DESCRIPTION:If all children could just get an education\, the logic goes\, they would have the same opportunities later in life. But this historical tour de force makes it clear that the opposite is true: The U.S. school system has played an instrumental role in creating and upholding racial hierarchies and racism\, preparing children to expect unequal treatment throughout their lives. \nIn her new bestselling book Original Sins: The (Mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism\, Eve L. Ewing\, Ed.D. (FAN ’18) demonstrates that our schools were designed to propagate the idea of white intellectual superiority\, to “civilize” Native students and to prepare Black students for menial labor. Education was not an afterthought for the Founding Fathers; it was envisioned by Thomas Jefferson as an institution that would fortify the country’s racial hierarchy. Ewing argues that these dynamics persist in a curriculum that continues to minimize the horrors of American history. The most insidious aspects of this system fall below the radar in the forms of standardized testing\, academic tracking\, disciplinary policies\, and uneven access to resources. \nBy demonstrating that it’s in the DNA of American schools to serve as an effective and underacknowledged mechanism maintaining inequality in this country today\, Ewing makes the case that we need a profound reevaluation of what schools are supposed to do\, and for whom. This book will change the way people understand the place we send our children for eight hours a day. \nEwing is an associate professor in the Department of Race\, Diaspora\, and Indigeneity at the University of Chicago and the author of four books\, including Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Racism and School Closings on Chicago’s South Side. Many early Celtic and pre-Christian designs are reproduced on carousels and carousel animals. Her interest in ancient and contemporary mythology has led her to research mountain storytelling\, initiating more travel and recent storytelling\, herself. Lisa has been telling Highland Park\, Lake Forest\, and several venues in Chicago. For fun\, Lisa also restores antique wood toys and sports cars\, which she drives with vigor and nostalgia.​ \n  \n

Unforgiving Places: The Unexpected Origins of American Gun Violence is Ludwig’s revelatory portrait of gun violence in America’s most famously maligned city. \nDisproving the popular narrative that shootings are the calculated acts of malicious or desperate people\, Ludwig shows how most shootings grow out of a more fleeting source: interpersonal conflict\, especially arguments. By examining why some arguments turn tragic while others don’t\, Ludwig shows gun violence to be more circumstantial—and more solvable—than our traditional approaches lead us to believe. \nDrawing on decades of research and Ludwig’s immersive fieldwork in Chicago\, Unforgiving Places is a breakthrough work at the cutting edge of behavioral economics. DESCRIPTION:Learning to breathe is an art form.  Allowing the breath to center and rebalance the body & mind is a practice.  Meditation helps to focus our energy and enhance our lives. Practicing breath and meditation can help with a variety of intentions including relaxation\, stress reduction\, focusing\, intention setting\, directing energy and more. \nEach session we learn how to use the breath in new ways to experience the life force within us and help to direct our energy through intentions. SUMMARY:Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Educator Yvonne Wolf gives a brief background on the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine\, including three main principles of its purpose. She will relate this ancient study to Western traditions and introduce 5 common roots and herbs that are meaningful and useful in Chinese Traditional Medicine such as ginger\, ginseng\, and licorice. She will show samples of these common herbs and roots in their dried forms. If you have been curious but not quite confident about trying Chinese herbal medicine\, this presentation will be the first step towards an alternative path to health. \nIntercultural consultant and educator Yvonne Wolf specializes in bringing an element of Chinese culture to a relatable understanding.  She has given talks at libraries\, museums\, and community centers. Yvonne’s thoughtful consideration serves to enrich her entertaining presentations. \nYvonne generously shares the knowledge and skills she has gained from her experiences living in four different countries where she became fluent in three languages: Chinese (Mandarin)\, English\, and Danish. She worked as a bilingual analyst in a Japanese global corporation in Denmark and served as a global language trainer in Japan. She is also well traveled in the States and Canada. She has ten years’ experience working as an organizational consultant in Los Angeles mediating cross cultural misunderstandings. She continues her work in the Greater Chicago area.

DESCRIPTION:Paint and draw with Joalida in her art studio at the Gorton Center! In this on-going class Joalida works with teens exploring different mediums\, techniques and subject matter to discover their art style. These classes are unstructured\, meeting your teen where they are in their art development and guiding them through individual attention to become more confident in their art making. All materials are provided. Ages 11 – 17 \n*Please note this is an art development class\, not an after school club. Prior art experience and a keen interest in art required.  Your teen will be asked to leave if they cannot adhere to the rules of the art room. \nJoalida Smit is a Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist who lived and worked in London (UK) and Cape Town (SA) for the past 20 years. She pivoted to full time artist during COVID and now runs an art studio at The Gorton Center working on large scale canvases. Currently she is exploring innovative ways to incorporate art in the psychology work of personal transformation.
