This seminar allows participants to examine how society talks about – and often avoids – the end of life. Other topics include gaps in our care systems and the definition and use of palliative and hospice care. \nYou will learn to navigate death as a unique\, personal process while acquiring tools to make meaningful end-of-life decisions. \nThis seminar welcomes anyone ready to face mortality with clarity and courage and includes those living with serious illness\, loved ones supporting someone at the end of life\, and anyone preparing their own care with intention. \nKey Questions We Will Explore\n\nHow can we navigate the death of a loved one with understanding and compassion? And how can we manage the emotions that follow?\nIn turn\, how might we envision and honor our own dying process?\nFurthermore\, what does a “good death” mean? How can we shape it to reflect our values?\nFinally\, how can we uphold what matters most – personally and culturally – as someone nears the end of life?\n\nThis is not a therapy session. Instead\, it is a candid\, interactive discussion. We will examine the physical and emotional processes of dying. By creating a space for open exploration\, participants will leave feeling empowered. They will approach end-of-life decisions with greater clarity\, confidence\, and compassion. \n \nLara N. Dotson-Renta\, PhD is a longtime writer\, educator and scholar of languages (Spanish and French). She is also a 500hr RYT yoga instructor with trauma informed yoga training through The Veteran’s Yoga Project and children’s yoga training from Full of Joy Yoga in CT. She is also a trained death doula through INELDA (The International End of Life Doula Association). DESCRIPTION:Anyone who has ever participated in a brainstorming session knows that most of us do not lack ideas. Yet many people never breathe life into them. To turn inspiration into real achievement\, you must decide to act—and then decide to act again and again\, despite obstacles\, until your thoughts take shape and come to life. This is what psychologist Zorana Ivcevic Pringle\, Ph.D.\, calls the creativity choice. \nIn her new book The Creativity Choice: The Science of Making Decisions to Turn Ideas into Action\, Pringle—a senior research scientist at Yale University’s Center for Emotional Intelligence—draws on twenty years of research to dispel one of our most stubborn myths: that creativity is an innate gift reserved for the Albert Einsteins\, Steve Jobses\, and Coco Chanels of the world. In fact\, creativity is a decision. And it is one that anyone can learn to make. \nWith stories ranging from an entrepreneur who built a national nonprofit\, to a YouTuber who turned a hobby into a professional career\, to a business leader who established a company culture of innovation\, Pringle illuminates how people make creative ideas happen. She shows what it takes to get started\, the psychological and emotional tools needed to navigate the creative process\, and the social conditions that allow creativity to flourish—from the casual relationships that spark unexpected ideas\, to the close bonds that sustain risk-taking and perseverance. \nAmong her key insights: problem finding matters more than problem solving; emotions are not obstacles to creativity but valuable information that can be strategically harnessed; and the difference between a one-hit wonder and a consistent innovator often comes down to the quality of one’s social network. Pringle also explores why people who genuinely want to be creative so often avoid it\, and how accepting the anxiety that accompanies originality is itself the first creative act. \nPringle studies the role of emotion\, emotional intelligence\, and self-regulation in creativity and well-being\, as well as how to use the arts (and art-related institutions) to promote emotion and creativity skills. She will be in conversation with Marc Brackett\, Ph.D. (FAN ’19\, ’25)\, the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence\, a professor in the Child Study Center at Yale University\, and the author of the 2019 bestselling book Permission to Feel and 2025’s Dealing with Feeling. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. Options for both low-impact and high-impact movements allow everyone to customize their experience. \nEach class delivers an energizing workout that averages 4\,000 to 4\,200 steps\, with varying degrees of intensity. Esther integrates the Total Body Training (TBT) Systems Methodology to support proper posture and promote muscle conditioning. She also incorporates Peripheral Heart Action (PHA) Training\, offering an optional challenge that builds aerobic strength based on individual pace and rhythm. \nTo build coordination and balance\, the class includes inline motion drills. These are the dances you’ll see at weddings\, parties\, and dance halls all over. And now\, you’ll know them too. \nCome solo. Come with friends. Despite its slow pace\, it is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s class. \nHealth Benefits \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found it is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

The festival runs March 12–23\, 2026.\nThis year’s festival will screen films at three venues: the College of Lake County in Grayslake\, Gorton Center in Lake Forest\, and — for the first time — the Antioch Theater in Antioch\, expanding the festival’s footprint and access across Lake County. \nGorton Center is proud to be hosting the closing night feature film\, “All Skate”!\nALL SKATE is the full history of roller rinks and roller skating as told by a diverse group of people who are currently involved with roller skating and rinks\, and through my point of view having grown up in a roller rink built by my grandfather.​ \nWe cover everything from the early inline skating inventions\, the patented Plimpton four-wheel design which prevailed\, and then go though multiple phases of popularity including 1920s skaters including vaudeville performers and silent films\, professional roller sports\, the Skating Vanities\, the 40s/50s during and post WWII when we expanded to over 5000 mostly family-owned roller rinks in the US\, to the huge 1970s roller disco era\, the return of roller blades in the 80s.​ \nWe also visit the times of decline over the years\, especially since the 2000s\, and the reasons many rinks couldn’t survive\, visiting many former roller rinks to see what the buildings hold today\, including retail stores\, homeless shelters\, and a sad return to my family’s rink which is now an indoor shooting range. Cheryl has been teaching art for the past 30 years at many Chicago institutions\, including The Art Center of Highland Park\, The Evanston Art Center and Edgebrook Chicago Public School. She shows her fine art locally and around the world. In the summer of 2007\, Cheryl participated in Chicago’s ecologically-themed Public Art Project\, Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet. Her small globe was on exhibit at The United Nations\, NY and The Kennedy Center\, and was purchased by the “Clinton Initiative”. Rather than presenting the event through dramatic reenactments or graphic imagery\, Ishibumi focuses on memory\, testimony\, and the lasting weight of history. \nThe film is built around a simple but powerful structure. It documents the names and brief life details of people who died as a result of the bombing. These names are read aloud\, accompanied by still images of present-day Hiroshima. Streets\, rivers\, schools\, and ordinary buildings appear calm and unchanged\, yet they carry the invisible presence of those who once lived there. This contrast between peaceful modern scenery and the tragedy tied to it gives the film its emotional strength. \nKoreeda’s approach is restrained and respectful. He avoids sensationalism and instead allows silence\, repetition\, and careful pacing to guide the viewer.
