SUMMARY:Comedic Improv for Kids (Ages 9–14)
DESCRIPTION:Comedic Improv for Kids (Ages 9–14) \nIn this high-energy improv class\, students explore the fundamentals of comedic improvisation while building confidence\, creativity\, and teamwork. Through games and exercises\, kids learn how to think on their feet\, listen closely\, support their scene partners\, and use both physical expression and verbal communication to tell a story. \nEach week introduces new building blocks of improv; character creation\, quick thinking\, and the “yes\, and” mindset that helps scenes grow. Students practice working as an ensemble\, developing emotional intelligence\, and discovering how much fun it can be to collaborate on the spot. \nThe environment is supportive and low-pressure\, with plenty of room for silliness\, experimentation\, and individual growth. As the class progresses\, students will shape their favorite games and scenes into a short\, upbeat comedy show performed for family and friends on the final day. \nPerfect for beginners and returning improvisers alike\, this class helps young performers stretch their imaginations\, develop strong communication habits\, and experience the joy of making each other laugh. \n\nWednesdays\n9 Classes\nJanuary 14 to March 11\n4:30 pm to 6:30 pm\n$450\n\nInstructors: Jeremy Kruse\n \nJeremy Kruse\, acting teacher/director/Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio\, is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017). SUMMARY:Take Your Painting to the Next Level
DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your painting to the next level? \nThis class is ideal for artists who already have some experience painting in Oil\, Acrylic\, Gouache\, or Pastel and are ready to grow their skills further. If you’ve been wanting to turn a photo into a painting or have started a piece but feel unsure about how to move forward\, this is the perfect opportunity to get expert guidance and renewed inspiration. \nEach student brings in either a reference photo or an unfinished painting to work on during class. From there\, artist and instructor Michael Latala provides hands-on\, individualized instruction to help you make confident artistic decisions. First\, he’ll show you how to evaluate your photo reference—guiding you in choosing what elements to include and what to leave out. Then\, through clear demonstrations\, he’ll help you resolve common issues like washed-out highlights or areas that have gone too dark to read. \nThroughout the class\, Michael gives each student personal attention. If you’d prefer to keep your canvas untouched\, he’s happy to demonstrate his suggestions digitally using Procreate on his iPad Pro. This digital approach allows you to visualize changes before applying them\, which can be especially helpful when exploring different color choices or compositional edits. \nImportantly\, this class is all about progress at your own pace. There’s no pressure to finish quickly. Instead\, you’re encouraged to slow down\, focus on what you’re learning\, and enjoy the process. With consistent support and practice\, you’ll discover how to turn your ideas into beautiful\, well-executed paintings—just the way you imagined them. \nThis series is a total of 8 sessions\, all will be 7 – 9:30pm \n\nJanuary 15\nFebruary 18\nMarch 18

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Latin Jazz
DESCRIPTION:James Sanders & Conjunto\nJanuary doesn’t stand a chance against this heat. James Sanders & Conjunto are bringing the rhythms of Latin America straight to you\, and the result is pure electricity. \nSanders’ violin leads the charge\, weaving his classical roots into the pulse of jazz improvisation\, all carried by the irresistible grooves of the Caribbean. Think rumba\, son\, danzón\, bolero—music that keeps you swaying in your seat one moment and pulling you to the dance floor the next. Conjunto’s lineup is stacked: Kevin O’Connell on piano\, Jean-Christophe Leroy on drums and timbales\, Joe Rendon on congas\, José Porcayo on bass\, and Steve Eisen on reeds. Together\, they create a sound that moves between hushed intimacy and explosive joy. It’s Afro-roots\, salsa\, and jazz colliding in the best possible way. \n \nAnna Lentz – Printmaker\nAnd if the music brings the fire\, painter Anna Lentz brings the color. Her canvases burst with bold\, saturated hues that grab your attention from across the room\, then invite you closer to soak up the detail. Her work vibrates with energy\, making it an ideal pairing with Conjunto’s music and the perfect antidote to a gray winter. \nLatin rhythms\, fearless art\, and a night of joy you’ll feel long after it ends. January just got a whole lot hotter. \nAbout Rendezvous Arts\nWith unwavering passion and boundless creativity\, the devoted Board of Directors and staff at Rendezvous Arts lead the charge in fostering a harmonious community\, nurturing emerging talent\, and inspiring artistic excellence. Together\, we strive to be an organization that redefines the boundaries of artistic expression and brings the gift of music and art to all corners of the Chicago area. \nWe value diversity and inclusion. SUMMARY:HAIRSPRAY
DESCRIPTION:Hairspray is a lively musical set in 1962 Baltimore. It follows Tracy Turnblad\, a cheerful teenager with big dreams and a big heart. Tracy loves to dance\, and her talent lands her a spot on the local TV show\, “The Corny Collins Show.” Her rise to fame becomes more than entertainment—it sparks a fight for equality in a segregated society. \nTracy refuses to accept racial barriers. She uses her visibility to push for integration on the show. Along the way\, she faces ridicule\, resistance from authority\, and rival dancers. Despite these challenges\, she remains determined. Her courage inspires family\, friends\, and even strangers to stand up for what is right. \nThe film mixes humor\, romance\, and energetic musical numbers. Tracy’s relationship with her family\, especially her supportive mother Edna\, adds warmth and depth. She also navigates teenage crushes\, rivalries\, and personal growth while keeping her mission alive. \nHairspray celebrates individuality\, resilience\, and the power of one person to make a difference. It explores themes of acceptance\, body positivity\, and social change. Joy and determination help challenge prejudice. SUMMARY:Tai Chi
DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, it is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s class. \nHealth Benefits \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found it is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nIt is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. SUMMARY:Approaches to End of Life Care and Grief Seminar
DESCRIPTION:THIS SESSION HAS BEEN CANCELLED AND WILL BE RESCHEDULED. \nDiscussing Death\nDying Well sparks honest\, engaging conversations about death and dying. This seminar allows participants to examine how society talks about – and often avoids – the end of life. Other topics include gaps in our care systems and the definition and use of palliative and hospice care. \nYou will learn to navigate death as a unique\, personal process while acquiring tools to make meaningful end-of-life decisions. \nDying Well welcomes anyone ready to face mortality with clarity and courage. This includes those living with serious illness\, loved ones supporting someone at the end of life\, and anyone preparing their own care with intention. \nKey Questions We Will Explore\n\nHow can we navigate the death of a loved one with understanding and compassion? And how can we manage the emotions that follow?\nIn turn\, how might we envision and honor our own dying process?\nFurthermore\, what does a “good death” mean? How can we shape it to reflect our values?\nFinally\, how can we uphold what matters most – personally and culturally – as someone nears the end of life?\n\nThis seminar is not a therapy session. Instead\, it is a candid\, interactive discussion. We will examine the physical and emotional processes of dying. By creating a space for open exploration\, participants will leave feeling empowered. They will approach end-of-life decisions with greater clarity\, confidence\, and compassion. \n \nLara N. Dotson-Renta\, PhD is a longtime writer\, educator and scholar of languages (Spanish and French). SUMMARY:PARENTING ANXIETY: BREAKING THE CYCLE OF WORRY AND RAISING RESILIENT KIDS
DESCRIPTION:Parenting is hard—especially for families navigating anxiety. Today’s parents face an overwhelming volume of advice shaped by rigid cultural ideals of what “good” parenting looks like\, particularly when it comes to managing children’s fears and worries. How do you raise resilient children in an age of uncertainty? How do you parent effectively when you yourself are anxious? \nMuch of the advice parents encounter\, unfortunately\, encourages responses that can increase the long-term risk of anxiety in children. In trying to protect kids from discomfort\, well-intentioned parents may block experiences children need to build courage\, confidence\, and resilience. \nIn her new book Parenting Anxiety: Breaking the Cycle of Worry and Raising Resilient Kids\, Meredith Elkins\, Ph.D.\, a clinical psychologist and faculty member at Harvard Medical School\, brings clarity to this increasingly urgent conversation. Drawing on her clinical work with children and families—and her own experience as a parent—Dr. Elkins helps parents rethink so-called “negative” emotions such as fear\, sadness\, and guilt\, and understand how modern parenting pressures contribute to anxiety in both children and adults. She encourages families to clarify their values and adopt a “love and limits” approach—balancing compassion with healthy boundaries while resisting the urge to shield children from every discomfort. \nDr. Elkins offers concrete\, evidence-based guidance for families experiencing everyday anxiety as well as those coping with anxiety disorders. This indispensable resource provides a clear roadmap for helping both children and parents build adaptability\, emotional flexibility\, and resilience across all stages of development. \nDr. Elkins will be in conversation with Rebecca Jenkins\, superintendent of Libertyville D70 in Libertyville\, IL. Jenkins has presented about leadership at the National Conference on Education by the American Association of School Administrators\, the award-winning PowerTrip conference for women in education; at the Illinois Association for Superintendents; and with Google at the ASU+GSV summit\, a global meeting for leaders in education\, technology\, and workforce development. \nBonus After-Hours Event: FAN donors are invited to attend a private After-Hours event hosted by Elkins that will start immediately after the webinar. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.
