We will explore different mediums\, techniques and genres  in a fun supportive environment\, where your budding artist can develop and grow at their own pace. Ages 12 – 17 \n*Your child may be asked to leave if they do not comply with the rules of the art room. \nWhy take an art class?\n \nTeens can benefit from taking an art class for a variety of reasons. It supports cognitive and emotional development. In particular\, it facilitates executive functioning through planning and organising ideas and solving problems as they emerge during the process.  It is a stress-release and can be therapeutic\,providing a unique way for teens to communicate thoughts\, emotions\, and ideas that might be difficult to express through words alone. It is a monthly storytelling open mic in an enthusiastic\, supportive environment free from pressure\, judgment\, or scoring. No experience is necessary to participate. All are welcome to speak or simply listen. Arrive at 7:15 to sign up for a spot\, and when your name is called\, participants will have up to 7 minutes to tell/read/tap dance any personal story/fiction/essay on proper flossing they’d like. All language and content is acceptable except for hate speech. No cover charge. Beer\, wine and non alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Hosted by Elizabeth Brown\, Mary Lou Gilliam\, and Sarita Miller and Jasmin Rodriguez \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Your Hosts\nAs a pathologist\, Elizabeth Brown spent hundreds of hours hunched over either a microscope or a dead body. She then worked as a consultant to the medical device industry writing technical reports\, all dryas dust and utterly humorous. Original thoughts were few\, as all statements had to be referenced.  Spreading her wings to creative non-fiction has been a liberating joy. Elizabeth has performed at story telling events in Highwood\, Arlington Heights\, Evanston and Chicago\, but is delighted to be hosting an open mic in her home town of Lake Forest. \nMary Lou Gilliam is retired from two careers: English teaching and educational publishing. She has been on the stage since she was 10 doing dramatic readings\, singing\, or some combination thereof. An English major with a theater minor\, she found that teaching extended the performance world when she began writing first person narratives to model both writing and speaking for her students. Because she was born and raised in a small Swedish farm town in western Illinois\, think Garrison Keillor for thematic content. About ten years ago\, while considering retirement\, she took her stories on the road\, so to speak\, by joining Short Story Theatre in the Northshore suburbs. She has also performed at Story Lab Chicago\, Truth Be Told\, and Backyard Stories. Having lived quite a few decades by now\, her narratives include both the travails and thrills of a long (and possibly over-examined) life. She keeps busy with volunteer work\, private tutoring\, international travel\, and as much time with her four grandchildren as she can. \nSarita Miller is a retired English/language arts teacher and the mother of two fine adults\, a lovely daughter-in-law\, and one adorable pup. Presently\, Sarita tutors reading\, writing\, and grammar\, something she greatly enjoys. During her days as a middle school teacher\, Sarita was known for telling stories during lessons. Although her students thought they were pulling one over on her and getting her “off task” when they asked for a story\, she explains that doing so was her plan from the beginning. To Sarita\, life is simply stories. She has shared several of hers with audiences at Short Story Theater in Highland Park and Story Lab in Chicago. \nJasmin Rodriguez is a trained actress with over nine years of stage\, commercial\, film\, storytelling experience. Most recently she completed commercial’s  for Malman Law and Spirit Juice. She has worked  in several independent films\, such as “Faithful Disappointment’s”\, Market Value”  and the TV true crime series “American Greed”. She completed her training at Second City\, Vagabond\, Sarantos Studios\, Wheaton Drama\, and Gorton Drama Studio. Jasmin is a dedicated actress and hard worker who is constantly looking to improve her talents. She is currently in development for producing and acting in an independent short film about human connection. She enjoys nature walks by the lake\, bike riding\, yoga and travels to Europe. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:In her latest book Unshrinking: How to Face Fatphobia\, Kate Manne\, Ph.D.\, an associate professor of philosophy at Cornell University\, delivers a definitive takedown of fatphobia\, drawing on personal experience as well as rigorous research to expose how size discrimination harms everyone\, and how to combat it. \nBlending intimate stories with the trenchant analysis that has become her signature\, Manne shows why fatphobia has become a vital social justice issue. She examines how anti-fatness operates—how it leads us to make devastating assumptions about a person’s attractiveness\, fortitude\, and intellect\, and how it intersects with other systems of oppression. Fatphobia is responsible for wage gaps\, medical neglect\, and poor educational outcomes; it is a straitjacket\, restricting our freedom\, our movement\, our potential. \nIn this urgent call to action\, Manne proposes a new politics of “body reflexivity”—a radical reevaluation of who our bodies exist in the world for: ourselves and no one else. When it comes to fatphobia\, the solution is not to love our bodies more. SUMMARY:Radius A Cappella
DESCRIPTION:Radius is an all-male identifying vocal ensemble\, hailing from different corners of the country. Radius was formed in the midst of the global pandemic with the intention of creating top-tier virtual content and bringing some light to the world during the lockdown period. After working on virtual projects for several months\, the group started to hit their stride and was fortunate enough to spend a week together in Chicago that summer\, where their debut EP\, Silver Lining\, was created. From that point on\, it was apparent that Radius was more than just a quarantine passion project: it was a group of talented\, passionate\, and hardworking friends who wanted to take their artistry to the next level. Radius released a single in September called Remember This to commemorate their first chapter as a band. Now\, Radius has transitioned to a 5 member group and is now “living the dream” in Chicago! \nRadius prides itself on creative and high-level performances of a cappella arrangements of songs that you’ve heard and loved on the radio! From oldies to jazz standards to pop ballads to R&B uptempo\, Radius has experience performing in every style. Dubbed “a cappella’s favorite boyband”\, the group uses influences from artists like the Real Group\, Boys II Men\, Pentatonix\, and VoicePlay when performing\, and we guarantee both high-quality music as well as a show that people will love! \nDylan is the bass and vocal foundation for Radius. He studied music business at both the University of Miami and at Berklee College of Music. Dylan has sang with a cappella groups during his time in school like TAG\, BisCaydence and Distilled Harmony. Along with Gabe\, Dylan also placed 2nd at the International Competition of College A Cappella Finals in 2019. \nDylan has always been a business mind from a young age\, starting 3 different music micro agencies before the age of 20. He has performed at venues like Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center and American Airlines Arena. Raised in Florida\, he knew that he wanted to pursue music since he was young\, despite being really shy and not as outgoing as most of the musicians around him. He currently functions as one of the arrangers for Radius as well as serving as business manager. \n  \n  \nGabe Schonman is a recent graduate from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami with a degree in Jazz Voice Performance. Gabe\, a Chicago native\, is grateful to be back in the Windy City\, but now making a living as a musician! In day to day Radius life\, Gabe handles musical responsibilities and takes pride on always being heard from a mile away whether you want to or not! \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nEthan Mooney is a Chicago-based performer and audio engineer known for his genre-bending solos and dedication to storytelling. Hailing from the land of horses and bourbon\, Ethan graduated cum laude with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of Kentucky in his hometown of Lexington\, Kentucky. Working closely with Sam and Ben\, Ethan rounds out the group’s self-production capabilities\, collaborating closely to produce all of the content you see online as well as running live sound during performances. \nEthan has been closely involved in the a cappella community since high school\, winning a Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award in 2017 for his arrangement and solo of “Boys in the Street” by Greg Holden. He went on to be a member of the University of Kentucky Acoustikats before dedicating himself to Radius exclusively. Ethan’s favorite part of being in the group is being able to grow\, travel\, explore\, and make memories around the world with his best friends. In his free time\, you’ll find Ethan voraciously reading\, obsessively listening to podcasts\, and making TikToks much to the dismay of his roommates Ben and Gabe. \nBen (the tall one) excels as the group’s primary visual eye\, showcasing his expertise through Radius photoshoots\, music videos\, and social media. He always makes sure the guys are looking their best and feeling as confident as possible on stage. When he’s not brainstorming ideas for the next series of Radius TikToks\, you’ll find him cuddling up with his cat Veto\, watching one of his favorite Disney movies with a Starbucks latte in hand. \nAnyone who has met Ben knows that his personality never fails to light up the room and offer the perfect dose of positivity and humor. It’s this attitude that keeps Radius going strong as the group becomes busier with gigs and spends more time away from home. Whether the group is having a fun night out\, or buckling down to prepare for the next gig\, Ben never shies away from initiating a much needed group hug. \n  \n  \nAlong with being the group’s primary vocal percussionist\, Sam contributes through arranging and audio production. One of his favorite parts of Radius is having the opportunity to travel and perform in new places. Considering he is an avid ‘Pokémon Go’ player\, this also gives him a chance to truly\, “catch em’ all.” However\, no amount of Pokémon caught or cities visited can fill the hole in his heart when he has to leave his beloved girlfriend and their sweet baby kitten behind. \nOutside of Radius\, Sam is a dedicated student of psychology. Building on his degree in psychology\, he spends his free time immersing himself in books and podcasts\, focusing on topics like personality\, relationships\, and group dynamics. It’s through these studies that he is able to offer a unique perspective to the group\, always looking for opportunities to strengthen their connection with each other and their audiences. \n  \n  \n

After graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Performance with an Emphasis on Jazz\, Dillingham’s education continued at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh\, where he worked with Jeffrey Turner\, principal bass of the Pittsburgh Symphony\, and subsequently received a Master’s of Music degree in Music Performance. Her work features re-purposed materials\, saturated color\, and improvisation\, utilizing surface design\, collage with found objects and energetic machine stitching. \nPat creates contemporary fiber art with machine-stitched\, hand-dyed and commercial fiber fragments. She is fascinated with intense saturated color with a focus on cast-off\, and re-purposed materials. She creates entire surfaces of color using fiber\, and textural elements. Each work is then energetically machine-stitched. Pat is interested in the notion of how we assign value to things. Sometimes\, humble materials play a more important role than one would imagine. She has always been intrigued with non-traditional materials. Quilts and clothing act as functional and necessary items in society for warmth\, protection and comfort\, adding beauty and decorative components through skillful craftsmanship.
