SUMMARY:Turning Teen: Body Basics for Girls
DESCRIPTION:Turning Teen is here for #GirlMoms\, #GirlDads\, and any other trusted adult in a young person’s life. We know it can be hard to talk with a girl about puberty. Or sexual or mental health. And other issues relating to her body. After all\, many of our parents found it hard\, too. Some of us never learned how to discuss – without secrecy\, embarrassment\, or worse\, shame – what it means to turn into a teen. \nWe can fix that. Turning Teen has the support and guidance you need. Interactive classes and workshops\, offered in person or online\, provide age-appropriate\, medically accurate information in an engaging and fun setting. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn about female anatomy\, puberty\, body changes\, body safety\, and more! Turning Teen offers interactive pediatrician-developed educational workshops that are fun\, modern\, and medically accurate! \nFor girls 8+ (who haven’t started puberty yet or are in the early stages) and their parent/trusted adult. \nTurning Teen\, founded by Dr. Lisa Klein and Dr. Carrie Leff\, helps families talk openly about puberty\, bodies\, and sex. Our programs\, led by medical and mental health professionals\, provide accurate\, age-appropriate information to make these conversations more comfortable for kids and their caregivers.   \nDr. Jessica Reggi is Chicagoland’s Turning Teen board-certified pediatrician. She practiced clinical pediatrics throughout Chicago for about eight years before transitioning to nonprofit leadership. She is passionate about the intersection of health and education and has facilitated trainings about vaccines\, vaping\, and more for school districts\, community organizations\, and health champions across the country.

SUMMARY:Tai Chi
DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, it is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s class. \nHealth Benefits \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found it is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nIt is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

SUMMARY:Take Your Painting to the Next Level
DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your painting to the next level?\nThis class is ideal for artists who already have some experience painting in Oil\, Acrylic\, Gouache\, or Pastel and are ready to grow their skills further. If you’ve been wanting to turn a photo into a painting or have started a piece but feel unsure about how to move forward\, this is the perfect opportunity to get expert guidance and renewed inspiration. \nEach student brings in either a reference photo or an unfinished painting to work on during class. From there\, artist and instructor Michael Latala provides hands-on\, individualized instruction to help you make confident artistic decisions. First\, he’ll show you how to evaluate your photo reference—guiding you in choosing what elements to include and what to leave out. Then\, through clear demonstrations\, he’ll help you resolve common issues like washed-out highlights or areas that have gone too dark to read. \nThroughout the class\, Michael gives each student personal attention. If you’d prefer to keep your canvas untouched\, he’s happy to demonstrate his suggestions digitally using Procreate on his iPad Pro. This digital approach allows you to visualize changes before applying them\, which can be especially helpful when exploring different color choices or compositional edits. \nImportantly\, this class is all about progress at your own pace. There’s no pressure to finish quickly. Instead\, you’re encouraged to slow down\, focus on what you’re learning\, and enjoy the process. With consistent support and practice\, you’ll discover how to turn your ideas into beautiful\, well-executed paintings—just the way you imagined them. \nThis series runs on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month: \n\nMay 14 & 28\nJune 11 & 25\nJuly 9 & 23\nAugust 13 & 27

SUMMARY:THE NATURAL
DESCRIPTION:The Natural is a classic American sports film that mixes baseball with myth\, fate\, and redemption. The story centers on Roy Hobbs\, a quiet\, middle-aged man who suddenly joins a struggling Major League Baseball team. With no public history and no explanation for his arrival\, Roy immediately stands out. Once he steps onto the field\, his rare ability becomes impossible to ignore. \nRoy hits the ball farther and harder than anyone else. He plays with confidence and instinct\, turning heads and changing the team’s fortunes almost overnight. Fans cheer him\, teammates depend on him\, and opponents fear him. His handmade bat\, “Wonderboy\,” becomes a powerful symbol of his identity and his purpose\, linking his success to something larger than skill alone. \nThe film gradually reveals that Roy’s story did not begin late in life. Years earlier\, he showed the same promise as a young prodigy\, only to have his career violently cut short. Now older and carrying emotional scars\, Roy fights for a second chance. Age\, temptation\, and outside pressure test his focus and threaten to derail him again. \nBeyond the game\, The Natural explores ambition\, integrity\, and the true meaning of heroism. Roy must choose between selfish glory and playing for something greater than himself. His decisions shape not only his future\, but the fate of the team that believes in him. \nStylized visuals and dramatic moments give baseball a mythic quality. Every game feels larger than life. At its core\, The Natural tells a story about redemption and belief. It argues that talent alone does not make a hero. Character does. And even when time runs short\, a second chance can still lead to greatness. \nDirector: Barry Levinson \nStars: Robert Redford\, Robert Duvall\, Glenn Close

SUMMARY:A Talk with Hometown Author Laura Munson
DESCRIPTION:An Author’s Homecoming\nNew York Times\, USA Today\, and international bestselling author Laura Munson returns to Gorton Center. A native Lake Forester\, she’s celebrating the release of her newest book\, The Wild Why: Stories and Teachings to Uncover Your Wonder. \nA Maria Shriver’s Sunday Paper Pick\, The Wild Why leans into wonder. Readers praise it for helping uncover an authentic voice and opening the door to beauty and self-expression. \nThis is a free event- please register!  Day of walk ins welcome!\nWhat is Wonder?\nWonder is curiosity and awe combined. It is the instinct we are born with\, the urge to ask why\, how\, and what if. It’s the feeling behind a child’s amazement at a rainbow\, and the deeper questions that follow. Wonder is not a luxury; it is essential to how we grow\, create\, and connect. SUMMARY:Teen Draw & Paint with Joalida Smit
DESCRIPTION:Sign Up Your Teen to Draw & Paint with Joalida\nCome hang out in a space where creativity comes alive. Artist and educator Joalida Smit invites teens to join her ongoing art class at the Gorton Center. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, Joalida’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, Joalida gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Because of this\, every class feels fresh and exciting. \nAnd here’s the best part: the goal isn’t to finish identical projects. Instead\, the focus is on exploration\, creativity\, and storytelling. Students learn how to express themselves\, share their ideas\, and bring imagination to life. As a result\, they walk away with more than just artwork. They leave with stronger skills\, bigger confidence\, and a deeper connection to their creativity. \nFinally\, this class gives teens a safe\, supportive space to take risks\, try new things\, and grow as artists. Step by step\, they discover the joy of creating something that’s truly their own. \nSo\, why not join Joalida in the studio? It’s a place where individuality is celebrated\, creativity flows\, and every teen has a chance to shine. \nAll materials are provided\, so students can fully immerse themselves in the process without the need to bring supplies. Ages: 11 – 17 \nSkill Level: Intermediate to advanced – Prior art experience and a sincere interest in art are required. \nNote: This is an art development class\, not a recreational after-school club. Students are expected to take their art practice seriously and to respect the shared studio space. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

SUMMARY:BORN TO FLOURISH: HOW NEW SCIENCE AND ANCIENT WISDOM REVEAL A SIMPLE PATH TO THRIVING
DESCRIPTION:Richard J. Davidson\, Ph.D.\, and Cortland Dahl\, Ph.D.\, are among the world’s foremost neuroscientists and contemplative teachers. In Born to Flourish: How New Science and Ancient Wisdom Reveal a Simple Path to Thriving\, they draw on decades of research from the Center for Healthy Minds and the non-profit Humin to offer something rare: a program that is both scientifically grounded and immediately livable. \nThe book is built around four practices — Awareness\, Connection\, Insight\, and Purpose — that together train the brain to move from stress and anxiety toward clarity and calm. Awareness invites full presence with our emotions\, allowing us to meet life’s inevitable ups and downs with steadiness rather than reactivity. Connection cultivates kindness and appreciation\, deepening relationships and a sense of belonging. Insight draws on self-inquiry to loosen the grip of old narratives. Purpose anchors us in core values\, sharpening the judgment we need to make sound decisions. \nWe are born with a natural capacity to flourish — but capacity requires cultivation. The encouraging finding from Davidson and Dahl’s research is that just a few minutes of daily practice produces measurable change. Born to Flourish makes that practice accessible wherever life finds you: commuting\, doing chores\, lying in bed. For anyone navigating depression\, despair\, or loneliness\, or simply seeking more from their mental and emotional life\, the book offers a clear and actionable way forward. \nDavidson is the William James and Vilas Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison the founder and director of the Center for Healthy Minds and of the nonprofit Humin. Dahl is a research scientist at the Center and the Chief Contemplative Officer at Humin. \nDavidson and Dahl will be in conversation with Jacqueline Moreno\, Chief Service Officer of the Illinois Student Assistance Commission\, overseeing the agency’s public-facing direct service work with students\, families\, schools\, colleges\, and partner organizations across Illinois. \nBonus Book Giveaway: FAN is giving away copies of Born to Flourish to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:ISHIBUMI
DESCRIPTION:Ishibumi is a quiet and reflective film about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and the lives forever changed by it. Directed by Hirokazu Koreeda\, the film is a reworking of a 1969 television program originally produced by Hiroshima Television. Rather than presenting the event through dramatic reenactments or graphic imagery\, Ishibumi focuses on memory\, testimony\, and the lasting weight of history. \nThe film is built around a simple but powerful structure. It documents the names and brief life details of people who died as a result of the bombing. These names are read aloud\, accompanied by still images of present-day Hiroshima. Streets\, rivers\, schools\, and ordinary buildings appear calm and unchanged\, yet they carry the invisible presence of those who once lived there. This contrast between peaceful modern scenery and the tragedy tied to it gives the film its emotional strength. \nKoreeda’s approach is restrained and respectful. He avoids sensationalism and instead allows silence\, repetition\, and careful pacing to guide the viewer. By focusing on individuals rather than statistics\, Ishibumi restores a sense of humanity to an event often discussed only in large numbers. Each name represents a personal story\, a family\, and a future that was lost. \nAs a remake\, the film also raises questions about remembrance and responsibility. Koreeda preserves the spirit of the original program while bringing it to a new generation. He emphasizes the importance of listening\, remembering\, and acknowledging the past without turning it into spectacle. \nIshibumi is not an easy film\, but it is a meaningful one. It serves as both a memorial and a reminder\, asking viewers to reflect on the consequences of war and the importance of preserving historical memory. Through its simplicity\, the film delivers a powerful and lasting impact. \nDirector: Hirokazu Koreeda \nStars: Haruka Ayase\, Akira Ikegami

SUMMARY:Comedic Improv for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Comedic Improv for Kids \nIn this high-energy improv class\, students explore the fundamentals of comedic improvisation while building confidence\, creativity\, and teamwork. Through games and exercises\, kids learn how to think on their feet\, listen closely\, support their scene partners\, and use both physical expression and verbal communication to tell a story. \nEach week introduces new building blocks of improv; character creation\, quick thinking\, and the “yes\, and” mindset that helps scenes grow. Students practice working as an ensemble\, developing emotional intelligence\, and discovering how much fun it can be to collaborate on the spot. \nThe environment is supportive and low-pressure\, with plenty of room for silliness\, experimentation\, and individual growth. As the class progresses\, students will shape their favorite games and scenes into a short\, upbeat comedy show performed for family and friends on the final day. \nPerfect for beginners and returning improvisers alike\, this class helps young performers stretch their imaginations\, develop strong communication habits\, and experience the joy of making each other laugh. \n\nWednesdays\n8 Classes\n\nApril 1 to May 20\n\nAges 9 to 14\n\n4:30 pm to 6:30 pm\n\n$400\n\nInstructors: Jeremy Kruse\n \nJeremy Kruse\, acting teacher/director/Artistic Director of Gorton Drama Studio\, is the author of “The Young Actor’s Handbook” (Applause Acting Series\, 2017). SUMMARY:After School Art Club with Lezlie
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a budding artist in the family? Give their creativity room to grow in this engaging after-school art class designed specifically for students in Grades 1–4! \nEach class is thoughtfully structured to balance artistic freedom with meaningful learning. We begin with a free-draw session\, allowing students time to warm up\, express themselves\, and get their creative energy flowing. From there\, we dive into the world of art history by introducing an “Artist of the Day”—a renowned or influential figure whose work provides the inspiration for that day’s project. \nStudents will explore various artistic movements\, mediums\, and styles from around the world\, helping them gain a broader understanding of art and its cultural significance. With guidance and encouragement\, they’ll create their own artwork inspired by the featured artist\, putting their personal spin on classic techniques while developing new skills and confidence. \nThe class wraps up with group clean-up\, an age-appropriate art discussion that encourages observation and expression\, and a fun “draw-a-long” activity to reinforce what they’ve learned in a playful and supportive way. \nMore than just an art class\, this is a space where young artists can explore\, reflect\, and connect with the wider world through creativity. It’s a perfect opportunity for self-expression\, experimentation\, and cultivating a lifelong appreciation for the arts and global perspectives.
