SUMMARY:Take Your Painting to the Next Level
DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your painting to the next level? \nThis class is ideal for artists who already have some experience painting in Oil\, Acrylic\, Gouache\, or Pastel and are ready to grow their skills further. If you’ve been wanting to turn a photo into a painting or have started a piece but feel unsure about how to move forward\, this is the perfect opportunity to get expert guidance and renewed inspiration. \nEach student brings in either a reference photo or an unfinished painting to work on during class. From there\, artist and instructor Michael Latala provides hands-on\, individualized instruction to help you make confident artistic decisions. First\, he’ll show you how to evaluate your photo reference—guiding you in choosing what elements to include and what to leave out. Then\, through clear demonstrations\, he’ll help you resolve common issues like washed-out highlights or areas that have gone too dark to read. \nThroughout the class\, Michael gives each student personal attention. If you’d prefer to keep your canvas untouched\, he’s happy to demonstrate his suggestions digitally using Procreate on his iPad Pro. This digital approach allows you to visualize changes before applying them\, which can be especially helpful when exploring different color choices or compositional edits. \nImportantly\, this class is all about progress at your own pace. There’s no pressure to finish quickly. Instead\, you’re encouraged to slow down\, focus on what you’re learning\, and enjoy the process. With consistent support and practice\, you’ll discover how to turn your ideas into beautiful\, well-executed paintings—just the way you imagined them. \nThis series is a total of 8 sessions\, all will be 7 – 9:30pm \n\nOctober 15\nNovember 12\nDecember 17\nJanuary 15\nFebruary 18\nMarch 18

SUMMARY:Hereditary
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of Hereditary\, the breakout debut from writer-director Ari Aster\, at the Gorton Center. Known for its haunting visuals and deeply unsettling atmosphere\, this modern horror classic explores the dark side of family legacy and the terrifying weight of inheritance. \nWhen Ellen\, the matriarch of the Graham family\, dies\, her daughter’s family struggles to move forward. First\, grief weighs heavily on them. Yet\, as the days pass\, strange events begin to surface. Secrets once buried start to rise. And soon\, every discovery pulls them deeper into darkness. \nThe family unravels one mystery after another. However\, with each answer comes an even more frightening question. Their ancestry hides more than traditions. It hides a sinister inheritance. And this inheritance refuses to be ignored. As the truth emerges\, fear takes over. What begins as mourning quickly turns into a desperate fight for survival. \nStep by step\, their sense of normalcy collapses. First\, they lose trust in what they see. Then\, they lose faith in each other. Finally\, they lose the safety of their own home. No place feels secure. No moment feels calm. And no bond proves strong enough to withstand the terror pressing in from every side. \nThrough stunning imagery and haunting detail\, Aster redefines what a horror film can be. He pushes the genre into chilling new terrain. At the same time\, he offers a portrait of heritage twisted into something terrifying. The result is more than a movie; it is an experience. It is a warning. And\, most of all\, it is a shattering reminder that sometimes the most frightening monsters are the ones we inherit.

SUMMARY:SALSArobics
DESCRIPTION:Get Ready to Move with SALSArobics!\nJoin Esther Gutierrez Sloan every Friday for a dynamic workout that blends fun\, rhythm\, and full-body movement. This class isn’t just about exercise – it’s about joy\, discovery\, and the thrill of dance! \nThroughout the session\, participants choose their intensity level – low\, moderate\, or high – while moving to irresistible Latin\, Caribbean\, Spanish\, and African beats. Options for both low-impact and high-impact movements allow everyone to customize their experience. \nEach class delivers an energizing workout that averages 4\,000 to 4\,200 steps\, with varying degrees of intensity. Esther integrates the Total Body Training (TBT) Systems Methodology to support proper posture and promote muscle conditioning. She also incorporates Peripheral Heart Action (PHA) Training\, offering an optional challenge that builds aerobic strength based on individual pace and rhythm. \nTo build coordination and balance\, the class includes inline motion drills. Participants move across the room using steps that change direction – laterally\, diagonally\, forward\, and backward – adding functional movement to the workout. \nThe session concludes with Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching to enhance flexibility and recovery. \nColombian-born Esther Gutierrez Sloan created SALSArobics in 1989 to fuse authentic Latin rhythms with aerobic exercise. She has performed on national and local television in Illinois\, California\, Florida\, and New York. In addition to leading classes\, she has presented SALSArobics at fitness conventions\, schools\, health clubs\, ethnic festivals\, and international events. \nIn recognition of her groundbreaking work\, Esther was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2010. SUMMARY:Tai Chi
DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, it is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s class. \nHealth Benefits \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found it is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nIt is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Reiki
DESCRIPTION:Reiki\n\nReiki is a Japanese energy healing practice that promotes physical\, emotional\, and mental balance. In Introduction to Reiki\, you will learn techniques for self-care\, relaxation\, and stress management. Rei means ‘Universal life’ and Ki means ‘energy\, so reiki literally means Universal Life Force Energy. \nReiki can be a spiritual journey for some as it helps connect individuals with the Universal Life Force Energy. Taking a Reiki class can deepen one’s spiritual practice and lead to a greater understanding of oneself. \nIn this workshop\, you will explore what “energy work” is and determine whether you want to gain the knowledge and skills to provide energy healing to yourself and others through further study of reiki. \nReiki is a form of alternative therapy that originated in Japan. It involves the use of a practitioner’s hands to channel and transfer energy into the patient’s body\, with the goal of promoting relaxation\, reducing stress and anxiety\, and improving overall well-being. The practice is based on the belief that there is a universal life force energy that flows through all living things and that by harnessing and directing this energy\, healing can occur at the physical\, emotional\, and spiritual levels. Reiki is considered a gentle\, non-invasive therapy\, and is often used alongside traditional medical treatments as a complementary therapy.

SUMMARY:WICKED
DESCRIPTION:Before Dorothy ever lands in Oz\, another story unfolds. The story of Wicked. \nElphaba is smart\, fiery\, and different. Born with green skin\, she grows up mocked and misunderstood. Yet she carries a gift she doesn’t fully understand—power unlike anything seen in Oz. Glinda\, by contrast\, shines in every room. She’s blonde\, charming\, and adored. But behind her glittering smile lies a young woman still searching for purpose. \nTheir worlds collide at Shiz University. At first\, they clash. Glinda thrives on popularity\, while Elphaba prefers to stay in the shadows. But circumstances force them together. Over time\, rivalry turns into respect. Respect grows into friendship. Against all odds\, they become inseparable. \nThen comes the turning point. A meeting with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz promises hope but hides betrayal. Elphaba sees corruption and cruelty. She refuses to stay silent. Glinda\, torn between loyalty and ambition\, chooses a different path. \nFrom that moment\, the friends walk divergent roads. Elphaba embraces her power\, defying the system and the lies of Oz. To the people\, she becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. Glinda\, meanwhile\, learns compassion. She rises as Glinda the Good\, a beacon of light. \nTheir bond remains at the center. Love and heartbreak\, choices and consequences\, twist their fates together even as the world drives them apart. \nWith sweeping songs\, dazzling spectacle\, and deep emotion\, Wicked reimagines the land of Oz. It asks what makes someone “wicked” and what makes someone “good.” And it reveals how even the strongest friendships can change destinies. \nDirector: Jon M. Chu\nWriters: Winnie Holzman\, Dana Fox\, Gregory Maguire\nStars: Cynthia Erivo\, Ariana Grande\, Jeff Goldblum

SUMMARY:ROBIN HOOD MATH: TAKE CONTROL OF THE ALGORITHMS THAT RUN YOUR LIFE
DESCRIPTION:Everything we do today is recorded as data that’s sold to the highest bidder. Plugging our personal data into impersonal algorithms has made government agencies more efficient and tech companies more profitable. But all this comes at a price. It’s easy to feel like an insignificant number in a world of number crunchers who care more about their bottom line than your humanity. It’s time to flip the equation\, turning math into an empowering tool for the rest of us. \nIn his new book Robin Hood Math: Take Control of the Algorithms That Run Your Life\, award-winning mathematician Noah Giansiracusa\, Ph.D.\, explains how the tech giants and financial institutions use formulas to get ahead—and how anyone can use these same formulas in their everyday life. Through real-world events and relatable examples\, Giansiracusa makes math fun and relevant\, equipping readers with simple math hacks and streamlined formulas that can be applied immediately. You’ll learn how to handle risk rationally\, make better investments\, take control of your social media\, and reclaim agency over the decisions you make each day. \nGiansiracusa\, an associate professor of mathematics at Bentley University and a visiting scholar at Harvard University\, has spent his career studying algorithms and society. He has penned over a dozen prominent op-eds at outlets including Scientific American\, TIME\, WIRED\, Slate and more. He excels at explaining complex math to wide audiences and has been on national television programs discussing timely topics like AI-generated misinformation and the importance of mathematical literacy. \nIn a society that all too often takes from the poor and gives to the rich\, math can be a vital democratizing force. Robin Hood Math helps you to think for yourself\, act in your own best interests\, and thrive. \nSiracusa will be in conversation with Karen Saxe\, Ph.D.\, senior vice president\, government relations\, for the American Mathematical Society. She is Professor Emerita at Macalester College where she served as chair of the Department of Mathematics\, Statistics\, and Computer Science. \nBONUS AFTER-HOURS EVENT: FAN donors are invited to attend a private AFTER-HOURS event hosted by Giansiracusa and Saxe that will start immediately after the webinar. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Make AI Work for You
DESCRIPTION:Generative AI is growing fast. Every week\, new websites and apps appear. It can feel overwhelming. But with the right guidance\, you can learn to use these tools with confidence. \nThere are many options available. Some of the most popular are ChatGPT\, Google Gemini\, and Apple Intelligence. Each one has unique strengths. ChatGPT is known for its conversational style. Google Gemini focuses on integration with Google’s services. Apple Intelligence connects directly with Apple devices. Together\, they offer a wide range of possibilities. \nIn this class\, we will explore these tools step by step. First\, you will see what makes each platform different. Then\, we will compare their strengths and weaknesses. This way\, you can decide which tool fits your needs best. \nNext\, we will focus on prompts. Prompts are the questions or instructions you give to the AI. The way you write a prompt can change the answer you get. For example\, a short and vague prompt may give you a broad response. A clear and detailed prompt can give you a precise answer. With practice\, you will learn how to shape prompts to get the results you want. \nWe will also cover examples. You will practice creating prompts for writing\, research\, and creative projects. In addition\, you will learn how to adjust your prompts when the answer is not what you expected. Step by step\, you will build confidence in using these tools. \nBy the end of this class\, you will understand the best options for generative AI. More importantly\, you will know how to interact with these tools in a smart and effective way. You will leave with practical skills that you can apply right away. \nGenerative AI is powerful. With the right approach\, you can make it work for you. \nThis seminar is produced by Mike Gershbein with VSP Chicago: \n\nMichael Gershbein\, Founder \nWe are your Chicagoland group and in-home tech tutors! \nhttp://www.VSPChicago.com \n847.204.2916 \nFacebook  X  LinkedIn

SUMMARY:VALIDATION: TRANSFORM YOUR RELATIONSHIPS\, INCREASE YOUR INFLUENCE\, AND CHANGE YOUR LIFE
DESCRIPTION:We all spend an absurd amount of energy trying to get people to listen to us\, and despite our best efforts\, we often fail. But what if the secret to changing behavior was to demonstrate acceptance? \nEnter validation — communication that one is mindful\, understands\, and empathizes with another person’s experience\, thereby accepting it as valid. When validation-based treatment\, also known as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)\, was introduced over thirty years ago\, it revolutionized psychology and facilitated change even amongst those patients who were highly resistant to it. Yet\, its practice has remained largely buried in treatment manuals and research articles written for psychologists — until now. \nWith Validation: How the Skill Set That Revolutionized Psychology Will Transform Your Relationships\, Increase Your Influence\, and Change Your Life\, psychologist and DBT expert Caroline Fleck\, Ph.D.\, brings these validation techniques out of therapy and into everyday life to help anyone decrease conflict\, strengthen relationships\, and change behaviors—in themselves and in others. \nPart memoir and part practical guide\, Fleck explains how and why validation is a catalyst for transformation. She draws on her two decades of experience to shows how anyone can develop the DBT skills of a therapist through the “Validation Ladder”: an actionable eight-step model that will help cultivate and communicate acceptance across relationships and unlock the potential for growth. \nFleck will be in conversation with Kelly Leonard\, Vice President of Creative Strategy\, Innovation\, and Business Development at The Second City in Chicago. He is the author of the acclaimed book Yes\, And and hosts the popular podcast Getting to Yes\, And for Second City Works and WGN radio. \nBONUS AFTER-HOURS EVENT: FAN donors are invited to attend a private AFTER-HOURS event hosted by Fleck and Leonard that will start immediately after the webinar. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:PSYCHO
DESCRIPTION:A secretary on the run makes a fatal stop at a lonely motel\nMarion Crane (Janet Leigh) is tired of her ordinary life in Phoenix. She longs to marry her boyfriend\, Sam Loomis (John Gavin)\, but money stands in the way. One Friday afternoon\, temptation wins. Marion steals $40\,000 from her employer and hits the road. Her plan is simple: reach Sam\, pay off his debts\, and start fresh. \nBut the journey takes a dark turn. As night falls\, heavy rain pounds the highway. Marion grows anxious\, nervous about the police\, and desperate for rest. She pulls off onto a deserted back road. There\, a flickering neon sign appears through the storm: Bates Motel. \nThe motel looks worn and forgotten. Its owner\, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins)\, steps out to greet her. He’s shy\, polite\, even boyish. He offers Marion a meal and friendly conversation. Yet something about him feels off. Norman speaks often of his mother\, who lives in the looming house on the hill. His tone shifts from tender to bitter. His smile hides unease. \nOver dinner\, Marion rethinks her choices. She decides to return the money and face the consequences. But she never gets the chance. In the dead of night\, the bathroom curtain rips open\, and Marion’s story ends in a shocking burst of violence. \nFrom here\, the story shifts. A suspicious sister\, a determined boyfriend\, and a curious private detective come looking for answers. Their search circles back to Norman and the suffocating shadow of his mother. \nAlfred Hitchcock directs Psycho with relentless tension. Quick cuts\, stark shadows\, and Bernard Herrmann’s piercing score pull viewers into a world where safety unravels in seconds. Every scene builds dread. Every revelation twists deeper. And the final truth about Norman Bates delivers one of cinema’s most unforgettable shocks. \nWriters: Joseph Stefano\, Robert Bloch\nStars: Anthony Perkins\, Janet Leigh\, Vera Miles

SUMMARY:HAUNTED MANSION
DESCRIPTION:The Story of Gracey Manor\nGabbie (Rosario Dawson)\, a widowed doctor\, is ready for a new chapter. After losing her husband\, she leaves the busy streets of New York behind. With her young son\, Travis\, she heads to New Orleans in search of a fresh start. Their new home is Gracey Manor\, a sprawling old mansion with crumbling walls and plenty of character. Gabbie imagines transforming it into a charming bed and breakfast. At first\, it feels like a dream. But soon\, the dream twists into something far darker. \nStrange noises echo through the halls. Shadows move where no one should be. Doors slam on their own. Gabbie and Travis realize quickly that the house is not only dilapidated – it is haunted. And not by just one ghost. Spirits fill every room. Some are playful. Others are menacing. All of them make life inside the manor nearly impossible. \nDesperate for help\, Gabbie seeks out experts in the paranormal. She gathers an unlikely team. A priest\, a psychic\, a historian\, and a ghost tour guide step into the mansion\, each bringing their own skills. Together\, they face the mysteries inside Gracey Manor. Yet the deeper they look\, the more dangerous the secrets become. \nHatbox Ghost\nAt the center of the haunting stands the Hatbox Ghost\, portrayed through motion capture and voice by Jared Leto. He is eerie\, calculating\, and relentless. His presence is not random. He is tied to a sinister plot involving lost souls and the mansion’s original owner\, William Gracey. Long ago\, Gracey’s grief led him down a path of obsession and rituals. Now\, those choices threaten to bind both the living and the dead in eternal darkness. \nThe group must uncover the truth\, fight back against the Hatbox Ghost\, and free the manor before it consumes them all. Gracey Manor is more than a house – it is a trap. And only courage\, unity\, and quick thinking can break its hold. \nJoin us for this fun-filled story of scares and excitement! \nDirector: Justin Simien\nWriter: Katie Dippold\nStars: LaKeith Stanfield\, Rosario Dawson\, Owen Wilson

SUMMARY:ROUNDTABLE WORKSHOP: DEALING WITH FEELING (EVENT 1 OF 4)
DESCRIPTION:Space is limited to 100 attendees. REGISTRATION REQUIRED!\nIn Dealing with Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want\, Marc Brackett\, Ph.D. (FAN ’19)\, offers an essential guide for regulating how we respond to our emotions to transform our lives. \nSuccess in virtually every aspect of life―career\, friendship\, love\, and family―is determined mainly by one thing: how we deal with emotions. In your most challenging moments\, how did you respond? Did you fly off the handle? Were you paralyzed by indecision? Did you engage in behaviors that undermined your best intentions? Or did you exhibit grace under pressure and flourish? How you responded likely shaped what happened next. But emotion regulation isn’t a fixed trait\, as many believe. It is a set of skills and strategies that must be learned\, practiced\, and refined over a lifetime. \nBrackett examines his own challenges dealing with emotions\, explains the latest science of emotion regulation\, and provides a set of practical\, evidence-based strategies to help us use our feelings wisely to nurture healthy relationships\, achieve ambitious goals\, and experience greater well-being. At the heart of his message is acceptance: There are no bad emotions―only emotions we don’t understand or know how to direct in positive\, intentional ways. \nBy honing our emotion regulation skills\, we can increase our chances of achieving success in all facets of our lives. Dealing with Feeling will show you how to work with your and others’ emotions―not against them―so you can become the best version of yourself and lift others up\, too. \nBrackett is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence\, a professor in the Child Study Center at Yale University\, and the author of the 2019 bestselling book Permission to Feel: The Power of Emotional Intelligence to Achieve Well-Being and Success. He is the lead developer of RULER\, an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning that has been adopted by more than five thousand schools around the globe. In 2024\, he launched the YouTube webcast Dealing with Feelings. \nThis event is suitable for youth 12+. It will not be recorded or live streamed.

SUMMARY:Kindermusik Level 3-4 (3-5 year olds)
DESCRIPTION:The Kindermusik curriculum blends music\, movement\, pretend play\, storytelling\, and community building. Each element works together to create a rich and engaging experience for your child. Every class helps children listen closely\, reflect on what they hear\, and compare sounds and ideas. They learn to make choices\, express opinions\, and solve simple problems. These skills build confidence and encourage curiosity. \nAt the same time\, children explore the fundamentals of music. They begin to understand rhythm\, melody\, and dynamics through playful activities. With every song and game\, their imaginations grow. Each activity supports both creativity and cognitive development. Plus\, children have fun while learning essential life skills. \nSocial interaction is also a key part of the experience. Children connect with their peers through shared songs\, partner dances\, and group games. This helps them build communication skills and learn the value of cooperation. The classroom becomes a safe and joyful place to explore their world. \nGrown-ups play an important role too. At the start and end of class\, we invite caregivers to join in. This builds a sense of routine and comfort. Adults also stay nearby for bathroom breaks and support as needed. Your presence matters – it helps children feel secure and supported. \nKindermusik’s curriculum is backed by decades of research. Since 1978\, only accredited early childhood educators have taught our classes. That means your child is learning from highly trained professionals who understand how young children grow. \nEvery month brings a brand-new theme\, so the experience stays fresh and exciting. Along with in-class activities\, families get access to a user-friendly app and digital learning tools. These materials let you continue the fun and learning at home. \nWith Kindermusik\, your child gains more than music skills – they build a foundation for a lifetime of joyful learning. \nSee www.kindermusiknorthshore.com for more information.
