SUMMARY:Tai Chi
DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, it is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s class. \nHealth Benefits \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found it is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nIt is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

SUMMARY:Accelerated Reiki
DESCRIPTION:Reiki Accelerated Class 1 and 2 \nDiscover the Healing Power of Reiki\nReiki is a Japanese energy healing practice that supports physical\, emotional\, and mental balance. It uses gentle touch to channel universal life energy into the body\, helping to promote relaxation and reduce stress. The word Rei means “universal life\,” and Ki means “energy\,” so Reiki literally translates to Universal Life Force Energy. \nThis holistic practice is based on the belief that all living things are sustained by a vital life force. When this energy flows freely\, the body can maintain health and balance. Through Reiki\, practitioners aim to restore this flow\, facilitating healing at physical\, emotional\, and spiritual levels. \nUsing the practitioner’s hands\, Reiki energy is transferred to the recipient\, calming the nervous system and enhancing overall well-being. Many find it to be a deeply soothing and grounding experience. \nWhat You’ll Learn in Our Accelerated Reiki Class\nOur Accelerated Reiki Class is open to everyone and includes both Reiki Level I and Level II certifications. In this course\, participants will: \n\nLearn the core Reiki symbols and their meanings\nReceive clear\, step-by-step instruction from an experienced teacher\nGain hands-on practice with energy work\nEarn a Reiki II certificate upon completion\n\nYou’ll leave the class with the knowledge and confidence to practice Reiki on yourself\, others\, and even animals. \nMeet Your Instructor: Melissa MacTaggart\nMelissa MacTaggart is a certified Reiki Master Teacher who has trained in the Usui method—the oldest form of Reiki. She studied at Zaanti Reiki and Sat Nam Yoga in Chicago\, and founded Blossom and Bee Reiki in 2018. \nMelissa has led Reiki workshops in both Los Angeles and Chicago. Her passion for energy healing began in her teenage years\, sparking a lifelong journey into the mind-body connection. Today\, she considers Reiki her most beloved modality because of its transformative\, radiant power. \nHer mission is to help others discover peace and balance through energy work. Melissa’s mantra is\, “Let’s move energy together.”

SUMMARY:Beginner Graphite Pencil Art
DESCRIPTION:Fundamentals of Pencil Drawing: From Observation to Finished Work\nThis course is a clear and approachable introduction to pencil drawing. It is designed for beginners\, but it also supports artists who want to refresh and strengthen their skills. Pencil drawing is both accessible and expressive. Through this class\, you will gain confidence and learn techniques to create drawings that feel realistic and engaging. \nEach session has two main parts. First\, you will practice drawing what you see. To do this\, we will use observational exercises\, often with simple still life setups. Step by step\, you’ll train your eye to notice shapes\, proportions\, light\, and shadow more accurately. \nNext\, you will move from practice into a finished drawing. In this second part\, you’ll learn how to plan a composition\, layer shading\, and add detail and texture. These steps will help bring your artwork to life. \nAs the course continues\, you will build a strong foundation. You’ll grow more comfortable with line\, form\, value\, and perspective – the essential elements of drawing. \nExperienced Artists Welcome\nIf you already have some experience\, you can join too. You’ll have the option to focus on a personal project or rendering. Along the way\, I’ll give you individual feedback and guidance. This support will help refine your technique and strengthen your creative vision. \nIn short\, this class offers structure\, practice\, and encouragement. Whether you are brand new to drawing or ready to sharpen your skills\, you’ll find a welcoming space to grow as an artist. \nSUPPLIES TO BE PURCHASED BY THE PARTICIPANT: – Can be order thru Blicks Art Supply\, Amazon\, etc.\n9 x 12 Drawing Paper* \n9 x 12 or larger sketchbook \nDrawing pencil set (range 6B-4H) \nKneaded Eraser \nSet of blending stumps \n12” Ruler \n \nPhilip Schorn – P Schorn Studio – Botanical Color Pencil Artist His botanical renderings are not scientific studies of plant specimens. They are artistic interpretations of plants. He notices shapes\, light\, and shadows in the ground around him. He often focuses on a single detail – an individual leaf\, a flower\, or a small fragment of earth. In this way\, he brings those details to life. He has worked with colored pencil for several years and has taught the art for the past three. \nPhilip is currently teaching online from his home since March. He teaches online color pencil classes for other art studios/galleries\, private classes and Facebook demos. He has published two books featuring his art and techniques and has done a number of outdoor shows\, group and individual exhibitions. \nPhilip’s process of making a rendering with the detail that he wants to have requires a significant amount of time. Sometimes he uses other media\, such as ink\, watercolors or pastels.\n Philip is a member of the Color Pencil Society of America\, Grayslake Arts Alliance and the Lake County Art League. His studio is located in Grayslake. \nEmail: phil@nullpschornstudio.com   FB: pschornstudio/

SUMMARY:FAN: Dream School - Finding the College That's Right for You
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Selingo on Rethinking the College Admissions Journey\nJoin us for an evening with Family Action Network and Jeff Selingo\, author of Dream School: Finding the College That’s Right for You. In conversation with Dr. Matthew Montgomery\, superintendent of Lake Forest Schools Districts 67 and 115\, Jeff will share insights from his survey of more than 3\,000 parents. He offers a fresh perspective that helps families rethink the college search. \nFor decades\, college has been a rite of passage and a cornerstone of the American dream. Yet today\, the process feels broken. Even top students face rejection. Families struggle under financial strain. In Dream School\, Selingo shifts the focus. Instead of asking how colleges pick students\, he asks how students can pick colleges more wisely. \nThe landscape has changed. Test-optional policies and grade inflation make admissions less predictable. Getting into an elite school often feels like a lottery. Plan A may succeed\, but more often it doesn’t. Jeff urges families to move past the “Top 25 or bust” mindset. Instead\, he points to hidden-gem schools with high value and rich opportunities. \nUncovering What Really Matters\nHis findings are backed by research and reinforced by thousands of parent voices. Dream School uncovers what truly matters in higher education. Job prospects. Hands-on learning. A strong sense of belonging. To guide students\, Jeff spotlights 75 accessible and affordable colleges that meet these priorities. \nThe book is organized into three clear sections. First\, it explains why an elite degree often matters less than people assume. Second\, it shows why families increasingly value affordability and opportunity over prestige. Third\, it teaches how to ensure that a degree delivers real returns. \nThis conversation will challenge assumptions and open doors. Join us to discover how to find the college that’s right for you. \n  \n \nJeff Selingo has written about colleges and universities for more than two and a half decades and\nis a New York Times bestselling author of three books. His latest book\, Who Gets In & Why: A\nYear Inside College Admissions\, takes readers inside the admissions offices of three selective\nuniversities and was named among the 100 Notable Books of the year by the New York Times.\nHis next book\, Dream School: Finding The College That’s Right For You\, is based on two-plus\nyears of research and an original survey of 3\,500 parents.\nA regular contributor to The Atlantic\, New York Times\, and Wall Street Journal\, Jeff is a special\nadvisor to the president and professor of practice at Arizona State University. He also writes a bi-\nweekly newsletter on all things higher ed called Next and co-hosts the podcast\, Future U. He\nlives near Washington\, DC with his family. \n\nDr. Matthew L. Montgomery serves as Superintendent of Lake Forest Community High School District 115 and Lake Forest Elementary School District 67\, overseeing the effective operation\, educational programs\, and fiscal management of both districts. His career began as a high school science teacher in Canfield\, Ohio\, followed by leadership roles as principal at Waterloo Middle and High Schools\, and later Superintendent of Waterloo Local School District. He then led Revere Local School District in Bath\, Ohio\, where he implemented a five-year strategic plan\, advanced community engagement\, managed $70 million in capital improvements\, and elevated district performance. Since joining the Lake Forest districts in 2021\, Dr. Montgomery has guided the development of the Portrait of a Learner\, new strategic plans\, and a successful $105.7 million referendum. Nationally\, he serves as Lead Superintendent for Cohort and Partner Connections with AASA and Co-Chair of the AASA STEM Leadership Consortium. He also contributes to several professional organizations and serves on the Superintendent Advisory Board for JASON Learning. Dr. Montgomery holds a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Kent State University and resides in Lake Forest with his wife\, Blayna\, and their four children.

SUMMARY:After School Art Club with Lezlie
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a budding artist in the family? Give their creativity room to grow in this engaging after-school art class designed specifically for students in Grades 1–4! \nEach class is thoughtfully structured to balance artistic freedom with meaningful learning. We begin with a free-draw session\, allowing students time to warm up\, express themselves\, and get their creative energy flowing. From there\, we dive into the world of art history by introducing an “Artist of the Day”—a renowned or influential figure whose work provides the inspiration for that day’s project. \nStudents will explore various artistic movements\, mediums\, and styles from around the world\, helping them gain a broader understanding of art and its cultural significance. With guidance and encouragement\, they’ll create their own artwork inspired by the featured artist\, putting their personal spin on classic techniques while developing new skills and confidence. \nThe class wraps up with group clean-up\, an age-appropriate art discussion that encourages observation and expression\, and a fun “draw-a-long” activity to reinforce what they’ve learned in a playful and supportive way. \nMore than just an art class\, this is a space where young artists can explore\, reflect\, and connect with the wider world through creativity. It’s a perfect opportunity for self-expression\, experimentation\, and cultivating a lifelong appreciation for the arts and global perspectives.

SUMMARY:Teen Draw & Paint with Joalida Smit
DESCRIPTION:Draw & Paint with Joalida\nPlease Note DATES –  \n\nWednesday\, November 5\nWednesday\, November 12\nTuesday\, November 18\nTuesday\, November 25\n\nCome hang out in a space where creativity comes alive. Artist and educator Joalida Smit invites teens to join her ongoing art class at the Gorton Center. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, Joalida’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, Joalida gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Because of this\, every class feels fresh and exciting. \nAnd here’s the best part: the goal isn’t to finish identical projects. Instead\, the focus is on exploration\, creativity\, and storytelling. Students learn how to express themselves\, share their ideas\, and bring imagination to life. As a result\, they walk away with more than just artwork. They leave with stronger skills\, bigger confidence\, and a deeper connection to their creativity. \nFinally\, this class gives teens a safe\, supportive space to take risks\, try new things\, and grow as artists. Step by step\, they discover the joy of creating something that’s truly their own. \nSo\, why not join Joalida in the studio? It’s a place where individuality is celebrated\, creativity flows\, and every teen has a chance to shine. \nAll materials are provided\, so students can fully immerse themselves in the process without the need to bring supplies. Ages: 11 – 17 \nSkill Level: Intermediate to advanced – Prior art experience and a sincere interest in art are required. \nNote: This is an art development class\, not a recreational after-school club. Students are expected to take their art practice seriously and to respect the shared studio space. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

No matter your background\, Becky’s story transcends gender and occupation. In fact\, it speaks directly to anyone who has faced obstacles while striving for excellence. \nOver the course of nearly two decades\, Becky served with distinction in the U.S. Navy. During that time\, she flew missions across the globe and trained the next generation of fighter pilots. In particular\, her legacy offers inspiration to young women and girls who dare to lead\, fly\, or dream big. \nThrough a talk and presentation by Becky\, a fireside chat with a moderator\, and an audience Q&A\, Becky will share vivid stories and hard-earned lessons. Her insights into grit\, confidence\, decision-making under pressure\, and resilience will resonate with all. Ultimately\, her talk will leave you feeling energized\, empowered\, and ready to face your own challenges. \nDon’t miss this rare opportunity to hear from a true American original\, someone who has not only flown jets but also defied limits every step of the way. \nBecky Calder’s story isn’t just about flying jets\, it’s about defying limits. \nPlease note\, this talk contains adult themes (war related) that some may deem inappropriate for young children. \nAbout Becky Calder\nOriginally from Longview\, Washington and a graduate of Phillips Academy\, Andover and the United States Naval Academy\, she earned her designation as a Naval Aviator in July of 2000 and began her career as an F/A-18 Hornet pilot where she has served in multiple squadrons. She has accrued over 2\,500 flight hours and 421 carrier arrested landings and became the first woman to have her basketball jersey (#32) retired from the United States Naval Academy in January 2014. She was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004\, and inducted into the Andover Athletics Hall of Honor in 2008\, as part of the inaugural class. \nRebecca received her Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Regent University in 2019 and is currently a PhD student pursuing her doctorate in Organizational Leadership\, also at Regent. SUMMARY:SALSArobics
DESCRIPTION:Get Ready to Move with SALSArobics!\nJoin Esther Gutierrez Sloan every Friday for a dynamic workout that blends fun\, rhythm\, and full-body movement. This class isn’t just about exercise – it’s about joy\, discovery\, and the thrill of dance! \nThroughout the session\, participants choose their intensity level – low\, moderate\, or high – while moving to irresistible Latin\, Caribbean\, Spanish\, and African beats. Options for both low-impact and high-impact movements allow everyone to customize their experience. \nEach class delivers an energizing workout that averages 4\,000 to 4\,200 steps\, with varying degrees of intensity.
