SUMMARY:Tai Chi With Ken Ning
DESCRIPTION:Sign up for Gorton’s Tai Chi class and join Ken Ning each Saturday to learn and practice Tai Chi. Ken’s Tai Chi class is open to both beginners and experienced practitioners. \nTai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, Tai Chi is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits of Tai Chi below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s Tai Chi class. \nHealth Benefits of Tai Chi \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found Tai Chi is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s Tai Chi class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nTai Chi is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

SUMMARY:Bridge for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:THIS CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELLED.\nBridge is a popular trick-taking card game that is played by four players in two partnerships. We will have lots of play with a few lectures. Materials included.\n \nPlease reach out to Instructor Ginny Schuett to register: jgschuett2@nullcomcast.net or 847-940-7236\nContact Libby Johnson with any issues – Libby@nullgortoncenter.org \n

SUMMARY:FAN: Random Acts of Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Why do kids born in the summer get diagnosed more often with ADHD and the flu? How are marathons harmful to your health\, even when you’re not running? What do surgeons and salesmen have in common? Which annual event made people 30 percent more likely to get COVID-19? As a University of Chicago-trained economist and Harvard medical school professor and doctor\, Anupam Bapu Jena\, MD\, Ph.D. is uniquely equipped to answer these questions. \n \nIn Random Acts of Medicine: The Hidden Forces That Sway Doctors\, Impact Patients\, and Shape Our Health\, Dr. Jena and his co-author Christopher Worsham\, MD show us how medicine really works and its effect on all of us. In the spirit of Freakonomics and Noise\, this singular work combines popular topics like behavioral science\, health\, and medicine through the lens of economic principles and big data insights to reveal the unexpected but predictable events that profoundly affect our health. Relying on ingeniously devised natural experiments—random events that unknowingly turn us into experimental subjects—the authors help us gain a better understanding of how medicine is practiced and how it could work better. \nDr. Jena is the Joseph P. Newhouse Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School and a physician in the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. As an economist and physician\, Dr. Jena’s research involves several areas of health economics and policy including the use of natural experiments in health care\, the economics of physician behavior and the physician workforce\, medical malpractice\, the economics of health care productivity\, and the economics of medical innovation. \nDr. Jena will be in conversation with award-winning journalist Robert Kolker\, the author of several bestsellers\, among them Hidden Valley Road\, an instant #1 New York Times bestseller and a selection of Oprah’s Book Club that was named a Top Ten Book of the Year by the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, the Wall Street Journal\, and Slate. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.\n \nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY! We are giving away copies of Random Acts of Medicine to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nAnupam Bapu Jena\, MD\, Ph.D. Joseph P. Newhouse Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School and host of the “Freakonomics\, MD” podcast \nRobert Kolker Journalist and bestselling author of “Hidden Valley Road” and “Lost Girls” \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:RENTAL EVENT: "Boycott" Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for a Screening of Boycott Presented by Lake Forest College\nA screening of Just Vision’s latest documentary\, Boycott\, with Lake Forest College followed by a discussion with Suhad Babaa\, Just Vision’s President and Executive Director and the film’s Producer\, and Brian Hauss\, staff attorney at the ACLU Speech\, Privacy\, and Technology Project and Boycott protagonist. \nBoycott follows the stories of a news publisher in Arkansas\, an attorney in Arizona\, and a speech therapist in Texas\, who\, when forced to choose between their jobs and their political beliefs\, launch legal battles that expose an attack on freedom of speech across the US. The film traces the impact of state legislation passed in 36 states – including Illinois – designed to penalize individuals and companies that choose to boycott Israel due to its human rights record. A legal thriller with “accidental plaintiffs” at the center of the story\, Boycott is a bracing look at the far-reaching implications of anti-boycott legislation and an inspiring tale of everyday Americans standing up to protect our rights in an age of shifting politics and threats to freedom of speech. \nWhile the original anti-boycott laws passed with wide bi-partisan support\, beginning in 2021\, conservative legislators began to introduce copycat bills inspired by the Israel-focused anti-boycott bills\, taking aim at boycotts of the fossil fuels and firearms industries. Most recently\, legislators modified the bill once more to target those organizing for transgender peoples’ rights\, abortion access\, and workplace equity. Since the start of the year\, over 40 copycat bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the country. We hope you’ll join this event to learn more about these laws and their wider implications on our right to voice dissent in America.
