DESCRIPTION:First-timers and veterans explore their creative sides on stage and in front of the camera. The basics of acting such as hitting a mark\, enunciation and voice projection as well as more advanced acting principles such as developing a character\, developing a relationship and creating real behavior are explored. Classes consist of acting exercises\, character work\, improvising in character and doing scene work. Bring in material and characters from any play\, TV show\, film\, book – anything that interests you. Performance material will also be provided. Strengthen your technique and be ready for your next audition and performance. The focus of the class is on learning about acting\, learning life skills and having fun! DESCRIPTION:In “Peter Pan Now Adventures\,” students pick a character from Gorton Drama Studio’s original play\, “Peter Pan Now” and help develop\, write and shoot original short films. If a student was in the production of “Peter Pan Now\,” she can play her original role or choose a new role. Students do not have to have been in the production of “Peter Pan Now” in order to be in the class and all students will work on multiple films and get the opportunity to portray multiple characters. \nFor example\, an actor who portrayed a lost kid in our play can try portraying Peter Pan. Or an actor who portrayed a pirate in our play can play a lost kid. DESCRIPTION:The Black Oak Ensemble\, comprising violinist Desirée Ruhstrat\, cellist David Cunliffe\, and violist Aurélien Fort Pederzoli\, has garnered significant acclaim for its latest double album\, “Avant l’orage\,” featuring French string trios. The album achieved the remarkable feat of reaching #1 on the Billboard Classical Charts in July 2022 and earned a nomination for a 2023 ICMA International Chamber Music Award. Widely praised in both U.S. and international press\, including Canada\, Finland\, The Netherlands\, and Germany\, the ensemble has been lauded for its “insightful\, committed\, and masterful performances” and “fierce eloquence.” The group’s innovative and exciting chamber music has been showcased in various prestigious venues globally\, from special performances dedicated to human rights in Geneva to sold-out collaborations in Switzerland. DESCRIPTION:Since the sequencing of the genome in 2003\, we have known that humans share 99.9 percent of our DNA with all other humans\, regardless of skin tone or nationality\, indicating that race is not a biological reality as much as a legal and cultural construction. Today\, thanks to sites like Ancestry.com and 23 and Me\, these facts are getting personal\, as Americans discover ancestries that complicate long-held family identities. What should we do when we discover a family secret? And how can our ancestral stories help to illuminate our present moment? \nThis conversation begins with the premise that telling the truth is essential for healing. Join Rachel Jamison Webster\, Professor of Creative Writing at Northwestern University\, as she shares the story of her book\, Benjamin Banneker and Us: Eleven Generations of an American Family. In 2016\, Webster learned about several generations of African American ancestry that had been hidden in her family. This line traced back to the sister of Benjamin Banneker—the first Black man of science. Banneker was a free man living in the Revolutionary era. He helped survey Washington D.C.\, he compiled and published bestselling almanacs\, and he corresponded with Jefferson about the heinous injustice of slavery. \nWebster’s journey led her to celebrate Banneker’s brilliance\, as well as that of his parents\, grandparents\, and sisters\, and to grapple with the ways that racism had clouded the story of her family and country. She found herself in deep relationship and collaboration with her African American cousins—fellow Banneker descendants who came together to collaborate on the book. Together they celebrated their shared ancestors\, and discussed race\, history\, and identity with unflinching honesty. \nWebster will be in conversation with Melissa Blount\, Ph.D.\, an artist\, writer\, and licensed clinical psychologist practicing her craft in Evanston\, IL.
