DESCRIPTION:This fun workshop is designed to help students get hands-on with 3D printers. They will get an in-depth introduction and usage experience with 3D printing. They will get to design basic shapes using Tinkercad\, learn to use slicing software\, upload to a printer\, and print the shapes they design. Ages 8 – 12 years old. \nSTUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED (BUT NOT REQUIRED) TO BRING THEIR OWN LAPTOP OR IPAD! \nThis 2-day workshop runs on Saturday\, September 21 and 28\, 9am – 12pm \nDr. Jayant Joshi holds a PhD in Materials Science and has been a passionate proponent of the 3D printing industry. Cynical thinking deepens social problems: when we expect the worst in people\, we often bring it out of them. \nWe don’t have to remain stuck in this cynicism trap. Through science and storytelling\, Jamil Zaki\, Ph.D. (FAN ’19)\, director of the Stanford Social Neuroscience Laboratory and author of the new book Hope for Cynics: The Surprising Science of Human Goodness\, imparts the secret for beating back cynicism: hopeful skepticism—thinking critically about people and our problems\, while honoring and encouraging our strengths. DESCRIPTION:America runs on women—women who are tasked with holding society together at the seams and fixing it when things fall apart. In this tour de force\, acclaimed sociologist Jessica Calarco\, Ph.D. lays bare the devastating consequences of our status quo. \nHolding it Together: How Women Became America’s Social Safety Net draws on five years of research in which Calarco\, a sociologist and associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, surveyed over 4\,000 parents and conducted more than 400 hours of interviews with women who bear the brunt of our broken system. Tracing present-day policies back to their roots\, Calarco reveals a systematic agreement to dismantle our country’s social safety net and persuade citizens to accept precarity while women bear the brunt. She leads us to see women’s labor as the reason we’ve gone so long without the support systems that our peer nations take for granted\, and how women’s work maintains the illusion that we don’t need a net. \nCalarco’s research focuses on education\, families\, and health decision-making. She is interested in the structures of power and privilege that maintain socioeconomic\, racial\, and gender inequalities in these settings\, as well as the role that qualitative methods can play in uncovering these mechanisms. \nCalarco will be in conversation with Heidi Stevens\, Director of External Affairs for the University of Chicago’s TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health\, and creative director for Parent Nation\, an initiative of the TMW Center. Prior to joining TMW\, Stevens worked at the Chicago Tribune for 23 years\, where she wrote a daily column called “Balancing Act.” She maintains a weekly nationally syndicated column. In 1979\, she became a freelance illustrator\, also working on commissioned pieces and producing audio-visual shows\, cartooning and fashion illustration. Cheryl has been teaching art for the past 30 years at many Chicago institutions\, including The Art Center of Highland Park\, The Evanston Art Center and Edgebrook Chicago Public School. She shows her fine art locally and around the world. In the summer of 2007\, Cheryl participated in Chicago’s ecologically-themed Public Art Project\, Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet. Her small globe was on exhibit at The United Nations\, NY and The Kennedy Center\, and was purchased by the “Clinton Initiative”. DESCRIPTION:Sound bath meditation is a practice that involves immersing oneself in soothing and harmonic sounds to promote relaxation\, deep meditation\, and overall well-being. For grades K – 3rd \nCarole Pearlman’s lifelong fascination with creativity began as a child\, in a neighborhood art class\, where making art in the backyard was the only agenda for an entire summer. Many art classes later Carole completed a BFA in painting\, a MEd in Educational Therapy\, and an MA in Developmental Psychology. Integrating the disciplines of art\, education\, and psychology Carole developed The Joy of Creativity Art program. Carole works as a facilitator of creativity with students ages 4 to 84! Through her teaching\, research\, and daily practice\, she believes that being creative is an essential part of a balanced life. Carole is a professional artist and certified teacher.

From the effects of social media to the uncertainty of AI and the consequences of climate change\, the outcomes of our creations ripple across our lives\, and we are now at a critical moment where we must consider: What does a thriving future look like? How could we design it thoughtfully and creatively if we were tasked with doing so? The book is poised to redefine the discourse on design and innovation\, offering a roadmap for creating a future that we can all proudly inhabit. \nAssembling Tomorrow is the highly anticipated capstone for a 12-book series on design from Stanford’s d.school. Over the past few years\, FAN has hosted events in support of d.school books Creative Acts for Curious People\, You Need a Manifesto and Design for Belonging. \nCo-authors Carter\, a designer\, geoscientist\, and the academic director at the d.school\, and Doorley\, a writer\, designer\, and the creative director at the d.school\, will be in conversation with Liz Gerber\, Ph.D. (FAN ’13\, ’16)\, a professor of mechanical engineering at Northwestern University\, co-director of Northwestern’s Center for Human Computer Interaction + Design\, and faculty founder of Design for America. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It is a monthly storytelling open mic in an enthusiastic\, supportive environment free from pressure\, judgment\, or scoring. No experience is necessary to participate. All are welcome to speak or simply listen. Arrive at 7:15 to sign up for a spot\, and when your name is called\, participants will have up to 7 minutes to tell/read/tap dance any personal story/fiction/essay on proper flossing they’d like. All language and content is acceptable except for hate speech. No cover charge. Beer\, wine and non alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Hosted by Jasmin Rodriguez\, Suzie Garfield & Lisa Parr \nAbout Your Host: \n  \n \nJasmin Rodriguez is a trained actress with over 9 years of stage\, commercial\, film\, storytelling experience. Most recently she completed commercial’s  for Malman Law and Spirit Juice. She has worked  in several independent films\, such as “Faithful Disappointment’s”\, Market Value” and the TV true crime series “American Greed”. She completed her training at Second City\, Vagabond\, Sarantos Studios\, Wheaton Drama\, and Gorton Drama Studio. Jasmin is a dedicated actress and hard worker who is constantly looking to improve her talents. She enjoys nature walks by the lake\, bike riding\, yoga and travels to Europe.   \n\n  \n\n \nSuzie Garfield expects everyone to have stories (not just a story) to tell. As for her own background: She’s raised her 2 sons to adulthood. She’s programmed computers\, managed business projects\, learned as much as she could about other stuff\, taught as much of it as she could get to interest other people\, and always—always—told the stories about any and all of it. Now\, as a retiree from the conventional workforce\, an empty nester\, a consumer of food\, opera\, theater\, museums\, the visual arts\, and miscellaneous other adventures\, and a perpetual storyteller\, she keeps looking for and finding the next challenge\, the next thing to learn\, do\, and teach\, and the next story. \n\n  \n\n \nAfter teaching studio art and art history in high school and colleges\, Lisa Parr opened and still runs her business internationally restoring Historic Landmark antique carousels\, speaking and writing articles on them and her specialty of original paint. Additional application of her skills is for legal work\, court verifying and identifying carousel figures for insurance\, damage\, and theft for private collectors\, as well as appraisals for museums\, art dealers\, and auctions. In connection with carousel art\, Lisa pursues research in early Celtic design and mythology on site in the upper isles of Scotland. Many early Celtic and pre-Christian designs are reproduced on carousels and carousel animals. Her interest in ancient and contemporary mythology has led her to research mountain storytelling\, initiating more travel and recent storytelling\, herself. Lisa has been telling Highland Park\, Lake Forest\, and several venues in Chicago. For fun\, Lisa also restores antique wood toys and sports cars\, which she drives with vigor and nostalgia.​ \n

The program will feature works for string trio and solo guitar – and all four musicians will combine forces as a quartet.   \nThese internationally touring musicians will leave you breathless with their energy\, creativity\, and captivating personalities that shine through in every note. \nThe Black Oak Ensemble consists of violinist Desirée Ruhstrat and cellist David Cunliffe\, members of the Grammy-nominated Lincoln Trio\, and violist Aurélien Fort Pederzoli\, a founding member of the ground-breaking\, Grammy-nominated Spektral Quartet. They are currently an ensemble-in-residence at New Music School in Chicago. \n  \nJoin us for a special exhibition by photographer Elliot Mandel! While you might recognize his work from concert halls around the world\, capturing stunning images for promos and album covers\, Elliot also possesses a remarkable talent for capturing the beauty of nature\, cityscapes\, and skylines. He’s as excited to share his art photography with our audiences as we are to have him!\n \nElliot Mandel is a Chicago-based photographer specializing in live music performance\, artist portraiture\, events\, and editorial projects. His passion for music began in childhood with cello lessons and school orchestras and has led to a robust clientele that includes many of Chicago’s finest ensembles\, Grammy-winning and nominated artists\, elite concert presenters\, universities\, and non-profit organizations.   \nHis photos have appeared as album artwork for the Cedille\, Naxos\, Sono Luminus\, and Okeh record labels\, and in Gramophone Magazine\, Sports Illustrated\, the Wall Street Journal\, the Chicago Tribune\, the Chicago Sun-Times\, and Chicago Magazine.
