SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Strings Attached
DESCRIPTION:Strings Attached\nRendezvous Arts kicks off Season 7 with an audience favorite. But this time\, we’re adding strings! \nOur beloved Woodwind Octet returns—and it’s bigger than ever. Eleven musicians take the stage\, bringing even more color\, warmth\, and energy. The program blends familiar favorites with something completely new. \nAnd we mean completely new. \nLocal composer Scott Stevenson is creating a piece just for this ensemble. Nice Fresh will receive its world premiere at these performances. Rendezvous audiences will be among the first to hear this brand-new work\, written specifically for the musicians onstage. \nNext\, the program takes a playful turn with Jonathan Dove’s Figures in the Garden. This lively serenade for wind octet draws inspiration from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. The program also gets up close and personal with intimate performances by horn trio and cello and bass duo. \nThen comes a piece we’ve dreamed of bringing to Rendezvous for years: Antonín Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds in D Minor\, Op. 44. It’s warm\, lyrical\, joyful\, and full of personality. And with our expanded ensemble\, it’s the perfect way to launch a new season. \nA world premiere. Eleven musicians. Mozart reimagined. Dvořák at his most irresistible. \nStrings attached? Absolutely. \nFeatured Visual Artist: Fred Draper\nAdding another dimension to the program is featured visual artist Fred Draper\, whose work invites us to look more closely at the world around us. \nA perceptual artist drawn to the landscape and natural world\, Fred works across pastel\, drypoint printmaking\, drawing\, and painting. His work is rooted in careful observation\, exploring how the same subject can reveal something entirely different through a change in medium\, material\, or point of view. \nFred holds a BFA with a concentration in painting from Wright State University\, and his work has been exhibited in galleries across the country. \nIt’s a perfect fit for a program all about hearing familiar sounds in new ways. \n

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Christian Dillingham Jazz Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Christian Dillingham \nSome artists you simply have to bring back. Grammy-winning bassist Christian Dillingham is one of them. A Rendezvous Arts favorite for years\, Christian returns to close our sixth season with music from his acclaimed record Cascades alongside brand-new compositions currently in the works. His quartet features a powerhouse lineup: saxophonist Lenard Simpson\, guitarist Dave Miller\, and drummer Greg Artry. Together\, they create music that is both rooted and forward-looking\, rich with groove\, lyricism\, and discovery. \nJason Patrick Miller – Photographer\nOn the visual side\, Jason Patrick Miller transforms Chicago through the eye of a pinhole camera. His images\, printed on metal and altered through scratching\, rust\, and texture\, reimagine the city as something both raw and timeless. Miller’s work captures the weight of steel and structure\, while revealing the beauty of impermanence. The improvisatory spirit of his process mirrors the spontaneity of jazz\, making his art a striking companion to Dillingham’s sound. \n \nPhotography etched in metal. Jazz alive with invention. It is the perfect pairing and a powerful finale to Season Six.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Members of the St. Charles Singers
DESCRIPTION:Rendezvous Arts Presents: The St. Charles Singers\nMarch brings something new to Rendezvous – and it’s a milestone moment for us. For the first time\, we welcome a vocal ensemble: eight extraordinary voices from the internationally acclaimed St. Charles Singers\, led by conductor Jeff Hunt. \nYou’ve likely heard these artists before\, whether with the Chicago Symphony Chorus\, Grant Park Music Festival Chorus or Music of the Baroque Chorus. Now\, however\, they step into a more intimate setting where every harmony resonates and every detail shines. As a result\, the experience feels both powerful and personal. \nAlthough the choir tours internationally and earns acclaim around the world\, they remain proudly rooted in the western suburbs. This March\, they bring that global artistry to Dixon\, Lake Forest and Chicago\, offering a program that balances sweep and subtlety in equal measure. \nSomething for Everyone\nThis vibrant program spans centuries with clarity and energy. First\, the group will open with lively Renaissance madrigals like Fair Phyllis I Saw Sitting and Il est bel et bon. Next\, they will feature John Rutter’s In My Garden and Spin Me a Web\, Spider\, written for Saint Charles Singers and included on the upcoming recording Dancing Tree: Choral Landscapes. \nThey bring poetry to life in Ah\, Sunflower and celebrate folk traditions with selections by Gustav Holst and others from Bushes and Briars. Then\, they highlight works written for Saint Charles Singers and feature a quartet on The Longest Time. Finally\, the Saint Charles Singers close with bold\, uplifting favorites by Aaron Copland and Shawn Kirchner. \nAnd then there’s the twist: painter Tina Druce-Hoffman creates live art during the performance\, responding to what she hears in real time—so you’re not just attending a concert\, you’re watching music turn into color\, story\, and shape right in front of you. \nEight world-class artists come together on one stage\, shaping a single canvas of sound. Join us for one night only. \nTina Druce-Hoffman – Millinery Artist \nTina Druce-Hoffman’s career spans illustration\, graphic design\, and teaching\, with work featured in collectible card games\, books\, and countless exhibitions. She explores gouache\, watercolor\, etching\, and more\, always guided by insatiable curiosity. Whether outdoors capturing landscapes or at her easel crafting whimsical scenes\, her art invites us to pause\, reflect\, and enter an “elsewhere” just beyond the everyday. \n \nMusic that soars. Art that responds in the moment. This is a Rendezvous Arts debut you’ll want to witness.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Kaia String Quartet & Fareed Haque
DESCRIPTION:Kaia String Quartet + Fareed Haque = A Valentine’s Week Concert Filled with Passion and Art\n \nOn Valentine’s week\, we’re turning up the romance with a concert that feels like a love letter in sound. The Kaia String Quartet joins forces with guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque for an unforgettable evening of passion\, precision\, and pure joy. \nA Musical Journey of Love and Fire\nAt the heart of the program lies Haque’s own Quintet for Guitar and Strings\, Op. 60. This expressive work blends lyricism with fiery intensity\, capturing the spirit of love in every note. From there\, the journey continues with music by Latin American icons Ricardo Lorenz and Astor Piazzolla\, whose tangos are both smoldering and tender. Each melody tells a story of desire\, rhythm\, and emotion. \nAdding a touch of lightness\, Eduardo Angulo’s El Alevín (The Minnow) sparkles with playful energy—proof that even the smallest moments can hold deep feeling. Together\, these pieces create a concert that’s intimate\, uplifting\, and alive with heart. \nVisual Art by Margie Criner\nComplementing the music is the evening’s visual artist\, Chicago-based sculptor Margie Criner. At first glance\, her sculptures appear modern\, sleek and abstract. Yet\, as you move closer\, each piece reveals a lens portal – a tiny window into a hidden miniature world within. These micro-universes explore universal human moments: waiting\, traveling\, commuting\, and dreaming. Through her art\, Criner bridges design\, play\, and discovery\, inviting viewers to slow down\, look closer\, and uncover stories hidden in plain sight. \nAn Evening to Remember\nTogether\, Haque\, the Kaia String Quartet\, and Margie Criner create a multisensory experience that celebrates love\, creativity\, and connection. This Valentine’s concert promises to stir the soul and spark the imagination. It’s an inspiring night of art and music you won’t want to miss. \n  \n \nMusic that speaks in thousands of notes. Art that asks you to look twice and see more. It’s the kind of Valentine you’ll remember long after the last chord fades. 💖 \nAbout Rendezvous Arts\nRendezvous Arts is a Chicago-area arts organization dedicated to connecting people through live music and visual art. Guided by a passionate Board of Directors and creative staff\, we work to build community\, nurture emerging artists\, and inspire artistic excellence across the region. \nOur mission is simple: to make the arts accessible to everyone. Through concerts\, exhibitions\, and collaborative events\, we bring the joy of performance and creativity to audiences throughout Chicagoland. \nAt Rendezvous Arts\, we celebrate diversity\, inclusion\, and equal opportunity. We do not – and will not – discriminate based on race\, color\, religion\, gender identity\, age\, national origin\, disability\, marital status\, sexual orientation\, or military status. \nTogether\, we’re redefining what an arts organization can be—one that celebrates connection\, creativity\, and community through every note and brushstroke.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: True Colors Baroque Period
DESCRIPTION:True Colors Baroque Period\nStep into the moment when chamber music was just beginning to find its voice. This program traces the rise of the string quartet\, from playful Renaissance echoes to the fiery brilliance of Vivaldi. \nWe open with Clèment Janequin’s Birdsong motet\, a witty Renaissance gem that feels alive with fluttering wings and bright calls. From there\, the music deepens into the elegant architecture of baroque and classical four-part harmony. Haydn takes center stage as the undeniable Father of the String Quartet with one of his early Op. 20 works\, a daring and emotionally charged piece that stretches every instrument to its edge. Soon after\, Joseph Bologne—composer\, virtuoso\, and trailblazer—brings his French flair with a hauntingly beautiful Concertante Quartet in G minor. \nAnd then comes Vivaldi\, the master of drama and color. His music grounds the evening in both tenderness and fire: the meditative Largo for mandolin and strings\, followed by the electrifying “Winter” from The Four Seasons. It’s music that shimmers\, surprises\, and leaves you buzzing long after the final note. \nAaron Wooten – Painter\nSharing the stage is painter Aaron Wooten\, whose art finds joy in whimsy and the absurd. His cityscapes\, portraits\, and figures—painted on reclaimed wood—carry the same spirit of reinvention that lives in the music. Instruments are born from wood\, his paintings reclaim it\, and together they spark a conversation of sound and color you won’t forget. \n \nAbout Rendezvous Arts\nWith unwavering passion and boundless creativity\, the devoted Board of Directors and staff at Rendezvous Arts lead the charge in fostering a harmonious community\, nurturing emerging talent\, and inspiring artistic excellence. Together\, we strive to be an organization that redefines the boundaries of artistic expression and brings the gift of music and art to all corners of the Chicago area. \nWe value diversity and inclusion. We do not and will not discriminate on the basis of race\, color\, religion\, gender identity\, age\, national origin\, disability\, marital status\, sexual orientation\, or military status.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Woodwind Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:Woodwind Celebration!\nRendezvous Arts’ Season 6 opens with the kind of energy that sets the tone for the year: the Woodwind Celebration is back! What began as a surprising hit has become a signature favorite\, with an octet of 2 oboes\, 2 clarinets\, 2 French horns\, and 2 bassoons creating a sound that is rich\, layered\, and unforgettable. \nThis season’s program pairs the elegance of Josef Mysliveček’s Octet\, where each pair of instruments steps into the spotlight in luminous duets\, with the striking textures of Ruth Gipps’ Octet\, Op. 65\, a modern work that is bold yet intimate. The evening concludes with vibrant arrangements from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro\, bringing familiar melodies to life in a way that feels fresh and immediate. \nIt is the perfect way to open the season! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDan Grzeca – Visual Artist \nChicago’s own Dan Grzeca has built a reputation as one of the city’s most distinctive printmakers and illustrators. His work has appeared everywhere\, from the stages of The Black Keys\, Lollapalooza\, and Smashing Pumpkins to the covers of Three Floyds Brewing and local favorites such as The Beer Temple and Hop Butcher for the World. With thousands of posters and illustrations to his name\, Dan’s art is instantly recognizable for its bold energy and fearless creativity. \nThis season\, Dan is bringing that same spirit to Rendezvous. He will be designing a limited-edition poster exclusively for Season 6\, and you can be the very first to see it at our events. Even better\, you’ll have the chance to purchase one and take a piece of the celebration home. \nWe cannot wait to unveil what Dan has created for us\, and we know it will capture the spirit of Rendezvous in a way only he can! \n \nAbout Rendezvous Arts\nWith unwavering passion and boundless creativity\, the devoted Board of Directors and staff at Rendezvous Arts lead the charge in fostering a harmonious community\, nurturing emerging talent\, and inspiring artistic excellence. SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts Axiom Brass Quintet
DESCRIPTION:We are beyond excited to bring back the Axiom Brass Quintet\, who wowed us during our Season One events at the height of the pandemic. This time\, you have the chance to experience them live! Their program “Love\, Mystery and Despair”  is a passionate affair with the romance\, mystery\, and intrigue of Latin Music. Highlighting Piazzola’s mastery of tangos\, Cacilda Borges Borbosa’s luscious harmonies\, and a new bossa-nova-inspired composition from Lillian Lee\, Axiom explores the vast wealth of musical idioms from Latin origins. \n The quintet features Dorival Puccini and Christopher Scanlon on trumpets\, Alex Laskey on French horn\, Corey Sansolo on trombone\, and Serena Voltz on tuba. \nFriday night concert timeline / Concessions for sale\, including beer & wine \n7:00-8:15 PM concert (no intermission)\n8:15-8:45 PM conversation with artists \nAdding to the magic of the evening\, we are delighted to showcase artist Donna Castellanos. She received a degree in graphic design from The American Academy of Art in Chicago and worked in advertising for 5 years. Soon she realized she hated it—and put down the keyboard and picked up a paintbrush! Donna creates in a wide range of mediums but her true love is creating pieces from found objects that she rescues from estate sales and thrift shops. She incorporates these once-loved treasures into her paintings\, sculptures\, jewelry\, and clothing. Donna will also bring an interactive art project to the events—audience members will get the opportunity to create! Intrigued? We know we are!

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Kontras String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:  \nFriday night concert timeline / Concessions for sale\, including beer & wine \n7:00-8:15 PM Concert (no intermission)\n8:15-8:45 PM Conversation with artists \n \nLet’s ring in the new year with the Kontras String Quartet! Their attention to detail\, high energy\, and creative programming brought down the house in their past Rendezvous performances—and we know you’ll be glad you braved the cold weather to experience them again this year! Eleanor Bartsch and Francois Henkins on violin\, Ben Weber on viola\, and Jean Hatmaker on cello will bring a new and exciting program for you to enjoy! \nMillicent Kennedy‘s interdisciplinary art practice responds to found objects\, chosen places and the history embedded in material. From broken donated\ntools encased in archival shrouds honoring workers\, to window bars and security gates that maintain the thin veil of private property\, the items their\npractice engages are part of the thematic grounding of the work. A frequent modality of Kennedy’s work is stitching objects into textiles that\nthey have printed with natural dyes. The process of hand sewing around materials creates a fitted but obscured form. The process has a\ntransformative quality\, allowing for the possibility to think about broken things differently\, or consider how seeing a boundary that is not always\nvisible changes it. \nMillicent Kennedy’s (they/them) practice is interested in how we archive a physical world in flux. Through skills both laborious and ancient including\nbook and box making\, natural dye and hand stitching\, Kennedy connects to the knowledge of generations of unknown hands who worked to hold their\nworld together. Their work as a whole is interested in connecting two or more things that could seem separate or worn away from one another. Like\ndyeing and mending\, the alchemy is in the labor and material itself\, that leads to transformation. \n \n  \n \n \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Kaia String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Kaia String Quartet: \nFrom the tango of the Rio de la Plata to the string quartets of Silvestre Revueltas\, the KAIA String Quartet is an ensemble devoted to promoting the rich and colorful music of Latin America. \nThe Quartet plays an active role in Chicago’s music scene and has performed at the Chicago Latino Music Festival\, the Ear Taxi Festival\, and Chamber Music on the Fox. In 2017\, KAIA was the first ensemble in residence at Chicago’s classical radio station\, WFMT. \nCelebrated by Downbeat magazine for its ability to “beautifully blur the lines between jazz\, classical\, Latin and world music” KAIA’s album collaboration with Fareed Haque was chosen by Chicago Tribune’s Howard Reich as one of the top ten classical recordings of 2018. Their album\, Sureño\, explores the music and relationship of Argentinian composers Astor Piazzolla and José Bragato. The latest recording project released in 2020 includes a collaboration with jazz pianist Ryan Cohan in his work Originations.\nKAIA is deeply devoted to music education. They are teaching artists for Ravinia’s Reach*Teach*Play program and for the International Music Foundation’s Live Music Now program. KAIA founded DePaul University’s Community Music Division chamber program where they inspire the next generation of performers. \nFriday night concert timeline / Concessions for sale\, including beer & wine \n7:00-8:15 PM concert (no intermission)\n8:15-8:45 PM conversation with artists \nPainter by: Ken Reif \n“The truth will set you free.” For me that truth is in my artwork. Turning two dimensional surfaces into compositions that evoke emotion. Painting and the instruction I have received has changed the way I view the world. I am set free every time I stand at the easel. I am set free when I look through the Artist eye. I am set free to create. \nAt an early age I formed a deep respect for nature\, a respect I transfer to canvas. I am also a musician and my love of music compels me to paint portraits of musicians too.  I begin the process with priming the surface black then using an impressionist palette I create my work. Capturing through the Artist eye vibrant colors which evokes emotion\, causing the viewer to pause\, to think and to enjoy in the now.\nI consider my work to be “Renewable Energy”. The viewer is renewed with each viewing\, much like listening to your favorite music. \n \nThis is part of the Rendezvous Arts Series

Her work features re-purposed materials\, saturated color\, and improvisation\, utilizing surface design\, collage with found objects and energetic machine stitching. \nPat creates contemporary fiber art with machine-stitched\, hand-dyed and commercial fiber fragments. She is fascinated with intense saturated color with a focus on cast-off\, and re-purposed materials. She creates entire surfaces of color using fiber\, and textural elements. Each work is then energetically machine-stitched. Pat is interested in the notion of how we assign value to things. Sometimes\, humble materials play a more important role than one would imagine. She has always been intrigued with non-traditional materials. Quilts and clothing act as functional and necessary items in society for warmth\, protection and comfort\, adding beauty and decorative components through skillful craftsmanship. Made playfully from recycled\, and cast-off materials\, her work often explores the notion of need. \nThis is part of the Rendezvous \nArts Series \n  \n  \n  \n

Colored pencils allow her to play with successive layers of pigments to add depth\, saturation and energy to her drawings. When she uses black ink only\, the striking contrast creates bold\, graphic compositions. In each piece\, she invites us to connect with our own imaginary theater\, with sometimes\, a soupçon of drama! \nWERIEM known as Meriem Bahri\, is a French and Tunisian artist praised for her gorgeous and evocative\, spectacular and sumptuous array of period-perfect costumes by the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, Chicago Tribune\, respectively. With a decade of experience designing costumes for live performances (including the Royal Swedish Opera\, the Boston Early Music Festival\, Haymarket Opera\, Opera Lafayette)\, her drawings have also been featured as projections during concerts\, CD covers\, and other commissioned illustrations. She was born in a family of geologists and from the first days of her life was surrounded by the romanticism of scientific expeditions and the beauty of Siberian nature. Inna graduated from one of the most prestigious art schools of the region in the mid 90’s and tried herself in graphic design and jewelry making\,  participating in multiple projects and exhibitions.  In 2004 Inna relocated to the USA and married Alex Deriy\, and engineer by day and artist and musician by night. \nMoving away from home and traditional oil and pastels Inna joined her creative forces with her husband Alex. They started developing a new technique of painting with pigmented polymers and tried applying it to stone\, glass\, canvas and wood.  Stained glass look of her newly developed works slightly resembles warm and earthy collages made of natural stones that Inna’s parents used to bring back from their geological expeditions. Natural beauty of minerals has always been the couple’s main inspiration. \nThis is part of Rendezvous Arts Series \n\n \n\n\n\n
