SUMMARY:Tai Chi
DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, it is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s class. \nHealth Benefits \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found it is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nIt is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

SUMMARY:Fencing
DESCRIPTION:En Garde! Prét? Allez! \nSign your child up for fencing lessons at Gorton! \nThis class is perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to sharpen their basic fencing skills. We’ll cover the rules of fencing\, proper etiquette\, footwork\, and both attack and defense techniques. \nEach session includes a warm-up\, footwork drills\, group instruction\, and bouting (practice matches). The instructor will guide students every step of the way. \nPlease dress comfortably and bring water. Open to ages 7–14. \nWhy learn to fence?\n\nFencing builds balance\, coordination\, and agility. These skills carry over into other sports and everyday life. \nYou don’t need to be a natural athlete to start. Our lessons ease you into the sport at your own pace. \nFencing sharpens your mind as much as your body. It encourages quick thinking\, creative problem-solving\, and smart strategy. \nPlus\, the sport teaches discipline\, respect\, responsibility\, and sportsmanship – values that go far beyond the fencing strip. \nHistory of Fencing\nDid you know the archaeological evidence of fencing dates back to 1190 B.C.E.? The oldest archeological evidence of a fencing contest is from an Egyptian temple along the river Nile\, and in Europe\, historical records of sword fighting schools extend back to the 12th century. Fencing evolved into a popular entertainment sport around the time of King Henry VIII\, but it wasn’t until the mid-18th century that the sport became truly fashionable among European nobility.\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, fencing became a popular sport among European aristocracy\, and developed a gentlemanly code of conduct which the sport maintains to this day. Men’s fencing competitions were first included in the summer Olympics in 1896 and women’s fencing competitions were added in 1924. \nMidwest Fencing Club’s mission is to help people discover\, enjoy and excel in the sport of fencing by providing the highest level of instruction in a true sportsmanship environment. They have been serving the Chicagoland community for over 10 years. Their experience comes from National\, NCAA\, and Olympic champions. Their programs range from introductory levels to advanced competitive aspirations. Midwest Fencing Club welcomes all ages to learn fencing\, enjoy it as a hobby\, or turn it into their professional sport.

SUMMARY:Teen Draw & Paint with Joalida Smit
DESCRIPTION:Draw & Paint with Joalida\nCome hang out in a space where creativity comes alive. Artist and educator Joalida Smit invites teens to join her ongoing art class at the Gorton Center. This class is all about exploring\, experimenting\, and finding your own artistic voice. From the start\, the studio feels welcoming\, inspiring\, and full of possibility. \nFirst\, students ages 11 to 17 get to try out a wide mix of materials. They might begin with drawing or painting\, and then move on to mixed media. As they experiment\, they gain confidence. Little by little\, they start developing a style that feels uniquely their own. \nOn top of that\, Joalida’s teaching style makes this class stand out. Instead of rigid\, step-by-step lessons\, her approach is flexible and student-focused. She meets each young artist right where they are. Maybe your teen sketches all the time. Maybe they’ve never touched a paintbrush before. Either way\, Joalida gives encouragement and guidance to help them grow. \nHands-On Experience\nNext\, comes hands-on practice. Students work with graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, watercolor\, ink – you name it. They mix materials\, test new techniques\, and see what happens. Because of this\, every class feels fresh and exciting. \nAnd here’s the best part: the goal isn’t to finish identical projects. Instead\, the focus is on exploration\, creativity\, and storytelling. Students learn how to express themselves\, share their ideas\, and bring imagination to life. As a result\, they walk away with more than just artwork. They leave with stronger skills\, bigger confidence\, and a deeper connection to their creativity. \nFinally\, this class gives teens a safe\, supportive space to take risks\, try new things\, and grow as artists. Step by step\, they discover the joy of creating something that’s truly their own. \nSo\, why not join Joalida in the studio? It’s a place where individuality is celebrated\, creativity flows\, and every teen has a chance to shine. \nAll materials are provided\, so students can fully immerse themselves in the process without the need to bring supplies. Ages: 11 – 17 \nSkill Level: Intermediate to advanced – Prior art experience and a sincere interest in art are required. \nNote: This is an art development class\, not a recreational after-school club. Students are expected to take their art practice seriously and to respect the shared studio space. Teens who cannot adhere to the expectations of the class may be asked to leave. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.

SUMMARY:THE DEAD DON'T HURT
DESCRIPTION:The Dead Don’t Hurt is a Western drama set on the American frontier during the Civil War. The film follows two pioneers who fall in love and try to build a life in a brutal\, lawless world. Their relationship drives the story and gives the film its emotional core. \nAs the war spreads across the country\, its violence and instability reach even the most remote territories. Power shifts quickly\, justice breaks down\, and danger surrounds them. The frontier tests their resolve at every turn. The land itself is unforgiving\, and other people often pose an even greater threat. Survival demands hard choices\, courage\, and sacrifice. \nLove does not protect the couple from loss\, but it gives them purpose. They fight to hold on to each other while facing betrayal\, cruelty\, and grief. Each decision shapes their future. The film emphasizes strength and independence\, especially in the face of systems designed to deny safety and fairness. \nRather than celebrate violence\, The Dead Don’t Hurt confronts its consequences. Conflict leaves lasting scars and forces the characters to grow or break under pressure. Quiet moments of reflection stand alongside sudden danger\, creating a tense and grounded rhythm. \nVisually restrained and emotionally direct\, the film strips the Western of romantic myth. It focuses on human cost instead of conquest. At its heart\, The Dead Don’t Hurt tells a story about endurance. It shows how love survives in a world defined by war\, loss\, and relentless hardship. \nDirector: Viggo Mortensen \nStars: Vicky Krieps\, Viggo Mortensen\, Solly McLeod \nWe are especially grateful to the Sheffield Foundation for sponsoring this screening.

SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:Death Café\nPull up a chair\, pour a warm cup of tea\, and enjoy a slice of cake. At a Death Café\, people – often complete strangers – come together to talk openly about death. At first\, it might sound unusual. Yet once the conversation begins\, something shifts. People start to relax\, laugh\, and connect. The simple act of naming what many avoid opens the door to deeper living. \nOur purpose is simple: to increase awareness of death so we can make the most of life. When we face mortality directly\, we often find more gratitude\, courage\, and clarity. Instead of pushing death aside\, we bring it into the light – and\, in doing so\, we invite more meaning into every moment. \nA Place for Honest Conversation\nUnlike a grief support group or counseling session\, a Death Café isn’t about fixing or healing. Rather\, it’s about conversation. It’s a space where curiosity replaces fear and where everyone’s perspective matters. As a death doula\, I’ll offer a gentle prompt or question to spark dialogue. From there\, the discussion flows naturally. Sometimes it’s serious. Other times it’s surprisingly light. Either way\, it’s always honest and alive. \nMoreover\, the Death Café welcomes every faith\, philosophy\, and worldview. Differences are embraced\, and respect anchors our exchange. You can speak\, listen\, or simply reflect – whatever feels right for you. \nBy the end\, most people leave with a sense of connection and renewal. Talking about death doesn’t diminish life – it deepens it. So come for the tea\, stay for the conversation\, and walk away seeing life with fresh eyes. \nCake\, coffee and tea are always served! \n \nLara N. Dotson-Renta\, PhD is a longtime writer\, educator and scholar of languages (Spanish and French). She is also a 500hr RYT yoga instructor with trauma informed yoga training through The Veteran’s Yoga Project and children’s yoga training from Full of Joy Yoga in CT. She is also a trained death doula through INELDA (The International End of Life Doula Association). She is interested in helping others live life more fully and intentionally. \nShe resides in Lake Bluff with her family.

SUMMARY:MARY POPPINS RETURNS
DESCRIPTION:Mary Poppins Returns is a heartwarming musical that continues the story of the Banks family in London\, decades after the original tale. Michael Banks\, now grown\, struggles after the loss of his wife. He raises three children while facing financial trouble and the risk of losing the family home. His children—Annabel\, John\, and Georgie—deal with fear\, frustration\, and the challenges of growing up. \nJust when hope seems lost\, Mary Poppins returns. The magical nanny arrives with her umbrella\, songs\, and whimsical adventures. She teaches the children—and Michael—to navigate loss and embrace imagination. She shows them that even in hardship\, love and optimism can create new possibilities. \nThe film mixes humor\, music\, and emotion. Each song and scene entertains while exploring themes of family\, hope\, and renewal. Mary Poppins encourages the Banks family to value creativity\, wonder\, and togetherness. Jack\, a cheerful lamplighter\, joins the journey\, adding warmth and comic relief. SUMMARY:THE RUNNING GROUND: A FATHER\, A SON\, AND THE SIMPLEST OF SPORTS
DESCRIPTION:For Nicholas Thompson\, author of the new book The Running Ground: A Father\, a Son\, and the Simplest of Sports\, running has always been about something more than putting one foot in front of another. He ran his first mile at age five\, using it to connect with his father as his family fell apart. As a young man\, it was a sport that transformed\, and then shook\, his sense of self-worth. In his 30s\, it was a way of coping with a profound medical scare. \nBy his early 40s\, Thompson had many accomplishments. He was the editor in chief of a major magazine; a devoted husband and father; and a passionate runner. But he was haunted by the recent death of his brilliant\, complicated father and the crack-up that derailed his father’s life. Had the intensity and ambition he’d inherited made a personal crisis inevitable for him as well? \nThen a chance offer gave him the opportunity to train for the Chicago Marathon with elite coaches. Giving himself over to the sport more fully than ever before\, he discovered that aging didn’t necessarily put you on an unbroken trajectory of decline. For seven years after his father died\, Thompson transforms his body to perform at its highest capacity\, and the profound discipline and awareness he builds along the way changes every aspect of his life. Throughout the narrative\, he weaves in stories of remarkable men and women who have used the sport to transcend some of the hardest moments in life. \nThe Running Ground is a story about fathers\, sons\, and the most basic and most beautiful of sports. \nThompson is the CEO of The Atlantic\, a position he has held since 2021. He was previously the editor-in-chief of WIRED and the editor of NewYorker.com. He films a daily video on tech policy for LinkedIn and has roughly two million followers across social media platforms. He writes a monthly newsletter\, The Most Interesting Reads\, which currently has about 500\,000 readers\, about the best things he has read recently. \nThompson has long been a competitive runner; in 2021\, he set the American record for men 45+ in the 50K race. \nThompson will be in conversation with David Epstein (FAN ’16\, ’20)\, a science writer and author of the New York Times bestsellers Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World\, and The Sports Gene. His forthcoming book\, Inside the Box: How Constraints Make Us Better\, will be published in May 2026. \nBONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY! FAN is giving away copies of The Running Ground to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Mahjong 101 with Windy City Mahjong
DESCRIPTION:Mahjong Workshop for Beginners\nStart from scratch with us. This class is for anyone new to American Mahjong. We begin with the tiles. You’ll see how each one works and why it matters. \nNext\, we dive into the NMJL Card. You’ll learn how hands form and how scoring works. Then we practice dealing. We take it step by step so everyone feels confident setting up a game. \nWe also teach The Charleston. It’s the quick\, strategic tile-exchange that makes the game even more fun. \nTo finish\, we play a full game. You’ll use your new skills right away in a friendly\, supportive setting. It’s the perfect way to start your Mahjong journey. \nCaroline Larew:  Caroline Larew is an American Mahjong instructor in the northern suburbs of Chicago and the founder of  Windy City Mahjong. Drawn to the game for its blend of strategy and camaraderie\, she loves how it offers both a mental challenge and a reason to spend time with friends. \nCaroline brings a strong professional foundation to Windy City Mahjong\, shaped by years in finance and investing. After earning her MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business\, she built a career in private equity before an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis led her to rethink her priorities. Now healthy and cancer-free\, Caroline has found renewed purpose in teaching and building community through Mahjong — a space where strategy\, connection\, and joy intersect. \nA mother of three\, she can often be found cruising around the suburbs in her minivan full of kids\, on the pickleball court\, sharing coffee with friends\, or hunting for hidden gems at estate sales.

SUMMARY:After School Art Club with Lezlie
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a budding artist in the family? Give their creativity room to grow in this engaging after-school art class designed specifically for students in Grades 1–4! \nEach class is thoughtfully structured to balance artistic freedom with meaningful learning. We begin with a free-draw session\, allowing students time to warm up\, express themselves\, and get their creative energy flowing. With guidance and encouragement\, they’ll create their own artwork inspired by the featured artist\, putting their personal spin on classic techniques while developing new skills and confidence. \nThe class wraps up with group clean-up\, an age-appropriate art discussion that encourages observation and expression\, and a fun “draw-a-long” activity to reinforce what they’ve learned in a playful and supportive way. \nMore than just an art class\, this is a space where young artists can explore\, reflect\, and connect with the wider world through creativity.
