SUMMARY:FAN-Quitting: A Life Strategy
DESCRIPTION:BONUS AFTER-HOURS EVENT: Attendees who purchase a copy of Quitting from FAN’s partner bookseller The Book Stall are invited to attend an AFTER-HOURS event hosted by Keller and Stevens that will start immediately after the webinar. Details on the webinar registration page. \nWe’re trained from birth to value grit and perseverance above all else. Quitting: A Life Strategy turns that lesson on its head\, offering instead a refreshingly humane and nuanced perspective on the role quitting plays in our careers and wellbeing. In the pages of this book\, Pulitzer-prize winning writer Julia Keller\, Ph.D. reminds us that\, to live rich\, meaningful\, joy-filled lives\, sometimes we have to say “no”—full stop. \nCombining reportage from the front lines of scientific research\, incisive pop culture commentary\, and conversations with people who have made profound changes in their lives\, Keller gives readers the rationale and confidence they need to shape their future without fear—at work\, at home\, and in the world at large. With Keller’s guidance\, readers will visit labs doing cutting-edge research into what she dubs “the neuroscience of ‘Nope – I’m done\,’” and be reminded of their favorite quitting scenes in movies\, books\, and music. They’ll learn about the tangled social history of our celebration of grit. They’ll discover how quitting can make space for key breakthroughs – and help us break free of the stubborn\, often destructive myth of perseverance. \nKeller has a Ph.D. in English Literature from The Ohio State University and has taught at Princeton University\, the University of Chicago\, and the University of Notre Dame\, and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. She was the chief book critic at The Chicago Tribune for many years before quitting the world of daily journalism to write books. She was born and raised in West Virginia\, the setting for her critically acclaimed\, eight-volume mystery series. \nKeller will be in conversation with Heidi Stevens\, Director of External Affairs for the University of Chicago’s TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health. Prior to joining TMW\, Stevens worked at the Chicago Tribune for 23 years\, where she wrote a daily column called “Balancing Act.” She maintains a weekly nationally syndicated column. She also serves as a FAN board member. \nThis event suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. \nThis event is presented by Family Action Network (FAN). Gorton Center is proud to partner with FAN as a sponsor of this event to bring this programming to our patrons.

SUMMARY:Film Discussion Series: Safety Not Guaranteed
DESCRIPTION:Film Discussion Series at Gorton Presents: Safety Not Guaranteed\nDarius is a young intern at a Seattle-based magazine and jumps at the chance to investigate the author of a classified ad seeking someone to travel back in time with. While Jeff just wants to chase after his high school crush and Arnau wants some kind of life experience\, Darius spends her time with Kenneth\, a man who believes that he has built a time machine. The closer they become and the more they understand about each other\, the less clear it becomes if Kenneth is just crazy or if he actually is going to successfully travel back in time. \nA post-show discussion will be moderated by Josh Wolff\, our director of film Programs!\n

SUMMARY:Traditional African Hand Drumming with Helen Bond
DESCRIPTION:Learn traditional hand drumming from Guinea\, West Africa!\nThis is a SINGLE class on Monday\, May 1\, 6:00pm – 7:30pm\n \nHand drumming has a rich history in Guinea\, West Africa\, dating back to the 13th century. The drum was a central part of everyday life and was used for communication\, religious ceremonies\, and entertainment. \nHelen Bond will share the great joy of traditional hand drumming! Helen has been traveling to Guinea for the past 21 years to study their music and culture. In this class\, you will learn basic rhythms on dunun drums and the djembe accompaniment parts. You will also learn the origins of each rhythm\, receive expert instruction on all instruments in the traditional djembe orchestra and deepen your understanding of the place of music\, dance\, and song in West African life. \nHelen is able to work simultaneously with students of all levels – from beginner to professional. All levels are welcome! Drums will be provided should you not have one. No experience is needed. \n \nDunun drums\, also known as djun-djun drums or talking drums\, are a family of West African bass drums that are played with sticks. They are commonly used in the traditional music of the Malinke people of Mali\, Guinea\, and other parts of West Africa. Dunun drums consist of three to five cylindrical drums of different sizes\, each with a different pitch\, and are typically played in ensembles with other percussion instruments such as the djembe and the balafon. They are often used to provide the bassline in West African music and are known for their deep\, resonant sound. Dunun drums are an important part of the cultural heritage of West Africa and are widely used in both traditional and contemporary music. \nThe djembe\, a rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands\, is thought to have originated from the Mandinka people in Guinea. The djembe was traditionally played by men and was used to accompany traditional dances and songs. The drum was also used as a tool for communication\, with different rhythms representing different messages. \nToday\, Guinean hand drumming remains popular both within Guinea and around the world. Many musicians and enthusiasts travel to Guinea to study with master drummers and to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Guinean hand drumming.

SUMMARY:Salsarobics
DESCRIPTION:Join Esther Gutierrez Sloan for fun workout! The major distinction of this program is that the joy\, fun\, and discovery are ongoing!! \nThe option of varying intensity levels from low to moderate to high is a choice that is ongoing throughout the class\, while moving to a myriad of enticing Latin\, Caribbean\, Spaniard and African beats.  Low impact and high impact options are also presented to choose from. \n-Esther offers an experience that averages  4000-4200 steps with varying degrees of intensity. \n-Total Body Training “TBT” Systems Methodology is used to maintain proper postural alignment and ensure muscular conditioning. \n-Pheripheral Heart Action PHA training methodology is used to work with aerobic intensity which is  optional and challenged based on the level that the participant chooses to execute the rhythmic steps \n-Using inline motion protocol\, moving from one end of the room to the other end makes the participant effectively and functionally use steps\, while working on balance and coordination by changing direction {lateral\, diagonal\, front\, backward). \nPropioceptive Neurological Facilitation PNF stretching is performed at end of session. \nThis class runs on Fridays\, 9:30am – 10:30am\n \nSALSArobics  was created by Colombian-born Esther Gutierrez Sloan.  Esther has performed SALSArobics on national television and local television in Illinois\, California\, Florida and New York. \nEsther has led SALSArobics classes\, exhibitions\, workshops and presentations at fitness conventions\, health clubs\, schools\, fundraising events\, ethnic festivals\, internationally and nationally. \nEsther was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2010 in recognition of her pioneering efforts to introduce authentic Latin rhythms and dance steps into aerobic exercise in 1989 when she created SALSArobics.

SUMMARY:LF Civic Orchestra Presents Voices of Spring
DESCRIPTION:The LFCO looks forward to spring! Two spring-time gardens are depicted to open our program. Mozart’s light and charming overture to La finta giardinera (“The Pretend Garden Girl”) contrasts Delius’s lush and romantic “A Walk to the Paradise Garden” from A Village\, Romeo and Juliet. We continue with Lily Boulanger’s a dreamy and atmospheric depiction of a spring morning in d’un matin de printemps (A Spring Morning) and Johann Strauss’s carefree set of waltzes entitled Voices of Spring. Our program closes with Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 which the composer himself said “must be filled with the longing for spring.” \nTickets $20 \nStudents and Seniors $10
