptional New Orleans composer\, performer\, and educator\, the profound influence that the city had on him — and that he had on the jazz that came out of New Orleans. It is also a story of how one man transcended racial injustices he faced from his birth during segregation to his death from COVID 19. \nMade with the full cooperation of Ellis\, his family and everyone around him\, ELLIS is told from an insider perspective with never-before-seen footage. For three years until his passing in April 2020\, I worked closely with Ellis Marsalis on this film about his life. He tells it in his own words and he guides us through the events of his life in his own way: With his music. We filmed Ellis’ last concerts at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York and Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro in New Orleans\, and a solo concert at the Marsalis Center for Music performed exclusively for the film. \nThese concerts are interlaced with verité scenes that place Ellis in his city and with interviews with his sons Wynton\, Branford\, Delfeayo\, Ellis III.\, and Jason\, and colleagues\, and disciples. Archival footage and photos take us back to New Orleans of the early twentieth century\, to California of the fifties where Ellis served in the Marines and played with modernist giant Ornette Coleman\, to New York of the seventies where he toured\, and to his classrooms throughout the years. \nThe result is more than a biography of one of jazz’s heroes. The film interweaves Ellis’ accomplishments with key threads of American cultural history\, placing him in historical context as someone who was both deeply affected the by world around him\, and who\, by responding to it helped to shape that world.

DESCRIPTION:Pete Lee was the first standup comedian to get a standing ovation on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. This happened after Jimmy personally attended one of Pete’s live shows in NYC and immediately invited him on the show. Pete’s joyful humor comes from his Midwestern roots. Raised in Janesville\, WI by divorced parents and a 19-inch television\, he was destined to pursue a career in entertainment. In 2005\, Pete flew to New York to make his television debut on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend\, and the taping went so well that he decided to move to NYC. Soon after moving to NYC\, he was selected to perform at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal\, where he was voted a standout performer. In 2008 Pete made his network television debut performing on NBC’s Last Comic Standing finishing as a semi-finalist. That same year\, he made his television acting debut on the CBS Soap Opera As The World Turns. At the end of 2008\, he shot his own Comedy Central Half Hour Special\, which earned him a cult following at comedy clubs\, and the opportunity to perform over the next ten years at 500 colleges across the country. \nIn 2010 Pete began producing and editing his own shows for the Internet which led to getting his own web show on MSN.com called New York Minute:30. His web shows attracted the attention of television talent scouts and in 2012 he was hired to be a writer and cast member on FUSE TV’s Video on Trial and the NFL Network’s Top 10’s. In 2013\, Pete was hired as a cast member on VH1’s Best Week Ever\, where he was a writer and cast member for three seasons. That same year\, he made his late night television debut on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman. \nCurrently\, Pete is a cast member of TruTV’s Greatest Ever and he hosts his own segment on Nickelodeon’s Nick Toons\, in co-ordination with the NFL\, called NFL Rush. He’s also a regular on TruTV’s Comedy Knockout and Comedy Central’s Roast Battle. And he starred in a documentary titled I Need You to Kill that is now available on iTunes and Amazon. Most recently\, Pete became a writer/cast member on the hit show This Week at the Comedy Cellar on Comedy Central\, where he can be seen every Friday night at 11pm ET. \n \nPete just moved to Los Angeles\, California\, and he launched a new podcast titled Snugglestorm\, mostly as a vehicle to sit down with LA comics and make new friends in California. But he’ll be visiting his old New York friends often\, because Jimmy Fallon officially named him a regular on The Tonight Show. \nIf you haven’t heard of Pete Lee yet\, prepare to tell other people!
