SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Atlys String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:ATLYS String Quartet\nForget everything you think you know about a string quartet. \nThis Valentine’s Day weekend\, Rendezvous Arts welcomes ATLYS\, an all-female powerhouse quartet with an international following. They take four classical string instruments far beyond the expected. \nATLYS is classically trained\, but tradition doesn’t hold them back. They move from folk and pop to film music\, electronic dance music\, and original works. They even bring looping and other technology into the mix. Their music has earned more than 25 million streams worldwide. They’ve performed everywhere from intimate concert spaces to Red Rocks and the Gorge Amphitheatre. \nEvery piece on this program has a special connection to ATLYS. Each one was written or arranged for the quartet\, or created by the musicians themselves. Along the way\, they’ll share the stories behind the music and guide us from one sound world to the next. \nExpect virtuosity and personality. Expect familiar melodies in unexpected places. And expect four musicians who love making music together—and sharing it with everyone in the room. \nFour strings. A whole musical universe. One very good reason to make Rendezvous part of your Valentine’s weekend. \n  \nFeatured Visual Artist: Glenn Hansen\nOur featured visual artist for this program is Glenn Hansen\, a photographer and educator whose work is grounded in careful observation and the experience of place. \nGlenn’s career has spanned both film and digital photography\, from years working alongside renowned photographer David Plowden to more than three decades teaching photography at the College of DuPage. His own work moves between urban landscapes\, the edges of suburbia and rural America\, and the expansive high plains of the West. \nWhether working with a large-format camera or today’s digital tools\, Glenn approaches photography with the same idea at its center: “Let me show you this.” \nHis images invite us to stop\, look closely\, and experience a place through someone else’s eyes\, a fitting companion to ATLYS and their own invitation to hear familiar instruments in entirely new ways.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Haymarket Opera Company
DESCRIPTION:Haymarket Opera Company\nThey’re back. \nAfter one of our most popular Rendezvous programs to date\, Haymarket Opera Company returns for another unforgettable evening of music\, drama\, and Baroque extravagance. \nHaymarket brings the operatic world of the 17th and 18th centuries vividly to life. The musicians perform on period instruments and embrace the theatrical traditions of the time. The result is anything but distant or delicate. \nThis music is passionate. Funny. Dramatic. Virtuosic. And completely alive. \nFor this Rendezvous program\, soprano Emily Birsan and tenor (TBA) take center stage. They’re joined by Jeri-Lou Zike and Martin Davids on violin\, Craig Trompeter on cello\, and Brandon Acker on theorbo. \nHaymarket has earned national acclaim from The New York Times\, Chicago Tribune\, and Musical America. Audiences far beyond Chicago have also embraced the ensemble and its thrilling approach to period performance. \nBut you don’t need to know anything about Baroque opera to love this evening. \nCome hear extraordinary singers and remarkable instruments up close. Experience music that has captivated audiences for centuries\, performed just a few feet away. \nOld music. Incredible musicians. Absolutely nothing old-fashioned about it. \nFeatured Visual Artist: Max Li\nOur featured visual artist for this program is Max Li\, an interdisciplinary artist from China now based in Chicago. \nWorking across photography\, tintype\, installation\, object-making\, and digital media\, Max explores how meaning is shaped through memory\, ritual\, place\, and lived experience. His work often unfolds over time\, inviting viewers to notice how repetition\, participation\, and everyday encounters can transform the way we see an object or space. \nMax holds an MFA from the University of Chicago and a BFA with Honors from the University of California\, Irvine. Beyond his studio practice\, he develops cultural programs and collaborative projects throughout Chicago\, including work that activates civic and sacred spaces through exhibitions\, performances\, workshops\, and community gatherings.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Katie Grennan\, John Williams & Friends!
DESCRIPTION:Katie Grennan\, John Williams and Friends! \nIt wouldn’t feel like a Rendezvous season without Katie Grennan and John Williams. \nTwo longtime audience favorites return to close out Season 7. This time\, they’re bringing friends. \nTogether\, they’ll share an entirely new program celebrating the music\, energy\, and irresistible spirit of Ireland. \nKatie is one of today’s most exciting Irish fiddlers. She pairs the precision of her classical training with the instinct and energy of a champion Irish dancer. A former member of Gaelic Storm\, Katie now performs with Reverie Road\, The Bow Tides\, and STEAM Quartet. She has also appeared with Aoife Scott\, Trinity Irish Dance Company\, Michael Londra\, and the Gardiner Brothers. \nJohn is internationally recognized as one of today’s foremost players of Irish traditional music. A Chicago native and five-time All-Ireland champion\, he is the only American-born musician to win first place in the Senior Concertina category. John was also a founding member of the groundbreaking ensemble Solas. He toured internationally with the group and earned Grammy nominations. Over his remarkable career\, he has collaborated with artists ranging from The Chieftains and Riverdance to Mavis Staples and the London Symphony Orchestra. \nFor Rendezvous Arts\, Katie and John are creating an evening filled with traditional Irish music\, extraordinary musicians\, great stories\, and plenty of surprises. \nExpect the kind of spontaneous energy that makes it nearly impossible to sit completely still. \nAfter a season of unforgettable music\, we can’t think of a better way to bring it home. \nA few “whews” are practically guaranteed. Dancing may be unavoidable. \n  \nFeatured Visual Artist: Kathleen Newman\nOur featured visual artist for this program is Kathleen Newman\, a Chicago-area painter whose award-winning landscapes are shaped by close observation\, atmosphere\, and a deep sense of place. \nWorking in pastel and oil\, Kathleen draws inspiration from the Impressionist and Tonalist traditions. She often begins with small studies painted outdoors\, then develops larger works in the studio\, capturing the light\, color\, and mood of places ranging from Lake Michigan and the Indiana Dunes to the streets of Chicago. \nKathleen has received numerous national honors\, including the Eminent Pastelist designation from the International Association of Pastel Societies. Her work has been exhibited widely and is held in private and corporate collections across the country. \nLike traditional Irish music\, her paintings find something enduring in place\, memory\, and the experience of paying close attention.
