SUMMARY:Fencing
DESCRIPTION:En Garde! Prét? Allez! \nSign your child up for fencing lessons at Gorton! \nThis class is perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to sharpen their basic fencing skills. We’ll cover the rules of fencing\, proper etiquette\, footwork\, and both attack and defense techniques. \nEach fencing lesson includes a warm-up\, footwork drills\, group instruction\, and bouting (practice matches). The instructor will guide students every step of the way. \nPlease dress comfortably and bring water. Open to ages 7–14. \nWhy learn to fence?\n\nFencing builds balance\, coordination\, and agility. These skills carry over into other sports and everyday life. \nYou don’t need to be a natural athlete to start. Our lessons ease you into the sport at your own pace. \nFencing sharpens your mind as much as your body. It encourages quick thinking\, creative problem-solving\, and smart strategy. \nPlus\, the sport teaches discipline\, respect\, responsibility\, and sportsmanship – values that go far beyond the fencing strip. \nHistory of Fencing\nDid you know the archaeological evidence of fencing dates back to 1190 B.C.E.? The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility.\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. They have been serving the Chicagoland community for over 10 years. Their experience comes from National\, NCAA\, and Olympic champions. Their programs range from introductory levels to advanced competitive aspirations. Midwest Fencing Club welcomes all ages to learn fencing\, enjoy it as a hobby\, or turn it into their professional sport.

SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival Closing Night Feature: SPEAK.
DESCRIPTION:The Lake County Film Festival returns for its milestone 15th edition\, bringing an exciting and diverse slate of films to local audiences from September 4–7 and September 12–15\, 2025. The festival will screen more than 134 films\, including 17 feature-length films and over 120 short films from around the world. \nGorton Center is proud to be hosting the closing night feature film\, “Speak.”!\nABOUT THE FILM \nLOGLINE \nFive top-ranked high school oratory students spend a year crafting spellbinding spoken word performances with the dream of winning one of the world’s largest and most intense public speaking competitions. \nLONG SYNOPSIS \nSPEAK follows five of the nation’s top teenage speech competitors\, capturing the euphoria of victory and the devastation of defeat as they craft and perform original oratories over the course of a 9-month season. Their dream is simple: To win the Super Bowl of public speaking\, the NSDA Nationals. \nWe witness them\, their coaches and their parents as they fight to keep school speech programs alive amid budget cuts\, book bans and censorship efforts that reach a fevered pitch during the 2024 election year. \nThe film begins at the 2023 National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) Championships\, introducing our eclectic orators: Noor\, Noah\, Sam\, Mfaz and Esther\, the two-time reigning national champion in Oratory. We follow them to the 2024 Nationals\, where Esther hopes to beat the record set by SPEAK’s Executive Producer\, Josh Gad\, in 1999. \nSPEAK captures the passion\, joy—and courage—of unforgettable teens using their voices to change hearts and minds. This film is the perfect antidote for these fraught times—intense\, funny\, and most of all\, hopeful. \nDirectorsJennifer Tiexiera\, Guy Mossman\nStars: Esther\, Mfaz\, Noah

SUMMARY:AFTER THE SPIKE: POPULATION\, PROGRESS\, AND THE CASE FOR PEOPLE
DESCRIPTION:Most people on Earth today live in a country where birth rates already are too low to stabilize the population: fewer than two children for every two adults. In After the Spike: Population\, Progress\, and the Case for People\, economists Dean Spears\, Ph.D.\, and Michael Geruso\, Ph.D.\, sound a wakeup call\, explaining why global depopulation is coming\, why it matters\, and what to do now. \nIt would be easy to think that fewer people would be better—better for the planet\, better for the people who remain. This book invites us all to think again. Despite what we may have been told\, depopulation is not the solution we urgently need for environmental challenges like climate change. Nor will it raise living standards by dividing what the world can offer across fewer of us. Spears and Geruso investigate what depopulation would mean for the climate\, for living standards\, for equity\, for progress\, for freedom\, for humanity’s general welfare. And what it would mean if\, instead\, people came together to share the work of caregiving and of building societies where parenting fits better with everything else that people aspire to. \nWith new evidence and sharp insights\, Spears and Geruso make a lively and compelling case for stabilizing the population—without sacrificing our dreams of a greener future or reverting to past gender inequities. They challenge us to see how depopulation threatens social equity and material progress\, and how welcoming it denies the inherent value of every human life. More than an assembly of the most important facts\, After the Spike asks what future we should want for our planet\, for our children\, and for one another. \nGeruso is an economic demographer\, public economist\, and associate professor of economics at the University of Texas at Austin. He served as a senior economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers\, where he advised on issues of health and demography. He holds bachelor’s degrees in engineering\, political science\, and philosophy\, and earned his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton. \nGeruso will be in conversation with Katy Milkman\, Ph.D.\, the James G. Dinan Professor at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the host of Charles Schwab’s popular behavioral economics podcast Choiceology. She is also the co-founder and co-director (with Angela Duckworth\, Ph.D.\, FAN ’12\, ’16) of the Behavior Change for Good Initiative at Penn. \nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY! FAN is giving away copies of After the Spike to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Take Your Painting to the Next Level
DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your painting to the next level? \nThis class is ideal for artists who already have some experience painting in Oil\, Acrylic\, Gouache\, or Pastel and are ready to grow their skills further. If you’ve been wanting to turn a photo into a painting or have started a piece but feel unsure about how to move forward\, this is the perfect opportunity to get expert guidance and renewed inspiration. \nEach student brings in either a reference photo or an unfinished painting to work on during class. From there\, artist and instructor Michael Latala provides hands-on\, individualized instruction to help you make confident artistic decisions. First\, he’ll show you how to evaluate your photo reference—guiding you in choosing what elements to include and what to leave out. Then\, through clear demonstrations\, he’ll help you resolve common issues like washed-out highlights or areas that have gone too dark to read. \nThroughout the class\, Michael gives each student personal attention. If you’d prefer to keep your canvas untouched\, he’s happy to demonstrate his suggestions digitally using Procreate on his iPad Pro. This digital approach allows you to visualize changes before applying them\, which can be especially helpful when exploring different color choices or compositional edits. \nImportantly\, this class is all about progress at your own pace. There’s no pressure to finish quickly. Instead\, you’re encouraged to slow down\, focus on what you’re learning\, and enjoy the process. With consistent support and practice\, you’ll discover how to turn your ideas into beautiful\, well-executed paintings—just the way you imagined them. \nThis series is a total of 8 sessions\, all will be 7 – 9:30pm \n\nSeptember 17\nOctober 15\nNovember 12\nDecember 17\nJanuary 15\nFebruary 18\nMarch 18

DESCRIPTION:Get Ready to Move with SALSArobics!\nJoin Esther Gutierrez Sloan every Friday for a dynamic workout that blends fun\, rhythm\, and full-body movement. This class isn’t just about exercise – it’s about joy\, discovery\, and the thrill of dance! \nThroughout the session\, participants choose their intensity level – low\, moderate\, or high – while moving to irresistible Latin\, Caribbean\, Spanish\, and African beats. Options for both low-impact and high-impact movements allow everyone to customize their experience. \nEach class delivers an energizing workout that averages 4\,000 to 4\,200 steps\, with varying degrees of intensity. Esther integrates the Total Body Training (TBT) Systems Methodology to support proper posture and promote muscle conditioning. She also incorporates Peripheral Heart Action (PHA) Training\, offering an optional challenge that builds aerobic strength based on individual pace and rhythm. \nTo build coordination and balance\, the class includes inline motion drills. Participants move across the room using steps that change direction – laterally\, diagonally\, forward\, and backward—adding functional movement to the workout. \nThe session concludes with Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching to enhance flexibility and recovery. \nColombian-born Esther Gutierrez Sloan created SALSArobics in 1989 to fuse authentic Latin rhythms with aerobic exercise. She has performed on national and local television in Illinois\, California\, Florida\, and New York. In addition to leading classes\, she has presented SALSArobics at fitness conventions\, schools\, health clubs\, ethnic festivals\, and international events. \nIn recognition of her groundbreaking work\, Esther was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2010.

SUMMARY:Film Acting & Production: Alice in Wonderland
DESCRIPTION:On-Camera Acting and Film Production\nIn this exciting on-camera class\, students will dive into the art of film acting while helping bring two original plays — written by Jeremy Kruse and first performed on stage this past winter — to the screen. These scripts are being newly adapted for film\, with fresh scenes and storylines created just for this project. \nStudents will work on scenes from the evolving Alice Again series\, including “The Jabberwocky Necklace\,” and “Willy-Nilly.” Those who participated in the live theater productions will have the special opportunity to build on their previous roles – or work on other roles – with new material written specifically for film\, while new students can step into characters for the first time. Every student will have a sizable role. \nThroughout the class\, students will learn the subtleties that make screen acting different from stage work. They’ll also get a behind-the-scenes look at the filmmaking process. \nOnce filming wraps\, there will be a short post-production period during which Jeremy will edit the films. Within two weeks of the final class\, families will be invited to a special screening of the completed projects. Additionally\, the finished films will be submitted to local film festivals\, giving students the exciting chance to see their work shared with a wider audience. \nThis class offers a rare opportunity to develop on-camera acting skills\, contribute to an original film project from script to screen\, and be part of a creative and collaborative filmmaking experience. \n\nWednesdays and Thursdays\nAges: 8-14\n4:30pm to 6:30pm\nSeptember 24 – November 13\nScreening: December 4 at 6pm\n$800\n\nInstructor: Jeremy Kruse\nAbout Our Artistic Director:\n \nJeremy Kruse\, teacher/director/Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017).The book was published in Korean and Chinese in 2022. SUMMARY:MASTERY: WHY DEEPER LEARNING IS ESSENTIAL IN AN AGE OF DISTRACTION
DESCRIPTION:How much information is forgotten almost immediately after it is taught? How many students graduate from high school unprepared for careers where lifelong learning is essential to succeed? These problems stem from an educational system that uses time spent in a classroom and the results of standardized\, multiple-choice tests as proxies for actual understanding. In their new book\, Mastery: Why Deeper Learning is Essential in an Age of Distraction\, educators Tony Wagner\, Ed.D.\, and Ulrik Juul Christensen\, MD\, call for a radical new system of learning\, where students progress individually when they demonstrate that they can use what they have learned—no matter how long it takes to get there. This is called mastery learning\, and it is the future of education. \nThis book shows how mastery learning is already being used in the United States and around the world\, from kindergarten to college and in the workplace. Through conversations with teachers\, students\, parents\, policymakers\, and employers\, Wagner and Christensen show how mastery improves motivation and prepares students for productive work\, an engaged civic life\, and personal growth and well-being. They also outline the challenges of adopting mastery learning and how to overcome them. Mastery is an urgent call to action to transform education for all. \nChristensen is a globally recognized authority in learning technology\, and a co-founder of Area9 Group\, a leader in personalized and adaptive learning. His current focus is on Area9 Lyceum\, which has integrated the group’s educational investments and technologies to develop the fourth-generation adaptive learning platform and to pioneer four-dimensional education. \nWagner currently serves as a Senior Research Fellow at the Learning Policy Institute. He was the founder and co-director\, for more than a decade\, of the Change Leadership Group at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is the author of eight books\, including the international bestseller The Global Achievement Gap. \nChristensen and Wagner will be in conversation with Fernande Raine\, Ph.D.\, a historian\, serial entrepreneur\, and Founder and Co-Lead of History Co:Lab. \nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY! FAN is giving away copies of Mastery to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

This class isn’t just about exercise – it’s about joy\, discovery\, and the thrill of dance! \nThroughout the session\, participants choose their intensity level – low\, moderate\, or high – while moving to irresistible Latin\, Caribbean\, Spanish\, and African beats.
