SUMMARY:Tai Chi
DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi is an inclusive form of exercise that anyone can do\, whether you are in peak shape\, or have limited mobility. Despite its slow pace\, it is a valuable exercise for all ages\, read about the health benefits below. Dress comfortably and be prepared to have fun in Ken’s class. \nHealth Benefits \nTai Chi has numerous health benefits. It is good for balance\, flexibility\, and stress – regular Tai Chi practice can improve overall physical health and well-being. In fact\, Harvard Health suggests Tai Chi might be “…the perfect activity for the rest of your life.” \nAs a form of exercise\, researchers in Toronto found it is equivalent to brisk walking. So\, instead of worrying about your steps (how boring)\, join Ken’s class and have some more fun while you exercise. \nUnlike other forms of exercise\, Tai Chi movements are performed with relaxed muscles and a focus on deep breathing. Slow and gentle\, Tai Chi can improve blood flow\, balance\, and relaxation. Each Tai Chi pose flows into the next with circular\, continuous movements. This helps improve your balance and flexibility without putting strain on muscles and joints. \nTai Chi is also a very social activity\, commonly practiced in groups that rhythmically synchronize slow movements with deep breathing. Like meditation\, Tai Chi creates a calm and focused mind and can create a state of mindfulness. \nTai Chi also benefits emotional well-being and mental health. Regular Tai Chi practice can improve concentration\, physical self-awareness\, and create a sense of inner peace. Tai chi is a great exercise for relieving stress and has been shown to benefit hypertension and high blood pressure. \nWhat is Tai Chi? \nIt is a Chinese traditional exercise that blends martial arts’ movement with meditation. Dating back a thousand years\, Tai Chi remains a popular activity in China and around the world. \nTai Chi is a series of slow\, choreographed martial arts movements and poses. Tai Chi poses are circular and continuous\, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and maintaining a centered and grounded posture. Tai Chi poses mimic the movements of animals or nature\, such as flowing water or a bird in flight.  \nKen has been practicing martial arts for 27 years\, and started Tai Chi training in 1996 with Sifu Dale Washington\, Sifu Ban Toy in 2000 and Grand Master Yang Jun in 2006. He has been practicing Tai Chi for 21 years and teaching Tai Chi for 12 years. In 2016\, he received a Gold Eagle certificate from Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association. certificate. Ken is also one of Grand Master Yang Jun’s Disciples for the Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. He teaches Kickboxing and Full-contact Martial Arts teacher and is certified by Ng Family Martial Arts Association.

SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival Closing Night Feature: ALL SKATE
DESCRIPTION:The Lake County Film Festival returns in 2026 for its Sweet 16 edition\, celebrating sixteen years of independent cinema with a diverse\, ambitious\, and international slate of feature and short films. The festival runs March 12–23\, 2026.\nThis year’s festival will screen films at three venues: the College of Lake County in Grayslake\, Gorton Center in Lake Forest\, and — for the first time — the Antioch Theater in Antioch\, expanding the festival’s footprint and access across Lake County. \nGorton Center is proud to be hosting the closing night feature film\, “All Skate”!\nALL SKATE is the full history of roller rinks and roller skating as told by a diverse group of people who are currently involved with roller skating and rinks\, and through my point of view having grown up in a roller rink built by my grandfather. \nWe cover everything from the early inline skating inventions\, the patented Plimpton four-wheel design which prevailed\, and then go though multiple phases of popularity including 1920s skaters including vaudeville performers and silent films\, professional roller sports\, the Skating Vanities\, the 40s/50s during and post WWII when we expanded to over 5000 mostly family-owned roller rinks in the US\, to the huge 1970s roller disco era\, the return of roller blades in the 80s. \nWe also visit the times of decline over the years\, especially since the 2000s\, and the reasons many rinks couldn’t survive\, visiting many former roller rinks to see what the buildings hold today\, including retail stores\, homeless shelters\, and a sad return to my family’s rink which is now an indoor shooting range. But we end on a high note\, with the amazing roller skating resurgence brought on by Covid\, including skating in the Super Bowl for the first time ever in 2024. \nDocumentary • USA • 2026 • 102 Minutes\nDirector: April Wright\nWriter: April Wright\nProducer: April Wright\nEditor: April Wright\nCinematographers: Joe Farris\, Dustin Perlman\, Bryan Sarkinen\, JT Seaton\, April Wright\nArchivist: Ronda Nissen\nSubjects: Park Roller Rink (Zion\, IL)\, Myesha McCaskill “The Skate Guru of Chicago\,” Jim Turner (Co-Founder National Museum of Roller Skating) at Butler Skateland (Racine\, WI)\, Guptill’s Arena (Albany\, NY – Guinness Book World’s Largest)\, Roller Wave in Brooklyn NY\, Moonlight Rollerway (Glendale\, CA)\, Oaks Park Rink (Portland\, OR – open since 1906)

SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival: Nuisance Bear
DESCRIPTION:The Lake County Film Festival returns in 2026 for its Sweet 16 edition\, celebrating sixteen years of independent cinema with a diverse\, ambitious\, and international slate of feature and short films. The festival runs March 12–23\, 2026. \nThis year’s festival will screen films at three venues: the College of Lake County in Grayslake\, Gorton Center in Lake Forest\, and — for the first time — the Antioch Theater in Antioch\, expanding the festival’s footprint and access across Lake County. \nGorton Center is proud to be one of the screening venues for “Nuisance Bear”!\nFrom the Sundance Film Festival program: \nA polar bear is forced to navigate a human world of tourists\, wildlife officers\, and hunters as its ancient migration collides with modern life. When a sacred predator is branded a nuisance\, it becomes unclear who truly belongs in this shared landscape. \nFilmmakers Gabriela Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman return to Churchill\, Manitoba — affectionately known as the “Polar Bear Capital of the World” — to deepen the inquiry begun in their award-winning short film. The result is a striking portrait of the fraught coexistence between polar bears and humans\, guided by an Inuit narrator whose insights resist simplification. \nThe film traces this relationship with nuance\, revealing how these arctic creatures deal with being constantly monitored\, photographed\, and redirected. There is a thrill in watching a polar bear outwit human efforts to contain it\, underscoring the bears’ resilience and the fragility of the systems that attempt to control them. \nBy challenging the conventions of a nature documentary and favoring confrontation over moralism\, Nuisance Bear invites us to reconsider our assumptions about wildlife as spectacle. \nDocumentary • USA • 2026 • 90 Minutes\nDirectors: Gabriela Osio Vanden & Jack Weisman\nProducers: Michael Code\, Will N.

SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival: THE LAST DIVE
DESCRIPTION:The Lake County Film Festival returns in 2026 for its Sweet 16 edition\, celebrating sixteen years of independent cinema with a diverse\, ambitious\, and international slate of feature and short films. The festival runs March 12–23\, 2026. \nThis year’s festival will screen films at three venues: the College of Lake County in Grayslake\, Gorton Center in Lake Forest\, and — for the first time — the Antioch Theater in Antioch\, expanding the festival’s footprint and access across Lake County. \nGorton Center is proud to be one of the screening venues for “The Last Dive”!\nTerry is a legendary figure in Baja Mexico\, an American veteran who has spent decades living on—and in—the water. Once a man burdened by a troubled past\, Terry’s life was transformed by an unlikely friendship with Willy\, a 22-foot oceanic manta ray. For nearly two decades\, Willy would slap his wings against the hull of Terry’s sailboat to signal their next dive\, and together they explored the ocean’s depths—an extraordinary bond that turned Terry into an unexpected conservationist. \nNow in his 80’s\, Terry embarks on one final journey to a remote island in hopes of reuniting with his old friend. But he’s also searching for something deeper: peace\, closure\, and a chance to say goodbye. \nDocumentary • USA • 2025 • 91 Minutes\nDirector: Cody Sheehy\nWriter: Mark Monroe\nProducers: Randy Gebhardt\, Christopher Gebhardt\,\nEditor: Lauren Brinkman\nComposer: Paul Leonard-Morgan\nCast: Terrance Kennedy \nFestivals: Tribeca\, DocEdge\, Boston Film Festival\, Newport Beach\, Anchorage

SUMMARY:Take Your Painting to the Next Level
DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your painting to the next level?\nThis class is ideal for artists who already have some experience painting in Oil\, Acrylic\, Gouache\, or Pastel and are ready to grow their skills further. If you’ve been wanting to turn a photo into a painting or have started a piece but feel unsure about how to move forward\, this is the perfect opportunity to get expert guidance and renewed inspiration. \nEach student brings in either a reference photo or an unfinished painting to work on during class. From there\, artist and instructor Michael Latala provides hands-on\, individualized instruction to help you make confident artistic decisions. First\, he’ll show you how to evaluate your photo reference—guiding you in choosing what elements to include and what to leave out. Then\, through clear demonstrations\, he’ll help you resolve common issues like washed-out highlights or areas that have gone too dark to read. \nThroughout the class\, Michael gives each student personal attention. If you’d prefer to keep your canvas untouched\, he’s happy to demonstrate his suggestions digitally using Procreate on his iPad Pro. This digital approach allows you to visualize changes before applying them\, which can be especially helpful when exploring different color choices or compositional edits. \nImportantly\, this class is all about progress at your own pace. There’s no pressure to finish quickly. Instead\, you’re encouraged to slow down\, focus on what you’re learning\, and enjoy the process. With consistent support and practice\, you’ll discover how to turn your ideas into beautiful\, well-executed paintings—just the way you imagined them. \nThis series is a total of 8 sessions\, all will be 7 – 9:30pm

SUMMARY:THE CREATIVITY CHOICE: THE SCIENCE OF MAKING DECISIONS TO TURN IDEAS INTO ACTION.
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who has ever participated in a brainstorming session knows that most of us do not lack ideas. Yet many people never breathe life into them. To turn inspiration into real achievement\, you must decide to act—and then decide to act again and again\, despite obstacles\, until your thoughts take shape and come to life. This is what psychologist Zorana Ivcevic Pringle\, Ph.D.\, calls the creativity choice. \nIn her new book The Creativity Choice: The Science of Making Decisions to Turn Ideas into Action\, Pringle—a senior research scientist at Yale University’s Center for Emotional Intelligence—draws on twenty years of research to dispel one of our most stubborn myths: that creativity is an innate gift reserved for the Albert Einsteins\, Steve Jobses\, and Coco Chanels of the world. In fact\, creativity is a decision. And it is one that anyone can learn to make. \nWith stories ranging from an entrepreneur who built a national nonprofit\, to a YouTuber who turned a hobby into a professional career\, to a business leader who established a company culture of innovation\, Pringle illuminates how people make creative ideas happen. She shows what it takes to get started\, the psychological and emotional tools needed to navigate the creative process\, and the social conditions that allow creativity to flourish—from the casual relationships that spark unexpected ideas\, to the close bonds that sustain risk-taking and perseverance. \nAmong her key insights: problem finding matters more than problem solving; emotions are not obstacles to creativity but valuable information that can be strategically harnessed; and the difference between a one-hit wonder and a consistent innovator often comes down to the quality of one’s social network. Pringle also explores why people who genuinely want to be creative so often avoid it\, and how accepting the anxiety that accompanies originality is itself the first creative act. \nPringle studies the role of emotion\, emotional intelligence\, and self-regulation in creativity and well-being\, as well as how to use the arts (and art-related institutions) to promote emotion and creativity skills. She will be in conversation with Marc Brackett\, Ph.D. (FAN ’19\, ’25)\, the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence\, a professor in the Child Study Center at Yale University\, and the author of the 2019 bestselling book Permission to Feel and 2025’s Dealing with Feeling. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Approaches to End of Life Care and Grief Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Discussing Death\nDying Well sparks honest\, engaging conversations about death and dying. This seminar allows participants to examine how society talks about – and often avoids – the end of life. Other topics include gaps in our care systems and the definition and use of palliative and hospice care. \nYou will learn to navigate death as a unique\, personal process while acquiring tools to make meaningful end-of-life decisions. \nThis seminar welcomes anyone ready to face mortality with clarity and courage and includes those living with serious illness\, loved ones supporting someone at the end of life\, and anyone preparing their own care with intention. \nKey Questions We Will Explore\n\nHow can we navigate the death of a loved one with understanding and compassion? And how can we manage the emotions that follow?\nIn turn\, how might we envision and honor our own dying process?\nFurthermore\, what does a “good death” mean? How can we shape it to reflect our values?\nFinally\, how can we uphold what matters most – personally and culturally – as someone nears the end of life?\n\nThis is not a therapy session. Instead\, it is a candid\, interactive discussion. We will examine the physical and emotional processes of dying. By creating a space for open exploration\, participants will leave feeling empowered. They will approach end-of-life decisions with greater clarity\, confidence\, and compassion. \n \nLara N. Dotson-Renta\, PhD is a longtime writer\, educator and scholar of languages (Spanish and French). She is also a 500hr RYT yoga instructor with trauma informed yoga training through The Veteran’s Yoga Project and children’s yoga training from Full of Joy Yoga in CT. She is also a trained death doula through INELDA (The International End of Life Doula Association).

SUMMARY:EVERYBODY'S FLY: ART\, MUSIC\, AND CHANGING THE CULTURE
DESCRIPTION:Blondie’s declaration on their 1980 hit “Rapture” introduced listeners around the world to Fred Brathwaite\, also known as Fab 5 Freddy\, a pioneering cultural icon whose fearless creativity reshaped the worlds of art\, style\, and music. Next spring\, Viking is proud to publish his electrifying memoir Everybody’s Fly: A Life of Art\, Music\, and Changing the Culture. \nEverybody’s Fly is an essential\, street-level cultural history from one of our most curious\, passionate\, and inspiring minds still working today. Picking up where Patti Smith’s Just Kids leaves off\, it offers an intimate look into how New York’s underground art and music scene—guided by Fab’s singular vision of what could be possible— irrevocably transformed mainstream culture from the late 1970s to today. \nBecause Fab doesn’t just have a great story—he is the story. Name a seismic cultural shift of the last five decades\, and chances are\, he wasn’t just there—he was making it happen. He’s the graffiti artist who turned subway tags into fine art\, showing his work most recently at the Saatchi Gallery in London; the visionary behind the first hip-hop movie; the bridge between Jean-Michel Basquiat and the downtown punk scene; the first person to take rap global on MTV as the original host of Yo! MTV Raps; the director behind iconic music videos for Snoop Dog\, Nas\, Queen Latifah\, and KRS-One; and\, of course\, the inspiration for the opening rhyme of Blondie’s number one smash hit “Rapture”—the song that propelled hip-hop from the Bronx to popular culture for the first time. With a spirit of joyful creativity\, he shattered racial and artistic boundaries\, bridging worlds and bringing underground movements to the mainstream. \nVibrant\, rhapsodic\, and compulsively readable\, Everybody’s Fly is a love letter to the art of seeing\, a fascinating account of an inimitable creative life\, and a celebration of what it means to shape culture. \nFab will be in conversation with Theaster Gates\, world-renowned artist\, archivist\, social innovator\, and professor and Special Advisor to the President at the University of Chicago. Gates creates work that focuses on space theory and land development\, sculpture\, and performance. \nBonus Book Giveaway: FAN is giving away copies of Everybody’s Fly to attendees\, while supplies last. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. It will be recorded but not live streamed and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Rendezvous Arts: Members of the St. Charles Singers
DESCRIPTION:Rendezvous Arts Presents: The St. Charles Singers\nMarch brings something new to Rendezvous – and it’s a milestone moment for us. For the first time\, we welcome a vocal ensemble: eight extraordinary voices from the internationally acclaimed St. Charles Singers\, led by conductor Jeff Hunt. \nYou’ve likely heard these artists before\, whether with the Chicago Symphony Chorus\, Grant Park Music Festival Chorus or Music of the Baroque Chorus. Now\, however\, they step into a more intimate setting where every harmony resonates and every detail shines. As a result\, the experience feels both powerful and personal. \nAlthough the choir tours internationally and earns acclaim around the world\, they remain proudly rooted in the western suburbs. This March\, they bring that global artistry to Dixon\, Lake Forest and Chicago\, offering a program that balances sweep and subtlety in equal measure. \nSomething for Everyone\nThis vibrant program spans centuries with clarity and energy. First\, the group will open with lively Renaissance madrigals like Fair Phyllis I Saw Sitting and Il est bel et bon. Next\, they will feature John Rutter’s In My Garden and Spin Me a Web\, Spider\, written for Saint Charles Singers and included on the upcoming recording Dancing Tree: Choral Landscapes. \nThey bring poetry to life in Ah\, Sunflower and celebrate folk traditions with selections by Gustav Holst and others from Bushes and Briars. Then\, they highlight works written for Saint Charles Singers and feature a quartet on The Longest Time. Finally\, the Saint Charles Singers close with bold\, uplifting favorites by Aaron Copland and Shawn Kirchner. \nAnd then there’s the twist: painter Tina Druce-Hoffman creates live art during the performance\, responding to what she hears in real time—so you’re not just attending a concert\, you’re watching music turn into color\, story\, and shape right in front of you. \nEight world-class artists come together on one stage\, shaping a single canvas of sound. Join us for one night only. \nTina Druce-Hoffman – Millinery Artist \nTina Druce-Hoffman’s career spans illustration\, graphic design\, and teaching\, with work featured in collectible card games\, books\, and countless exhibitions. She explores gouache\, watercolor\, etching\, and more\, always guided by insatiable curiosity. Whether outdoors capturing landscapes or at her easel crafting whimsical scenes\, her art invites us to pause\, reflect\, and enter an “elsewhere” just beyond the everyday. \n \nMusic that soars. Art that responds in the moment. This is a Rendezvous Arts debut you’ll want to witness.

SUMMARY:DOPAMINE KIDS: A SCIENCE-BASED PLAN TO REWIRE YOUR CHILD'S BRAIN AND TAKE BACK YOUR FAMILY IN THE AGE OF SCREENS AND ULTRAPROCESSED FOODS
DESCRIPTION:Nearly everything you’ve heard about dopamine is wrong. It’s not the molecule of happiness — it doesn’t give us pleasure; it gives us motivation. Today\, unprecedented “dopamine surges” pull us toward technology and ultraprocessed foods like magnets\, many times a day\, and neuroscientists have now begun to understand how these surges alter our choices\, habits\, and moods — driving adults and kids toward activities that bring no real enjoyment and leave us feeling sad\, lonely\, anxious\, and depressed. \nWhen Michaeleen Doucleff\, Ph.D. (FAN ’21)\, set out to address her own family’s screen time and dependence on processed foods\, she discovered that study after study refuted nearly everything the media claims about dopamine. She took that new neuroscience and merged it with practical experience to shift the power dynamic back to families — so that instead of devices and foods controlling us\, we control them. The result is Dopamine Kids: A Science-Based Plan to Rewire Your Child’s Brain and Take Back Your Family in the Age of Screens and Ultraprocessed Foods\, a five-step operating manual for habit remodeling that helps parents create boundaries\, replace screen time with equally enticing alternatives\, remove triggers\, and celebrate new choices — ultimately weakening the neurological pull of devices and making dopamine work in a family’s favor. \nDoucleff’s research culminates in a four-week plan to build screen-free sanctuaries that protect conversation\, focus\, sleep\, and adventure. Where Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation sounded the alarm about screens\, Dopamine Kids is the handbook for solving the problem — teaching kids a healthy relationship with technology and food while meeting their genuine biological and emotional needs. Doucleff has a chemistry doctorate from UC Berkeley\, a postdoctoral fellowship at the NIH\, more than a decade covering children’s health for NPR’s science desk\, a Peabody Award\, and the New York Times bestseller Hunt\, Gather\, Parent. \nDoucleff will be in conversation with Heidi Stevens\, Director of External Affairs for the University of Chicago’s TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health. She writes a weekly nationally syndicated column\, “Balancing Act.” Stevens has been a FAN board member since 2021. \nBonus Book Giveaway: FAN is giving away copies of Dopamine Kids to randomly selected Zoom attendees. Details on the webinar registration page. \nThis event is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. It will be recorded and available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.
