SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival Closing Night Feature: ALL SKATE
DESCRIPTION:The Lake County Film Festival returns in 2026 for its Sweet 16 edition\, celebrating sixteen years of independent cinema with a diverse\, ambitious\, and international slate of feature and short films. The festival runs March 12–23\, 2026.\nThis year’s festival will screen films at three venues: the College of Lake County in Grayslake\, Gorton Center in Lake Forest\, and — for the first time — the Antioch Theater in Antioch\, expanding the festival’s footprint and access across Lake County. \nGorton Center is proud to be hosting the closing night feature film\, “All Skate”!\nALL SKATE is the full history of roller rinks and roller skating as told by a diverse group of people who are currently involved with roller skating and rinks\, and through my point of view having grown up in a roller rink built by my grandfather. \nWe cover everything from the early inline skating inventions\, the patented Plimpton four-wheel design which prevailed\, and then go though multiple phases of popularity including 1920s skaters including vaudeville performers and silent films\, professional roller sports\, the Skating Vanities\, the 40s/50s during and post WWII when we expanded to over 5000 mostly family-owned roller rinks in the US\, to the huge 1970s roller disco era\, the return of roller blades in the 80s. \nWe also visit the times of decline over the years\, especially since the 2000s\, and the reasons many rinks couldn’t survive\, visiting many former roller rinks to see what the buildings hold today\, including retail stores\, homeless shelters\, and a sad return to my family’s rink which is now an indoor shooting range. But we end on a high note\, with the amazing roller skating resurgence brought on by Covid\, including skating in the Super Bowl for the first time ever in 2024. \nDocumentary • USA • 2026 • 102 Minutes\nDirector: April Wright\nWriter: April Wright\nProducer: April Wright\nEditor: April Wright\nCinematographers: Joe Farris\, Dustin Perlman\, Bryan Sarkinen\, JT Seaton\, April Wright\nArchivist: Ronda Nissen\nSubjects: Park Roller Rink (Zion\, IL)\, Myesha McCaskill “The Skate Guru of Chicago\,” Jim Turner (Co-Founder National Museum of Roller Skating) at Butler Skateland (Racine\, WI)\, Guptill’s Arena (Albany\, NY – Guinness Book World’s Largest)\, Roller Wave in Brooklyn NY\, Moonlight Rollerway (Glendale\, CA)\, Oaks Park Rink (Portland\, OR – open since 1906)

SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival: Nuisance Bear
DESCRIPTION:The Lake County Film Festival returns in 2026 for its Sweet 16 edition\, celebrating sixteen years of independent cinema with a diverse\, ambitious\, and international slate of feature and short films. The festival runs March 12–23\, 2026. \nThis year’s festival will screen films at three venues: the College of Lake County in Grayslake\, Gorton Center in Lake Forest\, and — for the first time — the Antioch Theater in Antioch\, expanding the festival’s footprint and access across Lake County. \nGorton Center is proud to be one of the screening venues for “Nuisance Bear”!\nFrom the Sundance Film Festival program: \nA polar bear is forced to navigate a human world of tourists\, wildlife officers\, and hunters as its ancient migration collides with modern life. When a sacred predator is branded a nuisance\, it becomes unclear who truly belongs in this shared landscape. \nFilmmakers Gabriela Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman return to Churchill\, Manitoba — affectionately known as the “Polar Bear Capital of the World” — to deepen the inquiry begun in their award-winning short film. The result is a striking portrait of the fraught coexistence between polar bears and humans\, guided by an Inuit narrator whose insights resist simplification. \nThe film traces this relationship with nuance\, revealing how these arctic creatures deal with being constantly monitored\, photographed\, and redirected. There is a thrill in watching a polar bear outwit human efforts to contain it\, underscoring the bears’ resilience and the fragility of the systems that attempt to control them. \nBy challenging the conventions of a nature documentary and favoring confrontation over moralism\, Nuisance Bear invites us to reconsider our assumptions about wildlife as spectacle. \nDocumentary • USA • 2026 • 90 Minutes\nDirectors: Gabriela Osio Vanden & Jack Weisman\nProducers: Michael Code\, Will N. SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival Closing Night Feature: SPEAK.
DESCRIPTION:The Lake County Film Festival returns for its milestone 15th edition\, bringing an exciting and diverse slate of films to local audiences from September 4–7 and September 12–15\, 2025. The festival will screen more than 134 films\, including 17 feature-length films and over 120 short films from around the world. \nGorton Center is proud to be hosting the closing night feature film\, “Speak.”!\nABOUT THE FILM \nLOGLINE \nFive top-ranked high school oratory students spend a year crafting spellbinding spoken word performances with the dream of winning one of the world’s largest and most intense public speaking competitions. \nLONG SYNOPSIS \nSPEAK follows five of the nation’s top teenage speech competitors\, capturing the euphoria of victory and the devastation of defeat as they craft and perform original oratories over the course of a 9-month season. Their dream is simple: To win the Super Bowl of public speaking\, the NSDA Nationals. \nWe witness them\, their coaches and their parents as they fight to keep school speech programs alive amid budget cuts\, book bans and censorship efforts that reach a fevered pitch during the 2024 election year. \nThe film begins at the 2023 National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) Championships\, introducing our eclectic orators: Noor\, Noah\, Sam\, Mfaz and Esther\, the two-time reigning national champion in Oratory. We follow them to the 2024 Nationals\, where Esther hopes to beat the record set by SPEAK’s Executive Producer\, Josh Gad\, in 1999. \nSPEAK captures the passion\, joy—and courage—of unforgettable teens using their voices to change hearts and minds. This film is the perfect antidote for these fraught times—intense\, funny\, and most of all\, hopeful. \nDirectorsJennifer Tiexiera\, Guy Mossman\nStars: Esther\, Mfaz\, Noah

Along the way\, the two record stories of the people who work in the parks and those who come to enjoy them\, as part of the rich tapestry of the park system’s history emerges.\n \nThey hear profound stories of people from all ages\, walks of life\, and cultures that come to the parks seeking tranquility\, healing\, motivation\, and connection to the natural world. Between the spectacular shots of the parks and compelling interviews are colorful bits of old maps\, posters\, and travelogues. This stunning road trip is a tribute to the national parks and their history\, and is also a recognition of the people that appreciate them and work to maintain their beauty.\n \nThis is a wonderful film\, that we can’t picture anyone not enjoying. It is a complete crowd-pleaser with great\, personal stories and amazing cinematography. If you haven’t seen this one yet\, don’t miss these last opportunities to see it on a big screen.\n \nThe program will also include a short film “Facing the Falls” preceding the screening .”Facing the Falls” tells the story of international disability rights advocate and entrepreneur\, Cara Elizabeth Yar Khan. Deep in the throes of an aggressive\, fatal muscle-wasting disease and no longer able to walk unassisted\, Cara ventures out on a daring\, 12-day expedition through the Grand Canyon\n \nThe 14th Lake County Film Festival will be held from October 31-November 3 & November 8-11. Screenings will also be held at The College Of Lake County in Grayslake\, IL\,

SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival - Join or Die
DESCRIPTION:Come see a special screening as part of the Lake County Film Festival at the John & Nancy Hughes Theater at Gorton Center! \nJoin or Die is a film about why you should join a club — and why the fate of America depends on it. In this feature documentary\, follow the half-century story of America’s civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam\, whose groundbreaking “Bowling Alone” research into America’s decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy’s present crisis. Flanked by influential fans and scholars — from Hillary Clinton\, Pete Buttigieg\, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to Eddie Glaude Jr.\, Raj Chetty\, and Priya Parker — as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country\, join Bob as he explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And\, most importantly… What can we do about it? \n

SUMMARY:Lake County Film Festival - Ellis
DESCRIPTION:Come see a special screening as part of the Lake County Film Festival at the John & Nancy Hughes Theater at Gorton Center! \nELLIS is the first feature-length documentary about Ellis Marsalis Jr. and the Marsalis Music Family\, often called the First Family of Jazz. \nThe film chronicles the life of this exceptional New Orleans composer\, performer\, and educator\, the profound influence that the city had on him — and that he had on the jazz that came out of New Orleans. It is also a story of how one man transcended racial injustices he faced from his birth during segregation to his death from COVID 19. \nMade with the full cooperation of Ellis\, his family and everyone around him\, ELLIS is told from an insider perspective with never-before-seen footage. For three years until his passing in April 2020\, I worked closely with Ellis Marsalis on this film about his life. He tells it in his own words and he guides us through the events of his life in his own way: With his music. We filmed Ellis’ last concerts at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York and Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro in New Orleans\, and a solo concert at the Marsalis Center for Music performed exclusively for the film. \nThese concerts are interlaced with verité scenes that place Ellis in his city and with interviews with his sons Wynton\, Branford\, Delfeayo\, Ellis III.\, and Jason\, and colleagues\, and disciples. Archival footage and photos take us back to New Orleans of the early twentieth century\, to California of the fifties where Ellis served in the Marines and played with modernist giant Ornette Coleman\, to New York of the seventies where he toured\, and to his classrooms throughout the years. \nThe result is more than a biography of one of jazz’s heroes. The film interweaves Ellis’ accomplishments with key threads of American cultural history\, placing him in historical context as someone who was both deeply affected the by world around him\, and who\, by responding to it helped to shape that world.
